    Southern Stars Dance

Kanahooka High School's first Mass Dance Rehearsal for Southern Stars took place on Tuesday 18 July at the Illawarra Sports Stadium in Berkeley.

Our students have been chosen to feature in the second half of the show "Postcards" this year, in the segment named "History has its eyes on you". Their item takes the form of a Disco Medley alongside a number of other High Schools within our region.

As the day wore on they kept their spirits high, maintaining enthusiasm and a dedicated approach. All of the students involved represented our school in an exceptional manner, both on and off the rehearsal stage. We are eagerly awaiting Show Week!

  • Welcome back to Term 3. It seems like yesterday when we were welcoming you back to school for 2017. Often parents ask about how they can help with their child’s progress at school. Steps parents could take include: Keep informed by asking questions and reviewing the schoolwork that your child is completing in

class. A simple strategy is to look at class notebooks.

Read the Assessment information booklet issued to your child in Semester 1 so that you know when assessment tasks are due and when examinations are occurring. Assessment booklets for all years are available upon request from the front office if you do not have one.

Ask about assignment and examination results and acknowledge good performances. You can also contact your child’s teacher about what your child could do to improve their performance in future tasks.

Attend school functions, particularly those where your children are involved.

Read school reports with your children and attend parent teacher interviews.

Ensure students come to school well prepared for the day with all required equipment. A good idea is to ask them what subjects they have for the day the night before so that they can correctly pack their bag.

Contact the school with any concerns and for relevant information about your child’s progress. Your child’s Year Adviser will be able to discuss your child’s general progress and also speak to other teachers to find out information relating to specific subjects. The Year 9 Adviser is Mr Howley and the Year 10 Advisers are Mrs Sammut and Mr Walton.

Could I also ask you to check with your child if they require any notes to be signed for excursions and school events. Receiving completed notes early is important as we need to finalise numbers and make the arrangements required for your child to participate in these events and excursions. Being winter it is quite cold, particularly in the mornings. Could you make sure your child is wearing the correct uniform to school. If you require more items of warm clothing, KHS jumpers, jacket and long pants are available from the school canteen. A full list of available items and their price is on our school website and the back page of this newsletter. A full description of the KHS Uniform is also available on the website. The majority of our students do wear correct KHS uniform every day. We have received excellent feedback from the community on how impressive our students look. The photos below depict Stage 5 students in class wearing correct uniform.

Year 7 are completing their first novel study for the year - each class is studying a different novel, and it is their first opportunity to study a novel in a high school setting. 7K in particular are studying Wonder.

Year 8 English are currently studying the Patrick Ness novel A Monster Calls. This novel is a compelling story of a boy's journey dealing with his mother's terminal illness. The students have been investigating sensory imagery, creative writing and characterisation while reading the novel. Keep an eye out for the film later this year!

Year 9 English are looking at Environmental Issues and how they are shown through texts. In particular they are looking at the film Avatar and exploring how themes of colonisation and environmental destruction are shown through a variety of related texts.

Year 10 are studying the classic Shakespeare Macbeth. They are looking at key scenes in the play and examining how Shakespeare wrote about the political movements of the time through his plays. Macbeth is his shortest and bloodiest play. Ms Etheridge HEAD TEACHER ENGLISH

This year Southern Stars is sending musical and visual POSTCARDS to its audience.

Historically postcards have been a way to connect with the people you love and care about – they suggest a special place, a special time, or a special moment that is important or significant.

This year’s show is full of special moments and will once again push the boundaries and encompass a plethora of musical, dance, vocal, drama and performance styles.

There will be circus, disco, big bands, tap, rock, ballet, pop, drama, folk, orchestra, an Indigenous dance company, and musical theatre to name just a few.

It’s going to be big and it’s going to be loud, and as always, it will be inspiring.

Approximately 3,000 public school students from around southern NSW will take part in the two hour arena style show that will feature classics like Nutbush and In the Ghetto to contemporary numbers like Geronimo and Can’t Stop This Feeling.

As in past years, community support of Southern Stars is vital to ensure its success, and the easiest way of showing your support is by attending one of the four blockbuster shows.

It doesn’t matter if you know anyone performing in the show or not – Southern Stars is a high energy spectacle which provides great entertainment for people of all ages. The talent, energy and enthusiasm of our students is something not to be missed!

Over 12,000 people are expected to attend the four performances at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Friday August 25 (10am and 7pm) and Saturday August 26 (2pm and 7pm) - make sure you are one of them.
