-Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee seceded from the Union (now 11 states in the CSA)

People thought the war would be “a picnic”

Troops on both sides were inexperienced – Why?

Union troops retreated

(Lincoln asks 500,000 more men to enlist for next battle)

1.) Cut off trade by blockading southern ports.

2.) Cut the Confederacy in TWO by taking control of Mississippi River

3.) Capture the Confederate Capital at Richmond, VA
