The Malak Community Shed

Community Shed joins with Council for Malak celebration On the Thursday the 9th of May, the Malak Community Shed joined with the City of Darwin’s Healthy Darwin Program and other community stakeholders including Darwin Community Arts, Danila Dilba and NT Legal Aid for the first Malak Community Celebration. The event was held in Holzerland Park opposite the Malak Shopping Centre from 3.30 - 7PM and was attended by over 200 local residents. A host of community entertainment was on show including The Malakers, Hoops for Health, Belly Dancers, Darwin Tai chi and the Fairy and Phil on stilts. The food that was free from the World Cafe was both healthy and delicious. Local residents had the opportunity to chat with the Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim and Deputy

Lord Mayor Alderman Allan Mitchell. The Member for Karama Delia Lawrie also attended the event along with

Federal Member Natasha Griggs.

The Malak Community Shed is funded through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), and is the focal point of the new community space in the underground car park at the Malak Community Square, Malak Shopping Centre to promote harmony and social cohesion to build a greater sense of community wellbeing.

If you are interested in attending any of the Community workshops that are on during May and June, read this newsletter to find out more detail. All workshops that are held by the Malak Community Shed aid in growing capacity to deliver community projects and services.

The Malak Community Shed would like to congratulate Jane Alia for receiving the 2013 Chief

Ministers Excellence in Youth Leadership Award earlier this year. Jane has been involved with

Darwin Community Arts for sometime and it is with pleasure that we support her endeavour to attend the IMPACT World Conference in South Africa in July this year. Jane will be comparing the next

Malak Community Dinner and has been donated a 4-burner Gas BBQ from Home

Hardware to be raffled off on the night. We wish her well in her efforts and we look forward to

seeing you at the dinner on the 27th May in Malak.

The Malakers, Darwin's newest community performance group, was invited to play for the Malak Community Celebration on the 9th of May in the park opposite the Malak Shopping Centre. The Malakers are an outcome of the Monday night music performance collaboration workshop where emerging artists have the opportunity to gain valuable performance skills while building relationships and gaining confidence in their craft. The group will be performing at the next Malak Community Dinner and have also been booked to play at World Refugee Day on the 16th of June at the Jingili Water Gardens.

City of Darwin helps out with health in our local Malak community

New community performance group takes to the big stage for the first time.

Held on Monday nights to coincide with the monthly community dinners on the last Monday of every month the music collaboration workshops are gaining popularity. The new Malak Studio rehearsal room is a buzz with emerging performers getting ready to perform at community events such as the City of Darwin Malak Community Celebration that was held at Holzerland Park opposite the Malak Shopping Centre last week. The Music Collaboration workshops are held between 6-8PM on Monday nights in the Malak Studio and are designed to help emerging artists gain performance skills and build confidence.

Handyman Workshops are held in the Underground car park of the Malak Community Square on Tuesday nights and are an opportunity for the community to learn basic trade skills including repairing, maintaining of bicycles thanks to Henry Harper (pictured above), fixing, building and painting things and using basic hand tools. The group is recycling old fridges to use as planter bays for the community garden. So come along, make friends and get involved in your community. Eagle Boys Pizzas are served and RSVPs are essential, we hope to see you there.

The Community Garden Club now meets on Wednesday evenings from 5-7PM due to the earlier sunset times of the dry season. Over ten (10) community groups currently use food from the garden on a regular basis. This month has seen the installation of a new garden edging for garden plot 2 and we would like to thank HB Blocks and Pavers for the donation of 50 Besser Blocks and Billy and the local youth from MREC to put them in place.

Shed Workshops FAQ’sWho can participate? All people over 15 years are able to participate in the community workshops no matter what cultural background or circumstance that you come from, all are welcome.

How do I register? Registration is easy, just contact Darwin Community Arts by phone or email direct, or talk to your support coordinator from the various service providers that are involved in the Community Shed Project.

What do I need to bring? An open mind and good spirits are all you need; however, covered footwear is an essential safety requirement for the Tools Trades and Tips workshops.

How much do workshops cost? All workshops are totally free thanks to the funding from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). All we ask is that you register and advise if you are unable to attend once registered.

What will I get from participating? What you get is totally up to you! The workshops are designed to encourage participation and to increase your skill base to help you in your home life. Referrals to training providers will be available to individuals that are interested in taking these skills further.

Can I contribute as a volunteer? Yes, if you are interested in sharing your skills and have something to contribute please contact the coordinator to discuss the potential.

Is there dinner provided? Yes, light supper and refreshments will be provided for most workshop so this is why registration is essential.

Late last month Jo and Kelly from KJS Entertainment were shocked to find a 2.5 metre Python curled up in the tree next to the entrance of the family entertainment centre. Parks and Wildlife Rangers were called to remove the reptile and were suspicions that it had been living in the underground car-park. A kitten was also discovered in the Underground last month malnourished and stressed. The cat has now been adopted by the Community Shed and is eating well and becoming accustomed to its new home. His name is “Shed-Cat” and he lives in the shed.

On Thursday nights Telecentro now opens its doors from 6-8PM. The Community Shed Computer workshops are hosted by the Darwin Seniors Computer Club and give the attendees the opportunity to have a mentor on hand to help with utilizing tools and programs that are now on offer on the world wide web. If you are emerging on the computer and are interested to learn more why not get involved. RSVPs are essential, call DCA for more information.
