BeddingtonBook Club

Normally, we meet between 7:00 and 9:00 pm on the third Tuesday of each month in the Boardroom at the Beddington Theatre Arts Centre.

Note: Due to COVID-19, while we are physical distancing, we will likely hold our book club meetings on Google Meet or Facebook.

Our July 21 book will be The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.

“Don Tillman, professor of genetics, has never been on a second date. He is a man who can count all his friends on the fingers of one hand, whose lifelong difficulty with social rituals has convinced him that he is simply not wired for romance. So, when an acquaintance informs him that he would make a “wonderful” husband, his first reaction is shock. Yet he must concede to the statistical probability that there is someone for everyone, and he embarks upon The Wife Project. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which he approaches all things, Don sets out to find the perfect partner. She will be punctual and logical—most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver.

Yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also beguiling, fiery, intel-ligent—and on a quest of her own. She is looking for her biological father, a search that a certain DNA expert might be able to help her with. Don’s Wife Project takes a back burner to the Father Project and an unlikely relationship blooms, forcing the scientifically-minded ge-neticist to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that love is not always what looks good on paper.” – from Goodreads.com.

Our August 18 book will be The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

We hope that you and your families are staying safe and healthy. Although we await the day when we can all gather together again, we hope you are able to stay connected in meaningful ways with friends and loved ones.

The Board and childcare staff continue to navigate new waters with our Before and After School program and Summer Camps and will be sending out updates as they become available. Our Reimagine Beddington Commit-tee continues its efforts on projects to enhance our parks and open spaces. Watch for new planters coming to our community, as well as naturalization and pollina-tion projects that you can get involved with.

Although in-person community events like our an-nual Neighbour Day BBQ have been cancelled, we are always looking at ideas to bring the community to-gether and welcome fresh ideas on keeping the com-munity engaged and supported. Please email bhca@ beddingtoncommunity.ca with any inspiring stories and ideas to enhance the Beddington community.

If you or anyone you know needs support, please reach out to 211 or the Distress Centre’s 24-Hour Crisis Line at 403-266-HELP (4357).

Stay well!

Important Playground Build Update Information The Bermuda Drive Educational Teamwork Founda-tion unfortunately has to report that we have had to postpone our build date of our playground due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With restrictions being placed on how many people can safely get together, and maintain the 6 feet of social distancing, it places restrictions on us completing our playground build. We are hoping to build the playground the weekend of September 18, 19, and 20, 2020, but that will also be dependent on the COVID-19 situation.

Cancelled Fundraisers With the rising concerns, and restrictions put in place due to COVID-19, we have had to cancel our raffle for 2 WestJet tickets, as well as our Bottle Drive. We still are holding the tentative build dates of September 18, 19, and 20, 2020; however, we will be closely monitoring the Pandemic to see if we can continue with our build.

Volunteers NeededWe will need 20+ volunteers per day, for 3 days (Septem-ber 18 to 20). Any adult can volunteer, and we need vol-unteers! Volunteer roles range from the following roles: basic construction, lifting and moving pieces, manning food and beverage tables, sorting, serving food, etc.

Volunteer responsibilities and time slots are posted on a Sign-up Genius https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080a4caeaa2da0fc1-help and will be posted on our Facebook page and St. Bede Media Streams.

Dave Mulders (introduced in last month’s Banner as an apiarist in Beddington) is also involved in this exciting project coordinated through the David Suzuki Foundation of Canada. A “butterfly way” is a series of twelve pollinator-friendly patches in a geographic area such as a commu-nity or park. Currently there are nine official butterfly ways in Canada, but none in Alberta. Beddington has plans already underway to add more natural plants for polli-nators. Could Beddington be the site of the first official But-terfly Way in Alberta?

Below is more information from Dave. You will understand why the Reimagine Beddington Committee is intrigued!

Why is this important? Pollinators are one of nature’s most important groups. Studies have shown that a third of the food we consume requires the efforts of pollina-tors. Since 1974, our insect populations on earth have fallen by a whopping 45%! Some of the more noticeable changes include the monarch butterfly, which we used to see all over the place. Surveys in 2013 showed that the monarch butterfly population had fallen by 95%.

There are three major contributing factors to these de-clines: the loss of habitat, the use of herbicides and pes-ticides, and the change in climate and advent of severe weather such as forest fires and floods.

What can we do? With over 800+ species of bees and 300+ species of butterflies in Canada, the greatest thing we could do as a community would be to create pollinator-friendly spaces, even small ones, which then connect to other pollinator-friendly spaces.

Three questions to ponder:•If Beddington was a National Park, how would it be dif-

ferent?•What are barriers for pollinators in our area?•What would be the risk of taking small steps now ver-

sus not acting at all?

For more information, check online:

https://davidsuzuki.org/take-action/act-locally/ butterflyway/

The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Ernő Rubik. Once created, it took Rubik roughly one month to solve the cube. Today, the record for solving the puzzle is held by Du Yusheng, and is 3.47 seconds.

When going to see a movie at the theatre, many people schedule their arrival based on their estimate of the time dedicated to trailers. This wouldn’t have worked in the early 1900s when trailers were first introduced. As the name would suggest, ‘trailers’ initially followed the film, but were later changed as this timing was quite ineffective.

City of Calgary: Residential Boulevard GardensGreen Thumb? Can’t Garden Enough? Don’t Have Your Own Garden?

“Residential boulevard gardens add character to neigh-borhoods, beautify streets, and support environmental benefits such as increasing ecological diversity, provid-ing butterfly, bee and bird habitats. Gardening in the residential boulevard increases community and social cohesion and contributes to healthy active living…” (City of Calgary website, below)

Boulevards are part of The City’s property, so everyone who’s tempted to try their hand at a boulevard garden must adhere to City guidelines and bylaws. Before start-ing any project, review carefully The City of Calgary web-site article “Residential Boulevard Gardens Guidelines.”

For the Birds: Beddington’s Bird HavenLast year, my dog Rosy and I detoured off Berkley Drive along a pathway that nicely links “Beddington Area 4 Off Leash Dog Park” to “Beddington Area 3 Off Leash Dog Park.” (Thanks to Google Maps, I learned these catchy park names!) Almost immediately, I was charmed by the sight of folk-art birdhouses and feeders that I could see above a rather tall fence.

This year, I decided to interview the creator of this magic space in Beddington, especially as spring is arriving (i.e. 10 C, ominously grey skies and only the most intrepid buds revealing a hint of green.) As I walked around to meet Graham (Mac) McIvor, I heard lots of birdsong and chirping…definitely more than in my own yard. I was jealous already!

What a sight for winter-weary eyes; in the trees or along walls, dozens of birdhouses and feeders. In addition, the yard’s many pots and beds are ready for planting! Mac has been building bird houses for the love of it for about 25 years now. He often uses old fence boards, barn boards, and tree bark. He started with formal designs but found out that birds are not fancy – they prefer more basic homes! That doesn’t mean the ‘Hood lacks variety: I saw single-family dwellings, townhouses, and apartments – even a grain elevator. Some are painted different colours, some are natural. Birds even renovate them: Check out the flicker house, which got a front door reno. Mac and his wife share their yard with spar-rows, chickadees, robins, flickers, cedar waxwings and nuthatches…and many a human visitor. On my way

First, I want to recognize those that have been, and continue to be, on the frontlines during this pandemic, including healthcare professionals, first responders, truckers, grocery store employees, and all essential workers. Thank you for serving our community.

During this time of uncertainty, keeping my office avail-able to provide individual help is one of my top priori-ties. Many constituents have contacted my office with a variety of individual queries, from accessing govern-ment programs to helping loved ones stranded abroad. In the last several weeks, my office has assisted with nearly two hundred individual complex cases.

Since the onset of this pandemic, I have been working closely with, business leaders, civil society representa-tives, leaders from the faith community, and cultural community groups to better understand the precise challenges our community is facing. Last month I held a virtual town hall and a virtual roundtable for small busi-ness owners, to ensure I am hearing directly from you. Many of you write or call into my office on a daily basis with your feedback and concerns. I have been directly using this feedback as I am writing policy, appearing on national media, writing press releases, getting changes to, and advocating for, emergency support programs.

I have also been addressing all of the questions from community members on my website, where I have col-lated resources from all levels of government, posted all my press releases, provided step-by-step tutorials on applying for financial support, and post the answers to your questions that I have received from the govern-ment. My website is updated regularly with new infor-mation from government press briefings. If you want to find details about the work my office and I are doing, please visit www.MPRempel.ca.

During this time, it is important our community comes together and does our part to slow the spread. If you have any feedback on how I can better serve our com-munity at this time, please contact me at michelle. [email protected].

News from the Friends of Nose Hill

by Anne Burke

The City maintains 984 kilometers of regional pathways and 96 kilometers of trails. In the late 1960s, Calgarians thought of a system of connected pathways to enjoy the visual amenities and access areas of unique natural beauty. The first completed section of a pathway was in the early 1970s. Nose Hill Park has both pathways (to protect the vegetation) and trails. Please use both wisely.

•A regional pathway is part of the city-wide network and is usually paved with asphalt.

•A local pathway provides routes in communities, link-ing residential areas to neighbourhood parks, schools and other community destinations.

•Trails are unpaved paths usually made of grainy or compacted dirt.

Work on pathways deals with missing links, lifecycle repairs, and safety improvements. The City will update existing (and build new) pathways and bikeways. Path-ways are off-street and bikeways are on-street. The 2001 Calgary Pathway and Bikeway Plan is being updated, since many proposals in the original plan were built, while others are obsolete, due to changes in roads and development. The needs of users and City policies have changed over time. The aims are to separate people by speed, improve visibility, and make routes more reliable, easier to use, and accessible.

The vision is to help us walk, run, ride, and use mobility devices, whether for social, recreational or commercial activities, to connect with public transit and parking. City Council approved guiding principles for the “5A” network for walking and wheeling infrastructure. For now, City staff will work with approved capital budgets. Future capital investment and more budget requests will be needed to build out the network over time.

For next steps, go to: https://engage.calgary.ca/pathwaybikeway.

MLA Calgary – Beddington Hon. Josephine Pon#106 – 8220 Centre Street NE Calgary, AB T3K 1J7

403-215-7710 [email protected]

Hello, my constituents!

As we begin the month of May, I would like to ensure all of you receive the most updated information regarding our government’s plan to re-open Alberta’s economy.

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to the essen-tial businesses in our community that have stayed open and the many nonprofit and community organizations who have supported the less vulnerable and those re-quiring assistance with the social, economic and health impacts created by COVID-19.

Huntington Hills Community Association is offering assistance to constituents who are seniors, immu-no-compromised, or quarantined, and are unable to buy groceries, collect prescriptions, or other ne-cessities during this time. My friend Rick Lundy and his team at HHCA can arrange to have items de-livered to you. Please contact Rick at rick.lundy@ huntingtonhillscalgary.com for assistance.

The Salvation Army – Berkshire Citadel prepares Good Food Boxes at low cost. Their amazing team of volun-teers assemble and deliver affordable, nutritious food to the church for our residents. Check out their Facebook page to see the options available and to place your or-der. Please also consider donating non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, and plastic grocery bags for their hampers!

Seniore’s Pizza in Beddington is a regular favourite in our constituency! Even Calgarians all across the city visit our riding to enjoy their delicious pizza.

Brixton Pub & Eatery in MacEwan has re-organized to continue serving you during these unprecedented times. Congratulations!

Jerusalem Shawarma in Country Hills assembled and generously donated over 100 meals for Calgarians in need. The students at Zero Waste YYC delivered the meals across the city to those unable to obtain basic ne-cessities. Thank you for your incredible generosity and community service!

Alberta’s Re-Launch Strategy was developed on the advice of public health officials, for careful and gradual lifting of the restrictions imposed on our economy, and our lives. Together, Albertans’ efforts in adhering to pub-lic health guidelines have succeeded in containing the spread of the virus far below the scale of outbreak in many other places.

The full relaunch strategy will allow for the gradual, staged reopening of businesses, services and recre-ational opportunities, under health guidelines. Several safeguards will be in place to keep us protected, includ-ing increased testing capacity, comprehensive contact tracing, support for those who test positive, stronger border controls and airport screening, rules and guid-ance for the use of masks, and strong protections for the most vulnerable.

We will continue to practice personal distancing and hygiene habits that we have all adapted to over the last two months. To move on to further stages of the relaunch strategy, we must take further steps including: •Enhance our nation-leading testing capabilities•Robust and comprehensive contact tracing to notify

people who may have been exposed•Use masks in areas that do not allow for social distanc-

ing such as mass transit

For more information, please visit alberta.ca.

I am so honoured to work for you every day as your MLA! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office if you require assistance.

Long wedding veils have been a trend for many years; how-ever, the length of these veils often

The tax payment deadline for 2020 property tax has been extended from June 30 to September 30 without a 7% late payment penalty, providing flexibility during these difficult times. A penalty of 7% will be added to any unpaid balance on October 1.

Budget Wisely, Join TIPP Filing Fee-Free

The Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP) filing fee has been suspended for 2020. Join TIPP to make budgeting easier or cancel TIPP to increase your immediate cash flow.

Weekly Green Cart Pickup is Back!Weekly green cart pickup will resume the week of May 19. Your green cart will continue to be picked up on the same day on a weekly basis. There is no change to your collection days.

You can see your updated scheduled online at calgary.ca/collection. Make sure to sign up for free reminders or download the Calgary Garbage Day app so you receive the latest service updates and tips.

Your green cart pickup will remain at once every two weeks in the interim. Staffing challenges due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the postponement of the start of weekly green cart service. Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain blue, black, and green cart ser-vices for Calgarians.
