INTERTWINEDFor centuries, Christians have observed November 1st as All Saints Day, a day to recognize and honor all the saints that have gone before us in faith. This Sunday, November 4, Lakeside UMC will observe All Saints Sunday.The Roman Catholic Church highlights the role of saints, put-ting great emphasis on those persons who are named officially as Saints of the Church. In the United Methodist Church, as in other mainline Protestant denominations, the emphasis is on a less grand and more democratic recognition.In our church tradition and worship, we focus on those persons in our faith community who have died in the past year. We celebrate their faith and their contributions to our own faith, but we do not hold them up as unblemished and holy people. Rather, we celebrate their being added to “the great cloud of witnesses” upon which the Church and its many members still rely today.This was symbolized last year by the introduction of our Bell Banner. We hung bells for Lakeside members who had died in the past, and this year we will add five more bells representing Lakeside members who died since last year’s All Saints Day: Max Harris, J.B. Rivers, Deborah Hamlin, Allene Stephens, and Paula Grape.This is a very moving and memorable service, and I hope you will make a special effort to attend. We spend much of life trying to avoid grief and sadness, but this is an occasion that allows us to recognize and celebrate that our lives are inextrica-bly intertwined with those who have gone before us – much as the bells become intertwined on the banner. In the Spirit, they remain with us still. – Mark

PAULA GRAPE August 1, 1922 – October 8, 2012

When Paula Grape’s daughter, Marilyn, came in the day after Paula’s funeral to pick up cards, pictures, et cetera, she was carrying this blue bag over her shoulder. In going through Paula’s apartment she came across it and knew it was meant for the Lion’s Club and Jack Andrews. It is full to the brim with eyeglasses.

JOY CLASS We missed Jack and Donna last Sunday, but Wendall is our faithful sub. We will be studying the New Testament through November with lots of “food for thought” about faith. Two important dates are coming up. December 16th will be our Christmas Party and lunch. This will be “bring a dish” and is always delicious. Also, don’t forget your “dirty Santa’s gift. We are missing David and keep him in our prayers. Blessing to all - see you in Sunday School and Church! – Linda Coffman

Consecration Sunday Update

Thank you to all who have sub-mitted your 2013 pledges! Forty-one pledges have been received so far, totaling $122,020. Approxi-mately 20 pledges remain out, and, if submitted with pledges on par with 2012, this will most likely put us very close to last year’s pledge total of $155,085. We continue to be extremely careful in all our expenditures. Even so, it will take an exceptional effort on everyone’s part to meet all our commitments this year – we remain far behind in our appor-tionment payments. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call the church office. – Ginny Evans

“She thinks I can’t do any wrong,” Furqueron said, patting Dixie on the head and rubbing the fur behind her ears. “She appreciates the things that you do for her.”

Still, she acknowledges that taking care of her faithful companion, along with herself and an ailing son, on what she receives from Social Security can be a challenge.

That is where Quapaw Quarter United Method-ist Church in Little Rock, she said, has been a godsend — and a dog blessing. Once a month, church volunteers distribute bags of dog and cat food along with groceries for low-income families.

Quapaw Quarter is one of a growing number of United Methodist churches across the country discovering that one way to help the poor is to help their four-legged friends. Pet ministries not only set tails wagging, but also serve press-ing human needs for companionship.

And spirituality, said Joe Hirsch, chair of the Hearts & Paws pet ministry at Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, Pa., “If you want to see the love of Christ, just look at a pet,” Hirsch said. “The pet gives you unconditional love the same way Christ does. He doesn’t care what color you are or how rich or how poor.”

Traveling down an isolated country road toward her mobile home, 75-year-old Katherine Furqueron can count on being eagerly greeted by a companion at the front door.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s

service and with gratitude for the victory”. There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of busi-ness activities at 11am.

In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the presi-dent should “issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government

buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.”

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service men in the history of the United States and the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans”. Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served.
