EDITOR’S NOTES

Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone's face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many

fruits, here in this world and the life to come. Henri Nouwen

out for you, too. Don’t be afraid to make that call to the PPPD if you see something that looks suspicious to you.

Please make note of the NEW NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER – 727-369-7864.Emergencies are always 911.

WELCOME ALL OUR NEWEST RESIDENTS

The Crystal Lake Home Owner’s Association wishes to welcome you to your new home. We trust you will enjoy your living experiences here as much as we do.

- Our speaker will be coming from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office. If you haven't registered to VOTE you will have an opportunity to register at that meeting. It would be great to have a good turnout for this meeting.

BINGO & SNACK BAR – SPONSORED BY YOUR HOA

People tell me all the time that this is one of the highlights of their week… it’s certainly one of mine.

We want you to bring your appetite to the clubhouse on Friday nights and plan to have dinner at the snack bar starting at 6:30 p.m. There’s always a good assortment of chips and sodas that are included with your burger or dog or buy them separately. It’s a great way to have dinner for $3.00 or less on a Friday night.

Then Bingo starts at 7p.m. with lots of fun and a great way to bring home some extra cash. If you haven’t played in a while, you’re in for a surprise. It just gets better and better all the time. If you haven’t played it before, don’t worry… we love helping you along. For many of us, there’s no better way to spend our Friday nights. We hope you’ll be there to join in the fun next Friday night.

TEXAS HOLD ‘EM

Every Saturday from 4pm – 9pm, guys & gals meet in the Clubhouse for Texas Hold ’em. The group started out small but continues to grow with new players joining in all the time. They want you to know that anyone is welcome and invite you to check ‘em out.

Be sure to be on time.

DO YOU LIKE TO BOWL?

Would you like to bowl on a team or just for fun? Bowling is fun, inexpensive and good exercise. You can socialize or compete with others. There’s a sign-up sheet in the Clubhouse for anyone wanting to get a team started. Let’s go bowling!

POLITICALLY SPEAKING

Have you Registered to VOTE? No matter what you might think, your vote does count. When I hear people say they don’t ever vote because it doesn’t make any difference anyway I’d like to tell you, It Does! You have to think about your children and your

grandchildren and the way the world is going to be left for them. http://2016election.procon.org/http://www.cnn.com/election This last one is my favorite one: Very interesting reading. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/However, you may decide to vote, please be educated. This is a very important year.

Education is your Weapon… Voting is your Power. You can request a Mail Ballot (the same as an Absentee Ballot) and take advantage of voting

home. Without leaving home. Then you can CHECK YOUR BALLOT STATUS ONLINE OR BY CALLING (727)464-8683. Contact the Board of Elections or go the Public Library and ask for the form.

If you aren’t registered, come to our October HOA meeting. Our speaker will be someone from the Board of Elections who will sign you up. Time is running out. Be prepared to VOTE!

YOU DECIDE – that’s your choiceEDUCATE – that your responsibility VOTE – that’s your power

QUOTES

• We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton• Instead of building walls, we should be building bridges. Vicente Fox• Positive anything is better than negative nothing. Elbert Hubbard

• You're going to go through tough times - that's life. But I say, 'Nothing happens to you, it happens for you.' See the positive in negative events. Joel Osteen

• Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some bright colors to the picture by including humor, and your picture begins to lighten up. Allen Klein

THE AMERICAN FLAG

The American flag is a symbol of freedom, liberty and human rights. It is a symbol of our home and all that we believe in.

The flag is one of the most visible and important symbols of our country, so we should treat it with respect. Here are some things you may or may not know:

The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.

The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun.

The American flag does not have to be lowered at sunset as long as it is properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or

merchandise. There's no rule saying that a flag that slips has to immediately be burned. The American flag is meant to be a flag; don’t use it for any other purpose. For example,

don’t use it as drapery, a ceiling decoration, or as a bed spread or a window covering. And never use it as a receptacle for carrying or holding anything.

The American flag should never be displayed with the union down (the blue rectangle with the stars), except when used as a signal of dire distress.

The American flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

The American flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored so that it might be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

The American flag should never have anything placed on it.The American flag should never be used for any advertising purpose, nor embroidered on

cushions or handkerchiefs, printed on paper napkins or boxes, nor used as any portion of a costume.

When the flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning

THINK ---- Before you speak! (Be swift to hear and slow to speak.) To think: to believe something or have an opinion to ponder, give consideration to or have

some extent of reasoning. T – Tell only the truth (maybe say nothing at all if it doesn’t benefit anyone)H – Helpful in any way to anyone (good news is always welcomed)I – Is it of importance to be told (maybe it is only gossip)N – Necessary to be told (maybe to one who would make a difference in a situation) K – Kindness is a considered in the telling. (will it be of benefit to the listener?)Let your words be few… unless they are words of praise.

RECIPES

TUNA PATTIESMakes 6-8 patties Ingredients• 2 (5-6 oz.) cans of tuna in water• 1 egg• ½ cup bread crumbsDirectionsMix all ingredients. Use more or less breadcrumbs as needed to soak the moisture from the tuna and egg until

it’s the consistency of a ‘patty’.Sprinkle both sides with pepper and gently pat it to make it adhere to the patty. Place the patties in the warm oil/butter and fry until lightly browned.Flip and cook the other side.

Copycat Pioneer Woman Chicken SpaghettiServes: 8Ingredients• 1 1/2 pounds of chicken (breasts, thighs or a combination of both)• 8 oz. spaghetti, broken into 3-inch pieces• 3 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese, divided• 2 cans cream of mushroom soup• 1/4 cup diced onion• 1/4 cup finely diced green bell pepper• 1/4 cup canned pimento, drained (one 4-ounce jar)• 1/8 teaspoon smoked paprikaInstructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 3-quart bake dish with cooking spray.2. In a 4-quart saucepan, place the chicken and cover with 4 cups water. Over medium

high heat, bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer 20 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Remove chicken from the pan but leave the liquid in the pan.

3. Return pan to high heat and bring to a boil, add pasta and cook 10 minutes until spaghetti is al dente. Drain and reserve the liquid.

4. While pasta cooks, shred cooked chicken and measure out 2 cups meat; discard any skin and bones.

5. In a large bowl, combine the chicken, drained pasta and 2 cups of the cheese, then stir in the soup, onion, bell pepper, pimento and paprika. Add 1 cup of the reserved cooking broth.

Check medical bills with care

Dealing with health insurance claims can be frustrating and time-consuming. Multiple bills from different departments for what seems like one medical procedure can baffl e even the most organized consumer. The key is to keep track of insurance claims and

keep detailed records. Follow this advice:

• Review records. Verify that the medical provider has the correct billing information. Also, check the identifi cation or group number of your insurance plan on claim forms.

• Follow up to be sure the claim is being processed. Contact the provider or insurer after receiving a bill to confi rm receipt. Write down the names of everyone you speak to, not-ing the date of the call and any available confi rmation numbers.

• Verify all the expenses. Check to see if you are being billed twice. Similarly, verify that the contracted rate between the insurer and the provider is actually what you are being billed for.

Revamp your finances to save more money

If you can fi gure out how to save just $125 per month, then set up an automatic savings to a mutual fund that yields an average of 7 percent, in fi ve years you will have almost $9,000. In 20 years, that amount will have grown to $65,000! Here are four suggestions

for coming up with that $125 per month:

• Look at your cable TV bill. Do you need all those channels? You can roll your bill back by getting rid of premium channels or subscribing to a smaller, cheaper package.

• Stop picking up magazines from the supermarket or newsstand. Save yourself some money by reading online or subscribing to your favorite magazine instead. And if you’re subscribing to anything you don’t read, cancel it.

• Change your cell service. Shopping around can get you a bet-ter deal that will save you bucks. Just make sure you won’t be penalized for breaking a contract early.

• Call your credit card company. You may be able to get a lower interest rate just by ask-ing.

Some challenges spur imagination and success

Imagination performs best when it’s challenged. Perfect freedom leaves the imagination listless, and whatever is created is lifeless as well. Only when a challenge presents itself does the imagination perk up. How can the problem be solved? What other paths could

you follow?

Take for example, American writer Flannery O’Connor. She was stricken with lupus erythematosus in her mid-20s. She spent almost all of her life (she died at age 39) on her family’s farm. But as the disease made movement more and more diffi cult, it also pushed her to sit at her typewriter every day and write. The stories she churned out are full of wild imaginings and a great spirit of hope.

Just listen

A man whose marriage was in trouble sought advice from his minister. The minister heard the man out and then said, “You must learn to listen to your wife.”

The man took this advice to heart, but he returned a month later to say the marriage was still unhappy, even though he had learned to listen to every word his wife said.

The minister said with a smile, “Now go home, and listen to every word she isn’t saying.”

Learn to let go

A little boy was playing one day with a very valuable vase. When he put his hand inside it and couldn’t draw it back out, he called for his mother. His mother tried gently to slide his hand free, but it remained stuck.

She was ready to break the vase when she said, “OK, let’s try one more time, Open your hand and hold your fi ngers out out straight, and then pull.”

“Oh, no, mommy!” the boy cried. “If I do that, I’ll drop my penny!”

Storytellers have as profound a purpose as any who are charged to guide and transform human lives.

Did you know that October is also...Italian-American Heritage Month. The goal of Italian-American Heri-

tage Month is to inform the public about the contributions made by Italians and Italian-Americans, especially in the arts, the humanities, and the sci-ences, and to celebrate the impact that Italian culture and language have had on the United States.

Try these tips for better napping

Sleep is important to your health, and regular naps can make a positive difference. One Harvard study found that people who nap at least three times a week for a half hour or more have a much lower risk of heart disease. Other studies suggest that a

40-minute nap can improve performance on the job.

So what’s the best way to nap? The Science of Us website summarized the fi ndings of different studies. First, try to sleep for at least an hour to get a deeper sleep, even though shorter naps have positive benefi ts as well. Second, lie down for your nap; you’ll wake up feeling more alert than if you sleep sit-ting up in a chair.

Finally, nap in the morning if possible. You’re more likely to get REM sleep because your brain still craves it from the night before. Although, on the other hand, afternoon naps tend to be more restorative and improve memory.

Chest pain? Worry—but don’t panic

You’re having chest pains. Should you rush to the hospital? Although you shouldn’t ig-nore the pains, don’t panic. According to an article on the Medline Plus website, fewer than 6 percent of chest pains are symptoms of a heart attack. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that doctors usually can’t determine the cause of chest pains, and they can be evidence of a serious illness.

Researchers studied a database containing records of emergency room visits, looking at 11,000 cases of chest pain unrelated to other trauma. They found that only 5.5 percent of pa-tients suffered from life-threatening ailments. The most common diagnosis was simply “non-specifi c chest pain,” accounting for more than fi ve in 10 patients complaining of discomfort.

Chest pains cause more than 8 million trips to emergency rooms each year, second only to abdominal pains.

Heart health improving for Americans

Americans are taking better care of their hearts, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the rate of heart disease in Americans over 40 dropped to 8 per-

cent in 2011-12, down from 10 percent in 2001-02. Among Americans 60 and older, the rate dropped from 19.5 percent to 15 percent in the same time frames. The researchers found no signifi cant change either way in Americans 40-59 years old, however.

One factor infl uencing the improvement was having access to health insurance, according to the study. Better management of risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, smok-ing, weight, and diabetes probably contributed to the decline, the report suggested.

Gas giant found orbiting two stars could host life

A Jupiter-size planet in the habitable zone of two suns may have moons capable of sup-porting life, scientists say. Kepler-1647b is 3,700 light-years from Earth, and its two parent stars are about the size and age of our sun. It’s a gas giant without a solid sur-

face, the largest planet discovered in a two-star system, and it orbits the stars in 1,107 days.

As the MSN website reports, almost half of all sun-like stars discovered exist in binary systems. Most of their planets are closer to the size of Saturn and circle relatively closer to their parent stars, not in the zone where liquid water could exist. The discovery of

Kepler-1647b by the Kepler space telescope suggests that other such Tatooine-like worlds (after Luke Skywalker’s home in the Star Wars movies) could be waiting elsewhere in the universe.

Volcanoes on Mars? Maybe

The Curiosity rover has made an unexpected discovery on Mars that’s making scien-tists re-examine what they know about the history of the red planet.

As reported on the ScienceDaily website, Curiosity drilled into a rock at a location on the Martian landscape known as “Buckskin,” collecting powder that was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Scientists identifi ed the powder as tridymite, a silicate mineral.

What’s surprising? Tridymite is associated with volcanism—which wasn’t thought to be a feature of Mars. The discovery has scientists wondering wheth-er active volcanoes were at one time present on Mars despite its lower temperature. Mars, it seems, is still full of surprises.

Science is not about control. It is about cultivating a perpetual condition of wonder in the face of something that forever grows one step richer and subtler than our latest theory about it. It is about reverence, not mastery.

Skin cancer risk—your feet

You probably know to check the areas of your skin that get the most exposure to sunlight for symptoms of melanoma, but don’t neglect the rest of your body. The WebMD website re-

ports that skin cancer can develop on the soles of people’s feet, partic-ularly the spots that get the most stress from walking or running. Those areas include the ball of the foot, the side of the arch, and particularly the heel.

Melanoma on the sole of the foot is rare, accounting for just 2.4 cases per million for Caucasian Americans and 2.2 per million among African-Americans. However, because most of us don’t think to check our feet for signs of cancer, it’s often very advanced when discovered. So don’t forget your feet when examining your skin.

Sea sponge could hold key to fighting deadly infections

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a bacterial infection that kills an average of 11,000 patients every year in the United States. But scientists now believe they’ve discovered an Antarctic sea sponge that produces a chemical com-

pound capable of stopping it.

According to the UPI website, researchers studying the defense mechanisms of sea spong-es—as well as algae and underwater invertebrate organisms—found the compound, named darwinolide, in Dendrilla membranosa. It works by penetrating MRSA’s protective biofi lm, a coating of proteins, carbohydrates, and DNA that current antibiotics can’t get through.

Harvesting the sponges from the sea fl oor is neither practical nor environmentally sound, so the scientists are looking for a way to produce the compound synthetically. Fortunately, UPI states, most chemical compounds found in nature can be reproduced in the lab by chem-ists.

Poison found on ancient arrowheads

Primitive humans may have hunted prey with poison-tipped arrows at least 13,000 years ago, according to an article on the Sci-News website. Archeologists in eastern Africa uncovered several artifacts made from bone in the Kuumbi Cave—implements that

included fi ve slender projectile points. The cave also held traces of ancient charcoal from the Mkunazi plant, which has poisonous fruit.

Ancient humans probably used poison-tipped arrows of bone because stone-tipped arrows and spears didn’t have the stopping power to take down large prey like zebras or buffalo.

Get your imagination going when you paint

You don’t have to be a Picasso to fi nd satisfaction and enjoyment in creating art. When you’re searching for ideas or subjects to paint, consider these approaches:

• Seek inspiration. Spend some looking at art—paintings, sculpture, drawings. Listen to music to stimulate your creative juices.

• Start small. If you’re hesitant, or blocked, don’t tackle a big art project. Start with something small and easy. Work on one section of a painting you’re planning, and don’t think of the rest of the project. You’ll accomplish something concrete, and your success may give you the momentum you need to continue.

• Switch things around. If you usually paint or draw horizontally, switch to vertical. Instead of painting what you see, paint what you feel. If you draw with your right hand, try switching to your left. A small change can make a big difference.

• Try an exercise. Pick a common saying: “Once in a blue moon,” for instance. Draw or paint what the saying means to you. What kind of rare occurrence springs to your mind? How would the world look under blue moonlight? Choose other clichés and catchphrases to illustrate, and you’ll keep your perceptions sharper.

Fear criticism? Do it anyway

The cliché that you can’t please everyone is a simple lesson on dealing with criticism. You’ll always have detractors, so you may as well follow your heart and do what’s right.

That’s what Julia Butterfl y Hill learned. Hill made headlines a couple of years ago when she climbed into a California redwood and lived there for two years to protest logging in the ancient woods. After she came down, she wrote a book about her experience, The Legacy of Luna (Luna is the name she gave to her tree home).

Then came publicity—and criticism from loggers whose livelihood she was curtailing and environmentalists who accused her of selling out.

“For every action, there’s an equal and opposite criticism,” Hill said. So do it anyway.
