INTERNATIONAL REPORT

Host Families Needed

Please contact Jane Howard if you can assist - [email protected]

Thank you to the wonderful group of parents who have put their names forward to be hosts for our groups of international students, coming this year. No doubt you have seen in the media how important international education is to the local and national economy. Apart from experiencing school, the opportunity to experience New Zealand family life is valued by other cultures. We have short term and longer term groups coming in August and later in the year. I am also still looking for a host family for a long term student - until the end of the year. This girl is absolutely delightful - beautifully mannered, outgoing, sporty, musical and keen to learn. At the moment she is being hosted by a Korean family and is very happy, but her family would like her to be in an English speaking environment, to help her develop her English. She has younger siblings at home so is used to being with other family members. If you would like more information or can help, please get in touch with me. I have been approached to see if we can find host families for two boys (not together) for term 3. These boys are from Korea and in form 1/year 7. If they enjoy school, there is a possibility that they could become long term. And then we have our short stay groups. Hosting is generally a rewarding experience with many long term friendships formed. Why not try it? If you think you would like to give it a go or would like more information, please contact: Jane Howard [email protected]

Term 2 in Room 14 Camp poems

After camp we wrote poems concentrating on using our senses and descriptive language.

We used Marci Ridlon’s ‘That was Summer’ poem as a guide for our format.

That Was Camp

Remember the feeling of triumph when you successfully cleaned your room in time for breakfast,

still perplexed at how your room managed to get so messy?

That was camp.

Remember that first initial burst of fear in your heart going down the flying fox,

Remember how fear was replaced by pure adrenaline and joy as you swung further down the line,

the carabiners screeching against metal above you?

Remember the piercing cold that hit you like a truck when you fell out of your wobbly canoe,

and how your numb, dumb hands fumbled with the oar in panic, desperate not to drift away?

That was camp.

Remember the damp, dark rope you gripped hard throughout the

terrifying experience of the Burma trail?

Your hand digging into your friend's shoulder as the disgusting

stench of mud crawled into your nostrils?

Do you remember the crushing exhaustion you felt after those

thrilling days at Ngatuhoa, and how soft your blankets were as you

were tucked in?

And how, when drifting off to sleep, you remember thinking

“That was awesome”.

That was camp!

Sign language

Since two weeks ago it was sign language week Room 14 decided to learn the

alphabet in sign language. Then we decided to step it up even more! We have

learned the WHOLE National Anthem in English AND Maori in sign language to

present at assembly.

Science and Writing

We were learning how to write up a scientific report for our science fair so we did a science investigation

and learnt that through the process of osmosis we could bounce a raw egg. Osmosis is when the

molecules of a solvent (vinegar) pass through a semipermeable membrane (egg shell). The shell dissolved

in the acidic vinegar and we were left with a soft rubbery membrane. We then decided to see what would

happen if we put the newly formed ‘bouncing egg’ in a viscous substance (golden syrup) and discovered

that the liquid molecules could pass through the membrane of the egg into the golden syrup until the

concentration of water molecules was the same on

both sides.

Maths

For maths we are learning about statistics and how variables and outliers can

affect our data. To do this we made marble runs. We placed the ball at the top of the track 4 times, then 10

cm from the top 4 times, then 20 cm from the top 4 times, 80 cm from the to 4 times and finally 90 cm from

the top. We recorded how far the marble rolled when it exited the track. We then plotted our data on a

scatter graph and looked at what may have caused the outliers and variables. Here are some photos of our

marble runs.

Writing and PE

This term, room 14 has been teaching the class different winter sports! Before we started, we had to get

into groups and decide which sport we wanted to introduce to the class, next we all wrote a procedure plan

on what we will do, it had to include a warmup, training, and then a game.

Now all that's left to do is PLAY!

SPORTS INFORMATION [email protected]

Anchor AIMS Games

The Anchor AIMS games run from Sunday, 10th September to Friday, 15

th September. Mount Maunganui Intermediate will be entering a number of teams in this event (Please note that this is a National elite sporting competition and that we can only enter one team per code and we pick our best team in each code). There has a huge turnout of students who have been trialling for a team/s or an individual sport for AIMS. All of the AIMS teams or initial squads for teams will be named on Friday 2nd June. Please respect the decisions that have been made by a group of selectors who have been through a thorough selection process. It must also be remembered that teams are selected as joint year levels, not a Year 7 team and a Year 8 team. If an outside coach is been used we have ensured that a staff member from our school is part of the trial and selection process. The students were asked to list in preference their preferred choices of team sports. If a student trialled and was selected for more than one team they needed to make a choice which team they would commit to. Where possible these team selections have made before the cut-off date for those who may wish to enter as an individual if they miss team selection. Please note that due to potential time clashes that a student can ONLY play for one team sport. If your child would like to enter an event as an individual they should have brought home/ or been e mailed a newsletter outlining the cost of the event and cut-off date for the final payment. A list of those confirmed as individuals who would like to be considered for entry is below. As per the team codes there may be limited number of places available in some sports so the teacher In charge of the sport would need to make the final selection of students. If your child does not appear on the list (as of Wednesday 31st May), or should not be on the list could you please notify Troy Jennings as soon as possible. All individual entries SHOULD HAVE BEEN finalised by Friday 2nd June. If they have been selected in a team sport they will more than likely not be able to compete as an individual (Cross Country, Swimming, Multi Sport may be exceptions). Team sports have all finished trials (except Hip Hop and Aerobics). We will be entering teams in the following, Aerobics, Basketball (boys & girls), Football (boys & girls), Futsal (boys), Gymnastics, Hockey (mixed 6 a side team), Netball, Rugby 7s (boys & girls), and Water Polo (mixed open & girls). We are still determining whether we will be entering a Hip Hop team this year. This will be confirmed next week. If you would like to find out any extra information about any code in the AIMS games you can find out by visiting the web page http://nzaimsgames.co.nz/. Please contact Troy Jennings at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding the AIMS games.

ATTENTION ALL TEAMS!

Our hockey team recently played against Whakatane Intermediate and we received this fantastic message!!

Well done Mt Int Green Hockey!

“Just wanted to send through a message for the teacher in charge of hockey, as well as to the principal.

I refereed a hockey game against Whakatane Intermediate girls and the Mount Intermediate Green team on Friday night in the Tauranga Kwik Stick competition.

I have refereed for a number of years, and of all the teams I have refereed, the children from your school were an absolute standout!!! They were extremely polite, respectful and showed great sportsmanship, without losing their competitive nature, which is a key attribute to be a successful sports team. They are a credit to their parents, teachers and school and you should be very proud of them!

I would also like to mention that their coach and supporters were fantastic as well!

It was clear that all of the students had developed their amazing attitude from their parents, coach and teachers as it was evident from their sideline behaviour!

I look forward to refereeing them in the near future and wish them luck with the rest of the competition.

Kind regards

Teacher in charge of hockey at Whakatane Intermediate School”

ADDITIONAL MMI BAND, 2017

This will be a band with a special point of interest and expertise A special invitation is offered to musicians at MMI to audition with Mrs. Pearce to form a band with a specific purpose in mind. These musicians will be required to provide the music of two or three original songs, written by a student at our school, Emily Tattersall. I can see a great and unique opportunity for a band of competent musicians to surround her and become involved in Bandquest this year by entering in the ORIGINAL SONG COMPETITION. We will only enter two bands in 2017. 2017 Bandquest MMI entries will be: BAND 1 - Formed last year, as Year 7’s, and have worked to develop a high level of competence. BAND 2 - Emily as a singer /songwriter along with her accompanying band - original (additional band) song competition. The process to form this new additional band will be as follows: Call for interested musicians

a) This will happen with a meeting at lunchtime on Wednesday 31st May in room 23 (room

next to Art room), for students who can competently play the guitar, drums, bass guitar and keyboard.

b) At this meeting a notice will be given to all students who attend outlining when the auditions will take place. The notice will also outline behavior expectations and the level of commitment required. A complete calendar of practice times and events to date, will be attached.

SPONSORSHIP NEEDED

The PSG are a group of dedicated parents/caregivers from our school. They hold many

events throughout the year and often need prizes and funds to help them run successfully.

These events raise money to benefit all students in lots of different ways, often topping up

where such things are not covered by the Ministry of Education.

If you think you can support them in any way, whether it be by donating goods, services or

funds, please contact them directly. Any donations will be gratefully received. Perhaps you

run a business and can donate vouchers for services you can provide eg, Plumbers,

Builders, Hairdressers, Electricians and so many more.

We have a sponsor board on the front of our building. If your donation is to the value of

$500.00 or more we will add you to this board as a thank you for your generosity!

SAVE THE SCHOOL BUS PETITION

Dear Principals and Deputy Principals

My name is Karen Cowan. I am parent with 2 children at Aquinas College and I also commute to

work on the bus.

Like many people, my family and I do not support Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s proposal to

abolish the majority of school bus routes. As we need as much support as possible against this

proposal, I have set up an online petition and am seeking your help.

To gain as many signatures as possible, I am asking if you are willing to circulate the link to

this petition to all your students and parents, asking them to sign up to the petition to show their

disagreement to the proposed abolition of majority of the school buses. I think it is just as

important for the students, as well as parents, to have their say.

Here is the link to the petition:

https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/save-the-school-bus-

2/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=button

There is one question that I cannot work out the answer to:

How many students travel on the current school buses? As the students all travel roughly

the same time to and from school, how will the proposed public buses cope with all these

students and public at the same time? Whilst I understand the Council are proposing to

buy new buses, the current Bayhopper has only approximately 27-30 seats on

each bus (typically, from experience, there are 15-20 passengers on the current bus route

from Bethlehem to the CBD and vice versa). Some new routes (Route 1) have to serve a

few schools?

You may wish to ask Regional Council this question.

I look forward to receiving your response and hope, collectively, we will be able to save the

school buses in Tauranga.

Regards

Karen Cowan
