SHELTERBOX’S SEPTEMBER STRETCH

EMERGENCY PACIFIC APPEAL

At the end of September and start of October a string of catastrophic large scale disasters struck areas around the Pacific within days of each other. Typhoons, tsunamis and earthquakes unleashed the full brutality of their force affecting hundreds of thousands of people and wiping out whole communities in the Philippines, Samoa and Sumatra.

The unprecedented scale and frequency of these disasters has proved to be one of the biggest challenges ShelterBox has ever had to face. There are now ShelterBoxes and ShelterBox disaster relief tents on the ground in all three countries but with the destruction caused by these disasters still unfolding, there remains an urgent need for boxes of aid.

The Indonesian island of Sumatra was struck by two earthquakes in less than 24 hours causing wide-spread destruction on a massive level. ShelterBox, who already had ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) member Andy Holland positioned in Jakarta, responded immediately, moving Andy north to Sumatra, mobilising ShelterBoxes and deploying SRT team

members Mike Greenslade (AU), Becky Maynard (UK) and Shane Revill (UK).

So far enough aid for close to 10,000 people has been sent to Sumatra with more to follow. With heavy rains soon set to be lashing the island, SRT member Becky Maynard has stressed the importance of delivering aid as quickly as possible.

‘One of the key problems is the weather. It’s the start of the rainy season and when the rains come they are powerful. Tarpaulins will have little chance of standing up to the onslaught - it’s vital we get shelter to them that’s capable of withstanding the conditions likely to hit them,’ she said.

The scenes of devastation have been equally appalling in the Philippines. The capital, Manila, was hit by Typhoon Ketsana which caused horrific damage and left thousands in need of emergency shelter. SRT members Lizzy Treglown (UK) and Peter Pearce (AU), who had only recently returned from the Philippines after delivering aid in the wake of Typhoon Morakot, were immediately deployed as news of the disaster reached ShelterBox.

Lizzy said: ‘The need for ShelterBoxes here is huge, the damage is extensive and the scale of this disaster is overwhelming – it’s very tough.’

Aid for more than 2,000 people has been sent to the Philippines with Lizzy and Peter working hard to do the most, for the most, in extremely difficult and challenging conditions.

Between Typhoon Ketsana striking the Philippines and the Sumatran earthquake, a series of tsunamis struck the Pacific paradise of Samoa, destroying more than 20 villages and leaving thousands homeless. ShelterBox, utilising its global resources, immediately deployed SRT members Owen Smith (NZ) and Walter Van der Kley (NZ) from New Zealand and set in process moving 100 ShelterBoxes from Melbourne, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand. 40 of these boxes have now arrived in Samoa thanks to a collaborative effort between ShelterBox, NZAID and the New Zealand Defence Force.

Owen and Walter have travelled far and wide across Samoa, delivering aid to stricken families who said they were the first aid workers to reach them.

ShelterBox Founder and CEO, Tom Henderson, said this string of disasters presented a unique challenge for

ShelterBox but a challenge that is being met thanks to the hard work of ShelterBox volunteers, staff, response teams and the public’s generosity.

‘The generosity and compassion from the public has been incredible and deeply humbling,’ he said. ‘Donations of time, money and energy have come from all quarters and we’re so very grateful. But there’s still a long road ahead and we need to ensure we help as many people as we can.

‘This has been one of ShelterBox’s most challenging set of deployments to date and we are appealing for donations to enable us to alleviate the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe who have lost everything.’

Donations of time, money and energy are all received by ShelterBox with open arms. Anyone who wishes to donate should call the donation hotline on 0300 0300 500 (+44300 300 500 from outside the UK) or visit www.shelterbox.org.

September was a non-stop month for ShelterBox with a series of disasters taking place right from the beginning of the month until the very end. Early September saw the first of the earthquakes in Indonesia measuring 7.3 in magnitude and causing massive damage to the south of Jakarta, the country’s capital. ShelterBox sent 824 ShelterBoxes to the country, delivering aid to thousands affected by the quake. On the other side of the globe, ShelterBox provided emergency shelter for close to 500 people who lost their homes in Mexico after Hurricane Jimena. Tremendous efforts by ShelterBox France and the generosity of the French Military saw ShelterBox deliver aid for up to 7,000 people in Niger, West Africa. West Africa was hit by some of the worst flooding in living memory, with close to 100,000 people in Agadez, Niger being affected. Ougadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso was also hit hard by the floods and now, thanks to the help of UNICEF and Newquay Airport, aid for up to 5,000 people has been sent to the country.

ShelterBox General Manager Lasse Petersen said: ‘Although this has been a testing time, stretching ShelterBox’s global resources, the hard work of everyone involved with the charity has really paid off. The warehouse team at ShelterBox HQ, and the volunteers who help them, have been incredible. They’ve pulled out all the stops in getting the job done.’
