Violent attacks onprison guards inthe Western Cape are a growingsourceof concern inprisonsacrossthe province.

Ten correctional officers were seri-ously injured this month in two sepa-rate incidents in Paarl and Worcesterprisons.In the latest incident, nine prison

guards narrowly escaped death when27 prisoners initiated an attack, be-lieved to have been led by a 26-gangmember, on prison guards of the Dra-kenstein Correction Centre (VictorVerster) last Thursday morning.According to regional commission-

er, Delekile Klaas, correctional offi-cerswere conducting a routine searchof cell B9 in the Medium A Centre ataround08:00on22January,whenpris-oners, apparently mostly members ofthe notorious 26, 27 and 28 gangs, be-gan stabbing them.Nine guards were wounded, five of

them seriously, when they werestabbed on the head, neck and shoul-der with knives and other sharp ob-jects.They were rushed to Mediclinic Paarl

for treatment and seven offenders weretreatedat thecorrectional facility’sclinicfor light injuries.“What worries us most is the vicious-

ness of the attack. Their intention was tokill, not just to scare,” said Klaas.According to him, the attack was typi-

What really happens in prisonLISE BEYERS

After the brutal attack on prison warders atthe Drakenstein correctional facility lastweek, questions have been raised as to whois actually running the prisons.

A retired warder with 25 years experience,of which nine years were at the Drakensteincorrectional facility, spoke to Paarl Post thisweek on condition that he remain anonymousto avoid possible victimisation.

“Prisons are run by gangs. The authoritieshave absolutely no control of what is happen-ing there.

“Gang ‘generals’ arrange for weapons,drugs, electronic equipment and even womento be smuggled into the prison.

“Warders fear for their lives because crimi-nals know where they live and have no prob-lem in getting information to gang memberson the outside. So they basically just do whatthe ‘generals’ want. And so the cleaners too,becomesmugglersandcarriersforthegangs.”

Precisely a year ago there were variousshooting incidents on the road between theprison and Paarl, when vehicles in whichwarders were travelling, where shot at. In onesuch attack a warder was shot and injured.No arrests were made.

This is just one example of how warders arebeing intimidated.

“These attacks are instigated from withinthe prison walls. Gang leaders will enticeyounger gang members on the outside tolaunch such attacks just to gain status.”

The retired warder sketches a grim pictureof what happens at facilities such as the Drak-enstein prison.

“Up to 40 hardcore criminals are squashedtogether in a cell which has a capacity for only30 men.”

This, however, comes as no surprise, as re-

gional commissioner, Delekile Klaas, lastweek admitted to centres being overcrowded.According to him, Medium A, where the inci-dent happened, is overcrowded by 31%.

“There is no rehabilitation for prisonerswithin or outside of the facility. These crimi-nals just become more hardened as they fightfor life or death to climb the ranks of the vari-ous gangs.

“Even once paroled, they will soon land upbehind bars again. And prison personnelwhose duty it is to visit parolees at home, arejust too scared to enter those areas,” thesource further states.

Heexplains thataspiringgangmembers liv-ing in, for example, Chicago, are also giventasks from within the prison walls. They areenticed to commit crimes, to be arrested andthen end up themselves in prison. And it isthere, within the prison walls, that their actu-al training begins.

The main gangs are the Americans, PlayBoys, 26’s, 28’s and the feared 27’s.

“The26’s,whosememberswillweara$sign-tattoo, often on the face, are the money-gang.They can bring anything into the prison tosell. The 28’s are violent and sodomise andbrutalise other gang members as well as newprisoners.

“But the 27’s are the most feared becauseof their violent nature.”

These gangs are continuously at battle witheach other for status and control of the prison.

“I actually wouldn’t be surprised if the inci-dent at Drakenstein last week was one gangtrying to overpower the guards to get the keysto cells holding opposing gang members fora serious attack.”

And will or can this gang-controlled prisonservice ever change?

“No, never. It has gone too far and no forcewill ever be able to eradicate it.”

Volgens ’n ooggetuie op die toneel het diemotoris, Jeseral Claasen (29), beheer oor sybakkieverloortoehyvinnigbyKleinDraken-steinweg afgery het.

“Die motoris het beheer oor sy wit OpelCorsa-bakkie verloor en die voetgangers ge-tref wat naby Fred Liquors drankwinkel ge-staan het.”

Claasen het verder gery, vermoedelik omvan die toneel te probeer vlug. Hy het egterkort daarna in ’n boom vasgery, waarna diebakkie op die hoek van Grebestraat omge-slaan het.

Die stuk pad voor die “stoepe” is veral laat-nag bekend as ’n resiesbaan. Toeskouersslaan selfs kamp op by die stoepe om hierdieonwettige wedrenne te besigtig.

Daar word vermoed die beseerdes in diejongste botsing het juis op die stoepe van dieIvanhoe Park-gebou vergader om sodanigewedrenne te aanskou.

Claasen het Dinsdag 27 Januarie in diePaarl-landdroshof op ’n klag van dronkbe-stuur verskyn.

Bennie Saayman fromPaarl was recently an-nouncedastheheadcoachfor the Protea netballteam. A very humblinghonour she admits, butoneshe is looking forwardto grabbing with bothhands.According to Saayman,

the request caught her off-guard: “While I was in ameeting with the presi-dent and CEO of NetballSA, I was asked if I wouldaccept the position if itwas handed to me. It was a bit of shockand I requested time to makemy final de-cision. After two sleepless nights I madethe decision to accept the challenge.”Sheconfessed that thiswoulddefinitely

be the single biggest test in her career.“I know that the job as head coach will

be very challenging, but I know the pres-sures of the position and am looking for-ward to serving my country.”Saayman was born in Port Elizabeth

and moved to Paarl in 1973. Forty yearslater she is still here.

The love for the game ofnetball is deeply rooted inthe Saayman family.“My daughter Annelie

Lucas is a netball organis-er at Paarl Gimnasiumand we share the love fornetball. I played 1st teamnetball and representedEastern Province atschool level.”Being head coach will

take up loads of her time.“It is nearly impossible

forme toparticipate or getinvolved in any sport oth-er than netball. I am alsopresident of the BolandandWesternProvincenet-ball unions. While I focuson coaching, I also keepbusy with the administra-tive side of things.”Hergoalsandobjectives

for her new job arestraight forward: “I wish

to take the team to a consistent interna-tional top three-ranked side as well as tohelp the game reach 100% professionalstatus.”If you are an aspiring young netball

player, follow Saayman’s easy advice,“Set yourself some goals, see failures as

motivation and learn from those mis-takes. Remember to never stop chasingyour dreams.”Saayman will be taking the national

netball team to theWorld Cup which willbe held in Sydney in August this year.

OnMonday, SinaChrist-mann (29), cycled over DuToitskloof Pass and decid-ed to continue down Lan-genhoven Avenue intoPaarl. To her delight shesawasignboardpointingtothe Deutche Klub in Klein Parys.“Thiswasa surpriseand I rode

towards the club to see what aGerman club is doing in Africa.”When she told her story to Jac-

ques Boshoff, Nic van Wyk andManieMarais, they could almost

not believe what they heard.After completingher studies in

teaching and theology Sina wastraining to become a paraglidinginstructor. But she suffered aknee injury and decided to recu-perate while cycling and travel-

ling.Sina had previously

spent some time in CapeTown, where she hadlearnt to paraglide and fellin lovewith thissport.Andso in July 2014 she left Ger-many to cycle through Eu-rope and Africa.She cycled from Ham-

burg to Athens, Greece,fromwheresheflewacrossthe Mediterranean Sea toCairo. And here her realadventure began, cyclingthrough Ethiopia, Kenya,Tanzania, Malawi, Mo-zambique and Zimbabwe,

before hitting the South Africanborder.“The only places where I felt

unsafe were in eastern Europeand then again in Ethiopia.“The rest of the time I, howev-

er, encountered great hospitali-

ty. I would often simply knock onsomeone’s door and ask whetherIcouldpitchmytentoutsidetheirhouse.“In South Africa, especially up

north , therewouldbesignsalongthe road: ‘High crime area’. Andpeople would warn me about mysafety. But I never had any prob-lems here and everyone wel-comed me very warmly.“It has been a wonderful expe-

rience to have travelled amongstso many cultures, meeting suchcolourful people. Such a journeyteaches you a lot about yourself.”When she reaches Cape Town,

Sina would have cycled almost12 000 km.And at the German Club on

Monday evening she was treatedto agoodoldSouthAfricanbraai,and they even arranged accom-modation for her at a local guesthouse.

Crime is escalating in the valley. In one breath you read of a hijackingsituation in broad daylight in Wellington and in the next, you are con-fronted by yet another armed robbery at a shop in Paarl Mall. And thatwhilemanyshopperswerebusyconducting theirbusiness in thecentre.It appears as if criminals have a free pass to our valley.And now, to top it all, one is confronted by the chaos that reigns in

ourprisons.Onewouldliketothinkthatcriminalsarearrested,chargedwith theircrimes, foundguilty incourtand thenkeptbehindbars,whilebeing taught a lesson or two for the sins they have committed.But no. It now rather sounds as if imprisonment is only the beginning

of a criminal’s life of crime.How can one expect crime to be seriously addressed if the price that

criminals are supposed to pay for their crimes, only furthers their ca-reers incrime,andprisonwardersandtheir familiesarebeingthreaten-ed by gang members? What is happening in these so-called rehabilita-tion centres is shocking, to say the least.

quick to pull people off during theday and give them tickets, but youdon’tsee themanywhereduringthenight to stop the real problems andto save people’s lives.Where are our police and traffic

officials to stop the drinking and

driving and stopping these peoplefromcausingdamage to themselvesand to others?We also need more speed bumps

on the main roads to stop peoplefrom speeding. Our municipalityneeds to domore for us tomake ourcommunity safe.If anyone is reading this article,

operations at all liquor outlets, pubsand clubs during the festive periodwhich started in October 2014 andends on 31 January.During this period compliance in-

spections were done regarding timeframesandthesellingof liquortoun-derage persons. All the relevant out-lets in the Paarl area complied withthe regulations as stipulated in theLiquor Act.Incidents that occurred outside the

The Drakenstein Heritage Foundation (DHF)spent much time and energy trying to ensurethat the historic Victorian house, which usedto stand at the corner of Derksen and LoopStreets, was retained.

When the owner applied for a demolitionpermit, we opposed it, but thereafter the build-ing was allowed to stand empty, which led tovandalism and invasion by homeless people.At no time did the owner make an effort to pre-vent this, even though it is against the law toallow your property to deteriorate to such anextent that it becomes unsalvageable. The oldhouse was eventually beyond saving and de-molished, leaving the plot clear for “develop-ment”.

What is left are a few beautiful trees, includ-ing a magnificent wild fig, which appears tobe more than 100 years old. These are valuableassets in the middle of the concrete jungle andshould be protected for the benefit of all.

MembersoftheDHFhavespentmanyvolun-tary days and weeks campaigning for a Green-ingPolicyinDrakensteinandhavehadthefullsupport of the mayor and her council. We trustthat this policy will be upheld and the ownerprevented from cutting down these trees.

It would be a tragedy if the trees had to paythe price for years of cynical neglect.

“Die herwinningsmateriaal word by dieoorlaaistasie afgelaai, waar dit dan verwerkword deur mense wat in diens geneem wordkragtens die Uitgebreide Openbare Werke-program (EPWP,ExtendedPublicWorksPro-gramme), onder die toesig van WEC konsul-tante,” verduidelik munisipale bestuurderJohann Mettler.

Monte Christo continuesto serve the poorThe Food Centre at Monte Christo Minis-tries has been forced to close its doors dueto liquidation.

The Food Centre, which opened in 2008and was situated in the Dal Josaphat indus-trial area, fed an average of 5 000 people dai-ly.

This included schoolchildren, smallerchildren at soup kitchens and patients inPaarl Hospital and Sonstraal Hospital.

This week Aletia Grundling, the managerof Monte Christo Miqlat, confirmed that thecentre had to be closed downdue to financialrestraints.

“We had lost various government con-tracts and the rental increased a lot.”

But according to Aletia, Monte ChristoMiqlat is continuing with their many otherprojects such as Tiffany’s, Lukhanyo andFull Circle Ministries – an outreach projectassisting street people.

“Our football project for youth is in fullswing and we strive to continue helping themany impoverished people in the area to getback on to their feet.”

Local darts season kicks offThe Open ChallengeCompetition was the firstfixtureof the season for thePaarl Darts Union.Players could be in for a

very tough season as theywill compete in boardgames against WellingtonDarts and inter-districtgames within Cape Wine-lands Darts/Boland.Clubs will participate in

the annual Easter Tourna-ment at the AmbagsvalleiSports Centre.Players also look for-

ward to selection to the an-nual All Cape Tournament

which will be held duringthe firstweekendofMay inCeres. Themain event willbe for players participat-ing at theDarts SouthAfri-ca National Champion-ships hosted by GautengDarts in Johannesburg inJuly.On Saturday 31 January

the union will hold anOpen Competition at Am-bagsvallei Sports Centre,starting at 13:00.Entry fee will be R20.

This competition is open toall registered/non-affiliat-ed persons.

The AGM of Paarl DartsUnion will take place onWednesday 4 February atthe Ambagsvallei SportsCentre, starting at 20:00.All registered clubs or
