Monthly Show & Sale Dairy Cattle Monday 19th October

The October sale saw 28 of the 29 catalogued entries forward. Trade was much improved on the month with a ring side of buyers eagerly competing to secure replacement heifers and cows.

The pre-sale show was judge by Holstein Young Breeder, Tom Gorst of Saltoke Holsteins. The champion rosette was awarded to Lot 19, Bilsrow Ostia Fleury from David & James Tomlinson of Bilsborrow Hall, this heifer also stood first in the halter led heifer class. She later went on to realise £2000.

The reserve champion was awarded to regular vendor J Burrow & Son with Lot 7, Stardale Tiergan Vaakje 3, this sweet heifer giving 34litres went on to achieve the day’s top price of £2180.

Cows sold to a top of £2020 from J Huddleston, Ravenscar with Lot 14, Ravenscar Lovejoy Hyacinth a strong second calver giving 42litres.

Six heifers broke the £2000 barrier, with all classes considerably dearer than the previous month. An overall average of £1640 for all heifers forward and £1580 for all cows.

A very similar trade to the previous week with some better quality cattle forward and more fleshed cattle today with fewer short keep and more medium keep cattle in. Fleshed cattle continue to sell well with the weath-ered cattle harder to sell. Vendors are strongly advised to become Farm Assured to gain full financial benefit from their stock. Big steers sold in excess of £1,300 topping at £1,370 for a Charolais from A & E Clarkson of Cock Hall. Heifers sold to a top of £1290 from Fishwick Farms of Silverdale for a Simmental. Native bred cattle always sell well at Lancaster.

OTM and Cast Cows at Lancaster had an entry of 89 forward with a busy active ringside of buyers with every type of cattle eagerly bid for. All v

endors left pleased with a strong trade throughout. An overall market average of 107ppk with better black and whites selling between 125ppk and 130ppk. The trade was topped at 181.5ppk from JJ Valiant of Shires Farm.

Younger Blue heifers to £285 from the same home. Black and White calves to £125 and £122 from JS & KM Wilson and JM & MH France & Son. Stirks sold to a good trade, topping at £460 for Hereford heifers from S Moore, with more from the same home next week. Friesians to £315 from D & A Travis, Manor Farm.

Stirks next week, 23rd October to be sold at 9:45, with an entry of 50 already.

Monday 19th OctoberMonday 19th OctoberMonday 19th OctoberMonday 19th October Following the large drop in Prime Lamb price at the start of last week and the decline in lamb price throughout the week a smaller entry of just over 600 for-ward today saw a better trade then the end of the previous week. Continental and Suffolk lambs noticeably dearer with Mule lambs no better trade then the previous week. A lot of heavy lambs in the market with lambs between 40kg and 42kg very short of supply and good to sell. The overall market average was 141ppk but a large percentage of lambs forward were heavy weights, pulling the average back slightly. Better bred heavy weight lambs sold in excess of £70 topping at £75.50 from TM Townley of Knowsley farm. Light weight lambs that are well fleshed continue to sell well at Lancaster, topping at 169ppk for 34kg Texel lambs from PD Pye of Marl House.

A good show of 158 Cast Ewes and Tups this morning, with a stronger trade than last week, some £12 up, to average £56/head. Topping trade today was James Sanderson with a Texel ewe realising £100. Followed by a Texel Tup from RW & FJ Rhodes, achieving £96. First cross Texel ewes often breaking the £70 mark. Mules to £76 from WTC Farms, best mules over £60 with the majority in the late £50’s. Dalesbreds topped at £47/head from E & N Wright & Sons whilst Swales topped at £42 from B & SE Carter, Ellel.

A larger entry of seven Prime Bull forward in Lancaster, the trade was competitive

with other local centres with a variety of types of bulls forward. Suckler bred

Limouisn bulls sold to 201.5ppk from JA Airey of Old Croft Farm. British Blue bulls

bred from the dairy herd sold to 187.5ppk from JS & KM Wilson of High House who

also sold top price Black and White bulls sold to 144.5ppk. A consignment of

Montbeliarde bulls sold to 177.5ppk twice from GA Haston & Son of Lane House.

The beef calf trade was very strong with all types of beef calves eagerly bid for with a great choice of beef calves available for a busy ring of bidders to bid on. Strong and better quality beef calves today easily selling up towards and over the four hundred pound mark. A cracking run of Charolais and Angus calves from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons of Sowerby Lodge, Garstang saw Charolais bulls at a couple of months topped at £405 and Angus bulls sell to £400 with plenty selling £380 plus. British Blue bulls sold to £400 from HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree who also sold the top priced Blue heifer at £355. Weaned Black and Whites sold to £185 from Barker Farms. Good quality rearing calves still in strong demand with younger and plainer types today taken a major hit as the market currently over supplied and many buyers full at the moment. The stirks sold to a mixed trade with a variety of all sorts forward today. British Blue steers topped at £630 from HG Spensley & Son of County Durham with Hereford steers from the same home selling to £530. A selection of Black & Whites forward saw six to eight month old steers sell to £370 from MD Close of Docker with four month old bulls from A Barnes of Moss Side.

There was 153 Store and Breeding Cattle forward. Store Cattle continued to be a nice trade, with more dairy bred cattle about today. Younger store beef cattle were easy to sell.

The top price was £1160 for a 15 mo Limousin bullock from G H Jones, Fold Farm. The Breeding Cattle ring had a good ringside of buyers and more could have been sold. Top price was £1650 for a Limousin Cow with a bull calf at foot from G M Strong, School Hill.

Saturday 17th OctoberSaturday 17th OctoberSaturday 17th OctoberSaturday 17th October A Busy sale of breeding sheep was held at NWA J36 for the final breeding sheep sale of 2015 with a full ringside of buyers in attendance from the northern counties and North Wales.

Gimmer lambs saw keen interest from farmer buyers looking to top up numbers and sold to a top price of £102 for a single mule from MK Robinson, Staveley. Best bunches of running lambs £70 - £73. Pure Texel lambs achieved £90 from Messrs Clarke, Tebay and others £74,£74 from JE Hudson, Woodland. Cheviots topped at £70 from BA Hogg, Murton. Horned Gimmer lambs saw best Swaledales £62, Rough Fells £47 and Herdwicks £30.

Breeding ewes and shearlings experienced keen bidding for all types which included several consignments of sheep having run with the tup. Shearlings sold to a top price of £172 for Beltex shearlings from SJ Rushworth with others at £165. Mule shearlings sold to £135 for strongest sorts from EI Wilson with others £128 W Atkinson, £120 F&TE Park. Mule shearlings having run with a Texel tup sold to £120 from P Whitton. Older sheep generally £70 - £85 dependant on breed and condition. Hill sheep sold to £88 for Swaledales from Caley&Mitchinson, Rough Fells £84 E&K Bland and JW&M Blades. Herdwicks £72 from TJ Beaty.

The catalogued entry of over 250 Rams attracted buyers from throughout the Northern Counties keen to secure replacement stock. Terminal sire rams saw Texels sell to £380 from KO Stones, Beltex £280 M Williams, Suffolks £260 Messrs Ellwood. Hill rams sold to £400 for Cheviot from KO Stones, £460 BFL A Dixon & Son with Rough Fells £300 VR Guy.

A Mule shearling donated by Edward, Liz and James Park in conjunction with Crook Young Farmers Club was auctioned with all proceeds going towards the Robbie Young Appeal. This shearling was sold 5 times and realised a total price of £760. Thank you to all purchasers for your kind support.

Once again well fleshed and assured lambs selling to a premium with buyers showing caution to those which are not. A top price of £74.50 was achieved for a pen of Beltex x lambs from TL & S Cross, Westhouse with other heavy lambs generally £64 - £68. Best pens of standard weight lambs generally £60 - £65 peaking at £68 for Texel x from D Nicholson, Blawith. Mules forward in greater numbers and need to be well fleshed to ensure maximum saleability, today they sold to £59.50 from Clegg & Bennett, Seathwaite with other heavier sorts £56 - £58. Horned lambs sold to £57.50 for SBF and £52 Rough Fells.

A top price of 181p/kg was achieved for Texel x from TL & S Cross with other well finished better sorts generally achieving 150p/kg – 160p/kg. Mules 128p/kg – 140p/kg.

Light lambs again sold to keen interest with best meated lambs achieving £52 with half-bred lambs in the 32kg – 35kg range £46 - £50. Hill lambs sold to £48.50 for Swaledales and £38.50 for Herdwicks. More can be sold each week.

The weekly sale of Cast Sheep had another entry of in excess of 600 cast ewes and rams forward. Plenty of buyers in attendance today to buy all types of ewes on offer, with nine active buyers around the ring. Pure bred and three quarter bred Continental ewes sold £80 plus topping at £88 from NJ Strickland & Son of The Borrans. Stronger Mule ewes sold to £66 with pens of strong ewes in the early sixties. A large proportion of hill ewes in the market saw Rough Fell ewes sell to sixty and easily in the mid to late fifties with better swale ewes selling to £53 with plenty pens of good fit swale ewes selling in the forties. Lean ewes eagerly bid for and wanted for buyers to fulfil feeding jobs. Buyers very cautious of buying over fat ewes. Rams short of supply and eagerly bid for today. A selection of boar goat male kids sold to £56 from Ben Heap of Lupton.

An entry of four Dairy heifers at J36 this morning, with five active buyers ringside. Topping at £1500, for a second calved cow giving 30litres from Darren Dodgson, Cracalt. Another second calver, from JH Woof & Son realised £1480, both selling to Martin Ayrton of Cockerham. Heifers sold to £1480, again from Messers Woof, to average £1465.

The weekly of Store Lambs saw 777 forward selling to a top price of £56.50 for Char x lambs from JA & SM Allen followed by B & R Barnes selling Suffolk x lambs at £54. No real strong lambs forward today with best medium keep lambs £47 - £51 and smaller medium keep lambs £43- £46. Smaller bred lambs £37 - £41 with poorer bred sorts harder to sell.

Hill lambs sold to £49.50 for Mashams from JE Read and Cheviots from RI Dixon, Mules to £45 and Horned lambs £30.50. Tup lambs sold to £49.50 with oth-ers £ £42-£45 and smallest sorts £25 - £32.

All lambs today sold to average £45.38, with a falling national prime lamb trade, buyers are understandably showing caution when purchasing stores.
