Our U14 rugby team thrived in the rain and the mud on Saturday in their game against Dunstan. I enjoyed their commitment and was impressed by their handling and structure in the slippery conditions. Kia ora koutou

Bravery, valour, determination, nerve, grit, spirit and daring are all words that define ‘Courage’, one of the ‘big three’ values of our College Kawa. We are promoting this value with our students over the remainder of this term, how we can encourage and demonstrate courage in the classroom and in the school grounds. Some examples are: persisting, taking a calculated risk, giving your opinion, standing up to negative peer pressure and supporting others. Our goal is for all of our students to become courageous learners and citizens.

Elgregoe The Magician and his assistant Sue conveyed their powerful message of respect, being helpful, tolerant and caring to Year 7 and 8 students on Tuesday. Their mix of magic and important values reinforces our College Kawa very effectively.

Congratulations to Nevis House who are now on the come-back trail in the House Competition after dominating our Swimming Championships last week. Well done to the champions and thank you to the parents and senior students for their valuable assistance.

SNOW DAYS

YEAR 7 & 8 ICESKATING

Year 7 students and teachers were missing from school on June 13th because they were Ice Skating and Swimming in Alexandra. It was a misty day but as we glided onto the Alex Ice Rink the sun shone bright.

While there we had a lesson, curled and had some free skating time.

During the lesson we were taught how to stop in a hurry and dodge large obstacles. We also learned some basics, like going forwards and backwards and skating in bubbles.

Curling was fun. It required some skill. We were actually sliding the stones and ourselves. It was hard trying not to slide the stone too hard or too slow. We had some fun games.

Free Skating was cool because we got to skate with our friends and push each other on the sleds. It was nice to play in the warm pool after all the cold ice.

We all had a great day. It was lots of fun but very tiring and we can’t wait until we go back next year. A big THANKS to all the fab parent helpers. It was awesome to have you there.

LINWOOD COLLEGE CONCERT BAND PERFORMANCE The Linwood College Concert Band performed for Years 7, 9, 10 and senior music students on Friday in the Cromwell College Auditorium. They were on a South Island tour travelling from their base in Christchurch and performed as a whole orchestra, a jazz band and a barber shop group. It was probably the first time many of our students had heard male singers harmonising unaccompanied. All the groups were energetic and skillful and the Cromwell College Jazz Band was fortunate to listen to the Linwood Jazz Band more during the lunch hour. One of the Linwood staff commented on how our students were a great audience. This is pleasing as it is something we have been working on in the past year.

PB4L UPDATE

At the College the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) initiative is focusing on Courage. We have discussed with the Students and Staff what we think showing courage looks like in school. Courage is different for everyone but the main 4 areas that we have arrived at are: Trying hard tasks, perseverance, resilience, seeing it

through, failing and retrying Doing the RIGHT thing even when its hard - standing

up for your beliefs, speaking out, being true to yourself, not worrying what others think, supporting others

Taking responsibility - admitting if your wrong, asking for help, apologising

If it’s hard but the right thing to do - it's probably showing courage! Students will be collecting Medals for showing courage at school, for the student showing the most courage we have been donated the ultimate act of courage - a Sky Dive by Skydive Wanaka. There are lots of other rewards to encourage students, as well as the increase in achievement and feel good factor that goes with courage.
