IT is high time that the community of Paarl steps in as taxpaying citi-zens and take back the Berg River.

For a long time now it has been no secret that the Arboretum isno longer the safe tree park which it is meant to be. In the past holidayseason alone, two attacks took place and at least one of the victimswas a foreign tourist. But the rest of the river banks in central Paarlare being equally abused.

Although the Municipality does take care to see to the trimming ofthe banks and general maintenance, the area is being overrun by va-grants, loiterers and litterers. And despite clearly displayed signs for-bidding camping, the consumption of alcohol, the playing of musicand more, these regulations are blatantly ignored. Even sexcapadeshave been openly displayed here.

Paarl is one of the very few towns in South Africa which has sucha spectacular river running through its heart, but law enforcementis sadly lacking.Whatshouldbe theprideofPaarl anda tourist attrac-tion, is becoming an embarrassment.

Residents await municipal action with bated breath.

“Luister, julle moet wéét daar’sgeld in akkers.”

KindershetgerekenoomNiekiekonmaklikpraat,wantso’nknol-letjie is klein, bitter klein.

By oom Niekie gelewer, was ditmeer as net kitskos vir sy swyne.

Endit alles sonder ’nsweempievan ’n koolstofvoetspoor.

Wys jou net. Eureka!

Kontak haar by 021 975 7396/ 082828 3229, stuur ’n faks na 021 975137 of stuur ’n e-pos na [email protected].

OPGERIG.

Daar was dus sommige strate watin die dag sonder water was.

Wine trade looks toAsia and USA for growthTHE European markets have matured andtheir economies will not recover within thenext decade; however the USA and Asiahold promise for the SA wine industry, which is facing its toughest time yet. Africaalso has potential for growth.

This was the message from various pre-senters at the seventh Nedbank VinPro In-formation Day in Somerset West, where530 delegates from the wine industry va-lue-chain were clearly looking for answers.

Thewineindustryisplaguedbylowprofitmargins, decreasing sales and a shrinkingarea under vines.

“We should consistently make good wi-nes and market ourselves with a simple, sincere and repetitive message,” said guestspeaker Johann Rupert, prominent busi-nessman and owner of L’Ormarins Estate.

He expressed concern about the dum-ping of cheap wines from overseas into thedomestic market, but warned against un-certified bulk wine exports to Europe.

“The day that Europe suspects us ofdumping, we can forget about exportingany more wine to them.”

Marian Kopp, managing director of Nie-derkirchener Weinmacher eG in Germany, predicted that the USA and Asia will drivea 6% growth in global wine consumption

over the next four years.Inthemeantime,SouthAfrica’sdomestic

wine market is stagnant and wine produ-cers’ profitability is the lowest in eight ye-ars.

“OfabottleofwinesoldatR70inarestau-rant, the waiter receives a R7 tip, whereasthe producer only receives R3. Producers’income did not keep up with soaring pro-duction costs,” said Phillip Retief, head ofVan Loveren Vineyards.

“This means we have not only grouped stationeryitems according to product categories – for example, placing all writing instruments together - to take outthe two and fro, but introduced assistants who canhelp decipher complicated stationery lists and finditems more easily.”

Stationery items themselves have also been care-fully selected to deliver both quality and value.
