NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week - Bangarra Dance Theatre Excursion

In Week 9, some of our students went to watch Bangarra Dance Theatre perform at the Sydney Opera

House.

The show was called ‘Dark Emu’ and was based on the book by Bruce Pascoe. It explored the vital life

force of flora and fauna and connection to country in a series of dance stories, directed by

Stephen Page. It was a great way to build some excitement leading into NAIDOC Week and a great

opportunity to watch some amazing dancers.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC WEEK – Arts and Crafts

It was a pleasure to see so many students use recess and lunch times to get involved in one of our school-organised programs to celebrate NAIDOC Week – an Arts and Crafts making activity. Ms Scheers, Mrs Sandy, Ms Dedini and Ms Shiell guided students in the making of headbands, necklaces and bracelets using wool as the basic material. Mrs Sandy brought in mats and posters that showed the tradition behind the making process. Some students enjoyed making cards for the special females in their lives, following this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can!” They made 3D style cards from cardboard cut-outs and paints that paid special tribute to the females

that have assisted them to achieve and get to where they are in their lives.

Deputy Principals Report

Top Blokes Graduation Top Blokes Foundation is an organisation which helps boys deal with the issues they encounter growing up in todays society. The foundation was established in 2006 by Melissa Abu-Gazaleh who is an ex-student of Kanahooka High School. For two terms, the boys have participated in the Top Blokes Program. The presenters, Will and Keaton, reported that both the behaviour and engagement of the boys was outstanding. The CUA Dapto have provided financial support for the program to occur in our school and we greatly thank them for their support. The students in the program made the following observations and comments about the program: “This program has changed our knowledge of situations. It has made us more aware about consequences. The staff were really friendly. The Program has given us a great opportunity.” Sitting in the graduation listening to the banter between presenters and the students made me realise the importance of programs such as Top Blokes. It is invaluable that we educate the boys to assist them in maturing into young men. Hearing the boys talk today, I have no hesitation in saying that the boys who started the program, are now well on their way to becoming responsible young men.

Strong Girls Program

This term the Year 8 and Year 10 groups have continued. There have been many rich conversations around goal setting, assumptions, sexism, bullying and understanding and managing the “F” word… FEELINGS.

Both groups have also learnt to see the school environment through different eyes through a series of photographic Challenges (pictured below

There have also been some logic challenges and physical games that have caused much laughter.

The girls are looking forward to capturing their journey this year in one short film per group that they will write, shoot and edit next term.

Mathematics

HSC Mathematics Revision Day On Friday 29 June, ten Year 12 mathematicians attended the annual HSC Revision Day at UOW.

These students had previously selected different units of work from the Mathematics and Extension 1

courses that they wanted to revise. Experienced HSC teachers from across the Illawarra delivered these

workshops and each student found them valuable. They were able to sit on a workshop presented by

myself to 237 other students!

Support

S4 McDonalds Community Access Program

The students love to access the shops. We shop for the food for our cooking class and we shop for a few items for the staff members. Students are given a grocery list for items and they check prices, brands and comparisons. The students then pay for the items and check their change. The students walk to the shops from the school, taking in the care involved in crossing roads, walking through car parks and generally how to behave out in public.

E-Waste

We’ve heard back from the E-Waste recycler (Simms Metal Management) and the total weight of the

equipment recycled was: 665kg

The majority of that was directly from the school, but some staff and community members dropped some items off. These items now will be recycled correctly, re-used, re-purposed and not end up in landfill.

I’ve been contacted by someone at the Regional IT Office regarding pushing the option to get a recycling cage/bin at other local schools so it’s hopeful that this program will eventually become region wide. See-ing TV’s and electrical devices dumped on the street and in creek beds may begin to be a thing of the past.

3D Printing

I’m looking for a student to create a Kanahooka High School keyring on TinkerCAD.com so I’ll put it out there that if there is a student interested in 3D printing and wants to design a keyring I will print it for them personally on my own 3D printer so that they can present it to their favourite teacher or staff member with a keyring designed by themselves. In order to use TinkerCAD you just need to create a free account. If you have any questions please come and speak with me in the Library on

Monday, Wednesday or Fridays.

Cakes, Cakes and More Cakes Once again the Support faculty held it annual Cake Stall at Dapto Mall. The students did a splendid job of running the stall. The variety of cakes and slices was amazing and exceptionally well presented with details of the ingredients used noted on the various items. All in all a very enjoyable time was had by all. It certainly will be a hard task to better the event next year.

Dancing with KHS Kanahooka High Dance students visited Hayes Park Primary School to do a dance performance as well as run a quick dance workshop with some of the students.
