FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey Kia ora koutou Well, it’s been a controversial week. We understand that, from time to time, there are misunderstandings or miscommunication. We strongly encourage you to email, phone or to come in to talk with us. There are things that we do really well and there will always be things that we can improve on. But, we cannot critically reflect on our practice, nor make improvement, if we do not know about it. As a community, we encourage you to come in and talk with us face to face. If you feel that your concern has not been addressed in a timely and appropriate manner, please talk with the team leader or one of the senior leadership team. Social Dancing: Thank you to Melissa Nelson who responded to the Bay of Plenty Times reporter re Social Dancing. This was her response: “The Social Dance is for Year 8 students and is the much anticipated and enjoyed event for them at the end of the school year. It is held at Classic Flyers. The students dress up on the night; there is a DJ, lighting and supper. During the evening, there is a mixture of formal dances (that the students have learnt and practiced) and informal freestyle dances where they dance in their own way. The DJs make the announcements throughout the evening. For several months before hand, the students practice social dancing as part of our Health and PE programme. This involves learning the dance moves to several dances (waltz, line dancing, rock and roll) as well as some etiquette around the evening. On the evening, as each scheduled dance occurs, the students are asked in groups, to go and ask someone to dance. Sometimes it might be a house group to go and ask, it may be boys to go and ask, it may be girls. Students practice this process during rehearsals and have been encouraged to accept the invitation and then join in the dance. It is not a school expectation that students must accept an invitation. If they are uncomfortable about who has asked them, they are of course welcome to politely decline the invitation. I will be meeting with staff after school tonight to reiterate this and to ensure that consistent messages are given to students about accepting/declining an invitation. In my time at Mount Intermediate, having attended several Social Dance events, I have witnessed many examples of boys dancing with boys; and girls dancing with girls. We have no issue with this at all. In rehearsals, we practice asking a member of the opposite sex because, as I am sure you are aware, adolescence is a time of considerable change and we work hard on building positive relationships between all groups of students. This includes intentionally creating opportunities for boys to interact with girls and vice versa, in a positive, healthy way. Our Social Dance event is an event we are most proud of- and one that creates opportunities for students to step out of their comfort zones in a positive, fun and enjoyable way. The students feel a little anxious whilst practicing, but on the night, they absolutely love it. It is quite a sight to see, with 300+ students dancing together, knowing the moves, and mixing with each other throughout the evening. As I mentioned earlier, the night is a huge highlight for all involved. We have had loads of positive feedback from parents and students over the years, and this group is very much looking forward to the night. To my knowledge, we have not received any complaints about this night in the past. With regards to education around consent: Pubertal change, sexuality education, keeping ourselves safe, online bullying and consent are all part of the Health and Physical Education area of the New Zealand Curriculum. As a school that specialises in educating emerging adolescents, we make these topics a priority, every year, within

Page 3: MT MAUNGANUI 2019 INTERMEDIATE DECEMBER 2019€¦ · 4/12/2019  · 12 2 June 2017 IN THIS ... 29 JANUARY 2020 10AM – 1PM SCHOOL HALL (see flyer later in this newsletter about donating

our classroom programmes. The Life Education Trust classroom visits our school every year and supports these programmes as an addition to classroom learning. The consent you are referring to, is consenting to dance with someone who asks you in our Social Dancing setting. As part of our school curriculum, children are expected to work with different peers- be it in the classroom (for example in a reading group), on the sports field (for example in a class game of touch, or a team building activity at camp) and during social dance (for example dancing with a partner, in a congo line or in a group). We encourage our students to speak up if something is making them uncomfortable. In fact; we are a "Speak Out School". If any child feels unsafe or unusually uncomfortable about accepting an invitation to dance, they are of course able to politely decline. Finally, please consider my genuine invitation to attend our Social Dance on 12 December. We would love for you to come and see us in action, and for you to see for yourself what a positive, fun and worthwhile event it is.” After talking with our whole staff last night, it is clear that there has been a mismatch in some cases, between intended messages from teachers and how the messages have been received, by some students. We are glad that this issue has come to our attention so that we can check in on our processes as a staff. Adolescence is a challenging time for students and they often process information quickly and sometimes without thought for other perspectives. Research also tells us that they have a tendency to switch off after hearing part of a message, or possibly only a few key words of a message and don't always hear information in its entirety. Teachers too, can learn from feedback, such as what has been raised in this instance, and ensure that they are checking in about the messages they are giving, the thinking that sits behind them and how they are being interpreted or received by the students. To reiterate; students are encouraged to accept an invitation to dance at the social dance, but absolutely have the right to politely decline the invitation if they wish. This is all part of the self-managing we try to teach our students in all facets of school life. The Year 8 Social is a special event for students and staff to celebrate a wonderful two years at MMI. Teacher Registration Congratulations to Matua Tapuraka, Whaea Tara and Miss Smith who have all successfully completed their teacher registration after two years of teaching. We are very proud of you! MMI Promotion At MMI we are very proud of the fact that we develop our staff and we grow great leaders. Many of you may be aware Whaea Melissa Nelson has recently won the principal’s position at Bellevue School. Obviously, we are very sad to lose Whaea Melissa, but we are also very excited for her as she embarks on the next step in her career. We are so proud of you! We are very pleased to announce that Whaea Debbie Howell, our Mathematics Specialist Teacher, has recently been appointed to the Deputy Principal’s position. Congratulations Whaea Deb! We know that you bring an incredible skill set to lead learning for students and staff. Have a great positive week everyone. Mā te wa! Whaea Lisa

Dear Parents/Caregivers of School Leavers,

The Mount Maunganui Intermediate Year 8 ‘End of Year Leaving’ social evening is to be held at Classic Flyers on Thursday

12th of December.

We hold this successful event at Classic Flyers as they are able to accommodate the large number of students we currently

have in the Year 8 cohort.

The end of year social for the Year 8’s, is a celebration of the successful two years the students have had at Mount Maunganui

Intermediate. We encourage all our Year 8 students to attend this social occasion. Tickets to this event will cost $20.00 per

person. The evening will start at 7pm and conclude at 9pm. The ticket will cover the supper, the facility and hire of the DJ.

Chilled water and juice will be freely available.

At 9 pm, the conclusion of the social, we ask that parents collect their child from inside the facility. No students will be

allowed to leave Classic Flyers unless they are accompanied by an adult.

This year students have preferred to not have a theme, which will allow students freedom in choosing an appropriate outfit to

wear to the Year 8 Social. We encourage the students to wear formal dress.
