FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Kia ora koutou, It’s been a great week. After some reminders, early in the week, students have been settled and calm. So keep up the good work team. School Organisation for 2018 As communicated during the week, we are currently working on classes and school structure for next year. We have decided to keep some classes together, in consultation with parents and caregivers. This has been communicated to these classes already, with an overwhelmingly positive response. Due to uneven numbers in year 7 and 8, projected for next year, we are planning for one team of four composite classes. This will allow us to keep class sizes consistent across the school. The remaining separate year 7 and year 8 classes will be made up as usual, with careful consideration. There will be no boys only class in 2018. If you believe that your child will benefit from placement in our Whanau Class (bilingual education) with Matua Tapuraka Rikihana please contact us. It is our intention to inform students of their 2018 placement, before the end of the school year. This will support transition and dispel any anxiety or worry over the Christmas break. More information will follow. Staffing Changes At MMI, we believe strongly in growing and developing our teachers. Unfortunately, that does mean that we lose them to promotion and new opportunities. At the end of 2017 we will be saying farewell to the following staff:

We wish you all the best for future endeavours. The following staff will be on leave for 2018:

INTERNATIONAL HOMESTAYS REQUIRED

In February, we have two new students looking for homestay families for the first month of term one. If you may be interested in hosting one of these boys, could you please contact: Jane Howard International Student Director [email protected]

The “Blues” (embroidered badges), given out to students for following coastal values and in recognition of their sporting, community and academic achievement, cannot be replaced if the student loses or misplaces them. They are very expensive so please remind your child, if they receive one of these, to look after it, bring it home and have it sewn on their fleece, as soon as possible.

SPORTS INFORMATION

BOYS CLASS – GOLF FUN

This term, the boys’ only class have been learning the fundamentals of golf, as part of learning through the context of sport. On Tuesday, they went down to exhibit their skills at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club. Below are some pictures of the boys putting and driving. They really enjoyed this hands on learning experience.

SPORTS UNIFORMS

Could you please check at home and return all sports uniforms. Thank you.

Addressing the safety of local students in and around Bayfair Shopping Centres’ carparks

As the hub of the community and location of public transport services, Bayfair Shopping Centre is a busy thoroughfare for traffic coming in and out of the carpark areas. Recently, we have noticed an increasing number of students congregating in the centre’s car parks and in general, hanging around in high traffic areas, reserved for vehicles and in stairwells that access the upper level of the car park. This behaviour puts the students at risk and we have concerns for their safety in areas that are purely designed for parking and accessing vehicles. From our observations, students appear to be meeting friends and spending time in the carparks, as well as walking up and down the stairwells/ramps between the multilevel car-park and in some cases riding on skateboards and scooters. As I am sure you will agree it is not advisable for students to use these areas as recreation space. As the safety of everyone who visits our centre is of paramount importance, we are, contacting schools, neighbouring houses within our community, and relevant community leaders to ask that they assist with addressing these concerns and help us share this community safety message. We have proactively upgraded our car park signage to better identify the areas and their correct uses as well as increasing our security guard presence during busy times in the car parks such as after-school hours and school holidays. We would be grateful if you could support us and inform the students, at your school and perhaps include mention in your newsletter and assemblies. We also encourage anyone who sees unsafe behaviour or loitering in the centre’s carparks to inform centre staff immediately.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Richie Wellsbury Operations Manager|Bayfair Shopping Centre|AMP Capital Shopping Centres

MOUNT WINS NATIONAL PCT 8 Mount Intermediate students qualified to go to Wellington, to compete in the physical competency test and other challenges. We travelled down last Friday. We got to the PCT course at around 12:30pm on the Saturday and we were all pretty nervous. The team captain went up and drew the positions we would do the PCT course in. I went up and I drew 17, so we had some time to strategize. The Year 8s went first and set a very quick time of 2.17 just beating the other Mount team by one second (this was the fastest team on the day but, unfortunately had a 5 second penalty). Finally, it got to our turn and we started. The 2 year 7’s were in front and then the 2 year 8’s were behind. We came up to the beam and had to walk across. Finally we got some time to relax, when we were waiting for the others to finish it. We finished the beam and we sprinted over the jump. Now it was Gus and I at the front. We were all good at the scaling the wall, but I went back and helped the girls. We finished the wall and sprinted to drag the 70kg bag. The girls sprinted to the wire fence and quickly climbed over it and we all put our hands on the finishing cone. We finished at a time of 2:21. That night we went to the Wellington ‘Cake Tin’ to watch the Wellington Phoenix play. On the 2nd day we did 4 challenges. The first one was the 8 minutes to win it challenge, when we had to flip 5 cups, transfer 20 M&M’s into another plate by sucking with a straw, bouncing ping pong balls into a cup and

knocking 5 drink bottles over swinging a ball from a sack on your head. The second challenge was a memory challenge, where we had to go into a room and memorise the items in it. We got 21 out of 40 questions, about the items, correct. The 3rd challenge was where we had to put our foot on the numbers in a circle in the order of 1-20 and since Gus, and I had already done it at leadership camp we had a very good strategy. The last challenge was when we had to pour water into each other's cups from on top of our heads without using our hands. Finally, it was all over and it was prize giving. I was pretty disappointed when I didn’t hear our name called second or third, but suddenly I heard our name. We had come first!!! I was so proud of all the effort our team had put into this!!! Both teams competed well and had a great time. A huge thank you to Constable Sheryl and Kat, from Te Aranui Youth Trust, and Blair Johnstone, for accompanying and helping out the team throughout the weekend. The teams were Year 8 team - Devon Smith, Lucy Bartlett, Michael Kennedy, Steven Khoun Mixed team - Poppy Wilson, Olivia Hala, Gus Shivnan, Noah (Sharkie) Johnstone Written by Noah (Sharkie) Johnstone
