Our Club History

In 1988, a group of 20 decisive ladies, successful in their professional and business careers andbeautiful in body, mind and spirit, chose to share their blessings with the more depressedcommunities around them in Muntinlupa. Thus was born the Zonta Club of Muntinlupa &Environs. One of over 40 Zonta Clubs in the Philippines today, ZCME is at the forefront of projects aimed atempowering women through educational, social, economic and political initiatives.Almost a decade after the club was chartered. Zonta International launched one its most importantservice and advocacy campaign , ZISVAW or Zonta International Srrategies On Violence AgainstWomen during the Zonta Inetrnational Convention held in Detroit,Michigan in 1996. It is in thiscontext that we relate why SAGIP was established as the centerpiece project of Zonta Club ofMUNTINLUPA. Delegate and incoming District Gov. Brenda L. Tanjutco learned the imperatives ofintervening on the prevalent violence perpetrated against women especially the marginalized onesduring the training held there. With this experience, she prepared a project proposal to establish acrisis response center for the women of MUNTINLUPA and presented this to then Mayor IgnacioBUNYE of MUNTINLUPA. The club officers headed by President Laly Aldeguer were presentduring the presentation and the approval of the Mayor to establish a crisis response center in the city. His executive assistant, Vicky Bunye who had worked in a crisis center on violence against women inHawaii convened various department heads and the officers of the club to undergo an intensivetraining and foster a program of cooperation among the partners of SAGIP or SAKLOLO at GABAYsa INA'T PAMILYA SA MUNTINLUPA. This is one of the few existing VAW centers in thePhilippines and in the world where Zonta clubs have been established.SAGIP is a 24/7 crisis response center on violence against women and children. Upon the rescue ofthe victim, It offers an intake report which when so warranted becomes the basis for investigationand the filing of charges by the police against the perpetrator. It provides free legal services andpsychological therapy to the clients and free shelter for two weeks. After this period, they are sent toinstitutions which provide haven and care for the women and children.

Zonta International has recognized its continuing service as a model project on VAW when itreceived one of the three service project awards in the ZI Florida Convention and in the 2015 District17 Conference in Bangkok, it was elevated to the Hall of Flame Awards which is reserved forcontinuing excellent services rendered by a Zonta club.
