Background / National Context

• Spatial and temporal distribution of

fresh water resources

• Rapid population growth rates:

o Total pop: 34.8m; 28.4% (rural)

• Uncontrolled environmental

degradation

o Decline in water levels;

o Increased treatment costs

• Rural safe water coverage: 65%

o Inappropriate technologies

o High pressure on limited resources

o 35% of population lives in water stressed areas

Main results & Lessons (Cont’d)

Results:

• Plan to scale up innovation by

Gov’t

• Increased access to water

• Increased water reliability

• Increased water levels

• Permanent settlements

Le 7ème Forum du // 7th Forum of the Rural Water Supply Network : Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (29.11.2016 – 02.12.2016)

Conclusions & recommendations

• Sand dams are appropriate for areas with:

o seasonal rivers

o low groundwater potential

• Significant buy-in is important from:

o politicians, professionals and community

• Sites for sand dams should consider both technical & social

aspects

• Sand dams require intensive supervision

• It is important to take into account the impact of sand

deposition onto the flood plain as this reduces its water

holding capacity.
