FROM THE PRINCIPAL Nihao, Ayong Haseo, Kia ora koutou, warmest greetings, You may or may not be aware, but Mrs Howard and I have been marketing our school in China (Guangzhou), and South Korea (Seoul and Busan) with Education Tauranga, a number of Tauranga schools and principals and Tauranga's Korean Times. We were away for twelve days and we were very privileged to travel, see sites and to learn about the history and culture of our beautiful international families. It was a busy schedule, but a wonderful experience. We currently have ten international students from China and Korea attending MMI. In 2017 we have eight students planning to come already. NZCT AIMS Games: Aue! Oh my goodness. I was tracking our performances from afar. I think this must be Mount Maunganui Intermediate School's best performance so far! 18 official medals (swimming had more individual’s medals, but were counted differently), 5th on the medal table, school best finishes ever and a number of students selected for tournament teams. As discussed with the students prior, the goal was not about winning! The students were asked to focus on doing their very best. They were asked to make themselves proud, MMI proud, Mum and Dad proud and of course me proud. The students exhibited their coastal values respect/whakaute, pride/whakahii and akonga/learner in all contexts. I think the amount of media coverage was testament to how well our students represented themselves and their school. Yes team, I was very proud! Paid Union Meeting: On Wednesday, for the first time ever, primary and secondary teachers, support staff, special education and early childhood staff attended a combined paid union meeting. I thank you for your patience in allowing the late start to school. As a school we legally have to enable staff to attend a paid union meeting when it is called. However, attendance at this meeting was particularly important because the proposed government changes to school funding and staffing have raised considerable concern across the profession. Those of you who have been on Boards of Trustees will understand that school funding and staffing is particularly tight and it seems that there is never enough resourcing. Parent donations, sourcing alternative revenue streams and applying for grants are ways in which schools try to balance the books. The Ministry of Education has proposed changes to the way in which schools are funded. The unions are arguing for better funding, not bulk funding. I have included snippets from the Bay of Plenty times article below as I thought it explained the key issues concerning schools in a more parent friendly way.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/bay-of-plenty-times/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503343&objectid=11709500

"The Bay's teaching community has come together in an historic move against proposed changes to funding, with extra seating needed at ASB Arena this morning. Thousands packed the arena at 9am today to attend a joint meeting between the education sector's biggest unions. There are fears a Government-proposed ''global budget'' could mean parents on Boards of Trustees would have to make trade-offs between the number of teachers they employed and other non-teaching costs of running a school. There are also concerns the proposed funding system, often referred at the meeting as bulk funding, would lead to the increased casualisation of teacher jobs and pressure to hire cheaper, less experienced teachers, undermining the quality of teaching. Ms Tinetti (Principal of Merivale School) said if the proposed changes went through, it would have the single biggest negative impact on public education. ''We are protecting the interests of the children. We are professionals. We have a very good understanding of what will be good for our children. This is not about us. It's about what we can put in place to ensure our children have quality education.''

Last thoughts: Good luck to Dance NZ Made students girls competing at the Nationals, this weekend. Have a great week team, so so proud of you all! Ma te wa

THANK YOU TO THE PARENT SUPPORT GROUP

Thank you so much to the Parent Support Group

for all your fundraising efforts. We have managed

to replace our very old sick bay beds with these

lovely new, electronic treatment tables. This will

help when treating your children as it will be a lot

easier and safer for them as we can lower the beds

closer to the floor if they are a fall risk and raise the

bed so our caring staff can treat them and save

their own backs!

AIMS GAMES REPORTS

AIMS GAMES INDOOR BOWLS

The team members who took part in this year’s AIMS Games Indoor Bowls tournament were: Front row from left: Ben Davies, Junhyuk Yun, Cooper McKay, Matthew Adlam, Angus Goodwin, Simon Wagstaff, Beth Simpson (middle) Ryan Daelemans, Daniel Whyte, Ethan Settle. Back row from left: Hannah Cross, Sophie Ruddell, Stephanie Price, Mia Johanson, Morgan McKay, Savanna Svebakk-Bohn, Olivia Marlowe, Roman Vincent, Kaden Adlington, Joe Hoskins.

9 single players qualified for post section play by winning 3 or 4 games. This is a big achievement in itself. They were Matthew, Stephanie, Sophie, Junhyuk (all with 4 wins) Angus, Kaden, Mia, Olivia, Copper (3 wins). In total, 88 players qualified in the singles. Our best post section player was Junhyuk, who made the last 32 players. In the Pairs, 46 teams qualified for post section play. 5 of our Pairs qualified: Stephanie & Sophie (last 8 – quarter final), Matthew & Angus (last 16), Kaden & Cooper (last 32), Olivia & Jun, Daniel & Ryan. Congratulations, an awesome effort from you all. Many games, in both Singles and Pairs, were lost on a deciding end or by having to measure the closest two bowls. Our tournament took place in a new venue this year, the Baypark Stadium Lounge. The floor made for some very interesting games as bowls on some mats rolled in all directions. This was very disheartening for those who played on these mats. Many of our team members were new players this year. They attended school practices and the local Junior Club from March to develop their knowledge of the game. They were very supportive of each other and worked hard to learn the mats as the tournament progressed. Many friendships were rekindled from last year or new ones made amongst the students from throughout NZ. They were a great group to work with and take out of the school. Thank you to the very supportive parents and grandparents. Your transport, help and support was very much appreciated. M Taylor TIC of Indoor Bowls

AIMS GIRLS RUGBY 7’S The MMI girl’s rugby 7s team was made up of 12 players - six year 8s and six year 7s. We had only one girl in the team who actually plays rugby. Last week we played ten games in total - losing 4 and winning 6. Overall we won the plate section and were placed 9th. The girls played with great determination. Their confidence and skills improved with every game every day. The support and encouragement the team displayed towards one another both on the field and off was one of the highlights of the week. Another highlight was having a team member selected in the tournament team - this is a team of 12 of the best players recognised for their skills and talent during the week. A huge congratulations to the MMI Girls 7s team and also to Mya Bennett who made the tournament team.

AIMS CROSS COUNTRY On Sunday last week a group of Mount Intermediate kids competed in the AIMS Cross country at Waipuna Park. It was a very hard, fast run. At AIMS there was very high competition as there were over 700 competitors. Everyone tried their best and we had some amazing results. We had to run 2.95 km. Lucy Bartlett had an amazing run and came out with the big gold medal. We were also very proud as our year 7 girl’s team of Lucy, Poppy Wilson, and Leah Collins who came overall 3rd place. Every year the competition gets better and the times get faster! The fastest time was run by the year 7 boys with a time of 9:56. Many Records were broken during this day! Everyone did an amazing job are we all very pleased with our results. By Lucia Cook and Lucy Bartlett

AIMS WATER POLO

OPEN REPORT After five days of AIMS water polo competition the MMI mixed team won SILVER coming 2nd out of 22 teams who travelled from around New Zealand. The competition was intense! After coming top of their pool MMI had tight games in their quarter finals against St Peters and then their Semi-final against Glen Eden. They managed to win both these games by just one goal which secured them a spot in the final against St Kentigern Boys School. This final was a repeat of the Winterfest final that had happened just weeks before where MMI had come home with a GOLD beating St Kent’s 7-3. This time it was St Kent’s turn and they played hard beating MMI 7-4. Although not the result the team had gone out to achieve, it was a huge success. As a team they conducted themselves with MMI pride throughout AIMS and were respectful of one another and their competitors. Together they scored over 80 goals across their 10 games and each player managed to slot the ball in the back of the goal at least once – even the goalie! Tournament team awards were given to Cooper Gibson and Ella Rutten who along with the other year 8 students (James Kramer-Pickering, Matthew Wagstaff, Lana Beck and Liam Davoren) provided a strong backbone for the team. MMI will perform at North Islands Intermediate School’s tournament in October where they are sure to be medal winning favourites again!!

Open Water Polo Team: Charlie Bury, Jack Jones, Lana Beck, Gus Shivnan, Matt Anderson, Ella Rutten, James Kramer-Piuckering, Cooper Gibson, Liam Davoren, Ethan Carrington, Matthew Wagstaff

Girls Water Polo team:

Maya Carr-Manoit, Ellie Thompson, Kasha Stokes, Ruby Helm, Parker Thomas, Quinn Farley, Grace Akroyd, Greer Anderson, Mia Thompson, Lucy Sandford

GIRL’S REPORT The MMI girl’s water polo team played 9 games over the 5 days of AIMS. They started with a tightly fought game against St Cuthbert’s, which they eventually won and this set them up for a challenging but great week as a team. They went on to improve with every game and had some very good results for quite a new team, eventually placing 5th with four strong wins. We are very lucky to have an amazing and supportive and highly skilled coach in Shinae Carrington. She has taught the girls so much in a short space of time and we are very grateful to her commitment to our team. These girls had never even been in a pool together before July and there were some that had very limited water polo experience, so it needs to be said they have shown great commitment to training, upskilling and teamwork and above all team-ship to achieve some great game results at both Winterfest and AIMS. They always get out of the water smiling, determined and wanting to improve and keep playing (despite some real hammerings!) while remaining supportive and encouraging of each other both poolside and in the water. We are excited to see how they go at North Islands in 6 weeks’ time

Also a huge thanks to Karen Wagstaff and Helen Helm who volunteered to officiate (IOT) for both nights. By Gus Shivnan

Below is the start of an article in the Bay of Plenty Times which was printed on Monday 12 September 2016. Well done to Zyleika Pratt-Smith!! “Zyleika Pratt-Smith is unlikely to forget five days in the pool last week. The 12-year-old from the Papamoa Swimming Club and Mount Maunganui Intermediate was the shining light in her age group at the Bay Short Course Championships and AIMS Games held at Baywave. Zyleika broke five Bay of Plenty records at last weekend's short course champs in 100m IM (individual medley), 50m and 100m Breaststroke and 50m and 100m Backstroke in winning five gold medals. AIMS SQUASH

Andrew Murray and myself, (Hayden Collier) represented Mt Intermediate in Squash for AIMS Games. We both got 6 games. Everyone was guaranteed at least 1 game on a full glass court, which usually, only professionals play on. I was lucky enough to play 2 games on it. It had a very different bounce because it was a double dot white ball, which doesn’t bounce as much as we’re used to. It was a very great experience though. I started at 29th seed and Andrew started at 53rd seed. There was a total of 62 boys competing in squash this year.

Both Andrew and I had very tough competition. It was a very hard and exciting week and we were both exhausted afterwards. Andrew ended up getting 41st and I ended up getting 27th. Andrew had 4 wins and 2 losses and I had 3 wins and 3 losses. So overall, a very hard, but fun week filled with wins and losses.

AIMS CHEERLEADING

AIMS GOLF

There were many different sporting activities that many talented students aged from 11 to 13 years old competed in the 2016 AIMS games. The one activity that I found most mental-straining was golf. On the first day of golf, every competitor went to the Omokoroa Golf Club early in the morning. We got to meet everyone else while practicing and getting prepared for a long round of golf. The golf manager called out the names of the people playing together, and I was 3rd to last. Because it was the first round, I made some mistakes, but I did play quite consistent afterwards, leaving me with the score of 35 for Stableford. I went to the Te Puke golf course the next day. I didn’t do very well that day and so I was coming 4th for Stableford. However, on the 3rd day, I played very well, had 3 pars which left me a score of 2 under my handicap. I was coming 1st by 3 points and so I thought the gold medal was reachable this year. On the last day, I played at the Mount golf course which was my home club. This was my chance. Gold wasn’t far away. I played pretty bad on that day and I had to give up getting the gold, however when I looked at the score, most people did quite badly, and I thought I could get at least a bronze or a silver medal. But when I got Gold, I was happy because all my hard work, practicing at least 3 time a week after school and both Saturday and Sunday. I was very proud of myself and so was everyone else. I thought this was a huge improvement from last year where I came 2nd to last. I have made a lot of good memories and will never forget this opportunity

BILINGUAL PROGRAMME 2017

AIMS MULTI SPORT

There were many activities in the 2016 AIMS games, but what I think was the most challenging was the multi sport. Even though the entire course was just over 5km, as you do the race your lungs scream at you to stop and your body goes weak as you push yourself to keep going. You start with a 2km sprint which takes you up a challenging hill then loops back around past the lake. Then you move onto the mountain bike leg which, although relatively short, is a very technical course with a lot of uphill climbs. The final downhill into the transition area proved to be the undoing of many competitors and is not for scaredy-cats!! The final leg is a 1km kayak which I enjoyed the most, due to my canoe slalom training, but which others found was a lot harder than they thought it would be.

MMI had 13 students competing in the multi sport and everyone did extremely well. We got 3 medals- Jared Lord, silver in year 7 individual, Jared Lord and Thomas Crockford , bronze in year 7 team honours and Emma Lord and myself received bronze in the year 8 girls team honours. Our mixed team of Alex Thomson, Jared and Thomas did an incredible job, but were unlucky not to get a medal - coming 4th!

It was fantastic day!

Our Multisport team

Are there any Year 7 students who would be interested in transferring into our bilingual class next year? We need to increase numbers to make Manaakitanga is a core value in our class, which we live and learn by. Our bilingual unit offers our students a place to belong and excel. Our programme is designed to extend our tamariki in their reading, writing and maths while deepening their knowledge and skill in Te Reo me ona tikanga. You do not need have been part of a bilingual class in the past to be part of this kaupapa. To join our class you simply need to have a passion to learn Te Reo Maori and a commitment to the kaupapa of the class. Please contact the school office if you are interested in this option for next year.

WELL DONE TO

COMMUNITY NOTICES

The NZAME (New Zealand Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Inc.) is holding a 3-day exhibition “Celebrating the 1940’s” at Labour Weekend. A biennial event, this is the first time the exhibition has

been held in the Bay of Plenty. There will be displays of dolls houses, room settings and various other items crafted to scale. The last such exhibition was in Nelson in 2014, and was very popular with school children. Ours is a not-for-profit organisation and we rely heavily on schools to help spread the word about our exhibition. If you could mention it in your end-of-term or start-of-term newsletter, we would be most grateful. I have attached a flyer which may be useful. Show details:
