J.H.:Anynewproject,includingafacelift,mustfollowastricttimelinetomeetthemarketlaunchdeadline.Thedesignprocessisathreadrunningthroughoutthedevelopmentofanewmodel.Anall-encompassingactivity,ittakesdozensofmonthsandlastsrightuptotheproductionstage.However,thetimeframefromthefirstdraftstothesolidfinaldesignofthismodelwasaroundtenmonths.
HOWDOESITFEELTOREVISITYOURPASTWORK?DOYOUSEEYOURSELFASENHANCINGYOURBABYWITHTHEBENEFITOFHINDSIGHT,ORISITANECESSARYREJUVENATION?
J.H.:Wedesignerscanalwaysspotareasthatcouldbeimproved.Obviously,creativejuicescanrunmorefreelywhenwe’refacedwithabrand-newmodel,butevenhereweseldomhitontherightdesignatthefirstattempt.Itusuallytakesmonthstofine-tunethefinallook.Withafaceliftproject,mostpartsofthecararesimplyagiven,andtheredesignofmodifiedcomponentsmuststayinlinewiththosepartswhilemovingtheoveralldesignforward.Insomerespects,designingafaceliftismorechallengingthandesigningabrand-newcar.Andmodernisingamodellikethethird-generationŠKODAFABIA,alreadyanenormouslysuccessfulcar,alwayscomeswithagreatdealofresponsibilityandmotivation.
WHATSORTOFIMPRESSIONDOYOUBELIEVETHEMODERNISEDFABIAWILLMAKE?
J.H.:WeatŠKODADesignstrivetodesigncarsforallkindsofcustomers.Ibelievethatthefaceliftwillbeanelegantbreathoffreshair.AsusualwiththeŠKODAFABIA,thiscarwillbeappreciatedbothbysports-mindedcustomersandbythosewholikeachicdesign.Bearinginmindthatpracticality,roominess,and'SimplyClever'solutionsareparforthecourseinourvehicles,Ihopethatthismodernisedvehiclewillalsobeattractivetoyoungfamilieswithchildren.

J.H.:Ourteamisconstantlyexpanding.Withoverahundredpeoplefromtwenty-fivedifferentcountries,wewantourpeopletorotateacrossvariousprojects.Welookfornewideasandmethodsthat,undertheguidanceofthechiefdesigner,wethencoalesceintoauniformanddistinctdesignlanguage.TheFABIA’snewlookwaslargelydesignedbyateamofpeopledifferentfromtheoriginalone.However,asthoseofusworkingforŠKODADesignconsidermutualcooperationtobehighlyimportant,wealwaysconsultnewideasandpitchthemtothestudio’sbroaderstaff.Everyonecanvoicetheiropinionandhaveasayintheendresult.Teamworkisalwaysthenameofthegame.
WHATWOULDYOUSAYARETHECAR’SDESIGNHIGHLIGHTS?
J.H.:Wehavemanagedtoemphasisethecar’ssportyandsleekfeatureswhilealsounderscoringthepurityofitscrystallinedesign.Theheadlamps,thecrisperradiatorgrilleandthenewfrontbumperhavecompletelychangedthecharacterofthecar’sfascia,andtherearlightclustersmakeŠKODA’ssignatureC-shapedtaillightsstandoutevenmorethaneverbefore.Therearbumperhasalsobeenreworkedandnewdesignshavebeenaddedtotherangeofwheels.
WHATWOULDYOUWISHFORTHENEWFABIAASITMAKESITSWAYINTOTHEWORLD?
J.H.:Mywishisthatlittleboyswillturntheirheadsandlittlegirlswillpointatitasitdrivesdownthestreet,thatdriverswillenjoydrivingit,andthatallpassengersexperiencethesheerjoyofadrivethatbringsasmiletotheirface.
