The opportunity for people to learn practical skills and encourage more sustainable day to day living! A series of practical workshops have been planned for the Malak Community Shed and will commence in February 2013. The Malak Community Shed will strive to become a focal point of the community where people can meet talk, work, learn and teach. The overall aim will be to build better understanding of diversity, address social isolation and contribute to the

dismantling of social segregation. The Community will benefit from the Malak Community Shed in

practical ways and it will encourage communication, sharing and cooperation through the exchange of ideas tools, goods and in-kind services. The community and participants will also benefit through the development of strong relationships and emerging friendships that will ensure a better sense of community wellbeing.

Tools, Trades & Tips Workshops Planned for Monday nights participants will lean news skills using every day tools and hardware. From furniture restoration and re-purposing, bicycle repairs and maintenance, sewing & tailoring, sustainable gardening, installations and maintenance of household items such as smoke detectors and energy efficient products, do-it-yourself assembly of flatpack goods and basic house hold & handyman skills. There is also interest in being able to produce built sets and props for local community theatre productions planned for 2013.

Community Connect WorkshopsPlanned for Tuesday nights, the connect workshops will give participants the opportunity to learn about current technology trends and how to connect to them. Up loading, downloading, maintenance including virus soft ware updates and usage of everyday software applications including Skype, Email, Google, You Tube, Blogging and Facebook will be on offer. Introductions to communications technology hardware including I-Phone and I-Pads and basic computer assembly will also be topics that are covered as with participation in establishing the Community Shed web site.

Arts, Culture & Performance WorkshopsMusic, art and dance are an important component of any vibrant community culture and the community of Malak and environs are no different. Currently, there are many emerging

performance groups in the local area who perform for their local community social group. With the rising popularity of the successful monthly Malak Community Dinners opportunities for these groups to perform at a higher level can now be realised.

Once a month on Wednesday evenings local Darwin artists will workshop with interested emerging performance groups and collaborate to produce new performance works for the monthly community dinners and other Darwin events. Topics covered will include performance presentation, booking agreements and commitments, sound and audio management, costumes, props and attire, musical instruments and increasing performance options and opportunities for the future.

For more information on how to get involved contact the project coordinator: Paul Wyatt on 8945 7347 or mobile: 0407 454 131.
