Reflections on the
Cover Page
The original Marathi article of Shri Shreedhar Parab
published under the column ‘Mukhaprushtha
Pahatana’ in Yoga Varta's issue for the month of
November 2013 has been excellently translated into
English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's Yoga Teacher of
39th batch of YTTC). The said English version of Shri
Shreedhar Parab's article in Marathi is being
published hereunder with profound thanks to Shri
Nitin Tawde (Mob. : 9819186655).
Moment the picture of imposing windmill was
seen on the cover page of the Yoga Varta, many
interesting facts about this nature-friendly machine
using wind for generating electricity got unfolded in
the mind. A windmill is a beautiful, elegant structure
that converts the energy of wind into rotational
energy by means of adjustable blades. Windmills have
been used since 2000 B.C. and were first developed in
Persia and China. The windmill was orginally made for milling grain and
drawing water. Later on they have been used for many other purposes
like grainding grain or spices, pumping water and sawing wood. Modern
wind power machines are used to create electricity. These are called
wind turbines. Wind turbines operate on a simple principle - the energy
in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around the rotor.
The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to
create electricity.
While these thoughts were churning in mind, the attention was
drawn at the sentence, “Air : The basic element that enlivens, moves
Yoga Varta : April 2017 6
`moJdmVm©
and…..” printed on the cover page and the mind started recounting how
much important the Vayu Tatva is in our life. Just see, man can survive
for few days without water and even for a much longer time without
food. But without air which is comprised of the most essential oxygen
for life, along with nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour, man will
die in few minutes. Without the help of carbon dioxide in the air, plants
will not be able to produce their food. We need to take food 3 to 4
times and need to drink water for 5 to 7 times in a day. But the intake
of air is continuously going on for 24 hours consciously as well as
unconsciously. It is just impossible to live without air. That's the reason
our respiratory system is continuously working with perfect neuro-
muscular coordination of more than hundred muscles. How thoughtfully
God has designed our nostrils so that the temperature of the air
entering inside matches with that of our body and also restrict the entry
of dirt or dust particles which can cause damage to the delicate alveoli
in lungs and thereby upset the process of respiration. If we notice, the
entry of both the nostrils are downwards towards the ground. So the air
doesn't enter directly even if there is a strong wind. The nasal passage
is narrow and somewhat curved. Therefore, the air that enters becomes
slightly warmer. The hair and mucous present in the nasal passage help
arresting the dirt and the dust particles in the inhaled air. When the
oxygen thus inhaled comes in contact with the impure blood vessels in
the lungs, the very important process of the purification of blood is
initiated. Hence it is realised, how important the air is, that enters
through our nostrils. Nature has taken care to see that the supply of this
Vayu which is the most essential for life, is made available in the best
possible unadulterated form and that too in abundance.
Earth is surrounded by atmosphere up to 100 kilometres which
consists of five layers. It is due to the gravitational force of the earth,
this atmosphere is held in its place and performs at its best.
'Troposphere' is the first layer closest to earth and heaviest of all. The
next i.e. the second layer is called 'Stratosphere' which contains the
7 Yoga Varta : April 2017
`moJdmVm©
most essential Ozone. This ozone remarkably reduces the intensity of
the harmful ‘ultraviolet’ rays of sun and thereby we are benefitted by
the health promoting sun rays. The ultraviolet rays are responsible for
causing skin cancers, ophthalmic diseases, reduction in immune powers,
etc. and the existence of ozone layer protects us from many such health
related disorders. The third and the fourth layer of atmosphere are
called ‘Mesosphere’ and ‘Thermosphere’ respectively. ‘Exosphere’ is the
lightest and farthest from the earth which is the fifth and last layer of
the atmosphere.
It is observed that this important element Vayu Tatva, amongst the
Panchamahabhutas is responsible for many useful works when it is in
balanced state by itself and in harmony with rest of the Mahabhutas viz.
Akash, Agni, Jala and Prithvi. Wind kindles fire. Any object can remain
steady because of the pressure exerted by air in all directions. CNG i .e.
Compressed Natural Gas is used as fuel for vehicles. In sport like
football, volleyball, the balls are inflated with air and the cars can run
speedily on road with the inflated tyres. When the air is blown through
mouth in musical instruments like flute or shehanai, enchanting magic
of melodies is created. It is the air only that gives us the pleasure of kite
flying or keeps the balloons floating in the sky.
This basic element ‘Vayu’ i.e. air is assimilative, subtle and directive
too. Water is easily miscible and acquires the colour with which it gets
mixed. The same is applicable to Vayu Tatva also. Yoga means to unite.
In this context, Vayu is ‘Yogavahi’. It merges very easily with whatever it
gets in contact with. In icy terrains like 'Kedarnath', Vayu becomes cold
in the company of ice. The same Vayu scorches our skin when it comes
in contact with hot sands in ‘Rann of Kutchh’, while the same Vayu near
the seashore becomes slightly humid with the moisture prevailing
thereat. Due to its assimilative (Yogavahi) property, it brings along with
it the scent of flowers coming in its way or even the foul smell from the
dump. This same assimilative property is very effectively used in 'Aroma
Therapy' where many psychosomatic ailments are treated successfully.
Yoga Varta : April 2017 8
`moJdmVm©
Another attribute of Vayu is its subtlety. Wherever there is a vacuum,
how so ever minute the place may be, air occupies it. This is the reason
air is present everywhere and it can move around anywhere. Air
because of its property of miscibility gets polluted quickly. The entire air
gets polluted when the pure air is adulterated with the vehicular
emissions, contaminants from e-waste, the toxic air released by the
industries and factories, etc. Such air proves harmful for plants and
living beings. The third attribute of Vayu is its 'directive' power. When
the air flows with velocity, we call it wind. Vayu gives directions to
others, accelerates and affects all in good or bad ways. Vayu decides the
course and direction of clouds in the sky. Vayu shows the direction and
helps in navigation of ships. The sailing ships move only with the help
of wind on the sea. In many countries, electricity is generated by using
the windmills. It is the Vayu only that provides energy to the windmills.
'Touch' is the specific attribute or 'Tanmatra' of the Vayu Tatva. Even
if we can't see Vayu, we can feel just by the touch of it, whether it is hot
or cold, pleasant or unpleasant. Air as such doesn't have any shape of
its own. It acquires the shape of the place that it occupies. Air is very
unstable but at times it blows with a very high speed. While describing
the enormous speed of flight of Lord Hanumana, in an aphorism in
Ramaraksha, it has been narrated as "_ZmoOd§ _méVVwë`doJ_²&' From this,
it implies that like mind which is very unstable and which can travel
from one place to a very far destination in a fraction of a second, Vayu
too is very unstable and speedy Tatva amongst the Panchmahabhutas.
Actually speaking, the Panchmahabhutas from the Nature namely
Prithvi, Jala, Agni, Vayu and Akash are like five sacred Gods. These five
basic elements are nothing but the forms manifested with specific
attributes, giving us the experience of the ‘attributeless’ and ‘formless’
Supreme Reality which otherwise can not be experienced with our sense
organs. All these five basic elements are of immense importance in plant
and animal life. Unfortunately all of them are adulterated by various
types of pollutions. Especially, Vayu and Jala are the most polluted ones
9 Yoga Varta : April 2017
`moJdmVm©
and are rapidly losing their pure, sacred and divine form due to the
selfish and thoughtless acts of man. Environment is drastically losing its
balance. The natural calamities like cyclone are actually the cautionary
warnings given by the nature to the human beings of the environmental
changes, global warming as also of the adverse effects caused by the
increasing e-waste. Strictly adhering to the laws of nature will be the
most effective measure to change the present deteriorating state. We
say that “All animals and plants are our near and dear ones” but the
question is that do we really behave accordingly? This dreadful situation
can be controlled to some extent if everyone amongst us realises from
within, that exploiting the nature for our selfish motives under the
name of so called development is not ultimately in the interest of
humankind.
The ‘Dasha Pranas’ in human body are indications of Vayu Tatva.
These Vayus are recognized with distinctive names such as Udana, Prana,
Samana, Apana, Vyana which connotes their predominant activities and
specific area of operation. Indian sages and Yoga exponents have done
thoroughly deep thinking about the ‘Pranamaya Kosha’ of human beings
which is composed of ‘Dasha Pranas’, that are the five main ‘Pancha
Pranas’ (Pramukha Pranas) stated above and the five sub Pranas (Upa
Pranas) namely Naga, Kurma, Krikala, Devdutta and Dhananjaya. The
very effective science of Pranayama has been evolved through it.
Pranayama is beneficial not only for maintaining health but also for easily
preparing mind for higher level Yogic studies like Dharana, Dhyana by
gaining control over mind which is extremely unstable like mercury. This
has been written down in his works ‘Patanjal Yoga Darshana’ by Maharshi
Patanjali way back in the year 200 B.C. as "YmaUmgw M `mo½`Vm _Zg…&'which means, by practising Pranayama, the mind gets prepared for
performing Dharana. Yogi Swatmaram in the fifth chapter of his Yogic
work ‘Hathapradipika’, which is written somewhere during the 14th to
16th century, has described the predominant regions of operation of the
‘Tridoshas’ viz. Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Accordingly, the region from sole
Yoga Varta : April 2017 10
`moJdmVm©
of feet to the umbilicus is known as 'Vata Pradesh’, the region from
umbilicus to chest is known as 'Pitta Pradesh' and the chest upward is
known as 'Kapha Pradesh'. From this it is expected that, these Tridoshas,
Vata, Pitta and Kapha should keep functioning properly in their
respective functional areas. It is stated in Hathapradipika that various
diseases and ailments can occur if any one of these Tridoshas move from
its functional area and enters into other's, by any reason, especially
while erroneously practising Pranayama. The remedies suggested in the
below-mentioned verses from the fifth chapter of Hathapradipika, are
predominantly related to Vayu Tatva –
`pñ_Z² `pñ_Z² `Xm Xoeo éOm ~mYm àOm`Vo&Vpñ_Z² Xoeo pñWV§ dm`w§ _Zgm n[a{MÝV`oV&& (H.P. 5.9)

This means whenever any region is afflicted by disease, one should
contemplate upon the Vayu situated in that region. With concentrated
mind, one should meditate (in sitting or lying down on back position)
upon Vayu and for that one should fill the lungs by inhaling maximum
possible air through nose. Then to exhale with full capacity using
Rechaka techniques through nose to empty out the lungs as best as
possible. Thus it shows how Vayu Tatva can be effectively used as
treatment with the help of such similar and simpler Yogic practices.
Below mentioned famous aphorism in Ayurveda appropriately
defines the Health as –
g_Xmof… g_mp½Zü g_YmVw_c{H«$`…&àgÝZmË_opÝÐ`_Z… ñdñW{_Ë`{^Yr`Vo&& (MaH$g§{hVm)
Thus that person shall be called healthy who is having all Doshas in a
balanced state, who has all ‘Agnis’ including ‘Jatharagni’ i.e. digestive
fire neither too intense nor too dull, that means, in a moderate and
equilibrium state, who is having all ‘Dhatus’ in right proportion and in
abundance, whose excretion is proper and whose mind, senses and soul
are in pleasurable state. This definition of health is based on the
11 Yoga Varta : April 2017
`moJdmVm©
principle embodied in the aphorism – Xmof YmVy _cm_wc§ {h eara_²&According to this principle, it is said that our body is formed and
maintained due to the Tridoshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha; the Sapta
Dhatus - Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja and Shukra; and the
three Malas - Purisha (faeces), Mutra (urine) and Sveda (sweat).
Amongst them, the role of Tridoshas is considered very important
because for the healthy life, the functioning of Tridoshas is of immense
value. When the Tridoshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha are in right
proportions and are functioning properly in the body, then the Sapta
Dhatus and three Malas too remain in balanced state and maintain the
health of the body. When there is imbalance amongst these Tridoshas
or if they flare up, then such contaminated Tridoshas also infect the
Sapta Dhatus and Tri Malas resulting in disease. That's why the Vata,
Pitta and Kapha are called Doshas. Reason for explaining all this in so
much details is, to emphasize the fact that the most important amongst
the Tridoshas is the Vata Dosha. The Tatva that induces energy and
action in body is called Vata or Vayu. All kinds of movements in our body
are generated by this Vata or Vayu. Vayu is the one that stimulates all
our senses and also kindles the ‘Agni’ in body called ‘Jatharagni’ i.e.
digestive fire. Vayu is the source of happiness and vigor as it initiates all
Dhatus to perform their functions. Vayu creates space for the various
passages present in our body. Pitta and Kapha individually cannot harm
us in any way if not accompanied by Vata Dosha. But if Vata Dosha alone
flares up, then many diseases erupt in the body. This Vata Dosha alone
can infect other two Doshas – Pitta and Kapha, and also the Dhatus,
Malas and different passages inside body because it is Vata only, that
carries Pitta and Kapha Doshas from one place to other and when
accompanied with infected Vata, the balance of Kapha and Pitta gets
disturbed causing diseases. Thus, it is considered in Ayurveda that a
flared up Vata is the basic reason for all the diseases in the body. That's
why, for whatever reasons the Vata Dosha has flared up, it becomes
necessary that it shall be treated by way of diet, medicines,
Naturopathy, etc. to bring it back to the balanced state.

At every step in our day to day life, we come across this vital Vayu
Tatva. Therefore, everyone must sincerely do all the necessary efforts to
keep this very essential Vayu in its best possible pure form, to derive all
its health-related benefits. If we consciously adopt some small positive
steps related to the Vayu Tatva, then it will help us greatly in enhancing
our health. For example, whenever possible, we should sit quietly, for a
while in an clean, open place for the fresh air. The experience of the deep
sleep underneath the star-studded open sky enjoying cool breeze in an
insect-free environment, can't be expressed in words. The health benefits
of the Vayu Tatva can be easily derived if the health of five sensory
organs – ear, nose, eyes, tongue and skin is in good condition. Therefore,
it is necessary that along with many useful Yogic Kriyas for cleansing of
eyes, ear and skin, the Kriyas like Shwasana Marga Shuddhi and
Kapalabhati meant for cleansing of nasal passage and Simple Yogic Kriyas
like Jivha Dhouti, Kapala Randhra Dhouti shall be practised for
maintaining health of nose and mouth. The health of body and mind shall
be maintained by inclusion of Pranayama practices like Anulom-Vilom,
Ujjayi, Bhastrika, Bhramari in our daily regime of Yogabhyas. Care should
be taken to see that the breathing is through nose only. Habit of covering
the face for protection against insects while sleeping, should be broken
by inculcating the habit of sleeping in a mosquito net. A very simple but
extremely useful exercise of brisk walking, silently without talking with
anybody, should be practised daily and continuously either in the
morning or evening in a nearby garden, open space or on a seashore and
if not possible at any of these places, then at least on the building’s
terrace. It will be the most beneficial act a comprehensive exercise like
Suryanamaskar is practised alongside brisk walking. Care should be taken
at home as well as at workplace that the arrangement of doors, windows
and curtains is not obstructing the cross ventilation. Smoking should be
strictly avoided. Contact with harmful fumes from burning of rubber or
tyres should also be avoided. Hazardous gases and chemicals like
chlorine, chlorofluorocarbons, insecticide and the articles of which they
13 Yoga Varta : April 2017
`moJdmVm©
are part of should be avoided unless and until utmost necessary. Avoid
crackers emitting harmful smoke. Spitting at public places to be stopped
to prevent the spread of lungs diseases like T.B. Don't throw garbage and
litter in public places. Separate covered dustbins should be used to
segregate the dry and wet garbage. Maintain the house and surroundings
clean and take care of the plant life and trees in the neighbouring area.
Plant as many trees and saplings as possible and take proper care of
them. Ensure that environment is not polluted by our vehicles. Unless
utmost necessary, prevent the usage of cars and scooters. Give
preference to walking and whenever possible, make use of non-polluting
vehicles like those running on CNG or use bicycle. Blowing of conch daily,
morning and evening, helps in increasing the respiratory powers and also
derives the optimum benefits of clean environment. Thus, constantly
remembering the Vayu Tatva depicted on the cover page of Yogavarta and
by practically adopting all the above mentioned useful practices, let us
maintain our overall health in its best condition!

WHO WANTS SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ?
Very few people do whatever is real and ultimately
beneficial to life. People are generally habituated to
lead aimless life. Most of them are addicted only to
eat, drink and enjoy. They cannot keep control on their
emotional life. Some people never think about their
spiritual life and spiritual enlightenment. They feel that
the life is only to eat, drink and be merry.
Once Bhagwan Buddha had come to one village for giving spiritual
lessons. He was trying to awaken every person spiritually. There was
one person who was taking interest in Bhagwan Buddha's lectures. He
said, "Bhagwan, every day you say that everyone can become spiritually
enlightened. Then why don't you make everybody from this village
enlightened? Why are you not getting success in your mission of making
all people aware of spirituality?
Bhagwan Buddha calmly said, "My friend, tell me how many days
you are staying in this village, how many persons are there in this village
and how many of them you really know well?"
"I am in this village for long and I know almost all the people from
this village," said the person. Bhagwan Buddha then advised him to go
to the village next day early in the morning and make an exhaustive list
of the people living in this village and of them, who are really interested
in spiritual upliftment and spiritual enlightenment.
The man accordingly woke-up early on the next day and went to the
village at the early morning. He sat under one tree and started asking
15 Yoga Varta : April 2017
`moJdmVm©
everyone passing by as to whether he was interested in spiritual
enlightenment. He also informed them that Bhagwan Buddha has came
to our village for helping us to achive spiritual enlightenment. He
continued this exercise till late night. But to his total surprise, not a
single person said that he was interested in spiritual enlightenment.
Next day, he met Bhagwan Buddha and told him that nobody was
interested in the spiritual upliftment. He, therefore, again requested
Buddha to tell as to why it is so? Bhagwan Bhaddha replied calmly with
smile saying, "Everyone is capable of making spiritual progress. But very
few persons really wish to get enlightenment in spiritual field. This is
the truth. Therefore, my mission is to relentlessly search for those few
who may be interested in spiritual upliftment. Meeting one or two such
persons is worth the efforts we are in!"

are good. Article of March 2017 is slightly descriptive but very informative.
You have pointed out relation between Yoga & Mind very nicely. But people
from our area don't know how much time Yoga should be done daily for
better benefits ? Most of the people consider Yoga as one type of exercise.
But to get benefits physically & mentally, one must have trust in Yama &
Niyama. So please elaborate this point also in your article. Thank you!

The first of its kind Maharashtra Yoga Utsav was held at Mumbai
from 24th to 26th March 2017 at three locations within the city viz.
Kaivalyadhama (Marine Drive), SNDT University (Churchgate) and K. C.
College (Churchgate). The Utsav showed an overwhelming participation
of over 3000 registrations from different parts of Maharashtra exhibiting
‘Unity in Diversity’ in a true yogic sense.
It began with 10 parallel Workshops conducted by 10 different
Schools (Institutes) of Yoga in Maharashtra State, based on various
interesting topics ranging from Light on Yoga, Management of
Hypertension through Yoga, Science of Kriya Yoga, Rajayoga to Chaitanya
Pranayama and Meditation. Similar parallel sessions were held on all
three days at two different locations – SNDT University and
Kaivalyadham, thus totally 41 workshops were held.
The Introductory Session held on 24th March 2017 at 2.00 pm at
Patkar Hall (SNDT University) was extremely interesting. Mr. Subodh
Tiwari (CEO, Kaivalyadham) gave the welcome address as the Organizing
Secretary of the Maharashtra Yoga Utsav and mentioned that the
objective of such gatherings is to integrate Yoga communities and
practices from different lineages and States by offering a common
platform to Yoga seekers and experts alike. Dr. Nagrathna - Medical
Director of SVYASA University, Bengaluru, shared her experiences
related to the extensive research being carried out in the field of Yoga.

Honorable Cabinet Minister for Water and Sanitation was the Chief
Guest for the Introductory Session. Mr. Lonikar, himself a Yoga
practitioner, supported Yoga whole-heartedly saying that Yoga is a
blessing to the world and that it should not be considered merely as a
therapy for treatment but should be accepted as a life-style. He also
stressed on the fact that ‘Yoga is India’s hospital’ and it has no substitute
as Yoga makes you smart, young and energetic. According to him, the
reason Honorable Prime Minister of India promoted Yoga is because it
is the only answer for a healthy and fit next generation and
consequently our country to become a super power.
The Inaugural Ceremony began with a beautiful and pious e§IZmXand _§Ìmoƒma followed by lighting of the lamp and floral tribute to Sage
Patanjali. The ceremony was held amongst well-known dignitaries like
Shri O.P Tiwari, Honorable Secretary, Kaivalyadhama, Dr. Bhushan
Upadhyay, Additional Director General of Police, Maharashtra and
Dr. Sashikala Wanzare, Honorable Vice Chancellor, SNDT University. Shri
O.P Tiwari welcomed the guest by saying that Swami Kuvalyananda’s
dream of Yoga becoming a complete message for humanity - mind, body
and soul has been realized today. He also emphasized on the fact that
Yoga should be spread without running behind fame and money and
Yoga should not be diluted in any form. Dr. Wanzare who was the guest
of honor defined Yoga as the means to link mankind from heart to heart
and thereafter to God. She appreciated India’s Honorable Prime
Minister’s efforts to speak about Yoga at the distinguished platform of
UN assembly to attract due attention and respect towards this
magnificent science. Dr. Bhushan Upadhyay has been a Yoga practitioner
himself for over 40 years. He thanked the organizers for inviting a police
personnel to speak on Yoga. According to him, Police department is
among the most stressed out departments in the country, particularly

the staff working with prisoners. He was instrumental in declaring three
months early release for the prisoners practising regular Yoga as
substantial improvement was observed among such prisoners.
According to him, Yoga integrates all the five koshas and is nothing but
merging man with man first, then with nature and eventually merging
with the cosmic conscious. The best advantage of practising Yoga,
according to him is that it acts as a stress buster. Three books were
released during this session, namely second edition of "{ZgJm©hma' in
Marathi and first edition of "àmH¥${VH$ Amhma' in Hindi, both authored by
Shri Durgadas Savant of Yoga Vidya Niketan and second edition of
&&`moJm_¥V_²&& by K.J Somaiya Bharatiya Sanskriti Peetham, Mumbai. The
session concluded with a meaningful vote of thanks proposed by
Dr. Ulka Natu, a well-known Gynecologist and Yoga expert, who also
compered the entire Inaugural Session excellently.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by a Cultural Program
comprising of breath-holding Yoga practices presented by visually
impaired children (composed and executed by Dr. Nisha Thakker of Yoga
Vidya Niketan); spectacular rope and pole Mallakhamb performances
(conducted by world renowned coach Shri Uday Deshpande of Samarth
Vyayam Mandir, Dadar) and Yoga Ballet (Sadguru Mangeshda Kriya Yoga
Foundation, Mumbai).
The theme of the first discussion (plenary) session on 25th
March 2017 was ‘Understanding Yoga in Scientific Perspective’, chaired
by Dr. Rajan Welukar, Provost - Somaiya Vidyavihar with over 32
years of rich experience in the field of education. The first speaker
Dr. Praseeda Menon from Scientific Research Department,
Kaivalyadhama spoke about the origin and journey of scientific research
in the field of Yoga. She spoke about the beginning of the scientific
research at Kaivalyadhama by Swami Kuvalyananda way back in 1916-
17. She also emphasized the fact that Yoga is based on perfectly rational
principles. She also shared some of Swami Kuvalyananda’s meaningful
quotes like “Propagation of Yoga after due research will lead mankind to
a truly regenerative life” and “Yoga and research in Yoga can serve as a
bridge between Science and Spirituality”, which remain true and
meaningful even in today’s era. She also briefly stated some of the path-

breaking research studies undertaken by Kaivalyadhama Research
Center along with the current and prospective research projects.
Dr. Taral Nagda, Orthopaedic Surgeon was the second speaker of the
discussion session. He spoke on Science of Yoga in the context of
Alignment and Balance. According to him, alignment in Yogic postures is
very important and it happens when the center of gravity and the line
of point of contact with the ground fall in one straight line and so
alignment in Yoga is nothing but pure geometry. Accurate alignment in
Yogic postures leads to à`ËZe¡{Wë`& or effortlessness and balance. He
also mentioned that alignment needs balance of muscles and not just
bones which ultimately leads to pñWagwI_mgZ_²& as per the core sutras by
Sage Patanjali. The third speaker Dr. Rajvi H. Mehta belonged to Mumbai
branch of Iyengar Yogashraya, Pune. She spoke on scientific evidences
on efficacy of Iyengar Yoga. According to her, there is a dearth of
effective tools to measure the effect of Yoga on mankind. Modern
science always takes the reductionist approach, however the science of
Yoga is always integrative. She also highlighted the fact that Yoga
decreases the perception towards stress and not stress itself. She
emphasized that practice of Yoga has proven to develop better
discriminatory powers, improved decision making and multitasking
capabilities. Dr. Rajvi also discussed some of the experimental studies
undertaken by Iyengar Institute concerning Parkinson’s disease and
Cancer.
The second plenary session held in the pre-lunch session was based
on the theme of ‘Yoga and Cultural Synthesis’, chaired by Dr. Mrs. Kanak
Rele – world renowned classical dancer. The first speaker Dr. H. H.
Sadguru Yogiraj Sri Sri Mangeshda from Sadguru Mangeshda Kriya Yoga
Foundation shared his experiences in the context of cultural synthesis.
According to him, cultural synthesis is nothing but the ‘oneness’ which
is an inherent part of every human. Dr. S. N. Pathan, Former Vice
Chancellor, MIT University, Pune was the second speaker for the session.
He beautifully brought out the similarities between the Yogic postures
and postures adopted during Namaz by the Muslim community and
indicated that Namaz is nothing but simplified Yoga. He also voiced the
need to encourage the Muslim community to practise Yoga in order to

better promote Indian cultural ethos. The third speaker for the session,
Father Joe Perriera of Kripa Foundation said that Yoga is a cultural
science that cuts across all cultures, religions, castes and is a beautiful
blend of science and faith. He also mentioned a peculiar study published
in the reputed medical journal Lancet which provided evidential data
that Yoga has the potential to change Type ‘A’ personality to Type ‘B’.
Dr. Rele concluded the session by sharing her experiences of dancing
and Yoga. She stated the importance of deep breathing while dancing
and highlighted the fact that Yoga leads to improved concentration.
According to her, Yoga is beyond the cultural barriers of religion and
applies to mankind at large.
The third plenary session was post-lunch, based on the theme of
‘Yoga for Lifestyle Management’, chaired by Dr. Pradnya Sarvade,
Additional Director General of Police, Maharashtra State. Dr. Sarvade in
spite of being a medical doctor, has been instrumental in starting Yoga
classes for the police personnel across 72 police stations in Maharashtra
because she firmly believes in the power of Yoga in stress management
which is an integral part of police life. First speaker Mr. Peter D’souza of
Brahma Kumari spoke on how to manage lifestyle through Raj Yoga.
According to him, lifestyle of an individual depends on his country,
religion, value system, job and family background. Positive lifestyle is
the one where the outcomes are based on happiness, contentment and
joy while negative lifestyle harms one’s own self. He also asserted that
Yoga is the precise link between four types of relationships - relationship
with self, relationship with nature, relationship with fellow beings and
above all relationship with the supreme soul. He stressed that the
regular practice of Yoga leads to a positive lifestyle. Ms. Neelam Vaswani
from the Yoga Institute, Santacruz was the second speaker of the
session. According to her, life is based on four solid pillars of Aahar,
Vihara, Vichar and Achar and all these four need to be balanced for a
peaceful and happy life. She also emphasized the need to deliberately
practise relaxation of mind by demonstrating meditation through
conscious alertness of surrounding sounds. The third speaker,
Shri Durgadas Savant from Yoga Vidya Niketan forcefully spoke on the
importance of diet in Yogabhyas. According to him, ‘Hurry-Curry-Worry’
29 Yoga Varta : April 2017
`moJdmVm©
are the three real culprits causing stress in life and as per Naturopathy,
toxemia is the only disease and so detoxification is the only solution. He
emphasized the fact that stress can be managed only through self-
management. He also asserted that medicines suppress the symptoms
without treating the root cause. On the contrary, Yoga not only
influences Aahar, Vihar and Nidra but goes beyond these three
Ayurvedic sutras to manage the disease. The session concluded with a
few comments by the chairperson Dr. Pradnya Sarvade which included
her experiences with Yoga in the Police Department.
Both the plenary sessions on the last day of the Maharashtra Yoga
Utsav were held at K. C. College Auditorium and were interesting and
interactive. The first session entitled ‘Yoga Therapy’ was chaired by
Yogacharya Vishwas Mandalik (Yoga Vidya Dham, Nashik) and comprised
of learned speakers like Dr. Ulka Natu, renowned Gynecologist and Yoga
expert, Ghantali Mitra Mandal, Thane, Dr. Samprasad Vinod of Maharshi
Vinod Research Foundation, Pune and Swami Nirmalananda from Bihar
School of Yoga. The session was extremely thought-provoking and
interesting. Dr. Natu spoke on Principles of Yoga Therapy. She started
with the concept of health saying ‘Involution is Health and Evolution is
Disease’. One who is happy is always healthy according to
Bhagwadgeeta. Mind and intellect are two ends of the same spectrum
and they need to be balanced skillfully. She also highlighted the
importance of counselling in Yoga Therapy and emphasized the fact that
depth of knowledge is required to render services as a Therapist. The
second speaker Dr. Samprasad Vinod discussed Yoga Therapy as adjunct
or supplementary to main stream medicine. He also stressed that India
is the ‘Mother of Yoga’ and so it is our collective responsibility to
maintain its sanctity and purity. He stated that if meditation becomes a
part of one’s daily life, health is bound to follow as a byproduct.
Moreover, if we take joy in practising Yoga and not merely look at it as
a treatment, it becomes much more effective. He also emphasized the
use of authentic texts for teaching and learning Yoga to avoid its
dilution. Swami Nirmalananda expressed her views about Yogabhyas
and voiced the threat that current Yoga vidya is far away from its aim of
connecting first with self, then with fellow beings and ultimately with

the supreme. She said, ‘‘If Yoga is taught as a lifestyle, therapy
automatically happens.’’ The session was concluded by comments from
the chairperson Yogacharya Vishwas Mandalik stating that today many
are ready to adopt Yoga by spending time and money and so it is the
responsibility of the teachers to imbibe true Yoga principles not in
adulterated form. He affirmed that, though science of Yoga is slow, it is
result-oriented. Yoga is ancient, however therapy is recent and so not in
the standardized form, yet results are found to be positive.
The final panel discussion was based on a very relevant and
important topic of ‘Yoga for Youth’. It was chaired by Smt. Manisha
Verma, an IAS Officer and Secretary of Tribal Affairs. She highlighted the
fact that India has a great legacy of Yoga. However, today youths are
facing challenges like consumerism, rising aspirations of material
wealth, alienation and fractured family ties. They require stillness,
awareness and focus. There is a need to popularize Yoga without
compromising with its principles. She also raised a question whether
making Yoga compulsory in schools will make the requisite impact on
our youth? Dr. Kala Acharya, Director, K. J. Somaiya, Bharatiya Sanskriti
Peetham was the opening speaker. She emphasized on the fact that
yogabhyas should be based on the basic health structure and nature
(àH¥${V) of an individual namely dmV, H$\$ and {nÎm and also on occupation.
Yoga Nidra for manual labourers and Inner Silence (A§Va_m¡Z) for teachers
will certainly help the respective professions. According to her,
customization of Yoga and therapy is important for youth. Mr. Mickey
Mehta, Holistic Health Guru conducted his talk in a very lively and
hilarious manner. He said Yoga is not complex and should not be treated
as "gOm' (punishment), rather should be looked at as "_Om' or
entertainment. According to him, most of the schools and school
children avert from Yogabhyas because of the absence of fun factor in
it. He stressed on the fact that every Yogic posture should transform
into a character building exercise for today’s youth. The third speaker
Dr. Rohit Sabharwal of Art of Living began by saying that today’s youth
are innocent and true and are ready to transform although they seem
to be highly distracted, restless, indecisive and impatient. They are
shunting between depression and aggression and that we need to be

`moJdmVm©
focused and relaxed at the same time. To demonstrate this, he
conducted a very interesting and interactive clap exercise with the
audience. He also spoke about six qualities of a seeker –
acknowledgment, willingness to learn, non-judgmental, committed to
his goal, puts truth and service before pleasure and perseverance. He
added that we need to teach traditional Yoga in an interesting way to
youth today giving simile of old wine in the new bottle which was highly
appreciated by all. Mr. Bharat Dabholkar, last speaker of the session, a
renowned actor and advertisement personality shared his personal
experiences to elucidate about practice of Yoga in his daily life.
Remaining stress-free, not getting angry, making others laugh and
staying away from alcohol and smoking were some of his ways to lead
a happy and peaceful life which are in line with the Yogic principles.
The Valedictory Function of this grand ‘Maharashtra Yoga Utsav’
took place between 3 to 4.30 pm. at K. C. College Auditorium which was
presided by Shri O. P. Tiwari (President, Indian Yoga Association). The
audience present in large number listened with rapt attention the
knowledge-filled, thought-provoking and inspiring speeches of Justice
B. N. Srikrishna (Retd. Judge, Supreme Court of India), Dr. H. R.
Nagendra (Chancellor, SVYASA, Bangaluru), Yogacharya Vishwas
Mandalik (Yoga Vidya Dham, Nashik) and Dr. H. H. Sadguru Yogiraj Sri Sri
Mangeshda (Sadguru Mangeshda Kriya Yoga Foundation).
In the nutshell, various Workshops, Lecture-cum-Demonstrations,
Opening Ceremony, Valedictory Function and all the Discussion Sessions
conducted during the three days of Maharashtra Yoga Utsav-2017 were
extremely informative, intriguing and interesting. It was a good learning
experience for all the Yoga seekers, practitioners and experts alike.
Similar conferences and summits on Yoga not only at State but at
National levels would certainly give concrete directions to take this
magnificent science to new heights in near future!
