Celtic Music Radio presenters Danny Matheson and Ruth Hamilton have set themselves a Commonwealth Games’ musical challenge. The duo aim to feature a song or tune from every one of the 71 countries represented at the Games on their Sensational Sunday Special show, which started on 20 July and for the following two programmes on 27 July and 3 August. From Scotland to Swaziland, Canada to Cameroon, Australia to Anguilla all kinds of music will be played – and they don’t mean national anthems. Each weekend, Danny and Ruth broadcast their two-hour show between 4 and 6 pm on the charitable status community radio station that goes out on 95FM

in the Glasgow area, picking a specific topic each week. “We thought making the Games our theme for the next three Sundays would be really topical, entertaining and interesting,” said Danny, who’s been presenting the show with Ruth since the start of the year. “Playing a song from every country is what we hope to achieve and we have some good tracks in mind already.” Bigger, better known nations such as Scotland, England, Canada and Australia will pose no problems but Danny and Ruth freely admit that their knowledge of music in some of the countries is nil – so they will need all the help they can get. Ruth said: “We get lots of suggestions every week when we reveal our theme. “Finding something to play from lesser known countries will be tricky but already we’ve tracked down music from Anguilla, Vanuatu, Nigeria and Tanzania, where Freddy Mercury was born – however, if anyone wants to suggest a song or a tune, then that would be great. “It is a real novelty. Whether we manage to cover every country remains to be see – if we do, I reckon we deserve a medal as well as the athletes taking part in the Games.” Any suggestions can be sent to Danny’s email at the Glasgow-based station, which is run by volunteers: [email protected] www.celticmusicradio.net https://twitter.com/celt95fm www.facebook.com/celticmusicradio95FM

That evening, there will be a special event at the Loch Lomond Sea Life Centre where they will play with the fantastic group, Breabach. Arthur Cormack, Fèisean nan Gàidheal’s Chief Executive said: “Cèilidh Trails are a great oppotunity for young people to gain skills that will stand them in good stead should they wish to make their living as a musician. It gives them a first-hand experience of life as a touring

musician and all the preparation that goes into making that a success, as well as giving young people a summer job doing something they enjoy and providing a great musical experience for tourists and locals alike.” Fèisean nan Gàidheal supports 44 Fèisean in 43 communities across Scotland, many of which are taking place during the summer school holidays. Collectively the Fèisean offer tuition in traditional music, Gaelic song, drama and traditional dance to around 6,000 young people annually. "Sensational" Hot Seats return for Scottish tour

A band that has appeared at just about every major festival in the UK, Virginian livewires The Hot Seats, have returned to these shores for their sixth tour - and most of the dates are in Scotland where they have a big following. The five-piece have added a string of dates where fans will get a chance to hear blistering new material from a brand new album, their eighth - which has just had its official release. The Hot Seats have gathered praise following performances at big events such as Celtic Connections, Didmarton Bluegrass Festival, Maverick Festival, HebCeltFest, Speyfest and Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they picked up the biggest accolade possible - a Herald Angel - for their outstanding contribution to the event following a sell-out run at The Famous Spiegeltent. They were widely recognised as one of the outstanding acts at last year’s Shetland Folk Festival, their fiery brand on blistering Appalachian old-time mixed with left of centre bluegrass and a sprinkling of their own compositions winning them loads of attention. Frontman Josh Bearman, a multi-instrumentalist, like several of his sidekicks,

said they were delighted to be heading back to areas of Scotland they have visited and enjoyed previously. “It’s great to play on the big festival stages, but we love it too, whenever we get a chance to take our music into the more intimate performance spaces. We are playing at three UK festivals this year, as well as returning to some smaller clubs and halls, so the balance is just how we like it.” The band started out fine-tuning their skills on the redneck bars and college clubs circuit where they experimented with a suitcase-full of assorted toys to supplement the guitar/mandolin/banjo/fiddle/bass line-up, employing everything from jawharp to washboard, tin can percussion and vintage trap-kit drum set. Their original music is simultaneously hard to classify and instantly identifiable, combining the virtuosic soloing and tightness of bluegrass, the band-driven rhythm of old time, the jerky bounce of ragtime, and the swagger of good old rock and roll. www.facebook.com/thehotseats https://twitter.com/thehotseats

Their Scottish dates are:

Draw release their single 'Alone Again Or' to raise money for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland

'Alone Again Or' has sat in the archives of Empire Records Scotland for the last 11 years and Draw are delighted to get it out there into the public domain, and all for such a wonderful cause as Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

Originally formed back in 2000 Draw went on to play 150 gigs across the UK in three years. The band evolved through six studios before eventually arriving at Castlesound in Pencaitland, one of Scotland’s top studios. What followed was amazing … 3 single releases, 35 – 40 million video spins combined on MTV2 and Kerrang TV before the days of bots, airplay on 80 regional UK stations and then Draw were ‘Radio 1’s Session in Scotland ‘Live Band of the Year’ in 2002. Draw were then invited to be support band for legendary Arthur Lee and LOVE’s Forever Changes 2003 UK tour. A once in a lifetime opportunity for a tour that The Sunday Times described as ‘The UK Tour of the Decade’.

Following the LOVE tour, a few months later one of the Draw band members chose to embrace a lifestyle at the other extreme to that of rock’n’roll. Headline slot T-in-The-Park, and everything else in the pipeline (including forthcoming 'Alone Again Or' single release) was cancelled. The band and label subsequently tried evolving with other musicians, but things were never ever the same again.

CHAS is the only charity in Scotland that provides vital hospice services for children and young people with life-shortening conditions. CHAS offers care for the whole family in their two children’s hospices, Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch. They also run a homecare service called 'CHAS at Home' helping families in their own homes across Scotland when they need it most. CHAS currently supports over 300 families, as well as a significant number of families who receive bereavement support and their services are funded mainly through the generosity of our many supporters who help us to raise over £9 million needed each year to provide these hospice services.

The Fallen Angels Club in its 10th Anniversary Year is delighted to announce some stunning new shows with Jefferson Hamer & Kristin Andreassen; The Howlin Brothers and The Delines featuring Will Vlautin from Richmond Fontaine. The Fallen Angels Club was launched by promoter Kevin Morris and has played host to an array of Americana acts. The Club has promoted over 60 local and international artists from America, Ireland, England, Wales Canada, Germany and Italy – and of course Scotland. Up and coming local talent have been provided with their first live experience and the opportunity to perform with more established artists from other parts of the world. Over the years The Fallen Angels’ Club has worked with Regular Music, Glasgow's ABC and Soundsfine organisers of the Big Big Country and Big Big World Festivals. What others have said: “The Fallen Angels club has become a vital component in Glasgow’s live Americana music scene, presenting established masters of the storytelling song form and many of the flood of new artists who promise a great future for music rooted in the American soil. Here’s to a great future for the Fallen Angels, too.” Rob Adams The Glasgow Herald “Glasgow is lucky to have The Fallen Angels Club – a keeper of the flame of good roots music. Thanks for supporting Spit & Polish and so many other good artists” Francis Macdonald, Shoeshine Records / Spit & Polish “An excellent opportunity for both local and established acts.” Roddy Hart, singer, songwriter JEFFERSON HAMER & KRISTIN ANDREASSEN www.facebook.com/jeffersonhamermusic www.facebook.com/twistinkristin

GIGnotes: Saturday 20 September @ The Admiral Bar Glasgow. Tickets £12 from Tickets Scotland 0141 204 5151 Guitarist and singer Jefferson Hamer, co-recipient of a 2014 BBC2 Folk Award, and songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kristin Andreassen join together to showcase their newest original music after a spectacular year performing at the Newport Folk Festival, Royal Albert Hall, and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. They first met over a decade ago in Lyons, Colorado, where Kristin and her band Uncle Earl gathered to rehearse material for their award-winning album Waterloo, Tennessee, produced by Led Zep legend John Paul Jones. Jefferson lived next door, and he and Kristin sung country-style duets in the kitchen, finding common

ground in traditional music from both sides of the Atlantic. Kristin’s song writing earned her a feature on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion (with Jefferson as guitarist-in-tow) and her skills as a backing vocalist and instrumentalist were highlighted on recent UK tours with Jeffery Lewis and Aoife O’Donovan. Jefferson’s collaboration with songwriter Anais Mitchell brought widespread acclaim in both the USA and the UK, and their award winning album Child Ballads was named one of the 10 Best Folk albums of 2013 by NPR. Kristin’s new release Gondolier features Jefferson on guitar and harmony vocals, and she contributes vocal harmonies, keyboards, and foot percussion to Jefferson’s electric and acoustic guitar-driven songs. “A gifted guitarist and singer, Jefferson Hamer is able to hit close harmonies… and weave gorgeous instrumental lines.” Acoustic Guitar THE HOWLIN’ BROTHERS plus support www.facebook.com/HowlinBrothers

GIGnotes: Thursday 16 October @ The Admiral Bar Glasgow. Tickets £12 from Tickets Scotland 0141 204 5151 The Howlin’ Brothers had a very good year in 2013, following the release of HOWL, their first nationally and internationally released album. HOWL, featuring Warren Haynes (on one track, “Big Time”), brought instant success to the band. In one year they graced the cover of Acoustic Guitar magazine’s January 2014 issue; recorded in the legendary Sun Studio; were featured in a national PBS show (The Sun Sessions, which will broadcast throughout 2014 in more than 100 markets); shared the stage with Grammy® winner Ricky Skaggs; placed on over 17 end-of-year “best of” lists, and reached #6 on the Americana Music radio chart (was also #30 on that year-end chart, the highest charting

position by an act/artist new to the format last year). The trio toured their brand of “old-time string country blues with an indie-rock edge” throughout the U.S. and into Canada. The majority of the 13 original songs that comprise Trouble, were influenced by the people they met and struggles they encountered on the road over the past year. We would imagine we won’t see them play a venue this size on their next trip here. THE DELINES plus support www.facebook.com/thedelines

GIGnotes: Thursday 6 November @ The Voodoo Rooms Edinburgh. Tickets £14 from Tickets Scotland 0131 220 3234/Ripping Records 0131 226 7010 The Delines, a side project of Americana favourites, Richmond Fontaine, will make their Edinburgh later this year. After making their Glasgow debut during the Westend festival in June this year, we look forward to bring them back to these shores. Headed by vocalist, Amy Boone, the band’s debut album, “Colfax” comes out in April, with all songs written by RF frontman and now successful author, Willy Vlautin. He loves Amy’s voice, so much so he spent a year writing songs for her to record. The Delines line-up is certainly handy as it features, Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists) on keyboards, as well as fellow Portlanders drummer, Sean Oldham (RF), Vlautin himself and, on pedal steel, Tucker Jackson (Minus 5). Vlautin says the album is full of haunting, modern stories through “the musical lens of soul and roots music of decades past.”

“Boomerang” is a significant international cross-cultural collaboration as part of the Cultural Programme for the 2014 Commonwealth Games

Scottish Artists Breabach: The haunting strains of twin bagpipes have become a defining signature of Breabach – a chiming herald of Scottish folk being embraced by a new generation. Rehearsals for the Boomerang project were musically directed by Breabach’s own Calum MacCrimmon. A direct descendant of the ancient and legendary dynasty of MacCrimmon pipers from the Isle of Skye. New Zealand (Aotearoa) Artists Moana and TheTribe (One of the most successful indigenous NZ acts): Moana & the Tribe stand out as one of the most significant voices in Maori music. Their politically conscious grooves and distinctive Maori sound have taken them to some of the most exotic locations in the world. Horomona Horo (A master of pre-European Maori instruments): Composer, practitioner and cross genre collaborator, Horomona Horo has fused the traditional instruments of the Maori, taonga puoro (singing treasures), within a diverse range of cultural and musical forms.

Australian Artists Shellie Morris: One of Australia's finest indigenous, singer/songwriters, from Outback Australia to Vancouver Winter Olympics, London Olympics and Japan, receiving numerous awards along the way!! Casey Donovan: Casey has toured internationally with the original stage production “The Sapphires for” (Company B / Black Swan State Theatre Company), which she received the Best Actress Award at the 4th Deagu International Music Festival Awards in South Korea. Djakapurra Munyarryun: Djakapurra was born in Yirrkala as a member of the Wangurri clan of northeast Arnhem Land. He was raised with traditional dance and ceremony as an integral part of his life and as a teenager toured Australia with elders from Yirrkala, teaching and conducting traditional dance and music workshops. Peta Strachan: From the Dharug people of NSW. Peta began her dance training at the age of 13 with the Castlereigh School of Ballet. Artistic Director of the Janawi dancers she’s also a freelance dancer teaching and choreographing for young people in remote communities.

Boomerang will be giving a full performance at the “Festival 2014” concert, at the Living Room, Glasgow

Green, at 7.45pm, on Thursday, 24 July. Admission is free!!!

Boomerang represents the cultural version of a baton relay, thrown from Scotland and returning to its origin, all the stronger for its journey. This exciting project will feature Breabach (Scotland) and include Moana and the Tribe with Horomona Horo (New Zealand: Aotearoa) and Shellie Morris, Casey Donovan and traditional Aboriginal dancers and musicians from Australia. Celebrating the “Indigenous Commonwealth” Boomerang will explore links between Gaelic, Aboriginal and Maori cultures, through language, music and dance. Recent history unites these three nations with a close and deep bond, survival. Oppression of native language, music and dance has affected each one, largely due to the ruthless, and at times ignorant, progress of the modern world throughout the 18th – 20th centuries with these precious cultures viewed by many as a hindrance and threat. The outcome saw native languages being banned from schools, and in some cases music and dance outlawed by officials. Many of the stories and traditions performed in this brand new show can only be delivered by a handful of the tradition bearers we have left, yet the passion and purpose of this collaboration is not to mourn for the hardship of yesterday but to come together to celebrate and champion the survival and development of each country’s musical heritage,

highlighting it’s continuing relevance in the modern world. The clearances of 18th century Scotland formed another close connection between the groups with Horomona Horo, a Maori tradition bearer, and Shellie Morris of the Yanyuwa people from the Northern Territory of Australia having Scottish ancestry with the Macgregor and Muir Clans respectively. Boomerang represents a healthy and developing future for our indigenous languages and culture through the medium of song and dance infusing both traditional and contemporary art forms. Ancient bagpipe pieces weaving with a newly written Haka (traditional Maori posture dance), didgeridoo resonating through the stomp of a Gaelic waulking song and several new emotive pieces written specially for the project only begin to illustrate the depth and heart involved in this exhilarating modern showcase of traditional and contemporary world music and dance. Following a wonderful premiere at WOMAD New Zealand, Boomerang travelled onto the Homeground Festival at the Sydney Opera House which was equally successful and they will soon be performing in Glasgow.

Scottish Opera has joined with acclaimed author Alexander McCall Smith to produce a family opera that draws on musical talent from across the Commonwealth and across Glasgow as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. Over 100 performers will bring Anamchara – Songs of Friendship to life, with young professional singers, musicians and dancers from Scottish Opera, Calgary Opera, Cape Town Opera, New Zealand Opera and the India-based Yuva Ekta Foundation working alongside Scottish singers. The project will draw on volunteer

participants from Scottish Opera’s Connect Orchestra and Chorus and a community choir made up of children, students and adults from Commonwealth countries living and working in Glasgow. Four young people from Botswana, and their teacher, have also travelled here to join the Community Chorus. This has been organised by the British Council in Botswana and the Maitisong Festival. With words by acclaimed Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith, and music from composer Pippa Murphy, Anamchara – Songs of Friendship is a celebration of the ties that bind people together, whatever their age and wherever they make their home. Seven songs symbolise seven different kinds of friendship, from childhood affection, to teenagers in love to adulthood. The work is being co-directed by Martin O’Connor and Scottish Opera’s Emerging Artist Director Lissa Lorenzo. Scottish Opera’s Connect Orchestra play Pippa Murphy’s complex and emotive score, conducted by Chris Gray, while members of the Connect Chorus and Scottish Opera Emerging Artists Andrew McTaggart and Sarah Power take on lead singing roles.

Scottish Opera Director of Education and Outreach Jane Davidson said: “These are the “Friendly Games”, so right-away we knew we had to create something that really took that as its theme and made a huge asset out of it. I’m delighted with how this has come together. Being able to work with Alexander McCall Smith has been tremendous for us, but what has really helped make Anamchara something special is how the participants – professionals and volunteers from Glasgow and around the Commonwealth – have come together to make it work. “I’m also delighted that leading professionals from around the Commonwealth - including Australian born choreographer Janis Claxton and associate director Col Cseke from Calgary Opera – have been able to join our own talented leaders to build such an amazing creative team.” GIGnotes: Theatre Royal, Glasgow on Friday 25 July, 6.30pm / Saturday 26 July, 2.30pm & 6.30pm / Sunday 27 July, 2.30pm. Tickets are £6 each, with discounts available for family groups. www.scottishopera.org.uk https://twitter.com/ScottishOpera www.facebook.com/pages/Scottish-Opera/125673660782760

Scotland born folk singer-songwriter Colin Clyne, a versatile acoustic artist as comfortable spinning off an upbeat folk ditty as a heartrending dose of roots melancholy, returns this summer with an excellent album. 'The Never Ending Pageant’ was produced and engineered by Grammy award winning engineer Alan Sanderson (The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Ryan Adams, Burt Bacharach), and you can hear the first single from the album ' Merry Go Round' here: https://soundcloud.com/colinclyne/merry-go-round-1 The single, a straight, driving example of how to write an acoustic folk track with true momentum and subtle harmonies, mixes Clyne’s Scottish folk heritage with a touch of Americana in the vocal arrangements – thanks perhaps to 10 years spent living in California. The album and single are both released through Colin’s hometown label Fat Hippy Records, a burgeoning independent label who have also recently signed a deal with fellow Aberdonian –

and runner up on The Voice USA – Terry McDermott. It’s not difficult to see why his fans include influential new music tastemakers such as Jim Gellatly, John McRuvie, STV and Chris Hawkins of BBC 6 Music – the reflection of an impressive independent career that has seen Clyne support The Red Hot Chilli Pipers (internationally acclaimed Scottish touring band) at a Hogmanay gig in front of 6,000 people, as well as appearing at Belladrum Festival, Edinburgh Festival, The Viper Room in L.A, and the Sacramento Highland Games which boasts over 20,000 people. Another highlight saw him crowned ‘Best Acoustic Act’ at the San Diego Music Awards in 2011 and 2012 (previously winners include Jewel and Jason Mraz), as well as being named by NBC San Diego as one of San Diego’s top 12 Singer songwriters. That particular list contained an elite list of names, including Jewel, Tom Waits and the late Jim Croce. It marks an incredible career trajectory for an artist whose first cd was rehearsed and written in the cold store of a ship that he used to work in many years ago. In fact, the lifelong ship worker still does stints at sea from time to time, enjoying the time and space as good song writing inspiration. All very impressive from an artist who, having severed his fingers in his teens having hardly learned a chord, didn’t touch a guitar again until he was 23.

Rachel Sermanni is taking her Naked Ladies on tour. This Autumn the Folk-Noir balladeer will be on the road, again, with a new Live Album, recorded in the Yukon at the prestigious Dawson City Music festival, and a collection of her drawings - nudes and dreams - following their debut exhibition in Edinburgh in June. Rachel is 22. Has been singing her songs since leaving school at 17. Channelling spirits of all ages and archetypes. Weaving images of childhood, womanhood, of instinct and inhibition simply with the breath from her lungs, a hardy martin guitar and a bandolim called Sue. She's travelled all over, singing. Most recently Canada; touring back and forth with Rose Cousins, with her friend and label-sister, Mo Kenney, and solo. Australia for the famous Woodford Folk Festival; And across the UK and Ireland including sold out shows at Londons Union Chapel, and Glasgows Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum touring with friend and label-brother, Colin Macleod. On top of this, Rachel has supported many marvels including John Grant, Fink, Mumford and Sons, Ron Sexsmith and Elvis Costello. For this tour, Rachel will be joined by Jennifer Austin on the piano, Colin Macleod on the guitar (of course, he'll sing a couple of his beautiful songs too). There will hopefully be some unexpected guests along the way also. Here is Where and When the magic happens: October: Thurs 23rd The Tolbooth, Stirling; Sun 26th Eden Court, Inverness; Tues 28th Mareel, Lerwick; Thurs 30th The Old Fruit Market, Glasgow; November: Sat 1st Gardyne Theatre, Dundee; Sun 2nd Universal Hall, Findhorn; Wed 3rd The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen; Tue 18th Kings Place, London. Support will be from Miss Irenie Rose - Miss Irenie Rose is a young singer-songwriter from the Isle of Lewis; she has drawn comparisons to

classic voices like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, and has supported artists such as Ben Howard, Rachel Sermanni, John Smith and Rae Morris. She also recently reached the semi finals of the Radio 2 Young Folk Musician of the Year Awards and delivered standout performances at this year’s Celtic Connections. With a release scheduled for later this year, 2014 looks promising for one of the most exciting new additions to the Scottish folk scene.

DEATHCATS All Hail Deathcats Album vinyl Release Date: 9 June 'All Hail Deathcats' is the debut LP from Glasgow based trio, Deathcats.
