Life Education All classes will be visiting the Life Education classroom for three visits in the coming weeks. The cost of this programme is $7.50 per child. You can pay this through the office in the usual way. Today children and adolescents face a lot of challenges, including: obesity, substance use, mental health and well-being and bullying. The decisions we make as children can dramatically affect how we live our lives in the future – and this is why Life Education exists. Through education, Life Education can help students to understand how decisions they make today can affect their future health and well-being. As well as the three classroom sessions, the Life Education Programme provides follow up resources for teachers to use in the classroom. The Life Education programme compliments our inquiry learning for this term and is a valuable learning experience for our students. Mac, from the Life Education Trust arrived in our school this week. Playground Great progress was achieved over the holiday break. The basketball station, provided with funds raised by our PSG group, was erected and is proving to be very popular with our students. Thanks to Jeremy for his work on this project. A much needed cobbled area was completed between Rooms 13 and 19, and this has quickly become a nice sunny spot to hang out. Stage two in this area is to build more seating (thanks Mr Gillies-Smith) and look into some shade cover for the summer months. The grass area along the school-side of field was replaced with quality, readymade lawn strips. This has improved the sub-standard area, left on the field after the new classroom build, two years ago.

I have been pleased to see so many of our children remembering to wear their hats at break times this term. It is great to see them managing themselves and being prepared with what they need for school. The vast majority of students are wearing the correct footwear, which is pleasing. If you are not sure about what style of sandal is acceptable, please refer to my blurb in week 10 of last term. Congratulations to Mairead Pidgeon & Eden Leach who won silver at the NZ National Synchronised Swimming event over the holidays. What a fantastic achievement. You will read more about this in the newsletter. This term is an important one for our Year 8’s as we prepare them for College. If you have any questions or concerns about transition, please get in touch with your child’s teacher. We are here to help. If your child is feeling anxious, please encourage them to talk to their teacher as it is normal to feel a bit anxious about moving to a new school. Please be assured that all local secondary schools do a great job with transitioning year 9’s into college life. Have a great week everyone Ma te wa Whaea Melissa

UNIFORM

TERM 4 & TERM 1

Hats: As this term is a summer term, school hats are compulsory in the playground. Hats are

available for purchase at the office for $10 each. Footwear:

The uniform for summer footwear is black, school style sandals with a back strap/buckle. Traditionally, we have asked that roman sandals are worn, but we realise that some students

prefer more arch support. For this reason, we are allowing other types of school sandals to be worn. Scuffs are not acceptable. The sandal must have a black sole and be hard wearing and practical. Here are some examples of suitable footwear: If you are unsure, please pop in

and check at the office.

RITSUMEIKAN JHS STUDENTS HAVE ARRIVED!

Currently we are hosting a short term group of 20 delightful students from Hokkaido, Japan. They arrived last night after a long flight and three hour delay in Bangkok, very tired but looking forward to finding out more about us. I am sure they are going to be a great group, sporty, outgoing and very friendly. We have one last group from Kyoto, 26 November - 4 December (eight nights). I now need to find homestays for them. If you are interested please contact Jane Howard [email protected] to register or ask for more details.

4 MMI KIDS SELECTED TO REPRESENT WAIKATO/BOP

IN WEIR ROSE BOWL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

In the first weekend of the school holidays we had 4 MMI year 7 students selected to represent Waikato/BOP in the Weir Rose Bowl Football Tournament. Poppy Lane, Cate Ratcliffe and Isla Ganley, from TCAFC U12 Girls Black Mambas, were selected for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Girls team. Adisen Mahy from Blue Rovers U12 Federation Football Team was selected to represent the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Boys team.

Each year WaiBOP Football select teams made up from players who are 12 years of age to represent them at the Weir Rose Bowl Tournament. Players from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty go through a very competitive process of two identification camps/trials for WaiBOP Football to then make their final team selection for the prestigious Weir Rose Bowl tournament which is held annually. This tournament has been running for over 60 years and is recognised as being one of the best development tournaments available. Teams from Northern Football, Auckland Football and WaiBOP Football play against each other over a 3 day period held at St Peters School in Cambridge.
