FROM THE PRINCIPAL Melissa Nelson

Tena koutou katoa Our first full week at MMI has been a great one. Learning programmes are underway and everyone seems busy and happy. I’ve enjoyed walking through classes this week and chatting to some Year 7s about how they have settled in to the intermediate setting. It seems that most of our new students can now find their way around and have made new friends. This year, I encourage our Year 8 students to “step up”. They need to step up with their learning goals this year - setting goals that are aspirational, achievable and meaningful. They need to step up with their behaviour - we expect our year 8’s to lead by example and consistently show our school values, in and out of the classroom. Lastly, they need to step up with how they interact with others. I urge all year 8’s to meet and greet some new students and see if they can help them in any way. A friendly smile and a quick hello goes a long way to making new people feel more comfortable. Earlier today (Friday), our school tryathlon was held. It was fantastic to see so many students getting out there and giving it a go. I was particularly proud of those students who found it hard - I saw a few people showing real grit and determination as they carried on anyway, minus a bike chain, with the stitch, or with an injury. Perseverance is a valuable skill, so congratulations to all students who took part. Your house spirit was awesome and the weather was super kind to us. Thanks to all parents and whanau who came out to support their children. It was great to see you at school and we look forward to seeing more of you at coming events. Thank you to Troy Jennings and his team for the organisation around the tryathlon. I’m sure you all appreciate that organising events such as this, takes a considerable amount of organisation and we appreciate the time and effort put in to make it a success. Travel safe: We have had a few reports of concern around some students who bike to school and their use of the road, and cycle lanes on the footpaths. Please talk with your son/daughter about travelling safely and considerately on their way to and from school. With the huge volumes of traffic on Links Ave in the mornings, it is imperative that cyclists stick close to the left hand side of the road, wear their helmets and keep both wheels on the ground at all times. Emerging adolescents enjoy independence and the opportunities to manage themselves. You will notice that the expectations in these areas are raised here at MMI. We will work hard with your child during the year to foster these skills. Meeting deadlines, turning up for meetings and being trusted to work independently are all ways we help to prepare your children for secondary school. On that note, it was lovely to have a visit from Mount Maunganui College this week. Alastair Sinton and Ady van der Beek came to report that their Year 9 cohort have settled in beautifully and are a great group of young people, who were well prepared for college. This made us all feel very proud! Have a fantastic weekend everyone. Enjoy the sunshine. Ma te wa Melissa Nelson Acting Principal

2018 CAMP INFORMATION

This year, there have been some changes to the camps that classes will attend. This is due to our increasing roll and the difficulty of getting bookings in one place, for our large numbers. For some years, Year 8 students have attended a camp at Finlay Park, and the Year 7's have gone to Ngatuhoa Lodge. This year, camps are being held at Finlay Park, Ngatuhoa Lodge, Ngamuwahine Lodge and Taheke Marae. All camps meet our goals of offering fun, challenging activities outside of the classroom, encompassing personal challenges, team building and building resilience and confidence. All camps are well planned and the teaching teams have put a great deal of time into planning and preparation. Individual teachers will send more detailed information, including costs. All camp payments are to be made via Kindo. Moving forward, staff are working hard to secure bookings for 2019 that can cater for our large numbers. We are confident that all camps will be fantastic as usual and that the students will gain a great deal from the experience. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Nic Logan via the school office.

ICAS TESTING INFORMATION 2018

These are tests, sat by thousands of students throughout New Zealand, Australia and other Pacific Areas and administered out of Australia. Students sit the test on a designated day and we send the tests to Australia for marking. Results are sent back to us once the marking has been completed. All students in our school may enter any of the exams. A gentle reminder, the students in the Accelerate classes are expected to sit the English, Mathematics and Science papers. Other papers are optional. The subjects, costs and dates are as follows:

SUBJECT COST DATE Digital Technologies $9.50 8 May

Science $9.50 29 May Writing $20.50 13 June Spelling $11.50 14 June English $9.50 31 July

Mathematics $9.50 14 August All entries need to be completed on Kindo (see below) by Thursday 15th March, to enable us to complete the necessary paperwork. Please note, no late entries will be accepted. We will print the registrations from our payment system, so no forms need to be returned to school. Payments are to be made using our Kindo Online School payment system. We are using Kindo this year so no money comes through the school, it is all done online. Some primary schools already use Kindo, so if you have an account you can use the same one, you just go in and update the school. Go into the MMI School website, https://mtint.school.nz/ click on the green 'Payments and School Shop' link (If you are reading this via email you can click on the link below). It is easy to use and there is a tutorial on the 'Payments and School Shop' link.

Dear parents.

We are excited to be starting our gardening programme at Mount Maunganui Intermediate this year!

PiPS is an Incorporated Society that was established at the beginning of 2017 to facilitate garden programmes in schools in the catchment area of Mount Maunganui College. PiPS’ aim is to give the children of this community an opportunity for continuous learning about their food system and the local ecology throughout their school journey. We believe that by doing this children will have the confidence to make healthy food choices and be capable of growing and sharing food locally, and through understanding they will naturally take more care of their local and global environment.

PiPS ethos is to garden by organic principals avoiding use of chemical weed killers and fertilisers. The focus is on working with our natural ecosystems, and for the children to gain an understanding of the way the natural world works using discovery-based investigation and experimentation.

We will be starting a garden programme at Mount Maunganui Intermediate which will run in enrichment time on Friday mornings. We will also be facilitating special projects that students and the school community decide on throughout the year, and over time will be integrating the garden programme with the Food Technology programme.

How can you be involved?

If you are a passionate gardener - or if you think you are a terrible gardener and would like to come on this learning journey with us - then please email or phone me to see what’s involved and to sign up as a volunteer for the Friday morning sessions. Clare Rodgers [email protected] Clare: 0212076016.

We are also keen to connect with parents who may have specific skills, resources and connections that would support special garden projects throughout the year, and every now and then we may give a shout out to help us out in a working bee! Please also contact me if we can call on you.

Lastly, we have a committee who help to set the direction of what we want to achieve across all our Mount Schools, and we would like to have a parent member to represent Mount Maunganui Intermediate. If this would suit you please get in touch. (We are a pretty relaxed team of keen gardeners who are passionate about kids, food and the planet).

We have a website which will have a special blog page for Mount Intermediate, where we will keep weekly updates and photos of what the kids are doing. You can see what our other member schools have achieved in their gardens last year by looking at their blogs her - www.pipsbop.org.

So, welcome to the start of the journey, we’re really excited to be working with such an awesome school and school community and we can’t wait to meet you all and get our spades in the ground!

NETBALL INFORMATION

Mount Maunganui Intermediate 2018 Dear Parents/Caregivers

Your child has expressed an interest in playing netball for Mount Maunganui Intermediate in 2018. Our trials will begin

this month in order to get teams ready for the start date early next term. The fees this year for netball will be

approximately $90.00 per player (This still needs to be confirmed with Harbourside’s Fees). This will cover

Harbourside costs, subscription to Waikato/BOP Zone and assist us in maintaining our netball equipment. Umpires are

not included in this cost. We will aim to provide teams with parent volunteer umpires, however if we are unable to locate

a volunteer umpire, paid umpires will become an added responsibility for the team.

Payment for this fee must be paid no later than Friday 13th April via Kindo. We will not be able to distribute uniforms

until these fees have been paid. Please contact us directly or the school office if you have any concerns regarding this

payment. We are using Kindo this year so no money comes through the school, it is all done online. Some primary

schools already use Kindo, so if you have an account you can use the same one, you just go in and update the school.

Go into the MMI School website, https://mtint.school.nz/ click on the green 'Payments and School Shop' link (If you

are reading this via email you can click on the link below). It is easy to use and there is a tutorial on the Payments and

School Shop' link.

Kindo payment link

Mount Maunganui Intermediate Netball is also currently looking for parents interested in coaching, umpiring and/or

managing a team. With all sporting organizations, parent and caregiver support is paramount in the success of the sport

whether this is for competitive reasons or non-competitive. Teams will not be registered if we cannot locate a coach,

manager and umpire to support the team.

All trials are being held at Mount Maunganui Intermediate Netball Courts Important Dates 20th and 21st Year 7 Skills Session at lunchtime (Tuesday and Wednesday) 28th Year 7 Trial 1: 3.15 - 5pm (Wednesday) March 6th Year 7 Trial 2: 3.15 - 5pm (Tuesday) 13th and 15th Year 8 Skills Session at lunchtime (Tuesday and Thursday) 22th Year 8 Trial 1: 3.15 - 5pm (Thursday) 28nd Year 8 Trial 1: 3.15 - 5pm (Wednesday) 29th Deadline: Payment of Fees

Please note that all trials are held after school and are ‘closed’ sessions. We ask that during these trials parents are not present and that you only arrive to collect your child at the conclusion of the trial. Skills sessions will take place during lunchtimes. All students must wear their P E uniform, correct Netball shoes and bring a drink bottle.

It is important students make the trials available for their year group. Please go to the www.mtint.school.nz to register.

(Click on the sports page, then go onto the Netball page, click on the link at the top). There will be computers

available at the information evening to complete registration. If for some reason you are unable to access the online

registration form please see us for a paper copy.

If you have any questions or queries regarding any of the information above please do not hesitate to contact one of the

coordinators listed below.

Mount Maunganui Intermediate has a long history of being an exceptional netball school. We look forward to a

successful season with your child whether this is competitive and/or to have lots of fun.

MMI PARENT SUPPORT GROUP (PSG)

Calling all parent helpers!! What is it? The Parent School Support (PSG) group, led by parent volunteers, is there for the benefit of all the children attending MMI and the school itself.

This group needs your help to be able to continue supporting the school and its students.

What does it do? It raises funds that contribute to items that the children and the school would likely, otherwise, not get the benefit of. Examples of these items last year are: 4 large Apple TVs, house signs and large flags (used at sporting events, productions etc), hardship fund for those in need, Year 8 Social, equipment for classrooms, bean bags & books for the library, the list goes on.

We raise these funds by running events, sausage sizzles, bake sales, the uniform sale, the canteen, school discos etc.

How can you help and what is your commitment? Your commitment is whatever you are able to give, no expectation! You can help by coming along to the meetings (when you can, no

commitment, we know how busy life is….). Sign up to our email list so you can be notified when we need help for

events etc (you don’t have to come to meetings to receive emails). Offer any services/skills you or your business may have. Help with our canteen roster on Wednesday and Friday mornings 8am

to 9.30am. Just help out where you can! All help appreciated!!

However big or small your availability, please email [email protected] to register your interest and sign up for our info emails.

Our next meeting: Wednesday March 14th @ 7pm

In the Staffroom Wine and Cheese Provided!!

Please come along, meet some new faces and help to make this a fun year supporting the school!

Erika & Jacqui
