Protecting Nadgengutta Creek Work has commenced to protect Nadgengutta Creek from the impacts of severe gully and stream bank erosion on the property “Nadgengutta” near Nerriga. The $120,000 project is a partnership between the landholders, David and Lynnette Nicholson and Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA), jointly funded by the Nicholsons and Catchment Action NSW. Southern Rivers CMA Catchment Officer, Frank Exon said over the next few weeks actively eroding sites on the property will be controlled by constructing rock ramps and diversion banks and shaping steep stream banks with an excavator. “A recycled organic mulch and soil conditioner will be spread on disturbed sites and seeded with native grass,” Mr Exon said. A 650 metre section of Nadgengutta Creek will be fenced out from stock and planted with native trees and shrubs over the coming spring and autumn, and a tank and trough system will be installed to provide stock with an alternative water supply to the Creek. David Nicholson said the project, which is visible from the Nerriga Road, has sparked a lot of local interest. “I went into Nerriga Pub the other day and the fellas asked me how I was growing all those rocks”. Over 800 tonnes of rock has been delivered to the property from the Nerriga quarry. The rock will be used in the construction of four rock ramps to control active gully heads on a number of tributaries of Nadgengutta Creek. “Left untreated these gully heads would have progressively released hundreds of cubic metres of sediment into Nadgengutta Creek impacting on water quality and stream habitat,” Mr Exon said. “The rock ramps have been designed to

control the active gully erosion and safely manage flood discharges from one in 20 year storm events.” The project has been over a year in the development. A review of environmental factors by Southern Rivers CMA identified and considered a range of potential impacts from the project relating to Aboriginal cultural heritage, threatened species and ecological communities, and other environmental considerations. The project was also designed to avoid impact on the Eastern Gas Pipeline and a major optic fibre cable running through the property.“The interesting aspect to this project has been navigating all the variables to make it happen,” said Mr Exon. “Two Aboriginal cultural heritage sites were found within the area of project works. Site officers from the Ulladulla Local Aboriginal Lands Council (ULALC) have worked with Southern Rivers CMA staff. An ULALC site officer will be present when earthworks are undertaken to ensure their preservation and long term protection.” The Catchment Protection Scheme is a partnership project between Southern Rivers CMA, Sydney Catchment Authority, the Land and Property Management Authority and interested landholders in the Upper Shoalhaven and Hawkesbury Nepean catchments. Landholders interested in finding out more about the Catchment Protection Scheme in the Upper Shoalhaven and Kangaroo River catchments should contact Southern Rivers CMA Braidwood on (02) 4842 2594.

Windellama Landcare Goulburn Treechangers get a $7,000 boost

Goulburn Mulwaree is set to benefit from the NSW Government’s new Regional Relocation Scheme which is available to those who relocate from metropolitan NSW to regional areas.

Under legislation which passed through State Parliament late last week, the one-off $7,000 grants will be paid to individuals or families who sell their homes in metropolitan NSW and buy or build a new home worth up to $600,000 in regional NSW.

The grant aims to encourage population and economic growth in regional NSW and help close the city-country divide. It will also assist Sydney as it faces massive population growth over the next 30 years creating greater congestion on roads and public transport and pressure on house prices.

Starting 1 July 2011 for the next four years, Treechangers who relocate from the Sydney metropolitan area, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Gosford, Wyong, Wollondilly, Wollongong or Newcastle Local Government Areas to regional NSW can apply for the grant.

Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Geoff Kettle is really excited by the scheme which he feels is a great opportunity for Goulburn to continue to evolve and to assist new residents to move to our region.

“This new incentive really fits into our Economic Development model and will complement our Treechanger working group’s efforts to promote Goulburn Mulwaree as a Treechanger destination.” Cr Kettle said.

“Communities across regional NSW including Goulburn Mulwaree offer lower costs of living but with facilities, cultural events, food and wine equal to or even better than Sydney.”

“Goulburn Mulwaree is a regional hub in NSW and is a great place to live, work and raise a family. These $7,000 grants will provide extra assistance to families planning to move away from the busy city and the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas.”

“There are a host of new residential developments emerging in Goulburn Mulwaree, providing even more affordable

accommodation for both new and existing residents. Treechangers will realise the value for money when they look at the real estate options and prices in our region, combined with the lower cost of living.”

Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Strategic Projects Officer Debbi Rodden said that Goulburn Mulwaree has already been identified as a Treechanger destination due to its location.

“More and more people are relocating to the Goulburn Mulwaree area to enjoy the country lifestyle, while benefiting from the easily accessible and increasing range of businesses in the region. This grant is yet another of the many incentives to encourage people to move to this region.”

“With more businesses moving to the region, more employment opportunities are created. Goulburn’s great location also enables an easy ‘commutable’ distance between Goulburn and Canberra for further employment and education opportunities.”

What To Do If Your Partner Succumbs To Shopping Binges - (Part 3)

Create A Budget, Goals, And An Action Plan. Now is the time to design and/or revise your budget. It is important to make sure that you allow enough funds to cover all known expenditures and unexpected events, while ensuring enough stretch for an odd shopping spree. One of your goals may be to totally eliminate these shopping expeditions, but it still may be more rational to put aside some funds for these- at least for a little while.

With a clear financial picture you can realistically determine how much money can be allotted to your house fund, and you can determine when you will be ready to purchase your home/property.

This information can now be translated into a goal. A savings timetable can once again be established and be reviewed regularly to avoid the build up of pressures.

Other goals may also be explored which include making time for fun and recreation ( as you can budget for this ) and ensuring that the lines of communication always stay open. Also there may be goals that have emerged from the conversations you have had with your partner.

To help you attain your goals you can draw up an action plan which outlines the steps you will take, the time frames you will attempt to adhere to and the supports that will help keep you both on track.

Keep the Lines of Communication Open. Although communication has already been mentioned above it deserves a double focus. Your partner until now has suffered in silence and has not been able to share their ‘problem’ with you, leaving you in the dark, slowly building resentments and even toying with the idea of ending the relationship.

With the channels now open your partner can be encouraged to share the thoughts that drive

their actions. You can discuss their fears and anxieties and work with them in ridding these demons from their mind. You can feel reassured that they are working hard on changing their behaviours and are maintaining their commitment to buy a property with you.

And just as they can talk to you, you can talk to them.

Direct Action. The way now is open for direct action. You and your partner can develop specific strategies to help them avoid the temptation of a shopping binge. When the urge hits perhaps they can contact you, and you can together discuss what force is behind this impulse. Shopping binges may be replaced with more safe activities as a movie or a special meal. And changes to your partner’s thought patterns might strengthen their resolve.

When your partner feels confident and ready they can make a commitment to do all that is necessary to control their shopping binges and save money to buy a house. And you in turn can commit to helping them in any way to attain this goal.

Being able to address issues as they emerge in relationships not only strengthens the bond between couples, but also establishes a precedent for working through future concerns if and when they emerge. Every relationship is unique, but there are certain problem themes that relationships are more prone to experience, and so there is always room to learn from other couples who have shared similar concerns and have learned how to address them.
