Testimonials: “It was an amazing opportunity for me to meet new people and have fun. My favourite thing was performing. It was an amazing feeling. Seeing everyone smile and cheer us on, clapping along or moving to our song (“Conga”) was just overwhelming. We had many dress rehearsals and we even got to have a huge disco before our last evening show! This also followed on by the orchestra and lines of dancers and singers. I would definitely recommend Southern Stars because it is a memory that sticks with you forever. It’s an opportunity that not many people can get, and the joy and excitement is awesome and makes everyone so happy. I am already so happy and excited for next year.” “My favourite thing about Southern Stars was the dance party before our last show and also performing on the huge arena stage. We did many rehearsals preparing for the big nights on the stage in front of more than a thousand people in our gold costumes. I would recommend being a part of Southern Stars next year because it is a great experience meeting kids from lots of other schools from all over NSW and also get lots of exercise.” “My favourite thing about Southern Stars was being able to work as a team to perform. I would highly recommend joining because it is a great way to just enjoy school and be a part of something.” “My favourite thing about being a part of Southern Stars was making new friends and performing in front of a big crowd. It’s a great experience and really fun.” “My favourite thing about Southern Stars was performing our great dances and making new friends. I would definitely recommend Southern Stars because it is very fun, and you have so many new experiences.”

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As mentioned in my last newsletter item, students at Kanahooka participated in the Centre of Education Statistics and Evaluation “Tell Them From Me” Survey and this important data is already being used to consider how we best meet the needs of our students. From Week 9 parents and carers will have the opportunity to complete the online “Tell Them From Me” surveys also. These surveys provide our school with invaluable information about experiences and opinions that help shape future programs and initiatives that improve student learning and wellbeing in our school. All responses are confidential and the survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process. The survey link will be available on the Kanahooka Facebook page and our school website from Monday 16 September until Friday 25 October. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this important event. J Burns

WELLBEING

Our Wellbeing Team has been busy this term. There have recently been Year Meetings for all year groups and we had visits from: Legal Aid discussing students’ legal rights with Year 10 & 11 for issues such as buying cars and

their actions online. Headspace met with Year 8 and 9 to talk about how students can access mental health services

when they are need of support. Year 7 participated in a session on Conflict Resolution and students discussed different ways to

resolve disputes including what works and what usually doesn’t work.

The Aware Program has visited from the Department of Health to support students who have responsibility for caring for people in their home. For example, a student who has a younger brother with Autism who she collects from school and looks after alone almost daily. Warilla Women’s Health Centre continues to deliver group sessions to Year 9 to help build their understanding of how to stay safe in a changing world including online, at parties, with friends and in relationships. The Strong Program is working with almost 40 students to build connection to school and confidence in themselves. As we do every day, the Kullillah team continues to support students who have difficulties at school. This could be minor difficulties with friendship groups or really large issues with learning. Students and families can always come in and ask for help or phone and discuss anything with our dedicated and professional staff.

WELLBEING

Koori Girls Group

Female Indigenous students have been working in teams to draft a plan for an excursion by the beach.

Budgeting and developing a balanced menu and to prepare and serve at a BBQ hut was the focus of the lessons.

All students did a fantastic job of communicating their menu ideas to the group and proposing different activities to do to strengthen relationships with one another.

All Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander girls are welcome to get involved. Students can see Ms Scheers in HSIE, our Deputy Principal, Ms Burns, or Louise and Ben in Kullillah if you would like to join.

The Future Pathways Program has begun for nominated students in Years 10 and 11. The focus of the program is creating a roadmap to post-school success. Future Pathways provides participants with the skills required to navigate the impending choices for high school completion, and equip them with a tailored roadmap for the journey beyond. Students will participate in workshops, sports activities and coaching programs to identify individual strengths, develop an individual transition plan, build a practical work-readiness portfolio and enhance their own personal identity, wellbeing and relationships. Coaching workshops will be held in partnership with Hayes Park Public School over the coming weeks.
