It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Pulse 2020 – Aga Khan University’s First Annual Cardiovascular Conference. At AKU, we are dedicated to excellence in research, education and the dissemination of knowledge. This meeting which brings together preeminent national and international leaders in cardiovascular science and clinical practice is at the forefront of that mission. The theme for this inaugural gathering was chosen to be Cardiometabolic Health, highlighting the critical relevance of this global epidemic for a low-middle income country like Pakistan. With over a third of Pakistan’s annual deaths attribut-ed to cardiovascular disease, it is imperative to develop innovative strategies to face this growing challenge.

Aga Khan University, its teaching hospital and its clinical faculty are leaders in tertiary care, successfully treating a wide range of complex cardiovascular issues. This conference is an exciting platform to engage with experienced clinicians and learn about the latest advances in cardiac imaging, electro-physiology, interventional and structural heart disease.

We are excited to be hosting you at Aga Khan University in Karachi and looking forward to a weekend of innovative learning opportunities and interaction with key thought leaders!

Message from Chair Organizing Committee,Dr Osman Faheem

Page 3: pu se - AKU

According to the global burden of disease study estimates, cardiovascular disease is now the number 1 cause of death in Pakistan - this holds true for both men and women. In a resource limited country such as ours, a multi-pronged strate-gy targeting both prevention and management of cardiovascu-lar diseases and its risk factors is needed. The three pillars of an effective response to this epidemic across prevention and management include: 1) Education of the public and health professionals, 2) Contextual research on how the disease is different and what therapies and strategies work (and don’t work) in our population, and 3) Strengthening and co-ordina-tion of our health systems. Pulse, AKU’s first annual cardiovascular conference, has been initiated as a local but scalable educational measure to tackle the Pakistani cardiovascular epidemic. We hope to partner with cardiologists, general physicians and all stakeholders affected by cardiovascular disease. This year’s theme is cardio-meta-bolic health. This theme was chosen to highlight and create awareness around the highly prevalent, co-existent and interdependent risks of both metabolic syndromes and cardio-vascular disease and how clinicians might think about treating and mitigating future cardiovascular risk in their patients with metabolic syndromes and or diabetes. We hope that you will find the discussions in the conference stimulating and thought-provoking. We hope that, besides providing education on bread-and-butter cardiology, this conference will also serve as a networking platform for stakeholders to synergize efforts towards tackling cardiovascular diseases in our region.
