July 11: the Monster Within— the hidden side of Motherhood

In our child-centered culture, women often strive to be perfect mothers. When conflicts arise between the needs of mothers and the needs of their children, they are ashamed and frightened when they experience the inevitable negative thoughts or feelings toward their offspring. Author Dr. Barbara Almond discusses the spectrum of maternal feelings and behaviors and the measures that can be taken to increase tolerance of the difficulties of motherhood. Dr. Almond, a psychotherapist in private practice, is Emeritus Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University and the mother of three sons.

A German army nurse in WWI, she marries Jewish surgeon Carl Rother after he converts to Catholicism. To Elisabeth’s dismay, Renate, their racially impure daughter, grows up, marries Jewish professor Dische, and has two children, a boy too intelligent for his own good and a rebellious daughter, Irene. In the formidable voice of her grandmother, author Dische pushes the boundaries of autobiographical fiction in a novel that is and is not based on her family history.

Hawaiian music is HAPA-ning at the PJCC. Affectionately dubbed the “sound of Maui,” nobody presents the pleasing melodies of Polynesia like HAPA. Billboard magazine calls these international artists “Hawaii’s hottest group!” Say “Aloha” to summer and spend a relaxing evening at our very own “poolside” resort for this private concert. No swimming.

Top Ten Reasons to SHOP the Foster City Farmers’ Market:

10. Support our state and local economies. Farmers’ Market produce is grown in California—so the money remains in our community and stimulates the local economy.

9. Learn about the produce you buy. Ask farmers where it was grown, what variety it is and get cooking suggestions.

8. Discover different varieties of produce. Produce that’s bred for flavor, not its ability to travel.

7. Support local farmers. Farmers’ Market farmers get the whole dollar (vs. commercial farmers, who get just .25 from each dollar’s worth of produce sold).

6. Reduce your carbon footprint. Purchasing locally grown produce saves fuel and resources otherwise spent on long distance shipping.

5. Enjoy delicious fresh produce. Picked ripe and sold within a day or two. Supermarket produce can travel up to two weeks, which compromises flavor.

4. Help preserve open spaces. Working farms do this without using tax dollars.

3. Connect with your community. Visit with farmers, mingle with neighbors and meet new people.

2. Enjoy the beauty (and variety!) of fresh flowers. The types of flowers at Farmers’ Markets vary with the season, but they’re always beautiful.
