What I had to do…

• My brief was asking to create an album cover for a band, (Q1)

• an advertisement for the song to go into a music magazine,

• we also had to create a digi pack. • We were advised to have a performance-based music video so it is

more engaging with the viewer. • My music video has to be 3-4 minutes long so we must include as

much as we can with editing and effects• The next thing I have to do was choose what artist I wanted.

Choosing my Artist…• (Question 1)• When I completed my research on my theme I knew I did not need a

particular artist I needed a few dances and that’s when I decided to use lips for some of the lyrics because that went better with my theme of club music.

• Lip-synching works well asMany performers prefere to lipSynch it adds something differentTo their video

I analyzed a lot of music videos that were similar themes to mine I looked also at a lot of live club scenes on YouTube that gave me inspiration for it. One of the main ones for me that I liked was Keisha (your love is my drug) she did not have many different people in her music video it was mainly her which I really liked I think it worked effectively.

The Track….• (question1)• I decided to do a club track as I think that club music is a very

popular genre at the moment but is also lacking individuality.• A lot of club music videos are just of a club scene so I decided to

take it as something different.

Club & Ballet Using contrasting dance style I think it will give it some

individuality amongst other music videos. I think that I achieved getting my theme across well even if I did such a contrasting dance style ballet and club dancing.

After choosing the track…• (question 4)• Once I had decided on my track ‘Give you’ by Dijamin, • I wrote down a few ideas that would link with my theme and how I wanted my video to

start and end so I could sort out the storyline. • I thought that it would target anybody and everybody, as it’s an upbeat song so it

needed to be an upbeat music video. • I decided that I would make this music video mainly performance based with my red

lips as my performer singing and then I have the dancers which is the main type of performance in my video.

• Also including some narrative elements, such as the girl and how she changes her contrast in dancing and the mise en scene is very important showing her different looks gave me a variety of ideas to change bits and cut bits from my video.

• How a girl is dancing as club music then changing her age and her style in dance by the end of the song we realize she has ended with her being older doing a different dance showing us the different times and stages of her dancing. Even though its quite a simple music video not using many different people in it in a way has more of an effect because people concentrate more on them and follow their story instead of having lots of people and different storylines and it not becoming clear to the viewer. I think it is what I wanted to portray and I think that the contrasts fits well with the record.

Target Audience…• (question 1)• My target audience was very important as some club tracks have scenes

where young viewers could not see. • I did mine as an older audience- teenagers because it was going to include

alcohol but I changed my mind, as I wanted mine to have a wider audience and not be so selective.

• Many music videos loose money as they cant show their music videos on places like MTV, which is such big advertising. Some music videos are part of the whole music industry because they are (most of the time) aimed at specific audiences such as gender, social groups, age, race ect. This helps the producers because it will gain better promotion and sales of the song.

Editing….The idea I had would require quite a bit of editing and persistence

due to linking the voice with the lips singing. I think that I achieved this it was hard originally because when I changed bits of the dance it would change the timing of my lips singing so it would keep going out of time. Having a mixed speed change of shots for example the slow motion part of the ballet and then the speeding up of her turning shows a nice contrast and should help keep the

viewer interested.

I used Final Cut Express to add more advanced effects to my video to change the colorings in some parts and the contrast. I wanted my music video to have more jump cuts not all running smoothly because I think it shows that these two dance styles are meant to clash. I did then put it on IMOVIE to finish so that I could put it on a disc in an easier way, so I did some final small effects using that. (question 4)

The Aim…• The aim in my video was to attract a large audience so it would get more

people to buy the track. I did this by making my advertisement stand out using bold print such as a bright pink on a black background.

• After making the introduction of the one dancer I think this looked good and simple I used a very basic shot but had to keep the camera steady because she was using so much movement. (Keeping the camera steady is one of the most important things, as it looks very unprofessional if it is really shaking). ( Question 2)

Page 10: My music video Evaluation

Feedback…• As I was doing my editing, I decided to get some feedback as I went along,

because I used someone out of school it was easier to get feedback for young people at school I got lots of good feedback that I think helped improve it. What some people said:

• At the beginning when the lyrics come in I started with the dancing and then brought in the lips later on, a lot of people said that it would look better with the lips starting straight away as it is something that is very eye-catching and will make someone look and want to watch the whole music video. I added effects such as motion blur when my lips were singing just a small bit so that it looked a bit distorted. (question 3)

Good needs more shots more colour Contrast edits keep in time characters

Page 11: My music video Evaluation

Was it successful?...• looking back at my music video I think it was successful and it met the brief. I

think it shows the right theme I was getting across and the dance styles. Because I had never done anything like this before or any editing at all I was worried how it would end up looking.

• I knew it was going to be very challenging but I think I really tried to use as many effects as I knew. I was glad with the reaction I got from people when they saw my music video in stages I got helpful feedback but also lots of positive comments that helped.

• Having not much of a narrative made it hard for me to make the video into a short video otherwise I was worried people would not understand what I was getting across as they could find it confusing. Lots of people said it was the type of video that did not need much of a storyline and they found it easy to follow.

(Question 3)

Page 12: My music video Evaluation

What would I change?...

• I think if I could re do this project I would make it have more of a storyline as I think this is something that mine is lacking.

• I would add some more interesting effects so that it grabs my audiences attention more. As I edited my song I think I needed to spend more time with it, I spent all my time on the research and video that my song needed to be edited more carefully.

• I started with too much slow motion, as I liked this effect because it works well with club music but once I got feedback I realized I had too much so I cut some out.

• One of the negative views on the whole production that the audience thought I could have improved on was the lighting I could have taken bits in better lighting as I thought lots of it had a light in the background, which was needed. As I filmed some of it in South Africa it caused the lighting to always be bright was hard to find a dark room so it did change the effect that I wanted with the lips I wanted only the red lips to be showing no strong light in the background. (question 3)

Page 13: My music video Evaluation

Conclusion…• With my advertisement and digi pak I also got feedback and most of it

was good. I decided to change my digi pak a few times until most people agreed with how it had turned out.

• Once my Digi pak and my advertisement were complete I got a lot of good feedback from them and was pleased with the final outcome. It was nice to hear as I did put a lot of time and effort into my project.

• My research was one of the things that I put effort into most because I think this was definitely the most important part. Research is what helped me complete my piece I watched many music videos and looked in lots of magazines in different countries as well to see how music was advertised.

Overall I was very happy with how my final piece was, yes I

think there is a lot of improvement to be done but hopefully it was done at the standard I wished for when it was re-done.
