DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The end of the term has arrived. It just seems like yesterday when we were welcoming students back from the last holidays. It has been an extremely busy and productive term and I have personally observed students demonstrating outstanding engagement in both the classroom and when they have participated in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Our students deserve high praise for work throughout the term. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students and their families a safe and enjoyable break over the next 2 weeks and that all students come back revitalised for Term 3.

I would ask parents and carers to take the time to sit down with their children and talk about their school report, which all students receive on the last day of term. In particular I would like you to talk with them about the changes which the teacher has suggested students make to enable improvement to occur. Adopting this advice may allow the student to develop both a deeper understanding and more effective skills with which they are able to apply this knowledge. I would also strongly encourage all parents/carers to attend the Parent Teacher Evening next term to discuss your child's progress with their teachers. As always I would like to take this opportunity to thank students and parents/carers for supporting our School Uniform Policy. Term 3 is the coldest term of the year. Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform to wear to keep them warm on cold Winter days. If their uniform is not able to be worn please supply them with a note to give to their Roll Call teacher. School uniform is no longer available at the school canteen. Uniforms can be purchased through the front office between the hours of 8.00am to 2.00pm. This week I visited some Year 10 Elective Classes. I have documented their engagement and in some cases the work produced by them in the photos below. In all classes the teachers spoke in glowing terms about the effort which all students were making in these classes.

A message from the Principal ...

RYPEN Camp - 2019 On 5 April I was sent to attend a 3 day camp called RYPEN, which was sponsored by the Dapto Rotary Club. I took on a challenge to step out of my comfort zone and be surrounded by a group of people I didn’t know. I was the only student from Kanahooka High School to attend the camp for 2019. When I arrived at Teen Ranch, I was given a gift bag, which included a drink bottle and a RYPEN shirt. Later that day all of the students and staff got an opportunity to greet and meet everyone. We all sat in a hall and we were called out individually to get our name badges. We then played games for a better opportunity to know more about each other. The next day we did activities like challenge courses, rock climbing and rope walking. I never thought that I could meet a group of people and only spend 3 days with them and feel like I’ve known them forever. On the last day, in the groups we were assigned, we made paintings of what we thought the word “perspective” meant. We made paintings about hope and purpose. That night we all went into the mountain for a campfire where we sang and danced; I even got to read some of my poems. This camp has changed the way I now look at life. Even if I don’t know someone, I now know I should always offer them a helping hand because they may have been through worse than myself. The RYPEN camp was an experience that I know I’ll never forget, and I would love to thank Ms Constantine for picking me to attend this amazing camp. It was the best 3 days I could have ever imagined. Year 11 Food Technology As part of the Year 11 Food Technology Nutrition assessment, the students designed a 7-day meal plan

for their chosen group in the life stage cycle. The students prepared and cooked a dinner from this meal

plan. The meal had to be healthy, nutritious and include all the essential nutrients. It looked and smelled

delicious.

Year 12 Food Technology The student’s assessment task was on Food Product Development. The students had to develop a “Me Too” pie to sell to the target market - families. The students went through the design process from the conception of pie ideas to making pie prototypes and packaging, suitable for distribution to retail outlets. The students were creative in their pie ideas and prototypes such as cheese and mac pie, pizza pie, chicken enchilada pie, butter chicken pie, curry cottage pie, bacon and egg pie and Malta pie. The students had to evaluate the pies using the hedonic scales to look at areas of improvement in taste

and texture. The students made the pies a second time to improve on their

original pies. The pies were delicious. Keep up the good work!

Students worked overtime to get everything ready for the Enviro Art Pod Bush Art experience launch at the Creative Container in Dapto Square on Tuesday, and their hard work paid off! Christie Hayes from i98 and Neighbours was our special guest presenter, and student, Macie, battled the nerves of speaking to a crowd to share with everyone how much she enjoyed working on the project throughout the term. A huge thanks to the community artist, Richard Lee, and Carly Pascoe from Wollongong City Council for guiding the students through this experience. The biggest thanks, however, goes to the students who have worked on this every Friday this term. The work will be on display at Viva la Gong later in the year.

SOUTHERN STARS COMES ALIVE IN 2018 – Tickets on sale! Last week Southern Stars 2019 COME ALIVE was officially launched at the BlueScope Visitors Centre in Wollongong, where Executive Producer, Paul Roger, announced the theme, and that tickets were officially on sale to the public.

There were some fantastic performances from our featured artists offering a sneak peek of some of the great items from this year’s show. Our 4 Tenors in particular really made an impact, bringing the audience to tears – it was incredible!

The show once again will have something for everyone. The theme and show segments are all based around how students come alive when they perform.

It’s the biggest show in the history of Southern Stars with over 3,000 students from over 100 schools in the Illawarra and around NSW. The students will take part in a world-class two hour arena style variety show that will feature Pop, Country, Rock and Opera.

COME ALIVE includes two circus troupes, audience favourites - the NSW Public School Millennial Marching Band, a 600 strong choir, rock band, our Aboriginal dance ensemble, massive student orchestra, the Black Swans with an original item based on stories of the Illawarra, 2000 dancers, amazingly talented featured artists, the signing choir and disability students fully integrated with our drama students and vocalists, and much more.

As in past years, community support of Southern Stars is vital to ensure its success, and the easiest way of showing your support is by attending one of the four blockbuster shows.

It doesn’t matter if you know anyone performing in the show or not – Southern Stars is a high energy spectacle which provides great entertainment for people of all ages. The talent, energy and enthusiasm of our students, is something not to be missed. Anyone who has attended a show says so!

Over 12,000 people are expected to attend the four performances at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Friday August 23 (10am and 7.30pm) and Saturday August 24 (2pm and 7.30pm) - make sure you are one of them!

Please note that tickets should be purchased only through the official ticket booking site of Ticketmaster. http://ticketmaster.com.au

It’s a work of Art!

Over the holiday break, don't forget to check out the beautiful works created by students of Kanahooka High School that are surrounding the Wollongong Youth Centre, on the corner of Burelli and Keira Street, Wollongong.

Wollongong Central have also exhibited some of our students work inside the centre.
