Nambucca Heads Public School Newsletter Wednesday 12th May, 2021 Giinagay to our NHPS Community, We often talk to our students about the culture of pride, respect and excellence at the red school. I speak from personal experience as not only a longstanding staff member, but as a former student - our red school has a long, proud history in our community. Whether it be academic or sporting achievement, community involvement, leadership, cultural celebrations, creative and performing arts or any number of other opportunities our students participate in, our red uniform is clearly recognised as belonging to students who demonstrate respect and set an outstanding example in everything they do. This respect was evident yesterday when we were visited by Uncle Bud who sat in the playground to have a yarn with anyone who wanted to drop by. Our students are always excited to see Uncle Bud and welcomed him with open arms. They asked thoughtful questions, listened to his stories with interest and thoroughly enjoyed their time with one of our well- respected local Gumbaynggirr Elders. Over the course of the last week we have seen students representing our school with pride in a number of elite sporting events. Regardless of the outcome or whether or not students were selected in trial teams, I would like to congratulate every single one of these students for the courage, respect, resilience and confidence that they have consistently demonstrated as they represent NHPS. That our two school captains, Miller and Halo, are included in this group is no surprise. Last Friday evening I was thrilled to receive the following email from the coach of the North Coast AFL boys team; this is yet another outstanding example of the calibre of young people we are privileged to call part of our Nambucca Heads Public School learning community. Congratulations Nate, Archie and Miller - you should be exceptionally proud! “Dear Kate, I just wanted to write to you to congratulate the three boys that represented Nambucca Heads PS so well over the past week at the PSSA AFL State Championships. Nate, Archie and Miller all showed themselves not only to be talented footballers but also young men with exceptional character. All three boys were a pleasure to coach. They played in multiple positions over the four days and each had had various roles to play. They were extremely positive and had a team first attitude at all times along with the rest if their teammates. Nate and Archie seemed to show improvement with every game. Miller had an exceptional carnival and he was judged the North Coast player of the carnival. He is a humble young man that led by example.” At the same time these boys were making such a positive impression in Byron Bay, three of our senior girls were competing in Sydney in the State AFL Championships. Halo, Honey and Reese showed endurance, skill and stamina throughout the tournament. In an outstanding result, Halo and Honey were selected in the first ever All Girls Primary AFL team. What’s Happening in 1-2 Manta Ray ...

I received the following report from a very proud parent: “The girls played under the Northern Coastal and Inland Areas umbrella where they came up against another five teams from all over the state. The first game was a tricky one and they were pretty nervous. They hadn't yet had a chance to play with any of the other girls on the team and then they were hit by a massive downpour of rain that lasted for pretty much the whole game! This first game was against the Sydney metro team that eventually won the tournament. For our girls, the more games they played the better they became and more confident in themselves and as a team. They had two games back to back with a 15 min recess break and then another two back to back with a 20 min lunch break then

another game five games in five hours. These girls are amazing!”

Well done Halo, Honey and Reese!

This resilience and confidence was also on display yesterday as our Year 3 and 5 students completed their NAPLAN writing assessment. In what can sometimes be perceived as a challenging or unfamiliar “test” situation it was fantastic to hear the chatter as students returned to their classrooms; there was genuine excitement about the effort they had put in and they were proud of the writing they had done—apparently “it was just like doing Big Write!”. It’s been a very busy start to the term and it’s hard to believe that next week marks the mid-point of Term 2! Reports will come home with all students at the end of this term. If you would like to discuss your child’s learning with their classroom teacher please contact the office to make an appointment.

After recess on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

1-2 Manta Ray Drop Everything And Read! We

take time to enjoy the fantastic variety of texts we

have in our classroom library. Whilst reading we

are discovering the type of books we like to read and are finding WOW words to add to our Vinnie Vocab wall. This time also helps us to calm our bodies and

our minds.

GIRLS AFL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Reese, Honey and Halo were selected in the Northern Coastal and Inland All Schools team to participate the inaugural PSSA Girls AFL championship at Rooty Hill in Sydney. They excelled throughout the tournament playing 5 games over 5 hours on the one day. State selectors had a tough time with Reese, Honey and Halo all playing exceptionally well. Halo was named North Coast player ‘Best On Ground’. Halo and Honey were then named in the NSW Team. Being in the Top 18 from 108 who tried out was truly remarkable. The Championship was held on the same day as the 50th anniversary of the first PSSA Boys AFL Championships. Congratulations to Reese, Honey and Halo! BOYS AFL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Archie, Nate and Miller really impressed the team coach and selectors with their outstanding sportsmanship, team play and AFL skills. They played in multiple positions over the four days and were able to adapt and fulfil the roles where required. Nate and Archie impressed the coach with their commitment to improve and give their personal best. Miller had an exceptional carnival and he was judged the North Coast player of the carnival. As part of the carnival, a side of 23 footballers are chosen to then represent NSW. There were 286 students competing over across the 13 regions. Whilst Miller was not chosen, he was in the discussions as part of the final 30 players which is a fantastic achievement in itself. Congratulations to Miller, Nate and Archie. MID NORTH COAST CROSS COUNTRY Last Friday 17 talented runners headed north west to Nana Glen Equestrian Centre for the annual Mid North Coast Cross Country. They were greeted with a glorious blue sky and perfect running conditions. The track proved challenging as athletes ran over horseshoe divots, through mud patches and up a steep hill at the finish. It really tested the students but they all arrived back safe with a smile on their face. Congratulations to Piper D, Sunny C, James J-C, Orville D, Jack N, Ashton S, Izabella McQ, Ashley M, Josie T, Pablo G, Poppy B, Miller B, Lexie B, Tara W, Darcy T and Ruby H on their amazing performances. Pablo G 3rd, Lexie B 3rd, Ashley M 4th and Halo C have now booked a spot in the Mid North Coast squad to travel to Lismore Turf Club to compete in the North Coast Championships on 7th June. Miller B came in 7th and is eagerly waiting for his call up to attend. An amazing achievement. Good luck! NORTH COAST RUGBY LEAGUE Good luck to Joe B who is attending the North Coast Rugby League Camp this weekend aiming for selection in the North Coast Team to attend the State Championships. FOOTBALL (Soccer) STATE KNOCKOUT Both boys and girls teams will travel to Urunga this Friday to take on the winners of the Urunga/Bellingen clashes. The draw has been amended so girls will play first, followed by the boys. A huge thank you to all our parents and families who have been able to organise transport at short notice. Your support is truly appreciated.
