Could our “God sensibilities” adapt so that our openness to God ex- tends from worship into the workplace or our homes? Could our prayer in the sanctuary become our prayer in the car, in bed? Could our voice rise in song not only in the pew but in the shower, on the trail? Perhaps it is all a version of what Paul meant when he told the Christians in essalonica to “pray without ceasing?” How might our lives, our hearts, change if our worship were to extend to every moment of our lives? How might our priorities change were we no longer content simply to tread water in our faith? Perhaps our surprise will be to learn that we are endowed with gills for land or water, that whatever our location or situation, our lives give evidence of the presence and love of God. – Mark

Amphibious Spirituality

What’s the purpose of worship? The Westminster Confession declares that the chief end of life is to "glorify God and enjoy God forever." That may or may not, however, be what’s on the mind of each person coming to wor-ship on Sunday morning. A variety of factors influence our decision to attend church: habit, fellowship, guilt, image, study, fear, longing, and on and on. We often come to worship with mixed motives and confused convictions. Our indecision often results, therefore, in the equivalent of treading water in worship. We come, yet we don’t have the clear intention of opening ourselves to God, of pursuing new paths of service and discipleship. We come hoping, in essence, for lightning to strike – for God to speak so clearly and unequivo-cally to us that the life of faith seems abundantly plain. But until that moment of stark revelation, we tread water – hoping for, daring, God to speak to us. But rather than tread water, perhaps our intention should be to become more amphibious in our faith. Amphibians are creatures equally at home on land or in water, and perhaps our aim should be to be aware of and open to God whether in church or away. Could our “God sensibilities” adapt so that our openness to God ex-tends from worship into the workplace or our homes? Could our prayer in the sanctuary become our prayer in the car, in bed? Could our voice rise in song not only in the pew but in the shower, on the trail?Perhaps it is all a version of what Paul meant when he told the Christians in Thessalonica to “pray without ceasing?” How might our lives, our hearts, change if our worship were to extend to every moment of our lives? How might our priorities change were we no longer content simply to tread water in our faith? Perhaps our surprise will be to learn that we are endowed with gills for land or water, that whatever our location or situation, our lives give evidence of the presence and love of God.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

A UMNS ReportBy Barbara Dunlap-Berg

United Methodists in Africa, Europe, the Philippines and the United States are packing their suitcases, gathering their Books of Discipline and perusing reams of documents as they prepare for days of deliberation and celebra-tion.It’s annual conference time in the United States and around the world. May and June are the most popular months for United Methodism’s annual (regional) conference sessions, with Eastern Pennsylvania starting the cycle May 16-18. The last U.S. conference to convene will be Desert Southwest on June 27-30. Oklahoma City will be meeting the evening of Mon., May 27 through Thurs., May 30, 2013.High on the agendas for all annual conferences are four proposed amendments to The United Methodist Church’s Constitution. The 2012 General Conference approved all four amendments. To see the amendments in their en-tirety go to: http://www.umc.org/site/apps/nlnet/content3.aspx?c=lwL4KnN1LtH&b=5259669&ct=13113939

Fatherhood is pretending the gift you love most is soap-on-a-rope. – Bill Cosby

Project Transformation is a summer literacy camp for under-served children in urban areas of Oklahoma. The camp provides children one-on-one time with mentors and leadership in reading, computers, arts and crafts, music and theater, field trips and enrichment activities. The program is sponsored by the Oklahoma United Meth-odist Conference, AmeriCorps, and community individu-als and organizations. Project Transformation now serves over 500 children in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Bartlesville with the help of 55 AmeriCorps members, 1,000+ volunteers, and more than 50 partner churches. This year, Lakeside will be back-up help only. We will not have a regular time, but need vol-unteers to be prepared to fill-in on an emergency basis.

(Contact Mary Ellen Cromwell if you are interested in

volunteering your time with these children. )

Molly and I computed the rough dimensions of Noah’s Ark. Then we went to the parking lot to lay out toilet paper to try and get a visual of just how big it really was. Here is Molly laying out a roll for the length. – Derek Smith

Lakeside’s annual blood drive will be August 25th. For more information, contact Mary Ellen Cromwell.

A golf tournament will be held June 29th at Cedar Valley Golf

Course to raise money for the church. Contact

Curtis Cromwell for details.

A big Lakeside Thank You to Curtis & Mary Ellen Cromwell and John & Pam Green for the beautiful gardening in front of the church, and to Barbara Smith for donating furniture to the parsonage.

For those of you whom I have not met, my name is Rev. Adam Leath-ers and I have been blessed with the oppor-tunity to serve as your new CJAMM* Direc-tor. I have been work-ing closely with Rev. Dr. Stan Basler for two years and have also served on the pastoral staff at Penn Redemption UMC since

May, 2011. I have seen the transformative power of God’s grace for those who are incarcerated and their families as well as the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and all those who make this ministry so wonderful. I give thanks to God for the passion of my mentor and friend Stan Basler and am looking forward to expanding his vision for this ministry.I have outlined three objectives for Criminal Justice and Mercy Ministries as we proceed into the future, and I hope you will join me in making these goals a reality.#1 Develop more partnerships with local United Methodist Churches and Annual Conference Ministries. #2 Increase the CJAMM volunteer base. #3 Develop more financial and structural efficiency and transparency. With God’s help I believe we can achieve these goals and make this already great ministry even better.I look forward to continuing to work with our CJAMM Board and all of our volunteers and pray God’s blessing upon each and every one of you.
