The ParticularsNorth Texas begins the 2007 season in Norman, Okla. against the No. 8-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The game will be televised nationally on FOX Sports Net and will also be carried on the Mean Green Radio Network. Kickoff will be at 6:10 p.m.

The PrincipalsNorth Texas is coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in 2006 but has high hopes for 2007 as the Todd Dodge era begins. The Mean Green returns a solid nucleus on defense with nine starters back. The offense features the return of a former national rushing champion in Jamario Thomas. Oklahoma was 11-3 in 2006 but finished the season by dropping a heartbreaker to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl 43-42. The Sooners return 14 offensive players who have been part-time starters and 11 who have started on the defense.

The SeriesOklahoma is 6-0 in the series with North Texas that dates back to 1987. The Sooners have scored exactly 37 points in the last three games against North Texas, winning 37-9 in 1998, 37-10 in 2001 and 37-3 in 2003.

A Closer Look at Oklahoma HeadCoachBobStoops - Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops has a career record of 86-19 in eight years at Oklahoma. Stoops has won four Big 12 Conference championships and has coached the Sooners in three national championship games. His 2000 team finished the season with a perfect 13-0 record, winning a national title and earning Stoops the National Coach of the Year award. He was an All-America defensive back at Iowa, playing for Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry.

The North Texas locker room is closed to all members of the media. Head coach Todd Dodge and requested players will be available for interviews following a brief cooling off period. Postgame interviews at Fouts Field will be held in the media interview room below the east stands.

Mean Green Media LuncheonHead coach Todd Dodge will hold a weekly me-dia luncheon each Tuesday in the Team Meeting Room, on the first floor of the North Texas Ath-letic Center. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and Coach Dodge will speak at 12 noon.

Sun Belt TeleconferenceThe Sun Belt Conference will conduct a weekly teleconference with each of the eight head coaches each Monday throughout the season. Coach Dodge will be on the call from 11:08-11:14 a.m. each week.

Practice Coverage Media has limited access to North Texas football practice. Viewing is available outside the fence of the practice facility. Video and still photog-raphy can be shot during the first 30 minutes of practice. Players and coaches are available for interviews following practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. All requests for interviews must be made in advance through the athletic media relations office.

The92ndSeasonSettoBegin – North Texas will begin its 92nd season of football when it kicks off the 2007 season against Oklahoma in Norman Sept. 1. Since the inaugural season in 1913, North Texas has accumulated a record of 462-411-34 and has amassed 25 conference championships and played in seven bowl games.

DodgeBallBegins – Todd Dodge became the 16th head coach in North Texas football history when he was hired to lead the Mean Green on Dec. 12, 2006. Dodge is back for his second tour of duty at North Texas after serving as the Mean Green passing game coordinator in 1992 and 1993. Over the last five years as the head coach at Southlake Carroll High School, Dodge led his team to an amazing 79-1 record while winning four state championships. His only loss during that time was by a single point in the 2003 state championship game.

MakingtheRareJump– North Texas head coach Todd Dodge became just the sixth coach in history to make the rare jump from high school to major college head coach when he was announced as the new Mean Green boss on Dec. 12, 2006. Dodge joins Paul Brown of Ohio State, who came from Massillon, Ohio High School in 1941; Roy Lester of Maryland, who came from Montgomery High School in Rockville, Md. in 1969; Bob Commings of Iowa, who came from Massillon High School in 1974; Jerry Faust of Notre Dame, who came from Moeller High School in Cincinnati in 1981 and Dennis Parker who came to North Texas from Marshall (Texas) High School in 1991. Brown coached for three seasons at Ohio State and had a career record of 18-8-1. Lester was 7-25 in three years at Maryland, Commings was 17-38 in five years at Iowa, Faust was 30-26-1 in five years at Notre Dame and Parker was 11-21-1 during his three years at North Texas.

SeasonOpeners – North Texas is 36-52-3 all-time in season-opening games. The Mean Green has won just one season-opener in the last 10 years, a 14-7 win at Middle Tennessee in 2005. This will be the eighth time since 1998 that North Texas has opened up against a member of the Big XII Conference and the third time during that same time that it opened up against Oklahoma. This will be the fifth time in the last six years that North Texas has opened the season against a top 10 opponent.

DodgeAgainstOklahoma– North Texas head coach Todd Dodge was a member of the University of Texas football team from 1981-85 and was a part of some great games against Oklahoma in the “Red River Rivalry”. Of the five years that Dodge was in Austin, his Longhorns went 2-2-1 against the Sooners. Dodge was the starting quarterback in the 1984 game in which Texas was ranked No. 1 and Oklahoma was ranked No. 3 that ended in a 15-15 tie. In 1985, No. 2 Oklahoma defeated Texas 14-7 in a game that Dodge was intercepted twice, including once by All-American linebacker Brian Bosworth. This week’s game will be the first time that Dodge has ever been to Memorial Stadium in Norman.

GoingHome– North Texas has four players who will be returning to their home state for the game at Oklahoma Saturday. Senior Blake Burruss, who is expected to start for the Mean Green at defensive end, spent his prep days at Westmoore High School. Junior defensive back Dominique Green played at Lawton Eisenhower before coming to Denton. Sophomore defensive end Charlie Brown played at Hilldale High School in Muskogee and freshman Robbie Gordon is from Ardmore, Okla.

Top10Opponents– North Texas has played at least one top 10 opponent every year since 2000. This week’s match-up against No. 8 Oklahoma is actually the lowest-ranked top 10 opponent North Texas has faced during that time. In 2000 the Mean Green faced No. 4 Kansas State, followed by No. 3 Oklahoma in 2001; No. 2 Texas in 2002; No. 1 Oklahoma in 2003; No. 7 Texas in 2004; No. 7 LSU in 2005 and No. 2 Texas in 2006. FamiliarFaces – Several players from Oklahoma and North Texas will notice some familiar faces on the other sideline this week. Mean Green freshman wide receiver Breece Johnson was a favorite target of Oklahoma freshman quarterback Casey Russell last year at Colleyville Heritage High School. Sooner defensive end Alan Davis also played at Colleyville Heritage but was three years older than Johnson and Russell. Mean Green all-conference punter Truman Spencer was a teammate of Sooner defensive tackle Cordero Moore at Mesquite Horn High School. North Texas defensive back Dominique Green played his high school football alongside sooner defensive back D.J. Wolfe at Lawton (Okla.) Eisenhower. North Texas reserve defensive end Sam Owusu-Hemeng played at Arlington Seguin High School along with Oklahoma defensive back Jamell Flemming.

LettermanBreakdown– Of the 104 players on the current North Texas roster, 45 have earned at least one varsity letter while playing football for the Mean Green. Only 11 players have earned three letters and eight of those are expected to be starters this week against Oklahoma. There are 16 players who have earned two letters and 18 who have earned one letter. Of the 59 players who have not yet earned a varsity letter at North Texas, 16 are in the current two-deep this week for the Oklahoma game.

CoachesUp/CoachesDown – North Texas will put four assistant coaches in the press box during games and will have five assistants along with head coach Todd Dodge on the sideline. In the press box will be offensive coordinator Todd Ford, along with running backs coach Shelton Gandy, safeties coach Chuck Petersen and defensive ends coach David Rausch. On the sideline with Dodge will be defensive coordinator Ron Mendoza, defensive tackles coach Robert Drake, wide receivers coach Clayton George, cornerbacks coach Butch LaCroix and offensive line coach Spencer Leftwich. Graduate assistant coaches Beau Davidson and Scott Vestal will also be in the press box.

TelevisionTime – North Texas is scheduled to play on television five times in 2007, including the season-opener at Oklahoma which will be televised nationally by FOX Sports Net. The home-opener against Florida Atlantic will be televised back to the state of Florida as part of the Owls television deal on Sept. 22. The Mean Green will also play on ESPN Regional as part of the Sun Belt Conference television package in games against Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State. SizeWise–Senior defensive end Blake Burruss and freshman offensive lineman Jacob Kaiser are the tallest members of the Mean Green this year, standing at 6-7. Sophomore offensive lineman Ajani Banks is the heaviest North Texas player at 328 pounds. Backup running back Joshua Maldonado is the shortest player at 5-5 while cornerback Gary Oubre is the lightest at 160 pounds.

FourNamedPreseasonAll-Conference – North Texas placed four individuals on the Sun Belt preseason all-conference, which was more than every school in the league except Louisiana-Monroe and Middle Tennessee. Senior defensive end Jeremiah Chapman, senior linebacker Maurice Holman, junior punter Truman Spencer and senior safety Aaron Weathers all earned the prestigious preseason honor.

MeanGreenPickedSeventh – North Texas was picked to finish seventh in the preseason Sun Belt Conference poll which is voted on by league coaches and selected media. The Mean Green finished 2006 seventh in the standings with a 2-5 conference record.

WellRepresentedintheNFL – North Texas has had more players drafted to play professional football than any other team in the Sun Belt Conference. Since the first NFL draft in 1936, North Texas has had 77 players drafted, including seven players picked in the first round. Arkansas State is second among Sun Belt Schools which have had players drafted with 46. Joe Greene is the highest drafted player ever from North Texas when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the fourth overall pick in 1969. BuildingaWinningAttitude– Head Coach Todd Dodge has made it a mission to build his team with players who have experienced winning and been around winning programs. The 18 freshmen who make up Dodge’s first signing class have combined to play in a total of 11 state championship games in high school. Of those 11 state championship appearances, seven have won state titles. Wide receivers Sam Dibrell and Marcus King, linebacker Justin Padron, defensive end Kyle Russo and quarterback Giovanni Vizza all won at least one state championship in high school.

EnrollmentonRapidPace – The University of North Texas enrollment for the 2007 fall semester is 33,500, making it the fourth-largest university in the state of Texas. The enrollment has increased by an average of nearly five percent each year since 2000, when the enrollment was 26,493. North Texas is the fastest-growing university in Texas and at its current growth rate, would surpass the University of Houston by the year 2010. Along with Houston, only the University of Texas-Austin and Texas A&M University have more students than North Texas.

GenderEquityReportCard– The North Texas athletic department ranked second in the nation and received a grade of ‘A’ on the Gender Equity Scorecard - an annual report published Penn State University-York in an attempt to measure each school’s commitment to women’s athletics. The report ranked colleges in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision on opportunities available to women’s athletics, including scholarships, participation, coaching salaries, recruitment budget and operating expenses. The study incorporated 113 colleges which represent the 11 major football playing conferences. The Mean Green finished second only to the University of Nevada, which finished on top of the study for the second straight year. North Texas is one of only 11 schools in the country, and the only program in the south, to receive a grade of ‘A’ from the scorecard. North Texas was also recognized as the champion of the Sun Belt Conference in which no other schools received the ‘A’ grade.

AcademicAchievement – North Texas placed 12 football players on the 2006-07 Sun Belt Conference Commissioners list which recognizes student-athletes who maintain a grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0 for the academic year. Louisiana-Lafayette also had 12 members of its football team on the list while no other Sun Belt school had more than seven honorees. North Texas also had 21 additional football players on the 2006-07 Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll which recognizes student-athletes with a grade point average between 3.0 and 3.5.

MeanGreenandUnderArmour– The North Texas football team has entered an agreement with athletic apparel company Under Armour for the 2007 season. The team will be outfitted from head to toe with Under Armour, including shoes, socks, pants, jerseys, gloves and wrist bands. North Texas is one of only five college football programs to have such a deal to wear the popular performance gear, joining Auburn, Maryland, South Carolina and Texas Tech. PassingFancy – North Texas went all of the 2006 season without a quarterback recording 200 yards passing in a game. Matt Phillips was the last Mean Green signal caller to surpass the 200-yard mark on Nov. 29, 2005 in a 24-19 loss to Louisiana-Monroe. Daniel Meager, the Mean Green’s starting quarterback, has only thrown for more than 150 yards twice during his career.

ThomasEyeingRecord – Senior running back Jamario Thomas currently ranks third on the North Texas career rushing leaders list. Thomas has 2,830 yards in his three years and needs just 290 yards to move into second place. To break the record of 3,050 career yards, which is held by his former teammate Patrick Cobbs, Thomas will need 1,221 yards this season. In Todd Dodge’s wide open offense at Southlake Carroll, he had a 1,500-yard rusher in each of his last three years. FreshmanWideoutsAddDepth - North Texas head coach, Todd Dodge signed five wide receivers (Sam Dibrell, Evan Fentriss, Breece Johnson, Sam Roberson and Evan Walker) that recorded 1,000 yards or more in receiving during their senior year of high school. Brock Stickler is the only returning Mean Green receiver to have tallied over 1,000 yards receiving during senior year of high school.

MakingUpForLostOffense - The Mean Green returns 52.9 percent of its offense from the 2006 season. Senior running back Jamario Thomas leads all North Texas returnees with 700 yards of total offense last season. Thomas rushed for 668 yards and recorded 32 yards receiving out of the back field.

NewFacesintheKickingGame - For the third consecutive year, the Mean Green will have a new face at the kicker position. Three walk-on freshmen are vying for the starting spot for North Texas. Nick Bazaldua was the last Mean Green kicker to start as a true freshman during the 2002 season. As a fresman, Bazaldua was successful on 10-of-15 field goal attempts including four from more than 40 yards out.

FordOneofYoungest - North Texas offensive coordinator Todd Ford is the fourth-youngest offensive coordinator in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Div. I-A). Ford was born on March 28, 1973 making him 34 years old during the 2007 season. Only Major Applewhite (29) of Alabama, Brian Harsin (30) of Boise State and Mark Helfrich (33) of Colorado are younger in the OC ranks. Among both offensive and defensive coordinators, Ford ranks as the 10th-youngest in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

AReturntotheNorthTexasSideline - Mean Green head coach Todd Dodge is making his second tour of duty on the North Texas sideline after he was an assistant coach under Dennis Parker in 1992 and 1993. Dodge was the passing game coordinator under Parker, helping teach the most prolific passer in North Texas history Mitch Maher. During his two years as the passing game coordinator, Dodge’s offense totaled 4,806 passing yards for an average of 218.5 yards per game. Under his guidance in 1993, North Texas had 2,626 yards and 24 passing touchdowns, both of which have only been surpassed one time since then - and that was the year after Dodge left (1994). Maher, who holds North Texas passing records for career yards with 8,515, attributes much of his development to Dodge. North Texas has not had over 2,000 yards passing as a team since 1995, which was the first year the Mean Green returned to Div. I-A.

SlowStart – North Texas has been outscored 148-27 in the first quarter over the last two seasons. The Mean Green has scored first in nine of those 23 games. No other Sun Belt football program failed to score less than 29 total first quarter points last season alone.

FindingaNewHome– When Todd Dodge brought his spread offense to North Texas this year, one of the biggest challenges was finding a new home for the five tight ends that played a big part in the former offense. Four of the five found a home on the defensive side of the ball with Charlie Brown and Ryan Davenport moving to defensive end, Draylen Ross moving to defensive tackle and Bryant Seidle moving to linebacker. The only other holdover tight end was Victor Gill who has made the adjustment to offensive tackle and is in the two-deep this week.

Mean Green Defensive NotesDefensiveUnittoStriveFor – The last time that North Texas played Oklahoma, the Mean Green had one of the best defenses in school history. Seven of the 11 starters that year ended up as all-conference selections and four are currently playing professional football. Linebacker Cody Spencer and defensive end Adrian Awasom are both playing in the NFL and defensive backs Markeith Knowlton and Jeremy Pearl are both playing in the CFL. The 2003 defense allowed an average of just 104.7 yards rushing per game which is the best rushing defense since 1967 when the Mean Green allowed 79.1 yards rushing per game. Against Oklahoma in 2003 North Texas allowed 105 yards rushing which was well below the Sooners season average of 145.9 yards per game.

WealthofExperience – North Texas returns nine starters from its 2006 defense. Twelve of the top 13 tacklers, including the top eight tacklers, are back from last year. Defensive tackle Sky Pruitt and defensive back Roy Loren are the only two starters from 2006 who are not on the 2007 roster. Three of the four pre-season all-conference selections from North Texas are on the defensive side of the ball. North Texas has 19 defensive players on its current roster that have started at least one game while at North Texas. There are seven different defensive backs, seven linebackers and five defensive linemen who have at least one start. Nine of those players have started at least 10 games in their career, led by defensive end Jeremiah Chapman who has 24 career starts. There are five linebackers with at least 10 starts to their credit, led by Derek Mendoza and Maurice Holman who each have 22.

LookingforaThree-Peat – Aaron Weathers is looking to become the only Mean Green player in history to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. Weathers led the team with 113 tackles in 2005 and 78 last season. He becomes only the seventh player to led their team in consecutive seasons since North Texas starting keeping tackles as a stat in 1977. Of the seven total, Weathers is the only defensive back.

Off-seasonMovement – There has been several position changes defensively for North Texas leading up to the season opener. Junior Steve Warren has moved from safety to linebacker which was complimented by the move of junior Germaine Dawson from linebacker to safety. Sophomore Desmon Chatman moved from cornerback to safety and is very close to cracking the two-deep. Former tight-ends Charlie Brown, Ryan Davenport, Draylen Ross and Bryant Seidle all found homes on the defensive side of the ball. Brown and Davenport are playing defensive end while Ross is a defensive tackle and Seidle is a linebacker.

LackofInterceptions – No Mean Green player recorded more than one interception during the 2006 season. Six North Texas players recorded one interception a piece. The only other time that a North Texas player has failed to record multiple interceptions was in 1997 and 1984.

Backtothe4-3 – After spending a year running a 3-4 defense, North Texas has gone back to the traditional 4-3 under new defensive coordinator Ron Mendoza. The Mean Green struggled in the 3-4 alignment last year, allowing a Sun Belt Conference-high 40 touchdowns and ranking sixth in the league in total defense allowing an average of 338.4 yards per game.

‘Special’forTwoSeasons – The Mean Green special teams has gone 31 games without allowing a blocked punt. The last time North Texas had a punt blocked was against Baylor, Sept. 25, 2004. Junior punter Truman Spencer, has attempted 131 punts in his two-year career without giving up a blocked punt. 1996 was the last time a Mean Green team went a whole season without allowing a blocked punt.

BreakingtheDrought– It’s been 97 games and counting since North Texas has returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Broderick McGrew was the last Mean Green player when he took a kickoff and returned it 100 yards in a 28-27 loss against Utah State on Nov. 14, 1998.

(AP) -- The ninth-ranked Broncos completed a perfect season with an exhilarating 43-42 overtime victory over No. 7 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl Monday night, leaving Boise State and top-ranked Ohio State as the only teams with perfect records. In one of the most dramatic finishes in BCS history, the Sooners and the Broncos combined for 22 points in the final 86 seconds of regulation. Boise State blew an 18-point lead midway through the third quarter, then twice rallied from seven-point deficits. The Broncos appeared to be finished when Oklahoma cornerback Marcus Walker intercepted Jared Zabransky’s pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown to put the Sooners ahead 35-28 with 1:02 remaining. The magic came on a stunning 50-yard touchdown play on fourth-and-18 in the final seconds of regulation. Zabransky hit Drisan James at Oklahoma’s 35, and James pitched the ball to Jerard Rabb, who raced into the end zone with 7 seconds to play. After trading touchdowns, the Broncos decided to go for the victory. On the decisive play, Zabransky looked at three wide receivers to his right, then handed the ball behind his back to tailback Ian Johnson, who raced untouched into the end zone.Oklahoma’s Paul Thompson threw a career-high three interceptions. He completed 19 of 32 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

NORMAN, Okla. (8/30/03) – The North Texas football team suffered a 37-3 setback at the hands of the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners in front of a record crowd of 83,073 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. While North Texas played both Andrew Smith and Hall at quarterback, Hall was responsible for 71 of the Mean Green’s 79 yards passing. In his first collegiate game, Johnny Quinn led the North Texas receivers with two catches for 37 yards. Sophomore Roy Bishop led the Mean Green rushing attack with 53 yards on nine carries, while starter Patrick Cobbs gained 38 yards on the ground. While North Texas had trouble moving the ball against a tough Oklahoma defense, the Sooners were able to finish with 391 yards of total offense. OU forced two North Texas turnovers and its defense held the Mean Green to 154 total yards of offense.
