A Wellington school is inshockafteroneofits learn-erswaskilledinastabbing

incident over the weekend.

Samkelo Mkulungu (10), a Grade3 learner at Pauw Gedenk PrimarySchool died when he was allegedlystabbed by another 10-year-old.

The incident took place during anargument near Samkelo’s house inNew Rest, Mbekweni, on Saturdayevening.

According to information re-

ceived, Samkelo was playing out-side with friends at around 20:00 onSaturday when a group of childrenapproached them.

An argument allegedly started be-tween the two groups and as it grewmore heated, a 14-year-old boy fromone group handed a knife to the 10-year-old suspect, a learner fromWellington Primary School, whothen allegedly stabbed Samkelo sev-eral times.

Samkelo’s father Lathi toldPaarlPost that the father of the suspecttried to help, driving Samkelo to thehospital, but the boy died on the

way.The 10-year-old sus-

pectwasarrestedandap-peared in a prosecutor’soffice last Monday.

Thecasehasbeenpost-poned pending furtherinvestigation.

The motive for themurderisnotyetknown.

The case will be thor-oughly investigated af-ter which the docket willbe handed over to the Di-rector of Public Prosecu-tions (DPP) for a decision on a possi-

ble prosecution.According to sources,

the suspect is back athome and attendingschool.

Lathi said he and hiswifeVusekaarestillbat-tling to come to termswith their son’s death.

“We are still veryhurt.”

Lathi said his son wasa quiet, peaceful childwho was fond of learn-ing. He said Samkelo

loved watching TV and reading.

Julius Williams, principal ofPauw Gedenk spoke on behalf ofhimself, the staff, governing bodyand learners of Pauw Gedenk, say-ing they regretted the tragic way inwhich Samkelo had died.

“We would like to convey ourdeepest sympathy to the family.May God bless you and may Samke-lo’s soul rest in peace.”

Arrangements for Samkelo’s fu-neral are still being made.

Samkelo leaves two sisters of sixand two years. He also had a twinbrother who passed away someyears ago.

Sassa ‘loan-shark’ moves premisesLISE BEYERS

The alleged Sassa loan-shark who was op-erating from premises in Klein Draken-stein Road, has now reportedly moved tonewpremisesintheJFCBuildinginBethelStreet, Paarl Central.

Since Monday morning, scores of peoplewere seen queuing outside these premises.There are no signboards on the premises

with the name of the business or what it does.There are no visible contact numbers either.Paarl Post reporters tried to quiz personnel

and clients about the nature of their transac-tions, but their questions went unansweredand they were chased from the premises.After further investigation, Paarl Post dis-

covered that the lease for the premises is inthe name of a woman called Arlene, whoclaims that her business is called Cash Pay-ment Services (CPS).When Arlene was phoned and asked about

her dealings in the Bethel Street building, shebecame extremely defensive and denied thatshe had any business interests in Paarl.She abruptly ended the conversation, say-

ing: “Don’t call me again”.CPS, who has confirmed Arlene is an em-

ployee, acts as a channel between social wel-faregrantbeneficiaries,Sassaandformalbusi-nesses.CPS enrols beneficiaries by issuing them

with UEPS/EMV smart-cards that digitallystore their biometric fingerprint templates,

which enables them to access their social wel-fare grants securely at any time or place.A spokesperson for CPS said Arlene works

at their cash depot inTriangular Street, Paarl.“Cash Paymaster Services does not operate

from any other premises in Paarl.”A local debt conciliator from Paarl said

many of his clients had fallen into these typesof traps run by other loan sharks.“Although there are stringent legal regula-

tions,whichwereput intoplaceby theNation-alCreditRegulator,manypeoplearesodesper-ate for cash that they will go to any lengths.“Loan-sharks will lend you R100 and then

you have to pay them back R200 the followingweek. Most people who fall victim to thesesharks have no idea about finances and theyend up in a permanent cycle of debt.“Suchunsecured loanpay-backsareat exor-

bitant interest rates of more than 30% over aperiod of six months. If the public needs to in-curdebt, they should speak toa licensed finan-cial service provider first.“Even better, they should rather talk to a

According to Glenn Gri-er,chiefexecutiveofficerofboth Box Buzz and Sher-wood Design, local busi-nesses affected by the BergRiver bursting its banks,have on various occasionsasked the DrakensteinMu-nicipality to remove alienvegetationfromtherivertoprevent the water frombacking up.Grier said the battle be-

tween the two parties, whohave also roped in theDepartment ofWater Affairs and Forestry, datesback as far as 2005.AlthoughinthepastGrierwasable

to prevent water from causing toomuch damage to his factories bystacking sandbags, the same couldnot be said this time.With 266mm of rain pouring down

in August, it came as no surprisewhen the river overflowed yet againon 28 August during a severe rain-storm causing havoc toGrier’s facto-ry, which manufactures personal-ised wooden boxes.Water up to a metre high flowed

through the factory.With nomeans to access to his fac-

tory that night,Grier anda colleaguetravelled by canoe the followingmorning toestablish theextentof thedamage.Large orders of products that were

supposedtogooutthefollowingweekwere destroyed and the factory wasleft with no electricity, no telephoneand no means of doing business forat least a week.AccordingtoGrier,severalsugges-

tions have been made to the munici-pality in the past to remove alienplants from the river in order to im-prove the flow of the river.Anupgrade of the stormwater sys-

tems has also been suggested to pre-vent flooding in low-lying areas.

Griersaidoneof thereasonsfortherecent floodis that theriver isexpect-edtocarrymorewaterthannormallyrequired, due to run off and the newcatchment dam.“But alien growth encroaching

well into the river course itself is notmaintained and a bottle neck in theriver below the Long Street bridge isnot helping matters,” said Grier.He says in the past themunicipali-

ty used to dredge the river.This however has apparently not

been done for a number of years,causing the river to silt up.He says the design of storm water

drainsneeds revised, as low-lyingar-easwere floodedbywaterbackingupin the storm water drains.“This could be alleviated by plac-

ing a non-return valve on thesedrains or placing them at an angle tothe river to create a venturi effect.”According to him runoff flow from

developed areas needs to be sloweddown–as soil and shrubsundernatu-ralconditionswouldnormallydo–bybuilding check dams or allowingreeds to grow on the banks of tribu-taries that would vastly help in theslowing down of the water.“The Berg River is a huge asset to

Paarl. Ithasbeenbadlyneglectedandour livelihood is based on its exist-ence.“Resources need to be spent to pre-

vent flooding in the winterand it being constantly pol-luted in the summer,” saidGrier.JohannMettler,municipal

manager, admitted that anumber of institutions andbusinessesalong thebanksofthe Berg River suffered dam-ages due to recent heavyrains and flooding.“It is a fact that anyproper-

ty adjacent to the Berg Riverisat riskof floodingunderex-treme circumstances,” Met-tler said.Although dredging of the

river in this areawas done inaccordance with a mining li-cense many years ago ,it is

not allowed at present, he said.According to Mettler storm water

drainage of low-lying areas is prob-lematic as they are the exact areaswhere storm water gathers.“The river in fact pushes back into

the system. Installing non-returnvalves in the system is nearly impos-sible andwould have no effect in anyhigh level flooding situation as themain flooding occurs by water flood-ing the surface area.“The storm water outlets are al-

ready installed at an angle to the riv-erwherepossible.Withthewater lev-el as experienced, the venturi effectis not applicable.”Mettler said the clearing of vegeta-

tion, which is an ongoing process,would not have had any effect as thewater level in the river was wayabove any possible obstruction.He said the responsibility to clear

alien vegetation is a sharedmandateof the owners of the river bank prop-erties, the Municipality (where theyare the owner of the river bank prop-erty) and the Department of WaterAffairs.“Removal of vegetation could

prove to be detrimental over time asthis could lead to destabilisation ofthe river bank.”Heassuredresidents thatall possi-

ble measures are taken to mitigateemergency situations.

Birders were delighted when theyspotted a Jackal Buzzard (Rooiborsja-kkalsvoël) with its feisty chick on thenest in the Drakenstein Bird Sanctuaryat the waterworks near Mbekweni onSaturday morning. graphical advantage in that theMain Road is relatively short andtherefore very conducive to tour-ist-orientated ventures as above.Additionally there are manyguesthouses and lodges in thestreets parallel to the short mainroad, therefore all within strollingdistance of top restaurants and

granted, but it is so long that theaverage senior tourist will find itvery hard to traverse this street,never mind on a hot day. It wouldalso take a long time to achievethis. ber, he cooked three four-coursemeals for approximately 110 guestseach at the Restaurant Les GrandesTables du Channel in Calais, a cen-tre for the arts set in what was oncean abattoir.

The menu for the three meals in-cluded an amuse bouche (marinat-ed, pan-fried crocodile masala withwild sage, served on Cape-stylebreyani) anda starter of bakedhakewithalemonpelargoniumcrustandtoasted almonds served with richcarrot custard and potato and hakebrandade.The main course consisted of

Sam Taylor, a qualified chef departie, recently won South Afri-ca’s first online cookingcompeti-tion, called Freshly Blogged.

Taylor out-cooked and out-blogged40 foodbloggers fromacrossSouth Africa and walked away withgreat prizes, including a trip for twoto Germany and a three-featurespread in the food magazine, FreshLiving.

This mother of two was invited totake part in the competition whichconsisted of a series of 11 weekly

food challenges.“I was excited by the challenge

and wanted to be part of this onlinecompetition. Each week we had fivedays to experiment with the giveningredients to create a recipe, de-velop a dish, photograph it andwrite about the inspiration behindthe dish. The judges then reviewedthe entries based on culinary skill,creativity and technique used tocreate each dish, in line with thecompetition rules.”

She said that producing a greatnew recipe each week and being upagainst some very creative bloggerswas definitely a challenge.

“Cooking against the top three inthe final in front of a live audiencewas both nerve-racking and exhila-rating. We had just thirty minutesto cook as many dishes as we likedfrom a mystery basket.

“I love a good steak sandwich andthe baguette was too fresh to resist,and with it I made a seared steakbruschetta with caramelisedonions, pea sprouts and a red winereduction. I needed something to setmy bruschetta apart and I think thesauce was just the thing.”

For desert she made a pear andchocolate spring roll, dusted withcinnamonsugar, servedwithacara-

mel sauce.She said after being

announced the winnershe felt “enormouslyproud” of herself.

“Successfully survi-ving eleven weeks ofrecipe challenges aswell as one final nerve-racking cook-off makesthis reward feel like anachievement ratherthan a win.”

Taylor also won an iPad and a spaday for two at Mangwanani Spa.

Overthepast18years, sheworkedher way up the kitchen ranks on

game farms, in restau-rants and eventually inboutique hotels.

“Currently I do reci-pe development, foodwriting and blogging toearn a living.

“I write my own blog,Pomegranate Days asan expression of mylove for food.”

Off-road racing clubs join forces for fun-filled adventures for thewhole familyThe Western Cape Off-road Club(WCOC) and Western Cape JuniorOff-road Club (WCJOC) havejoinedforcestoofferthewholefam-ily an opportunity to race togetheron the same day and have fun rac-ing in off-road tournaments.

The WCJOC is currently the on-ly club in the country catering forchildren aged between 4 and 17 of-fering off-road racing for two-wheeler bikes and quads on vari-ous tracks around the WesternCape(Caledon,Velddrift,RiebeeckWest, Botriver, Ceres, Wellington

and Piketberg).The season consists of five club

championship rounds where rid-ers compete for the title of ClubChampion. All you have to do isjoin either WCJOC or WCOC, bothof which are Cape Town-based, tocompete for this prestigious title.Tracks vary between 5 km for the50 cc Bikes to 40 km’s for the openbikes (125 cc up to 250 cc) and offera variety of terrain from sand,rocky, and riverbeds to veldt. 50 ccbikes ride for 60 minutes whilst65 cc to 150 cc ride for two hours.

The seniors ride for three hourspushing themselves to the ex-treme, yet having fun at the sametime.

At the end of the race every com-petitorgetsrewardedwithafinish-er’s medal and all junior competi-tors receive a sweetie bag to re-charge their energy levels after therace.

All racing takes place in a con-trolled environment and under thewatchful eye of Motorsport SA.

To start racing you need the fol-lowing:

) Belong to a club – WCJOC orWCOC;

) Have a racing license (oneevent licenses should you wish totry it out first), a motorbike orquad, safety gear and supportiveparents/friends/family willing tobe your pit crew.

BLITSBAL: Hoër Jongenskool Paarl se eerste krieketspan het Saterdag ‘n groot slag geslaandeur Bishops op hulle tuisveld te klop. Bishops het eerste gekolf en is almal uitgeboul vir165. Die Paarliete het toe 165/9 aangeteken en om die groot stryd met een paaltjie tewenh. Hier boul François Moller. Beste bouler van die dag was Andru Nieuwoudt met syfersvan 4/28, en die beste kolwer Wian Gouws met 45 lopies.

NAASWENNERS: Laerskool Courtrai het onlangs aan die Tygerberg NLK Atletiekby-eenkoms deelgeneem. Hulle het algeheel tweede gekom in die spankompetisie, waar-aan twaalf kole deelgeneem het.

GIMNASTIEKSTERRE:Hierdie gimnaste vanWynland Gimnastiekklubhet uitsonderlik presteer bydie onlangse Suid-Afri-kaanse Kampioenskappevirartistieke gimnastiek, vlak-ke 4-6, in Pretoria.Voor van links is JasmineHowie (Vlak 5, SA-kampi-oen), Zani van Zyl (Vlak 5medalje op balk), LiebeRademeyer (Klas 2 Hoë-prestasiee, algeheel 2e),Zoë Julies (Klas 2 Hoëpre-stasie, algeheel 3e). ATLETIEK: Dié Larrie-atlete het met die louere weggestap vir skole met minder as 600 leer-ders by die Top-10-Atletiekbyeenkoms wat op Bredasdorp plaasgevind het. Angeline Smit(4de van links) is ook as beste hoërskooldogter aangewys, vir haar 37,17 m in die diskus virdogters o. 15. Van links staan Stephanie Smit, Tanya Schuurman, Manilinde Maritz, Nariekevan der Walt, Anastasia Pieterse en Joa Bloem. Afwesig was Carlyn Soenies en Sarah Krum-bock.

HOTROD WENNER: Dylan Nel, ’n graad10-leerling van Hugenote Hoërskool, presteertans in stock car racing. Hy het die afgelopenaweek deelgeneem aan die nasionale kwa-lifiserende ronde van die SA Kampioenskapin Brackenfell. By dié byeenkoms het hy ’nalgehele tweede plek behaal in sy klas (Ho-trods). Hy dring dan ook deur na die nasio-nale kampioenskap wat op 30 November inBloemfontein sal plaasvind.
