passes a number of attractive villages and scenic countryside as well as many

places of historic interest connected with Bunyan.

The Trail was created by the Bedfordshire Group to celebrate

the Diamond Jubilee of the RA.

We will walk the route in six legs of 12/13 miles each.

The dates for the legs are the Sundays : May 15th, June 12th,

July 10th , August 7th, September 11th and October 16th .

Roger on 020 8989 5116.

Booking slips will appear in the next programme

Sharpenhoe Clappers from Harlington

The price of coach trips - As many members will know, in

2009 we reduced the price of our coach trips. This proved

successful and we still managed to cover our costs but this year

has not been so good and therefore, reluctantly, we will have to

increase our prices for next year.

The booking in advance price will now be £12.50 and the ‗on

the day‘ price will be £14. We are not seeking to make a profit

– only break even, so if the numbers increase we may be able

to reduce prices later in the year.

The Result of our Caption Competition !

Not many people know that there are

eight white horses carved into the hills

of Wiltshire.

I’m probably wrong about that but all those lucky enough

to have been on the White Horse Trail will have seen them

all! One of them, the Westbury Horse, is concreted over

and painted white to save on maintenance costs. I didn’t

know that either!

This was a very enjoyable holiday not just because it

never rained but for the great variety of countryside we

encountered. The ridge walks rewarded us with

spectacular panoramic views of Wiltshire and, from this

height, it was easy to see evidence of early settlements and

their defences. We were in Stonehenge territory after all!

We crisscrossed wheat and barley fields, climbed over

countless stiles, had conversations with many a herd of

curious cattle and, of course, showed our appreciation at

every pub we visited.

We were there at the time of the year when crop circles

were making their presence known. Yes, some of the

group actually visited a crop circle, which was just a few

hours old, en route from their visit to the Millennium

Horse at Devizes. Afterwards, it was difficult to separate

between those who had been entranced by the mystic

energy of the circles and those who were still under the

influence of the Wadworth Brewery Tour at Devizes.

The Kennet and Avon Canal treated us to many miles of

pleasant towpath walking. A real spectacle was the flight

of twenty nine locks at Caen Hill just west of Devizes.

On another day we did a marathon walk, undeterred by

the Army on manoeuvres, firing rockets and shells which

were exploding very close to us but fortunately on target!

Salisbury Youth Hostel, which is conveniently located

about 10 mins walk from the city centre, looked after us

very well. Salisbury is a wonderful old city, similar in

many respects to York which we visited last year.

To allow us time to visit the Cathedral, Friday’s walk was

shortened but added on to the next day’s walk. One

would expect nothing less from Roger! This magnificent

Cathedral was built on land with the water table just four

feet below! (www.salisburycathedral.org.uk)

Each day started with a coach journey of about an hour to

the start of the walk. Spirits were always high in

anticipation of another great day’s walking and no chance

of rain (although I’m sure everyone had a waterproof

hidden away somewhere!).

Wiltshire has more than its fair share of thatched cottages

and hollyhocks. It was a treat to be driven through

attractive villages and enjoy fabulous views of the rolling

countryside.

One village experienced our presence more than others.

Due to a slight mishap, the coach door would not close.

After knocking on a few doors in the village we managed

to borrow a socket set and the door was eventually fixed.

Whilst this was going on, a police helicopter was buzzing

overhead – I think we managed to give the impression

that it had nothing to do with us!

Appropriately, the week ended at the White Horse Pub in

Salisbury. One of two Wadworth’s pubs in the City, this

one was closing down that very weekend. The landlord

promised us drinks at a price that would even make

Wetherspoon’s look expensive! It was great credit to the

group that everyone turned up to celebrate a very

successful and enjoyable week. Our thanks go to Roger for

organising and leading another great walking holiday, to

Colin and Graham who were back markers and to our

ever reliable coach driver, Del.

Richard Roberts

The White Horse Trail

24 – 31 July 2010

The caption most popular with the judges was -

“It is lonely in front of the leader.............” (submitted by Martin Howells who wins a free coach trip of his choice)

The judges also liked, among others -

"―I only said to the leader ―Can’t you walk a bit faster‖ "

―Is the backmarker taking his job too seriously ?‖

―They said the pub is at the end ?‖

And the editor chuckled at ―The 1st leg of the Blancmange and Custard Way‖

On 30th August 20 members set off in 5

cars for a week in Shropshire and arrived

safely at Wilderhope Manor, a stately home

maintained by the National Trust as a

Youth Hostel. What a beautiful place to

start - there are 2 spiral staircases and large dormitories and

very good food.

Our first day took us via Church Stretton, the Jack Mytton

Way (no one seems to know who he was), the Shropshire

Way, Wild Moor to Bridges, a much smaller hostel,

privately owned, where we were made very welcome.

Day 2 was Virginia’s day— a circular walk up to the Long

Mynd, where she had laid on a ‘fly pass’ of gliders fo us !

We spent our coffee break watching gliders doing circuits

and bumps on a lovely morning. We continued along the

Long Mynd, across a golf course and into Little Stretton for

lunch and returned to Bridges via Ashes Hollow and

Boiling Well Spring.

On Day 3 we returned to Wilderhope Manor by a

different route but lunching again in Church Stretton. The

choice of "tea and cake" shops was excellent as was the pub.

As the nearest pub to Wilderhope was at least 1½ miles

away most of us spent the evening playing ‚99‛ and ‚Them

& Us‛. ‚Them‛ won this because of the way the cards fell in

their favour !!

The next day we donned full packs again to move on to

Coalport in the Ironbridge Gorge. The route led through

Much Wenlock for lunch and followed the Shropshire Way.

Coalport Hostel was again very different from the others - a

new hostel in a factory converted with Lottery Money and

opened in 1997 - a very good job but a few more hooks and

places to put things down would have helped.

Saturday started with a walk into Ironbridge along the

gorge beside the River Severn. We had tried to visit

Ironbridge on Bank Holiday Monday, a mistake as it was

packed solid, but it was much quieter now. We went on

through pleasant countryside to Little Wenlock and back

to Coalport via a long descent back down to the gorge.

On our last day we returned once again to Wilderhope

Manor after crossing the Severn, following footpaths

through to Much Wenlock (where we had our only rain all

week) and along the Shropshire Way.

Huge thanks are due to Roger who had worked out all

these complicated routes, not helped by blocked stiles and

no way– markers on paths other then the designated

routes, ordered the excellent weather, and to Virginia for

her first go at leading on an unknown area.

We all had a most enjoyable week and are looking

forward to next year’s trip.

A Navigation Course.

Early in 2010 we offered to pay part of the fees of any leaders wishing to attend

a course in Wales and Virginia Angmar and George Arabanos took advantage

of this opportunity - here’s what they wrote to us afterwards -

Foot Note

I recently returned from five days walking in the Cairngorm National Park in Northern Scotland. For those unfamiliar with

this area of the UK, it lays claim to being the highest, coldest and snowiest plateau in the British Isles and home to five of the six highest mountains in Scotland including Ben Macdui at 1309m. Being an inexperienced walker, with my only recent ventures limited to weekend walks in Dartmoor and the Peak district, I decided to employ the services of Andy. An experienced mountain guide; together with his wife Rebecca he also runs a guest house in Boat of Garten, 12 miles north east of Aviemore. During the five days walking through heather and bracken, our conversation included my working life as a podiatrist and Andy's experience of foot problems. As a walking and climbing guide, naturally foot problems pose a major problem to his working day. So when Andy developed a severe pain in the ball of his left foot that radiated into the toes, he sought the services of a podiatrist in Inverness. The pain was diagnosed as plantar digital neuritis (Mortons Neuroma) In 1876, Thomas Morton first described nerves being compressed between the metatarsal heads in the forefoot often leading to enlargement of the nerve sheath and the development of a neuroma. This results in a combination of pain, paresthesia (pins and needles) and numbness in the forefoot. Morton neuromas are more common in women, with a female-to-male ratio of 4:1. They tend to occur in the fifth decade of life and frequently are exacerbated by constrictive footwear. I often find this condition occurs in patients with unstable feet leading to an imbalance in weight bearing. A full biomechanical examination and analysis of gait is essential to determine possible causes and plan treatment . An x-ray can be helpful but is not always conclusive of neuroma presence. Conservative treatment includes a corrective insole (orthotic) in the shoe to correct any imbalances in foot alignment. It is this imbalance which leads to the compression on the nerve and neuroma development. An injection of corticosteroid and local anaesthetic can be helpful although not always a long term solution. Unfortunately this is not always beneficial and surgery may be necessary. In Andy's case orthotics proved very effective and he is able to walk and climb the mountains of Scotland at ease. Which is the wettest town in England

and Wales?

You do not expect a London cabbie to

know that , but yes, Bryan does.

It’s Capel Curig in Snowdonia .

However, during our weekend

training up there, the weather was

very charitable to us and we were

able to enjoy the training up in the

mountains with just a drizzle.

Accommodation, food and training

were second to none .

The scenery on the location is one of

the best in Wales.

We returned to London with an

honours degree in Map Interpreting,

use of Compass, Navigation and Hill

Walking .

Would you wish for more?

George

Thank you to the Redbridge Ramblers

for enabling us to take part in the

‚Discover Hill Navigation‛ course. I

had a brilliant time, the whole centre

presented a fantastic experience with

knowledgeable instructors. The

location, accommodation and food

were superb, contour interpretation

amongst waist high bracken was a

challenge but I have picked up some

valuable tips and skills. Made me

realize I am still the apprentice.

Virginia

Virginia made good use of the training when she became a leader for part of the

token will be appreciated by leaders. Leaders should complete the slip above and return it to -

NO new leaders ! ! !

This is the first programme for some while in which we have no new leaders

to introduce !

Members should be aware that each year Redbridge Ramblers loses some

leaders and it is therefore vital that the group recruits new leaders to carry on

their excellent work and help produce our full and varied programme.

If you are not sure what is involved talk to the Rambles Secretary or ask

any of the current leaders.

Help can be given to plan or assist in leading a walk until you gain confidence

We have a small stock of local walking guidebooks and maps which new

leaders may wish to borrow when planning a walk.

Please do not wait to be asked, but contact the Rambles Secretary if you

would like more information or would like to borrow a book or a map.

Lifts to Shorter Walks

We do not normally organise pick-up points for our short walks but for a few

of our new ’Ambles’ and Saturday walks we are suggesting that if you need a

lift you can phone the leader beforehand to see if one can be arranged.

We are also asking anyone who intends driving to the start of these walks,

and is willing to give a lift, to let the leader know so that they can pass on the

information.

This is an experiment for us, please help if you can.

The walks where this will apply are identified by a ‘phone symbol.

Contact the Leader !

If there are rail Engineering Works

which might affect a walk which you

intend joining, or, in the Winter, if

there are inclement weather

conditions which might cause

problems, please do not hesitate to

telephone the leader beforehand to

gain advice about alternative routes

or to know whether a walk might be

cancelled (though this is most

unusual).

It might save you a wasted journey !

A Leader’s (tongue in cheek) Lament

It all starts with a gentle hint from the

walks co-ordinator - "Would you like to

lead a walk ?"

You reluctantly succumb and with

some trepidation take on your first walk -

14 years ago in my case.

After that there is no escape and once

every 4 months the much awaited walks

programme arrives.

Having tried all excuses to avoid

sending in the walks form you bow to the

inevitable and the fun commences.

First the date. Not too difficult between

Dec. and March or August and Nov. But

April to July, what a nightmare. Details

of dates and walks required by 31

January. Okay if you are single and

organised but book a day in June or July

and inevitably when discussing summer

holidays with your wife in February she

isn‘t happy to discover that the very

holiday she would like to book clashes

with a walk date selected in January.

Having sorted the date comes the

easy (?) part - where to walk, car park,

pub, try somewhere different (some hope)

look for historical connection or other

item of interest which those who turn up

may (or may not) like to know about,

complete form and send off with a sigh of

relief.

4 months later panic sets in when you

realize the walk is only a couple of weeks

away. Unless you are an extremely

confident leader it needs walking out at

least once, so off you go with map and

compass - or GPS for the technically

competent— in order to sort out the best

route and try to fit it to the description

and mileage you gave all those months

ago and hope that the pub is still open.

The great day arrives. Don‘t drink too

much tea at breakfast for obvious reasons.

Check the weather. Even if it is dour a

couple of diehards will turn up and want

to walk.

With any luck you don‘t arrive at the

car park to find another group using it,

you don‘t go wrong anywhere (or if you

do no one notices), the mileage is fairly

accurate and everyone enjoys the day, or

at least says they do !

As you remove your boots you breathe

a sigh of relief and, of course, the cycle

begins again.

The final act, especially if the pub has

allowed sandwiches to be eaten on the

premises is to send a card to the landlord.

Which reminds me, before leaving the

pub ensure everything is left clean and

tidy - you or someone else might wish to

use the pub again, and we do not want to

antagonise a welcoming landlord.

General Guidance for

the Public

Most walks listed here are intended

primarily for „Ramblers‟ members.

Non-members are welcome to join us

as guests on two or three walks, though if

you walk with Redbridge Ramblers

regularly you will be expected to join

‗The Ramblers‘.

Most of our walks are off-road in

rural areas and people who are only used

to walking on surfaced paths in towns

may find them more demanding than they

expect. If you're unsure of your fitness

level, try a short easy walk first: it's much

better to find a walk a little too slow and

easy than to make yourself miserable and

exhausted. Please have suitable footwear

and clothing for the walk you intend to

join, and bring some food and drink, even

if the walk includes a pub or cafe break.

Leaders may refuse to accept participants

who in their opinion are inadequately

equipped or unfit or will be unable to

cope with the distance and/or maintain

the pace required. When in doubt, contact

the leader in advance. For your own and

others' safety please follow advice and

instructions of the leader. Every care is

taken in planning walks, but we can

accept no liability and participation is

entirely at your own risk.

Disclaimer: Walkers join walks at their own risk and

neither Redbridge Ramblers nor

‗The Ramblers‘ is responsible for any

accidents that may occur during a walk.

However, if an accident occurs the leader

must note full details, together with

names and addresses of persons involved,

and pass such information to the

Secretary who is required to keep an

accident book for ‗The Ramblers‘.

Walks:

Walks include the ―Explorer‖ map

number and the Ordnance Survey

national grid reference.

If you do not have a map, the

alpha numeric reference can be used to

view or print a map of the starting point

by clicking the grid reference link on our

website at

http://www.redbridgeramblers.org.uk.

All walks are circular unless otherwise

stated. Please do not walk in front of the

leader and advise the leader if you wish

to leave before the end of the walk.

Shared Cars:

If you are a car driver with a spare seat,

please call at the local meeting point to

offer a lift. This

is particularly

useful when the

leader either does

not drive or live

locally – in

which case ―except leader‖ will appear

in the longer description of the walk.

Sharing cars also minimises parking in

sensitive areas.

Please note the recommended

contribution towards fuel is now:

up to 50 miles return £3.50

50 to100 miles £4.50

100+ miles £5.50

These are the new recommended

contributions from April 2010.

Long distance weekends and very short

distances are by mutual agreement.

Dogs:

Only working guide dogs in harness are

permitted on group walks.

Food & Clothes: It is recommended that you wear walking

boots or Wellingtons and bring water-

proof clothing, packed lunch and hot

drink. There will be breaks for

refreshments and lunch on most walks.

Do not rely on getting food at a lunchtime

pub stop. In summer do not forget sun

cream, water and protection for head and

neck.

Lunch Stops:

Do not eat your own food at a pub unless

advised by the leader that it is OK and

under no circumstances consume your

own drinks or the group will not be made

welcome in the future.

Mud:

Avoid taking mud inside a pub. Take

your boots off, wear boot covers or cover

them with plastic bags.

Rail Travel:

Check for engineering works and also

train times for walks starting at rail

stations.

Start Times:

Times stated are for the start of the walk

please allow plenty of time for parking,

booting up etc.

Walking Etiquette:

Do not walk ahead of the leader,

particularly in difficult terrain or adverse

weather conditions, and do not walk on

when they are checking the route or

waiting for others to catch up. From time

to time look behind, especially when

changing direction, and make sure that

those behind have seen which way to go.

When using walking Sticks and Poles

always consider the safety of others

around you and in particular when

climbing over stiles.

Competition – Can you help “Snow White”

At a hostelry in Much Wenlock, after a hard morning‘s walk, ―Snow White‖ was sitting with seven ―Dwarfs‖ – While trying to give

each dwarf the appropriate name, she felt that some of those names were rather derogatory and so decided to rename them all.

Here are the names she chose: Sunny, Smarty, Salty, Speedy, Stubbly, Smoothy and Smiley. She was very pleased with her

choices when in came the eighth ―Dwarf‖. Being unable to think of a suitable name for the newcomer she is asking you to help.

The original seven are from left to right below and the newcomer is at the right hand side

To win the prize, a free coach trip for the 2011 season, you need to match the original seven with the names above and then, as a

tie-breaker, add the most appropriate name for the newcomer.

Remember that the new name must be complimentary and starting with an ‗S‘.

Send your entries to Jean Brailsford - [email protected] -14 Keynsham Ave., Woodford Green, IG8 9SZ before 30th Nov.

NB: The competition is not open to Snow-White, the eight Dwarfs and their relatives!
