As the owners of your local McDonald’s restaurants, we are honored to be selected for the fourth year in a row as the Grand Benefactor of the 2013 Begonia Festival. Ronald McDonald loved sharing his time with the Begonia Festival goers, during his Nautical Parade experience for the last three years and looks forward to another year leading the parade. As we built relationships with our honored customers in Capitola for over 35 years, we have participated with neighborhood organizations and schools helping to improve our community. Whether it is through our work with the Chamber of Commerce, supporting Surfing Santa, the Easter Egg Hunt and the Halloween Parade, or the Volunteer

Center of Santa Cruz County’s Human Race, and especially the families served by the Ronald McDonald House of Stanford, we value and share our community’s commitment to friendship, family and giving back to others. Please enjoy what the festival has to offer. We are grateful for your friendship and patronage. Steve and Jan Peat - McDonald’s of Capitola

BEN DAVIS JR.

Ben studied architectural and mechani-cal drawing in high school where he also took one art class. He began oil painting years later in 2006 while a caregiver for his mother during the last years of her life. He completed eight paintings during that period, then took one year off. Those first paintings were in several shows, all at a coffee house in the Haight, San Francisco. To date he has completed 11 more paint-ings, seven of those since moving to Santa Cruz in 2009. He has also done one show here at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. The majority of his work is on display at Sones Cellars winery on the west side of Santa Cruz.

Where in the world can you find a floating parade of barges covered in begonia blossoms, a seawall covered with chalk art, how about families making sand castles and enjoying a day at the beach? If you said Capitola, you’d be right. For over 60 years Capitola has welcomed visitors from far and near to their Begonia Festival over Labor Day weekend. It has something for every-body. The atmosphere is upbeat and posi-tive – like a small Disneyland. The warm weather, eclectic businesses and restau-rants, and activities make this event the perfect end-of-summer beach weekend. This is truly a labor of love for dozens of volunteers who supervise and judge events, pick thousands of begonias, sell merchandise, and provide family-friendly activities, concerts and a movie on the beach. “For over 12 years I have volun-teered at the Begonia Festival because of the community and the friendship that the Festival brings. Join us as we celebrate Capitola’s history and a unique festival,” states Laurie Hill, the president of the Board of Directors for the festival. “My favorite volunteering is the Sand Sculpture judging,” says Judy Mc-Neeley. “This event, like so many of the Festival events, brings out wonderful cre-ativity in people. How terrific to see fami-lies and groups working together to create something out of sand.” Although many volunteers have been helping put on the festival for years, there are many more volunteers, like Willard Schwartz, who are working their first festival. “We just moved to the area. I had heard of the festival, but didn’t know

a lot about it. I went to my first meeting and saw a lot of people working very hard to make the event happen, and met some wonderful people along the way.” Teresa Green started as a volun-teer in 2010 and is now treasurer on the Board. She talks about how the Begonia Festival is a tradition for many. “What really strikes me is the number of people who say they look forward to the Festival each year. Some talk about how their parents brought them, and now they’re bringing their children. That’s what keeps me coming back as a volun-teer.” A recurring theme for many volun-teers is the chance to make new friends. ”I started vol-unteering three years ago when asked if I would put on the Dance Review. I enjoy being part of making family memories,” re-marked Mary Beth Cahalen. “I like volunteering for the community and the new friends I make along the way.” Judie Block seconds the idea that it is a way to make new friends. “I moved to Capitola when I retired, and volun-teered to work at the merchandise booth at the festival last year. I proudly wore my blue “Staff” shirt. It’s a great group of people and being on the committee has

given me a great feeling of being part of my local community.” It truly does take a village – two actually. Capitola village and its welcom-ing atmosphere, and a community of vol-unteers who are dedicated to producing a truly unique family experience.

Just come to Capitola anytime and you won’t be a stranger to the magic! The magic prevails in any season or weather conditions.... the thick, blankety fog, the crisp sea air with a slight breeze on an early morning walk, the sounds of the surf on a warm summer evening….

Capture the Capitola Magic by participat-ing in the annual Sand Sculpture contest. Building sand castles is a magical experi-ence for children of all ages who delight in sifting the sand thru their hands and cre-ating a fortress of wizardry with the oozy grains of wet sand.

Sixty-one years ago in 1952, the Capitola Begonia Festival began on Labor Day weekend. These were the days of beauty contests, carousels, skee ball, and candy cotton. The first Sandbuilding Contest was started in 1969 by Craig French, Capitola’s Man of the Year in 2011. Craig is from a family of pear growers in Alviso. The Smith family had land in Capitola where they sought refuge from the Valley heat. Craig literally grew up with sand between his toes. He graduated from San Jose State

and moved to Capitola in 1969. He got a job as lifeguard at Capitola Beach. He loved being on the beach and he loved sand castles. He would build a sand castle at the base of his lifeguard station and showed the local children how to build...and then he instigated the first contest, which has since become a huge and fun event. Craig worked 18 years in Capitola and was the first Public Works Director and also was the City Manager.

Craig’s words of advice to sand builders, “Get there early and pick your spot.”

There are special tips for building a perfect sand sculpture. Sand can take on many different textures and qualities depending on the amount of moisture. Experienced builders agree that sandcastle building success comes largely from building moist sand. It’s important to add sand to water, which will give you maximum control of your sandcastle building mixture.

Start your sand sculpture by making a mound of wet sand. Get together a big pile of sand that’s a bit larger than you want your finished sandcastle to be. Pack and

pat the pile of sand until it is firm, solid and the general size and shape of your desired finished product. Add more sand as you go. The goal is to achieve a pile of sand that will be easy to carve into a de-tailed sculpture. You can detail your sculpture with pastry knives for maximum detail and control while building your castle. You can use anything from a paint scraper to a fork to a paintbrush to create a great effect on your sculpture. Shells, feathers, rocks, and seaweed are only a few of the many natural materials you can use for the fin-ishing touches.Creating the shapes and decorative details will give your sandcastle your unique feel and look. Start from the top of your sand pile and work down. Imagine you are a sculptor and let your creation emerge from the sand. The most important rule of thumb is to have fun, get your hands dirty and enjoy!

Contest signups begin at 8 a.m. at the beach, and the judging is at noon. Beware of high tides!

Begonia Festival BeginningsHistory of the Brown Ranch

Brown Bulb Ranch began in 1911 when James Brown purchased five acres of barren land outside the small coastal California town of Capitola. Because the ground had been sapped of its nutrients by 50 years of wheat production, James decided to purchase a herd of registered Guernsey cattle from a local judge. He built a dairy and kept the cattle in corrals, feeding them only weed-free feeds, the bi-product of which was an abundance of weed-free fertilizer. Always innovative, James even packaged and sold this composted manure under the name of West Coast Horticulturists’ “Moo Cow Fertilizer.”

The Guernsey dairy flourished, and Moo Cow ice cream, candy and milk were distributed in their own regional retail stores. Through contracts with the Southern Pacific Railroad, Dollar Line Cruise Ships, Panama Pacific, Matson Australian Lines and others, the reputation of Moo Cow milk and ice cream grew to even reach distribution in the Republic of Panama. At the peak of the dairy’s popularity in 1931, more than 9,000 visitors came to the company’s annual October Open House in Capitola. Always aware of advertising opportunities, the first Miss California was also photographed at the Brown Ranch alongside the dairy’s prize milk cow.

By 1916, James was growing more than 40 acres of freesias, gladiolas, montbretias,

tulips and tuberose on newly acquired ground in the Capitola area. Continuing the expansion, in 1924 James built 24,000 sq. ft. of glass house and seven acres of lath house for the propagation of tuberous begonias and gloxinias. Obtaining Begonia bulbs from Germany, who bragged of ‘the best flowers’, and Begonia tubers from Belgium, who claimed ‘the strongest tubers’, the Browns cross-bred the two varieties, and developed the Pacific Begonia. From the 1930’s to the 1970’s, approx 90% of the world’s Begonias came from the Brown Bulb Ranch in Capitola.

In 1932 James Brown died at the age of 49 and Alan and Worth Brown, James’ sons, took over operations.

By the 1950s the dairy had been completely closed and the third generation, Barclay, Todd, and Joel Brown, joined the family business. The firm was now the recognized world leader in the production of tuberous begonia bulbs.

In 1951, Peggy Matthews, a local swim teacher noticed that all the begonias at Brown Bulb Ranch were going to waste. She was not aware that the growers had no interest whatsoever in the flowers; they were propagating bulbs. The

death of the flowers signified that it was time to dig up the bulbs and send them to market. That year the Capitola Water Follies featured paddleboards decorated with Begonias, and that is how the Begonia Festival got its start. Even though the Begonia Festival was truly started in 1952, in 1954 the Capitola Businessmen’s Association inaugurated the First Annual Capitola Begonia Festival and proclaimed Capitola to be the “Begonia Capital of The World.” A festival in late summer—when the begonia are in spectacular bloom—was a natural way to extend the late-summer coastal tourist season.

Today, Brown Bulb Ranch is Golden State Bulb Growers. The Brown families still run the business and continue to donate the begonia blooms from its fields in Monterey County each year to the Capitola Begonia Festival.

Much in the way you can count on Bar-beques, apple pie, and sunshine as part of the Labor Day Weekend tradition in Capi-tola, you can add the Capitola Begonia Festival and Nautical Parade to the list of traditions. Since the 1950’s, this parade has been a family favorite and tradition, with many coming from near and far to fill the streets and beaches of Capitola. They line not only the creek path, but also the Stock-ton Ave Bridge, and the train trestle, to get a glimpse of this colorful and magical float-ing flower parade.

This unique parade was brought to Capi-tola by a revolutionary, history making, and groundbreaking woman, Peggy Matthew Slater. Peggy lived during a time period when women were not expected to participate, and were discouraged, from being political. She followed her dream to “create a better beach”, and became Capi-tola’s first city councilwoman. While she only served for a year before moving on to teach synchronized swimming at the Uni-versity of New Mexico, and to become the first woman of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), she would eventually return to Capitola to break more ground and con-tinue to fulfill her dream. With her love of swimming, entertaining, and Capitola, she not only created a better beach, but a tradition that would last for generations to come. When she launched the first Capitola Water Follies in 1950, it featured swim races for boys and girls, and water ballet. In 1951, she added begonia adorned paddleboards. The first begonia floats were featured in

1952. One can only imagine how proud Peggy would be if she could see what has become of her Capitola Water Follies. She not only helped to create a better beach, but long lasting family traditions and enduring friendships.

The “Friends of the Windmill House” is a large group of friends who’ve gathered on the river path for 10 years to build floats. They do it “as a great excuse for a party... and as a way to slow down this crazy world and unplug...” according to James and Vicki Wallace. In last year’s Windmill House float, Nathan Cross and city council member Dennis Norton helped Elvis fly from the trestle to a floating ‘59 pink Ca-dillac constructed of begonias, At the helm was beauty queen clad Noelle Castellanos, the owner of the Windmill House, who helped this group of friends capture the elusive trophy and a 2nd place title.

Lin Banks, former Capitola Begonia Festi-val President, emceed the parade for 10 of her 13 years on the committee. When asked what kept her coming back she speaks of her love for interacting with the people on the path and the lifelong friendships that resulted. She has many fond memories of floats, especially what she calls the “whoop-sie daisies”, like the projection screen that became a sail or the crow’s nest that almost didn’t fit under the bridge! While all great memories, it’s the memories that she made with her own family and the lasting friend-ships that are treasured most.

Just two of many stories which sum up and capture the essence of not only Peggy Matthew Slater and the parade, but also the festival and Capitola as well. At the end of the day it’s about family, good friends, a beautiful beach, and good times. If you’d like to learn more about getting in-volved visit our website @ www.begoniafestival.com

The Central Coast Offers Many Opportunities for Adventure!

To help you appreciate the beauty and the variety of experiences available on the Central Coast, here is a list of possible adventures that are unique to this region. Imagine yourself floating on the water while whale watching, or diving and coming face to face with a seal or otter, or zipping high above between enormous redwood trees, or floating from a parachute toward a beach, or stopping along a mountain trail to admire the wonders of creation, it’s all here for you. Here are just some of the possibilities:

Monterey Bay Youth Outdoor Day

is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating youth about the countless outdoor activities available in our area. Our goal is simple, let’s get our youth back outside and active! In hopes of achieving our goal we hold an annual event at the Santa Cruz Fairgrounds

where various companies and organizations can showcase their specialties. The event is totally free. Bring your children to the Santa Cruz Fairgrounds on June 22, 2013 so they can enjoy the dozens of activities we have to offer! www.mbyod.org

Zip Line Redwood Canopy Tours

Redwood Canopy Tours at Mount Hermon offers visitors an exciting eco-adventure into redwood canopy of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Enjoy the coastal redwood forest from the unique perspective only a zip-line canopy tour can offer. The two hour

guided tour includes six zip-lines and two sky bridges at heights of up to 150 feet. The Redwood Canopy Tours are the only facility of its kind in the region. www.mounthermon.org/redwood-canopy-tours

Kayaking

Kayaking tours of Elkhorn Slough will take you into one of 17 estuarine reserves in the United States. Elkhorn Slough is home to saltwater, fresh-water and marshland wildlife where you will see seals, otters, loons, egrets, pelicans and even small sharks. Along

Monterey Bay there are open coast paddling tours, overnight sea kayaking trips and the thrill of surf kayaking. www.elkhorn-slough.org/kayaking/index.htm

Hang Gliding

Northern California is world famous for its spectacular coastline, and there is no better way to appreciate this breathtaking beauty than by hang glid-ing high above it. There is a launching site high on the dunes over Marina Beach. The beach is the premier hang

gliding spot in Central California because of its steady winds, great launching area, and the wonderful views from above.Marina: www.coastalcondors.org

Surfing

Learn to surf where it all started when three young Hawaiian princes brought their love for surfing to Mon-terey Bay and Santa Cruz in 1885. Santa Cruz is one the best places to learn to surf with its consistent waves and its wide variety of surf breaks.

Water temperatures range from the low 50s to low 60s, depend-ing on the season. Wetsuits for most people are required. Learn-ing how to surf will teach you balance, and patience before that rush when you feel the power of the ocean beneath your board as you ride the waves. www.capitolabeachcompany.com

Capitola’s rich history extends beyond the town, the esplanade, its pristine beach and out onto the blue Pacific, where surfers have for generations enjoyed the one of finest surf breaks in California. While the neighboring town of Santa Cruz sports worldwide recognition as the home of mainland surfing, and to where a count-less number of the world’s finest board riders have hailed from, many of the greats first “cut their teeth” learning to surf on the mellow wave of Capitola.“The wave has not changed since I first began surfing there in 1960,” said David Adams. “I remember as an eighth grader when my family moved to Soquel, I would take my “Doolittle” surfboard, and paddle down the Soquel Creek, all the way to the ocean to surf.”The Van Slatter family name ran deep in the early days of Capitola surf history, with Van Slatter being the mentor for many a young surfer, including David Adams. “He taught the kids about the rules of surfing, its history and deep roots.” Adams said.Van Slatter’s mother Peggy Slatter who ran a surf school at the Pleasure Point Plunge, began the Begonia Festival, or “Water Parade” as it was first called back since its inception in the mid 1950’s, and whose father Herman Slatter was the first lifeguard at Capitola beach.Adams described Herman Slatter, as a

huge bar-rel-chested man, who wore only shorts and a pith helmet, and whose deep bari-tone voice would carry across the beach and ocean, pinpointing any unruly kid, who was even thinking of getting out of hand.“We were all scared of him, but we later found out that he was Johnny Weiss-muller’s stunt double in the Tarzan movies, so we figured out he couldn’t be that frightening if he was Tarzan,” Adams said with a wry smile. In 1964, when upon the completion of the Santa Cruz Yacht harbor, disaster struck Capitola when the sand began to disap-pear from the beach. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers who constructed the yacht harbor four miles away, did not realize the adverse effect the harbor walls would effect the sand flow of the coastline. For two years, sand was transported in to replenish Capitola Beach, a town that relied heavily on the tourist industry during the warmer months. Needing a more perma-nent solution to capture the disappearing sand, a rock jetty was built at the South end of the beach, which provided an im-

mediate solution for the problem.“We thought loss of sand would ruin our wave, but it never did,” said Adams, “The surf at all three breaks of Capitola, the main peak, Toes Over, and Bombora, all happen because of a rock shelf on the ocean floor, which insures they will all be there for future generations to enjoy. If you head out to the line-up to surf Capitola today, you will be greeted with a friendly “Hello,” and where, more often than not, you will sit shoulder to shoulder with someone who has surfed there for decades and who will gladly share with you tales of surfing their most memorable wave.No matter what your skill is as a surfer, whether amateur or professional, young or old, the surf break and friendly vibe at Capitola is place where you should re-spectfully pay a visit from time to time.Like an old friend, she will greet you, and you will always leave in better spirits than where you first arrived... that is the Aloha of Capitola.

A celebration of artistic expression and local winemaking describes the 31st annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival to be held September 14th and 15th in beautiful Capitola Village By-the-Sea. The quaintness of the Village and the sound of the surf is the backdrop for this won-derful celebration. The Festival was created in 1982 by the late Carrie Jacobson May, Barbara Reding and Eric Johnson to

showcase local artistic talent. Fifty artists participated on the Espla-nade that first year in the “Capitola Village Art Festival”. The Capitola Chamber of Commerce became in-volved the following year in 1983. The late Jay Collins created the first poster, wine tasting was added and the name was changed to the “Capi-tola Art & Wine Festival.” Artistic talent ranges from exquisite jewelry to metal sculpture for the home, intricate blown glass, hand-crafted leather goods and wood-work, water color and oil paintings, photography, and everything in-be-tween; even a local face-painter for the children (or the child within). And for the budding young artists, there is a children’s art area with ongoing projects to entertain the younger set. Today the Festival is hosted by the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of

Commerce and includes over 160 local and nationally acclaimed fine artists, wine tasting from 22 Santa Cruz Mountains wineries, local gourmet restaurants & caterers and fabulous entertainment all weekend including the samba-reggae-funk-surf-and-skate, capoeira-kicking, scene-busting phenomenon known as SambaDá, and red hot rockin’ soul from The Fundamentals, plus local dance and performing arts groups, and street performers.Local artist Kim Hogan created the beautiful artwork for the 2013 Fes-tival Poster. The Capitola Art & Wine Festival is the biggest fundraising event of the year, not only for the Capitola-So-quel Chamber of Commerce (a non-profit organization), but also for the many local school groups and non-profit community groups that assist with the Festival. The Festival has

Kim Hogan has lived in Capitola for nearly 10 years. She has two grown children,

Amanda and Hunter, and shares her life with her best friend and partner, Michael Termini. They enjoy cooking, politics, neighbors, a wealth of friends, and cross country motorcycle rides every summer; Kim rides her own Harley. Kim says, “Riding cross country has taken on a completely new meaning since I began painting. I will often focus on a scene during the ride and,

while enjoying the beauty and majesty of scenes like the Grand Canyon, Lake Louise in Canada, the battlefields of Gettysburg, or just a tree, I’ll deconstruct the scene in my mind so I can paint it. Could a person be more blessed?

My love of painting began five years ago when I enrolled in a night class through Capitola adult education. I had no idea how it would change my life. Blessed with an amazing teacher, I began painting in water color, moving onto oil the following year. I have been experimenting with subjects since the beginning and haven’t settled in my sweet spot yet. I love painting portraits, children especially, however intricate flowers and large landscapes are also a joy. I went through a period of painting scenes from photos of Capitola in the 1920’s. Currently I am experimenting with nature – clouds, water, and Rocky Mountains in particular. It doesn’t matter what I paint, I simply love the pure joy and peace of it. To this

day, I stand back gazing at something I have painted, filled with emotion that I created it. I have developed a completely new appreciation of art in general and my perspective of people and nature has taken on a whole new meaning since I began painting. I will be forever grateful for the nudge in life that led me to take a night class.”

SambaDá – Samba-Reggae-Funk

While Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring their profound knowledge and respect for the roots of afro-brazilian song and dance, the entire band has developed a type of samba-reggae-funk with a universal appeal. SambaDá musically unites the Americas, drawing from percussion based styles of South and Central America, and blends it with that good old funk and reggae back beat so familiar to crowds of North America. For over ten years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of Brazilian culture. The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities. What unites this band from such diverse backgrounds is a magic that can be felt by both the band and the audience. SambaDá brings joy to each performance, and keeps their fans asking for more!

Tucked between the Santa Cruz Harbor and the San Lorenzo River is Seabright. At the east end of Seabright Beach the lighthouse guards the Harbor Entrance and at the west end is the cliff overlooking the mouth of the San Lorenzo River and the Beach Boardwalk.

The broad beach at Seabright beckons to sunbathers and beach volleyball players alike.

Just across East Cliff Drive from the beach is the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History with its huge gray concrete whale just begging to children to be ridden on the high seas.

Along the west side of the Harbor is Aldo’s Harbor Restaurant while on the east side is Johnny’s Harborside. On Seabright Avenue itself is the Engfer Pizza Works and the Seabright Brewery
