About OklahomaOU tOOk 13th COnSeCUtiVe nCaa tripOklahoma finished 21-13 overall in 2011-12 and ended its season with a 74-70 loss to St. John’s (N.Y.) in the second round of the NCAA Championship. It was OU’s 13th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, a record for a Big 12 team. OU was 11-7 in Big 12 play and finished second to 2012 national champions Baylor. Reserve center Jelena Cerina (3.9 points, 3.6 rebounds) was the lone graduate. Sherri Coale completed her 16th season passing a milestone 500th career victory as a head coach in both the high school and college ranks.

It was Hand’s second ACL tear. Hand suffered the injury in her right knee in the fifth game of her sophomore season and needed 401 days of recovery before playing in her next game.

Hand amassed 1,211 points, 555 rebounds, 296 assists, 51 blocks and 120 steals in her 104-game career. She ranks third all-time at Oklahoma in minutes played per game (32.5),19th in career scoring and fifth in 3-pointers made (164).

Eight on Active Rosterfamiliar SitUatiOn fOr SOOnerSThe season-ending injuries to four players leave the OU women’s basketball team with eight remaining on its active roster.

Unfortunately, it’s not uncharted territory for Oklahoma. The 2003 Sooners finished the season with nine players after ACL injuries occured to Erin Higgins and Caton Hill on the same day. That team went 19-13 before losing in the NCAA First Round.

The 2010 Sooners advanced to the Final Four after its roster was whittled to nine players beforing picking up walk-on Kodi Morrison between the winter and spring semesters.

hawaiian PunchSOOnerS Claim rainbOW Wahine titleOklahoma left Honolulu undefeated after capturing wins against Arkansas, Oregon and Hawaii in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown hosted by the University of Hawaii Nov. 23-25.

The all-tournament team included Sooners Morgan Hook, who averaged 14.0 points, and Aaryn Ellenberg, who had 13.3 points per game and 46 percent 3-point shooting.

Nicole Griffin scored a career-high 19 points as OU battled inside in its 73-70 win over Arkansas. The Sooners relied on 42 points in the paint as their perimeter shooting struggled.

Ellenberg (7-of-12 3FG) scored 27 points as Oklahoma made a school record 17 3-pointers and held the run-and-gun offense of Oregon to a season low in scoring in a 100-61 victory.

Hook scored 16 points as Oklahoma never trailed in its 74-49 win over host Hawaii in the tournament finale. OU pulled away in the second half with a 6 1/2 minute, 16-0 scoring run.

The 50 player watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012-2013 college basketball season.

The Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year presented by AT&T will be awarded on April 8, 2013, in New Orleans, La.

In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the top 30 players in the nation. In March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists.

Coale on Carter: “Gioya might be the sleeper of the class, but only for those who have never seen her play. She’s a strong, left-handed guard who can shoot the three and can also put the ball on the floor using her athleticism to get to the rim. Her gift, though, is delivering the basketball. She has tremendous court vision will really shine when she is surrounded by great shooters.”

Shaya kellogg6-2 | Forward | Ames, Iowa Ames High Schoolu 12.1 points, 8.0 reboundsu No. 26 F (ESPN HoopGurlz)u All-State Second Team

Coale on Kellogg: “Shaya is a strong, versatile player who really understands how to play basketball. She is aggressive and vocal and she’s incredibly passionate about the sport. She can score in a myriad of ways but what may make her special is her instinct on the offensive glass. She’s just a relentless competitor.”

Derica Wyatt5-10 | Guard | Nashville, Tenn.Franklin Road Academyu 18.5 points, 3.6 assists, 3.2 stealsu Three-Time All-State Tournamentu Miss Basketball

Coale on Wyatt: “Derica Wyatt is a kid that everybody calls a shooter, but what she really is is an unassuming scorer. She’s a better passer and creator than anybody gives her credit. And though her accuracy beyond the arc is what defenders have to take away, she can beat you in a variety of ways.”

Sooners Second in Big 12 Preseason PollCOaCheS tab OU amOng tOp teamSThe University of Oklahoma was picked second in the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll released Oct. 10.

OU and West Virginia tied for the runner-up spot behind Baylor in a vote of the league’s coaches. Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite for the third consecutive year. The Lady Bears received nine of 10 first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Kansas was picked fourth, Texas fifth and Iowa State sixth. Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and TCU, respectively, completed the poll.

The Sooners have finished the regular season at or better than the preseason prediction in six of the last seven seasons, including four straight years.

Sooners Score Perfect in APRFor the third straight season, OU women’s basketball recevied an NCAA Public Regonition Award. This honor is bestowed on teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. For the second straight year, based on the 2010-11 academic year, Sherri Coale’s Sooners had a perfect multiyear APR (1000).

Sooners Undefeated in Australian TourOklahOmag gOeS 4-0 DOWn UnDerIn August, the OU women’s basketball team completed its third quadrennial overseas tour, this year visiting Australia. Oklahoma began its trek with a whitewater rafting expedition through the rainforest in tropical North Queensland, searched for penguins south of Melbourne and climbed to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Taking advantage of an NCAA rule the permits teams to get a jump start on practices, the Sooners indoctrinated their newcomers with a visit to the Land Down Under. When they weren’t petting kangaroos, feeding crocodiles, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef or throwing boomerangs, the Sooners dominated on the basketball court.

OU went undefeated in its 10-day tour, taking a 4-0 record against a mix of all-star, college and professional teams.
