Exterior

Design

When designing the new Fabia model, designers took for basis two clear requirements: to apply a new design language of the ŠKODA brand and to change the basic proportions of the car‘s silhouette. One look at the novelty reveals that the designers have performed their task at more than 100%. New elements of the design language that ŠKODA presented through the VisionC study at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014 add unmistakable personality with a strong touch of respectable elegance to the third generation Fabia model.

The front half of the car

› The front-end bears characteristic features such as the radiator grille with 19 vertical bars, the logo located on a prominent projection of the bonnet or a large air intake hole in the bumper. › Covers of headlamps with crystalline facets refer to the tradition of Bohemian cut glass. The headlights are suppliedintwoversions-inaconventionalreflectorone and with projector modules and LED daytime running lights.

› The large black intake hole in the bumper is continuously followed up by fog lights, symbolically linked by a horizontal bar.

› A pronounced spoiler in the colour of the bodywork is fittedtothelowerpartofthefront-end.

› One of the evolutionary design elements that ŠKODA presented in the VisionC study are recesses on the bonnet. They are shaped differently than in Octavia and Rapid models.

The side of the car

› An essential design element is a distinctive line extending around the entire car. In the front, it follows up on the upper edge of the headlights and the grille, in the rear, it passes above the tail light assemblies and forms a sharp line under the glass of the luggage compartment door.

› Together with a recess at the bottom part of the door, it creates a play of light and shadow by which it visually lightens the whole side surface of the car.

› Turn signal lights moved into the exterior rear mirror housings and, again, enhanced the overall impression of the novelty.

The rear half of the car

› The rear half of the Fabia model amply works with sharp edges and distinct breaks. The area under the edge below the rear window has a negative slope, the same as the narrow area under the space for the licence plate.

› The tail light assemblies subtly extend to the sides of the car. Their surface is rugged and, as the tradition goes, it refers to the Bohemian cut crystal.

› Using edges and recesses, the design managed to visually break up the massive rear bumper in the lower part of which an air funnel is indicated. The end part of the exhaust pipe is hidden in all engine versions.

Individualisation

The new Fabia offers so-far the most extensive individualisation options in the modern history of ŠKODA cars.Itishardtofindcomparisonsamongcompetitorsfor15 exterior paintwork colour shades and a total of 9 colour combinations of the interior.

› The designers also designed a so-called ColourConcept which allows one to select, to the body colour, a different colour of the roof (including A-pillars), exterior mirror housings and light alloy wheels: white, silver, black or red.

› All in all, a total of 125 colour combinations of the body, the roof, exterior mirror housings, light alloy wheels and the interior will be available.

› You will get more information (not only) on the ColourConcept at the PT Fabia 2014

Quiz

In what versions are ŠKODA Fabia‘s headlights supplied?

a) reflector and projector headlights with LED daytime running lights b) halogen and bi-xenon c) only halogen

Where is the side turn signal light located in the Fabia model?

a) on the front wing b) on the A-pillar c) in the housing of the exterior mirror

On which design study are some elements of the ŠKODA Fabia car based? a) Montreaux b) VisionC c) VisionD

Interior

With the new interior concept, the novelty from Mladá Boleslav becomes a compact car with great personality. It is only up to the imagination, taste and requirements of the customers which colour combination of seat covers, door panels and the dash panel they choose. Within the „ColourConcept“, the owner can then harmonize the colour of the car, roof, exterior mirror housings and wheels with the interior. Furthermore, the Fabia also offers a lot of novelties related to infotainment and the opportunities to interconnect the car with other devices.

MIB Infotainment For the new Fabia model, another stage of development of multimedia information appliances has been developed: MIB (Modular Infotainment Baukasten) - radios and multimedia systems. MIB is available in three types differing in the screen size and the level of amenities. Newly, using the MIB (Swing and Bolero), one can control the vehicle settings, by the means of the Car button on the control panel, regardless of whether the vehicle is equipped with a Maxi DOT display.

MIB Blues MIB Swing MIB Bolero

MirrorLink™

The new feature MirrorLink™ provides the connection of several functions of the smart phone together with the car systems. It is possible to display on the MIB Bolero screen a copy - a „mirror“ of the display of a mobile phone and to control it using the MIB‘s touch screen. It is thus easy to use phone features such as navigation. All installed applications holdingacertificateconfirmingthattheyaresafetohandlewhile driving and are therefore compatible with MirrorLink™ can be used.

The advantage of the MirrorLink™ interconnection is the full integration with the car system:

› For example, when the telephone navigation system has been activated, music from the radio is muted when voice-guided directions are being given. Likewise, navigation-system directions and audio-system music are muted during a phone call.

› For writing texts, keyboard is used on the infotainment display which is more comfortable than on a mobile device.

SmartGate Another possibility how to interconnect a smart phone (up to 4 devices) with car systems is a SmartGate solution. Through SmartGate, the data from a CAN data bus are made accessible (communication is only one-way) for applications in smart phones. SmartGate from electronic systems reads and further provides more than 40 parameters. On the basis of these data, SmartGate, or rather applications connected to it, can compute and display, in a well-arranged graphical manner, operating parameters of the vehicle interesting for the user.

Simply Clever Solutions Other useful details are being added to the proven „Simply Clever“elementswhichalreadythefirst-generationFabiamodel could boast. The total list of „Simply Clever“ elements contains 17 items, 10 of which appear in the Fabia model for thefirsttime.

TechnologyOut of the new MQB modular platform, which was introduced in ŠKODA cars by the Octavia III (third generation) model, Fabia car used elements important fortheuseofunifieddesigngroupsandsubgroups.Theyare especially engines, including the method of their placement, electronics and electronic control units and also elements and accessories of the MIB infotainment. In the next chapter, we will focus on the MQB, engines and transmissions.

MQB

› Almost half of the structure of the new Fabia is built on elements of the new MQB modular concept. This is then supplemented by the newly developed groups coming from the PQ26 platform. Proven features such as the rear seats, the pedals group, head restraints, etc. are taken from the second generation Fabia.

› The result is the latest design, which is available for this segment in the Volkswagen concern. The third generation of Fabia is therefore, compared to its predecessor, out of more than 90% brand new.

Engines

› Completely changed variety of Fabia engines is formed by petrol and diesel engines of new generations. Aggregates are placed in a transverse position in the front and drive the front wheels.

›Acommonfeatureofthenewenginesisthefulfilmentof theEU6emissionstandard,highefficiency,dynamismand low fuel consumption.

› All engines are now tilted backwards (at an angle of 12 degrees) and mounted with the exhaust side facing backwards.

› To drive camshafts, exclusively maintenance-free toothed belts are used in the engines.

› EA211 petrol engine series is presented in cars ŠKODA by a three-cylinder engine 1.0 MPI and it is exactly this engine that is now available also in the Fabia model.

Pair the engines and their performance characteristics:

1.0 MPI 44kW 1.0 MPI 55kW 1.2 TSI 66kW 1.2 TSI 81kW 1.4 TDI 66kW 1.4 TDI 77kW

Transmissions

› For the Fabia third generation model both manual and increasingly popular automatic transmissions are available.

› Automatic transmissions are represented already by the proven dual-clutch DSG transmission which provides a unique combination of advantages of manual and automatic transmissions. In the Fabia model its 7-speed version appears.

Choose engines from the list that can be combined with an automatic DSG transmission.

1.0 MPI/ 44kW 1.0 MPI/ 55kW 1.2 TSI/ 66kW 1.2 TSI/ 81kW 1.4 TDI/ 66kW 1.4 TDI/ 77kW
