Letter From the

Club President

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Heartfelt Congratulations to

Jan Stewart for being

presented with a Paul Harris

recognition by the Rotary

Club of Heirisson for the

invaluable assistance that Jan

has given to both their club

and to the community

through her work at

Lotterywest. Alan Stewart

and Jan’s parents Jim and

Mavis Elliott were concealed

in the wings (so that no hint

of the surprise was exposed)

until the appropriate time to

see Jan presented with the

recognition by the District

R o t a r y F o u n d a t i o n

Chairman, PRID Ken. Well

deserved Jan we are

delighted for you.

Thursday, 6th August saw us

induct Enid Wall into the

club. Welcome Enid! All

members look forward to

getting to know and

working with you.

Renee Wirth and Nina

Morrow gave members

present an insight into their

recent Group Study

Exchange to D. 5830 in

Texas. Andrea Williams, the

applicant put forward to the

District Group Study

Exchange Committee by the

RC of Freshwater Bay for the

GSE to D. 1640 in Normandy,

France in May/June of 2010

told us a little about herself

and we wish Andrea every

success with her application.

We are delighted to have had

a number of St John

Volunteers (all wonderful,

dedicated, service minded

individuals) apply as

members of Group Study

Exchange Teams over the

past few years. They have

made wonderful Team

members and we are

privileged to have Daniel

and Claire Forsdyke as

members of our cub.

Hopefully, as time passes,

more of the younger GSE

team members will also join

us. It is another of the

fantastic programs of the

Rotary Foundation designed

to help bring about world

u n d e r s t a n d i n g a n d

peace.....this one by building

bridges of friendship

between different countries

and cultures.

Alan Stewart briefly

informed members of the

projects he hopes to have

transpire with the

Aboriginals in Wiluna. We

look forward to more on this

from Alan when he is in

Perth and can be the

‘Programme’ speaker.

Blankets from Bethesda

Hospital provided by Roh

have gone off to the

Aboriginal Women’s Refuge.

Mandy Symons is sourcing

other items (toiletries and

personal items) sought by the

Refuge via her hockey club.

More on this in the Bulletin.

Roh brought a project for

flooring in a Hospital in Sri

Lanka back with him on his

recent trip there. He is

raising the majority of money

needed and asked if the RC

of Freshwater Bay would

pick up a portion of the cost.

Bryant Stokes has provided

the majority of this money

with the Collins’ putting in

the remainder needed.

Sincere thanks Bryant for

your generosity – it is

genuinely appreciated.

Unfortunately, the student

sponsored by the Club for

the National Science Youth

Forum from Christ Church

G r a m m a r, B e n j a m i n

McAllister was not

successful.

Please ensure every member

(and Friends of the Club)

possible is in attendance for

the Official Visit of the

District Governor on

Thursday, 1st October, 2009.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

and PolioPlus

Peter Symonds has between 60-70 tickets sold with $10 per ticket coming back to PP."

The Midnight Youth Theatre are performing West Side Story at The Playhouse Theatre, 3 Pier St, Perth on Saturday "15th (7:30pm) and Sunday 16th (6:00pm) August."

We are all looking forward to hearing Richard Symonds perform again."

Great job Peter for organising the tickets and to members for purchasing and selling them.

Global Poverty

Project

The launch of this was held last Sunday, 2nd August and was attended by Ken and Di Collins. " Australian Youth of the Year for 2004, Hugh Evans gave a very polished presentation on Global Poverty."

The interesting thing is that everything Hugh mentioned, Rotary is doing! " All that is needed is for Rotarians to become more educated and motivated to go the extra mile with its many projects and programs to alleviate global poverty."

It can and is achievable and could happen in our lifetime if governments worked with organisations such as Rotary to make it happen."

Climb for a

Smile

Roger Marston, Andrea Hayward and Elizabeth Baines are working on this." We look forward to hearing more from these members."

As well as participants, helpers on the day are required from around 8:00am until finish (1-2:00pm) or any period of this time that members can contribute to assist with the running of the event."

Weight

Disposal

Challenge

Daniel Forsdyke has registered the Club for this project. " Daniel and Simone Carot Collins will learn more about ‘Weight Disposal’ during the next month or so.

Daniel and Simone will then be able to present to the club how each member can become involved in this challenge.

Jan Stewart

PHF

Congratulations, well deserved Jan, from all members of the RC of Freshwater Bay.

Jim Elliott, Jan’s father was a long time Rotarian with the RC of Mt Hawthorn. " He is extremely proud that Jan is a Rotarian now and Jim, Mavis and Alan were all pleased to be present to witness " Jan presented with her Paul Harris Fellow recognition and seeing Jan as in her own words ‘speechless’."

Rotary Club of

Freshwater Bay

Foundation

President Kerry McAuliffe (RC of Perth) is seeking around for a Solicitor who will do the application for the Club Foundation ‘Pro Bono’ which will keep costs to set it up to a minimum."

Rtn Bryant Stokes and PRID Ken Collins have accepted the invitation to serve as Trustees of the Foundation, Run. Rtn Bill Hassel’s letter of invitation is awaiting his return from overseas and when responses are received from him and Jan Stewart, President Kerry will proceed with the next step in the process."

For those who would like to stay on and participate in a workshop on the various programs of the Rotary Foundation (eg how to complete Matching Grant applications etc.) there will be a cost of $10.00 for lunch.

Dinner,

Monday 16th

November,

2009

The International President of Rotary, John and his wife June Kenny from Scotland are coming to Perth specifically for RIP John to present an address on the Rotary Foundation.

Please mark this date in your diary now as it is the first time the President himself will have presented this Annual Address. " It will be the 12th Annual "RF Address, named the Dr. Ken Collins Address in honour of PRID Ken as he is the only Western Australian to serve as a Trustee of the Rotary Foundation and as a member of the International Board (Rotary’s two major Boards).

Most presenters of the Address have either been, gone onto become or are potential Presidents of Rotary International, hence they are the very cream of Rotary’s Senior Leaders."

It will be held at the Golden Nugget Room, Gloucester Park, East Perth, 7:00pm for 7:30pm. " Cost $45.00 for a two course meal."

Quiz Night

A quiz night is planned to raise some necessary dollars for the club’s Charity account.

Can all members start thinking about and seeking

out prizes for the event?" You may know businesses who would be happy to donate items, or you may have new, unwanted unopened items sitting in your cupboards which you have either purchased or been gifted – all would make excellent items for a Quiz night." Simone will coordinate this function.

Hi All

Rotary should receive a good plug on Channel 10’s Western Front this week, on Sunday just before the football, when they feature Hon Troy Buswell handing the three DG’s $150,000 on behalf of the Meve Charity Home project and Department of Housing and Construction.

Over the next few weeks “Climb for a Smile” should also get a plug on the same show.

Rotarians, if you get the chance to thank Channel 10 for their support and we may get more."

growthRotary International News -- 6

August 2009

In many districts, start-up clubs are helping to bridge the age gap that sometimes inhibits younger prospective members from joining. Below are some more examples of newer clubs that are creating their own niche in the Rotary world and helping to build membership:1 On the outskirts of

Amsterdam, 21 people gather at De Houten Vier restaurant each week. The newly chartered Rotary Club of A m s t e r d a m - A r e n a exemplifies the diverse membership that Rotary International leadership has stated is necessary to keep the organization strong. Read more.

2 Three former members of the Rotaract Club of R u s h d e n , N o r t h a m p t o n s h i r e , England, came up with the idea to launch a new Rotary club after they had turned 30 and could no longer qualify for Rotaract. The Rotary Club of Rushden Higham has an average age of 32, and all but four of its members are female. Read more.

3 A five-year-old Japanese Rotary club is expanding its membership by recruiting Foundation and RI program alumni. The Rotary Club of Kanagawa Shonan, Kanagawa, which began as a gathering of young professionals, was chartered on 15 December 2004 with 23 former Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange team members, and Rotary Youth Exchange students. 4 The Rotary Club of Duluth Superior Eco, which spans the border between Minnesota and Wi s c o n s i n , U S A , is"focusing its energies on helping the environment while reaching out to younger members. Read more.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 6: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about bringing smiles to those in need. Mother Theresa said “Peace Begins with a Smile” Rotarians around the world put that into action every

day. One example of this is a Rotary Foundation Volunteer Service Grant that helped Dr. Marco Antonio Bulas, of the Rotary club of Tehuacan Manantrails, Mexico and Rotary volunteers from the Rotary Club of Loveland, Colorado, USA carry out project Sonrisas Sin Fronteras (Smiles without Borders).

The Rotary volunteers and a team of 23 university dental

students provided dentures for 22 patients. “All of the team watched with great satisfaction as each patient was over come with joy and happiness” commented Ronnie Hogan, a member of the Loveland club. Every Rotarian, Every Year can bring a smile to the face of someone in need.
