Congratulations to our newly inducted
Student Leaders
We began our final term of the year with our
Commencement assembly, where we admit Year
11 students officially into the HSC course and
become Year 12 as well as announcing and
inducting our student leaders for the next twelve
months. I work very closely with the student
leadership team and I am very much looking
forward to working with such a splendid team of
young people, under the leadership and
guidance of Miss Rachael Shakespeare. Our
student leaders undertake a very stringent merit
selection process and they all thoroughly
deserve this recognition. Congratulations to our
Captains, Mabel Truong and Farid Faruq, Vice
Captains, Tegan Sharma and Isaac Tiata and
the Prefect team: Shivaun Narayan, Renee
Naidu, Rosanna Tupou, Maheen Imran,
Taneesha Singh, Kenya Tavui, Maliha Hoque,
Zen Obeido, Ashutosh Mishra, Jai Sharma,
Abdul Kanj, Avish Sharma, Matthew Dy and
Nathaniel Tran. I would also like to thank Miss
Shakespeare for her outstanding support of our
student leaders.
End of Term and the Vacation
We are fast approaching the end of the academic
year and I would like to take this opportunity to

remind parents of the need to complete an
application for Extended Leave – Travel, should
they wish to take their children away from school
during term time. When completing the
application, please provide an explanation as to
the reason for the travel and supply any relevant
documentary materials. Family holidays do not
come under the reasons for approval, according
to the Department’s guidelines.
If students are going to be absent for extended
periods at the very end of the year or start of
2018, a letter needs to be provided indicating
that you wish the child’s place at the school to be
held for them. We cannot hold the place if we do
not have this documentation. This is especially
critical if students are overseas during the annual
break but are delayed in returning. If you have
any questions about the requirements, please
contact the school on 9605 3111.
End of Year Events – Advance Notice
As the year comes to a close, I would like you to
consult our calendar for any significant events
that relate to you and your child. We love having
parents in attendance at the Semester Awards
(November 30), Presentation Day (December
11), our Art Exhibition and Ensembles function
(November 29) and the LEAPS Graduation
(November 29). Invitations will arrive in due
course!!
Term 4 is a very busy term at Macquarie Fields
HS and the run up to Christmas and the New
Year is hectic for everyone! That said, I am very
proud to be the principal of such a dynamic and
innovative school. It is an honour and a privilege.
I hope to see you at one or more of our events.
Mrs J Dolstra
Principal

CAPA Faculty
The Creative and Performing Arts Faculty have
enjoyed a very busy 2017 to date. The faculty
consists of Ms Langely (Visual Arts), Ms Tran
(Music & Assistant Year Advisor), Mr Bozzetto
(Music), Mr Lee (Music), Ms Kensett (Drama),
Mrs Davidson (Visual Arts and CAPA Relieving
Head Teacher) and Mrs Metcalfe (Visual Arts
and CAPA Relieving Head Teacher).
All the CAPA staff are passionate about the arts
and understand the connections that are made
between the students in our classrooms and the
community. The arts enrich our students’ lives;
bringing communities together and enhancing
cultural awareness. A strong arts program
promotes the skills students need to be
successful and skilled our students most
certainly are! We are very proud of all our
Creative and Performing Arts students and their
achievements in 2017.
Being exposed to the arts sharpens critical and
creative thinking, promotes self-directed learning,
improves school attendance, helps with critical
thinking, improves confidence, concentration,
motivation and teamwork. What more could we
ask for?
Our students have successfully been involved in
many different learning opportunities both in and
out of the classroom and within the wider
community. Here is a sample of what we have
been involved in:
Music
Year 11 Boys Vocal Workshop - Several of our
Year 11 boys were part of The NSW Arts Unit
initiative in which they rehearsed and recorded
'Throw Your Arms Around Me’ by Hunters &
Collectors, in a combined primary/secondary
choir at the ABC professional recording studios.

Fire in the Fields - Our Ukulele Ensemble and
Junior/Senior Rock bands performed at the
annual ‘Fire in the Fields’ concerts at Ingleburn
High School in August. A great achievement and
experience for these students.
The Cross Network concert was held in
September and we had over 40 students
involved in this amazing opportunity. Students
participated in music workshops and learned
performance pieces, for the performance nights
held at Bankstown Sports Club. Our very own
Mrs Davidson was the Cross network co-
ordinator for this special event. The students
loved this performance experience.
Combined Choir - In Concert Performance.
Our vocal ensemble performed in the In concert
performance in May. Students, performed with
Felix Riebl. Reibl is an internationally recognised
singer, songwriter and composer. This was an
amazing experience for our students, the
atmosphere in the Sydney Town hall was
amazing and our students were all smiles.
At school in class time-
We have had our amazing Music, Drama and
Visual Arts Year 12 classes work on their Drama
& Music performances and their Body of Work
submissions for the Higher School Certificate.
Below are a couple of photos of Year 12 Visual
Arts student works by Simon Bernardo and
Cynthia Nahn.
We look forward to hearing about their results in
December.

Mrs Metcalfe’s & Mrs Davidson’s Year 10 Visual
Arts students have been enjoying working on
their large paper mache sculptures inspired by
the famous American artist Keith Haring. In this
unit of work students learnt about Street art and
the restoration project of Keith Haring’s
Melbourne mural. Students of this class look
forward to creating their own installation of
sculptures to be on display in our annual art
exhibition to be held in Week 8 in our school hall.
Mrs Metcalfe’s Year 11 students have been
experimenting with the following expressive
mediums, oil and acrylic paint, clay and wire.
Students studied artists such as Ben Quilty,
Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Pablo
Picasso amongst others and created their very
own luscious thickly painted portraits and
beautiful flowing and curvaceous, small ceramic
sculptures, whilst studying the topic the Human
Form in Visual Arts. There is definitely some
talent in the class!

some beautiful Still life and Self Portrait artworks
using acrylic paint, mixed media and watercolour.

Variety Night 2017
What a blast we had in June with our Rock
Gods and Pop Divas Variety Night. The annual
event is a highlight and tradition at Macquarie
Fields High School. It was a showstopper!
Students in Year 7-12 were involved in this whole
school performance opportunity. They performed
in a variety of acts, singing, dancing, playing
bands. They entertained their peers and
parents. We had wonderful support from parents
and the local community. The CAPA staff would
also like to thank Mrs Dolstra, Mr Perrett and Mrs
Costa for their support of this event. The stage
looked amazing with the special lighting provided
by Macarthur Events, which Mrs Metcalfe
organised.
Nagoya Sister Exchange Art Exhibition
Four of our Visual Arts students had their works
selected for The Nagoya Art Exchange
Exhibition. It is the 39th year this Sister and
Friendship City Children’s Art and Calligraphy
Exhibition has been held in Nagoya, Japan.
These talented art students had works selected
out of 100 nominations within 30 Public Schools
from NSW who participated. The works will be
exhibited in Nagoya, Sydney, Los Angeles,
Mexico and Ninjing. Our talented artists are Paul
Dowling, Sabriyah Arshad, Bill He and Clarisse
Vargas.

Fishers Ghost Art Exhibition
Ms Langley, Mrs Davidson and Mrs Melfcalfe
are very proud to have 15 entries in the 2017
Fishers Ghost Exhibition to be displayed in the
Campbelltown Art Gallery. Our students from
Year 7-12 have ceramics, paintings, mixed
media and photography works on display. Our
Year 9 students will be attending this exhibition
on an excursion in Week 9. Students will be able
to observe, learn and evaluate many works by
local school students.
Art Club has been running at lunch times where
dedicated and interested students have devoted
their own time to painting and revamping the
large murals outside the art block. Students have
been able to come up with their own
compositions and subject matter under the
guidance of Ms Langley. Felipe, Adam, Shayek,
James, Jan, Farid, Rosemary, Liba, Caitlin and
Pritha have all been making contributions to the
murals.
Other things our students have been involved
in include:
Our Concert Band and String
Ensemble, performed at Ingleburn Alive,
Anzac Day Ceremony and Celebration
Day under the guidance of Ms Tran and
Mrs Davidson.
The formation of the Junior and Senior
Rock bands under the guidance of Mrs
Davidson and Mr Bozzetto. This group
also performed at the Semester Awards
assembly.
Simon Bernardo performed at Ingleburn
Alive and Rotary Clubs 40th Anniversary
dinner.
Awen Davidson and Nikki Amos went to
the NSW State Music camp and
performed in the NSW Public Schools
Choir.
We look forward to seeing Sebastian
Kelly-Toiava perform as a solo vocalist at
the School Spectacular in November. This
is an amazing opportunity for Sebastian
and we wish him well for his
performances. We also will be in the
audience of the School Spectacular to
support our Vocal Ensemble members
who are singing in the combined schools
choir.
We have our ensembles night and annual
art exhibition still to come in Week 8 of
this Term.

I think come December 15 there will be some
very tired but satisfied and dedicated CAPA
teachers who will be ready for a holiday. We
really have enjoyed all our CAPA experiences in
2017 and we look forward to sharing all our
expertise and knowledge with our students again
in 2018. We truly are inspired by our students
and their interest, in our Creative and Performing
Arts subjects.
I would like to leave you with some quotes that
help me explain what it is about our connection
and our love of the arts.
