From the Pastor

Obedient Unto Death

Many are the hearts that chafe against the thought of obedience. It calls to mind bitter servitude or loss of freedom. The obedient person is constrained to follow the dictates of someone else, and even if the other is kind or considerate, the thought of obedience seems better fit for a dog. An obedient dog is a delight to see, a creature “at one” with its owner, perfectly attuned to its owner’s wishes. But an obedient person?

We praise our Savior Jesus for his willingness to be “obedient unto death,” but we do not wish to follow him there. Obedience takes us where we do not wish to go. It takes us, if we allow it, without asking our opinion, without soliciting our input. But if our obedi-ence is a dragging thing, it is not obedience; it is yet our stubborn willfulness. We want to be free to do as we wish, when we wish.

But that is precisely when we lose our freedom. The Bible is clear about the unalterable fact that there is something bad the mat-ter with us. It’s what we know as Original Sin. Like our rebellious forbears Adam and Eve, we think we know what’s best for us. We do not. For fear of what God requires of us, we remain enslaved to our aimless whims.

We long for Easter, but we flee the cross. We wish to rise to new life without the pain and suffering of death, but if we wish to participate in resurrection, we must first be dead. To be obedient as our Savior was obedient, we place our trust - our lives - in the hands of the Creator who knows us best and knows what will quiet and calm our fevered souls.

Anyone that would like to know more about this challenge please contact Greg King or Mary Ellen Cromwell for details.

Another big ThAnK You for all the food for Skyline. Competition seems to go a long way at Lakeside, and the pantry at Skyline is very much in need of food at this time. Thanks, Lakesiders, for your giving and caring hearts! The Share Class won the competition, and are looking forward to a great breakfast! Also, thanks so much for all the prom dresses and accessories for Skyline. They were so appreciative of everything we sent. They had not received much jewelry and were very excited that we sent some.

SATURDAY:

Dear Lakesiders, our family really appreciates the love that you have shown us over the last few months. We have been comforted by the support we have gotten while we have grieved the losses of my sister and my brothers. We were completely astounded at the generosity shown us at the baby shower for our new baby, Lucy Ryan. We want to thank everyone for the hugs, prayers, cards and letters, plants, dinner to our home, and all of the beautiful baby gear. We truly belong to the best church anyone could hope to be a part of. God bless you all!

Love, Kerwin and Carle and Maisy and Annie and Lucy Brocksmith

Dear Lakeside Family,

I cannot fully express my deep gratitude for your generous gift! The $1,200 you gave me covered my airfare to visit my son, Daniel, in Austria. It was a wonderful trip and time with my son that I will always treasure. I am deeply moved and humbled by your love.
