Because of occasional mishaps in the early years involving furni- ture and noggins, we learned to rearrange the room before beginning, pushing back tables and chairs to make room for flailing arms and legs. en, we would go at each other, a two-man bout oſten graduat- ing into three-man or four-man bouts if the Old Man began to get too early an advantage. We don’t do this anymore. I may still be the biggest, but I now bruise too easily – my feelings, that is. I long for those old rasslin’ matches. It’s partly out of nostalgia for those (mostly) delightful days when my sons were young, but it’s also because I prefer those matches over the ones that have come with time’s advance. Not only does my body not move as nimbly as perhaps it did 20 years ago, but the bouts I’ve faced as an adult are much more bruising – to my soul, that is. My biggest opponent as an adult has been myself. It has oſten been easier to accuse others for my discomfort than to examine myself honestly. Fights that went un-fought and forgiveness that went un- spoken have come back to pin me on the mat. e furniture that needs to be pushed back now is all interior; there are walls and fixed reference points inside me that have tripped me up again and again. It reminds me of Jacob’s night-long struggle in Genesis 32. When Jacob’s opponent (God?) moves to depart as the sun rises, Ja- cob refuses to let go until his opponent blesses him. He gets the blessing, but he also receives a blow to his hip that hobbles him. Maybe I just haven’t held on long enough. Maybe I’m afraid of being hobbled, or maybe I’m afraid of being blessed. - Mark

LAKESIDER August 2012

FROM THE PASTOR

The

Time to Rassle

As a father to three sons, there were many times in the early years when one or more of us would be seized by an uncontrollable urge to do some rasslin’ (‘wrestling,’ if you don’t know the proper terminol-ogy). Because of occasional mishaps in the early years involving furni-ture and noggins, we learned to rearrange the room before beginning, pushing back tables and chairs to make room for flailing arms and legs.

Then, we would go at each other, a two-man bout often graduat-ing into three-man or four-man bouts if the Old Man began to get too early an advantage.

It has often been easier to accuse others for my discomfort than to examine myself honestly. Fights that went un-fought and forgiveness that went un-spoken have come back to pin me on the mat. The furniture that needs to be pushed back now is all interior; there are walls and fixed reference points inside me that have tripped me up again and again.

It reminds me of Jacob’s night-long struggle in Genesis 32. When Jacob’s opponent (God?) moves to depart as the sun rises, Ja-cob refuses to let go until his opponent blesses him. He gets the blessing, but he also receives a blow to his hip that hobbles him.

Maybe I just haven’t held on long enough. Maybe I’m afraid of being hobbled, or maybe I’m afraid of being blessed.

- Mark

PROJECT TRANSFORMATION REPORTProject Transformation was a great success this year, and what an incredible way to reach out and serve others. This is a program through the United Methodist Church to work with children from first through sixth grade for the summer. They are provided activities from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00

p.m. in June and July. This gives these “at risk” children a place to be for the summer, and very high quality pro-gramming. We help each year with their reading program from 9:45 a.m. to 12:00. This year we had 17( total) volunteers: Belinda King, Barbara Smith, Pastor Mark, and Roxie Yetter were there every day. Other volunteers were: Sylvia Frank, Curtis & Mary Ellen Cromwell, Teresa Bockus, Donna Andrews, Donna Kaiser, Susan Jones, Steve Ferguson, Sunny Richardson, Linda Coffman, Carle Brocksmith, Stephen Baca, & Cindy Brown. We go to help others, but in return we find that the blessing is ours. Children that look into your face and ask, “Will you be here again tomorrow? Thanks for being my friend!” Sign up next year and find out how serving others can be a real inspiration!! - Mary Ellen Cromwell (405) 373-1578

A Blood Drive will be held here on Sunday, August 26th from 11:30 - 2:00.

Check your calendars for a fall trip to the Regional Food Bank and a couple of short Mission Trips.

We go to help others, but in return we find that the blessing is ours

Joe Hock, our 4th pastor, died July 9, 2012, leaving his wife, Poppy, whom he had known since the age of ten.

From Mary Ellen Cromwell: Thank you, Lakeside Family, for all your cards, calls, food, and especially your prayers! I do believe prayer is a powerful thing, and my prognosis was nothing short of a miracle! Thanks be to God, and to my family and friends for all your support for so many years...I am So Blessed!!!

A NOTE FROM THE TRUSTEE’S: To: All Lakeside MembershipRe: Use of Church Facilities When any member or committee uses our church facilities, please make sure everything is cleaned and all furni-ture is returned as it was found. Make sure all tables and counter tops are wiped down and trash is taken out to the blue cans found in the west cov-ered breezeway. Do not leave food or containers in the kitchen or refrigera-tors. If you changed the thermostats, return the temperature to their origi-nal position. It is important that we all do our part to maintain our facilities the best we can,and keep utilities at a reasonable level. We want to share what we have, but always be responsible in our care-taking. Thank You!!

We appreciate all the Sunday School Classes for providing GREETERS AND USHERS every Sunday. Following is the schedule for the next two months:

August - Share Class September - Youth and Wesley Class

Help save money - make a choice to receive your newsletter by email. Special bonus: it will be in color!

Lakeside UMC Book Club

Fourth Wednesday of each month10:00 a.m. in the church Parlor.

From the Share Class: Hello from the Share Class, and we hope everyone is surviving this Oklahoma summer heat!! We will be celebrating July and August class member birth-days with a breakfast one Sunday in August. Summer is a hard time to get everyone there on the same weekend, so our class picnic will be in late September or October to avoid vacations and 100 degree temperatures. We are beginning a new Bill Hybels six week study on Sunday, July 22nd. The title of the study is “Lessons on Love.” The Share Class will begin making Peanut Brittle ear-ly this year to provide enough for elections in November, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Be sure to get any large orders in early!!! Please keep Sylvia Frank in your prayers as she begins her battle with breast cancer!!

From the Joy Class: Like most of you, we in the Joy Class are trying to keep cool these days. And, due to the heat, comfort of home, vacations etc., a few of our members have played hooky from class. We miss them and pray for their safe re-turn. The past month we have been studying about Samuel, David and Solomon. What strong, spiritual leaders they pro-vided for Israel. Could we use them today? Hope you are having a good, safe summer. Remember: it’s hot, so check on the senior folks.

Lakeside Garage Sale

We are planning a fund-raising ga-rage sale in September. We need your help now! Please start clean-ing out your garages, cabinets, clos-ets for items to donate for the garage sale. Don’t wait until the last min-ute, bring them to the church now. We have set up a corner in the Share Class Sunday School room to store these items until the sale. We do not have any exact date for the garage sale yet. We are going to wait for the weather to cool down. If you have something large to donate and need help getting it to the church, please let us know. Remember the more antiques, collectibles, furniture, baby items and other cool stuff you donate, the more funds we can raise. These funds will be used for gen-eral operating costs of the church. - Ginny Evans and Kristi Smith
