News from Wendover Health Centre 01296 623452

6 www.wendover-news.co.uk July 2012

Wendover Police Station

Changes to our opening hours The surgery will close at 1pm on Wednesday 18 July for staff training. Otherwise our normal opening hours apply during July.

Car parking We are grateful to local residents for vacating the Health Centre car park during our opening hours, yet the car park is getting busier and is frequently full. It is of course important that those who are unwell or frail can have easy access to the building. It would therefore be tremendously helpful if you can leave your car at home or elsewhere and walk to the Health Centre. We particularly ask that you do not park in the Health Centre car park when picking up children from local schools.

Being safe in the sun We saw several cases of sunburn during the spell of hot weather at the

end of May. There are a number of ways that you can prevent sunburn and stay safe while you are out in the sun. For example:

• wear clothing to protect your skin,

such as a long-sleeve shirt, trousers and a wide-brimmed hat

• wear good-quality sunglasses to

protect your eyes

• keep babies and children out of direct sunlight

• use sunscreen that has a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 (use a higher SPF for fair and sensitive skin), and reapply it every 2-3 hours and after bathing.

However, spending a certain amount of time in the sun can be beneficial as it provides your body with vitamin D, which is needed to keep bones and teeth healthy. In summer, spending about 10-15 minutes three times a week in the sun without sunscreen during the

middle of day will provide sufficient vitamin D for most people. Sunbeds are not recommended for boosting vitamin D levels.

Five tips for losing weight There’s no easy fix for losing weight and fad diets are just that. To lose weight we recommend:

•Have regular, balanced meals and cut down on food and drink that are high in fat or sugar. Include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily

•Adjust your portion sizes and eat slowly.

•Exercise regularly

•Share your goals with your family and

friends

•Keep it slow and steady: aim to lose 1-2 pounds (half to 1 kg) per week.

This is the perfect time to be sitting in the beautiful historic cobbled courtyard of the Farmers’ Bar in the King’s Head in Market Square, Aylesbury. Here you can enjoy any one of the fabulous beers from The Chiltern Brewery or their guest ales from the unique beer menu and sample sumptuous lunchtime food.

Can women really brew better beer? is the question that lies at the heart of the Farmers’ Bar’s latest themed celebration of beers. Brewsters, female brewers, have had a crucial role in the development of beer throughout history and are now the power and inspiration behind many micro-breweries in the UK. Come along and you may be able to try such wonderful offerings as Pressed Rat & Warthog from Triple fff and Outlandish Pale ale from Offbeat. Many of the beers are brewed to appeal to women drinkers too, so it could be a bit of an eye opener. The beers are very popular so please see www.chilternbrewery.co.uk for up to date information or call the Farmers’ Bar on 01296 718812.

There is a fantastic beer menu at the Farmers’ Bar with select single casks of guest beers in addition to the brewery classics Chiltern Ale and Beechwood Bitter and their amazing limited edition beers including the Jubilee Ale, the bottled version of which recently won great plaudits on national television. Wendover Arm Trust Christmas Card Competition After the success of the previous competition we are looking for an image to put on the front of our 2012 Christmas card which we will sell to raise funds to restore the canal. The image, be it a photograph, painting, drawing, or any other artistic medium that can be turned into a .jpeg file, must be on the theme of ‘The Wendover Arm Canal at Christmas time’. It can be one individual image or a montage suitable for either portrait or landscape presentation. Competition entries must be in by 15 September to allow for judging and printing. The winner will be given 5 packs of 10 cards and will have their name and contact phone number or email address/web site (if wanted) printed on the reverse of each card. Please submit entries, to Jill Pearce, 15 Halton Village, HP22 5NS or as an email attachment to [email protected]. For hard copy, please enclose a suitable stamped addressed envelope if you want the art work returned. By submitting an entry, you are stating that you own the copyright to the picture and that you are giving us full and unlimited permission to use the picture for the purposes above and any other promotional efforts in the future. If there are any questions, please contact Jill via the email address as above.

Walk an Arm’s Length On Sunday 2 September, Johanna Wheal will be “Walking an Arm’s Length” from Wendover to Bulbourne dressed in traditional canal costume to raise money for the restoration of the Wendover Arm. Can you join Johanna and Walk an Arm’s Length? Please register with us today at www.wendoverarmwalk.org.uk or register in person at Christopher Pallet. Johanna will be one of hundreds of walkers who will walk 6¾ miles from Wendover to Bulbourne along the historic waterway that is the Wendover Arm. The day aims to be the biggest fundraising event for 2012, a target of £25,000 has been set. It costs £400 to restore 1 metre of canal using modern engineering solutions.

The outfit dates from the 1800’s and was worn by women working on the narrow boats It has long sleeves and a long skirt and was designed to keep the sun away from the head and face. Johanna is an enthusiastic member and fundraiser for Wendover Arm Trust and has already raised over £350 to date. To sponsor Johanna, visit her fundraising page http://goo.gl/D6Cf6 or send a cheque made payable to Wendover Arm Trust to Johanna’s Walk, 467 Bideford Green, Linslade, Beds, LU7 2TZ.

Winners There were several opportunities to win prizes associated with Wendover Celebrates over the Jubilee weekend. Here are those reported so far to Wendover News:

Logo Aces High framed the logo created by Sophie Francis-Baker so that she could have it as a memento and it was presented to her at Wendover Celebrates afternoon.

Window Competition Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce challenged anyone with a window in the centre of Wendover to dress it for the occasion. The standard was very high with many people reading or chuckling their way from South Street, to Back Street, Tring Road and Aylesbury Road as well as the High Street. With great difficulty, the judges finally decided to award the Magnum of Champagne prize to Eileen’s Flowers in Tring Road. They wanted more prizes as they would have liked to have made awards in several categories.

Parade The judging of the Parade was equally difficult. In the end there were two winners: the walkers from John Hampden School who wore an exuberant variety of Jubilee themed costumes and the Mid-Bucks Bee Keepers’ Association float which was a Queen Bee themed extravaganza. It was very clear to all spectators just how much effort had gone into every single entry in the Parade.

It’s a Knockout This event proved extremely popular with competitors and spectators alike. The teams fought very hard but we hope that the final result was prescient with Team GB supplied by the RAF Regiment from Halton, the overall winners. It’s good to know that our armed forces are in excellent shape.

Wendover Youth Club would like to say a big thank you to our Red Bus sponsors, Harpenden Building Society, Chiltern Way Federation and Ferdinand de Rothschild Chapter No. 2420. Without your support our spectacular entrance in the Wendover Celebrates parade would not have been possible. Congratulations to Katy G who won our Guess the Jelly Beans in the Jar, and to Charlotte B who guessed the Name of the Teddy Bear at our charity stall. Thank you also to the Wendover Celebrates Committee and volunteers. If anyone has any photos of the bus in the parade could they please forward a copy to our email address [email protected]

Wendover really did celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in style. We were amazed when we looked out from Wendover Evening WI in the parade and saw so many people crowding the streets, and then pouring into the school grounds for the rest of the day.

No sooner had the 'tea tent' opened, than a queue started to form, and, true to English style, it was very orderly! Cakes of every variety, baked by the WI and Churches Together, were there to tempt, and tea and coffee were dispensed with great speed. As cakes disappeared, plates were promptly refilled with new ones and so this tea tent kept going throughout the entire afternoon.

Thanks must go to all who participated and helped in any way, but congratulations and many more thanks to the organising team for Wendover Celebrates. They deserve a well earned rest. Marilyn Storer, Morag Corrigan, Ann Shepherd

Wendover Twinning Association would like to thank those who played palets breton and bought raffle tickets at Wendover Celebrates as all the proceeds go towards entertaining our French guests when they come to Wendover, the support is appreciated. It was a wonderful tribute to Her Majesty and a worthy successor to the old Wendover Carnival.

Barbara Jefford

A big thank you to all who supported Bega Kwa Bega at Wendover Celebrates, it was a huge success in terms of raising awareness and information sharing. Hundreds of leaflets were handed out and many conversations took place with people interested in finding out more. We are working hard to raise money for a much needed mobile clinic that visits communities in rural areas around Kampala and beyond who would otherwise not be able to access medical help. We plan another fundraising event in the Autumn so watch this space. If you would like to help with any fund raising events or have any ideas you would like to share with us, we would be delighted to hear from you. If you

No2 Pound Street is very proud to have sponsored and been a part of such a great community event. We

extend our thanks to the tireless efforts of the organising committees in creating Wendover Celebrates and making it such a successful event with an enormous turnout and well done for arranging the sunshine, we were very grateful.

Thank you to everyone who supported No2 at Wendover Celebrates – takeaway deli platters and English fizz flew off the stand all day. Thanks also to Emma, June, Heather and Vicki – ladies, you are amazing and we could not have done it without you!

Kings Farm Shop was delighted to be a sponsor of Wendover Celebrates and to supply the sausages, burgers and hog roast. A big thank you to all the volunteers, mostly associated with Wendover Junior Football Club, who served from 12 noon to 10pm. A special thank you to Adam who carved the pigs so expertly and efficiently.

Logistics and Supply Training Squadron did a superb job building the Wendover Beacon. The students experienced first hand the sense of pride and value the local community has for the Royal Air Force. Trainees and staff alike enjoyed the satisfaction of a job well done and soaked up the festival atmosphere of the evening event, even joining in with dancing once their building role was complete. In Wendover, Gilly Franklin, Slimming World Consultant, chose the Youth Centre for her meetings. The group has grown and is just what she wanted it to be - a community evening where her ethos is "all come along, join in, have a cup of tea or coffee and get to know each other, network and embrace the common ground that all members have, which is to lose those pounds that have crept up over the months and years."

Gilly has a local family in her group: the Weaving family from Halton. They have a special wedding in September - Mia and Grant are getting married. Sharon Weaving is the mum along with daughter Naomi, son Kyle and of course the groom Grant who have all been attending the Slimming World group at Wendover and in 6 months have lost over 10 stone between them and still going. Mia has got to her target weight but still attends as she now is a life member for FREE!

It’s important to Gilly that her group is seen as a community group. She chose the Youth Centre as she has seen Dr Riley constantly trying to raise funds for the youth of Wendover and so made this a priority to give to Wendover what she considers a fantastic opportunity for the village. There are many different ages in the group the youngest being 13, with some 6th formers from the John Colet School, some pensioners and they all get along famously. From 13 years to 68 years of age all are welcome.

If you would like to join Gilly she is at the Youth Centre Wednesdays 7.30pm to 9pm 52 weeks a year! Come along and see her and the rest of Wendover getting slimmer and loving the opportunity not only to live longer, feel better about them se lves bu t to m eet o thers . Con tac t [email protected] or call her on 0773 888 2736.

Wendover Art Club Spring Exhibition This popular event was held over the Diamond Jubilee weekend at Library Room, Wendover. Over 70 pictures were on display from twenty different artists and the subjects and media used was wide and varied. As usual the "vote for your favourite" picture drew in plenty of entries and the winning picture was "Rocky" a pastel drawing by Joyce Lecomber. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the Show either by viewing or purchasing and don't forget there will be another Exhibition later in the year when we look forward to seeing you.

Wendover Swimming Association The new membership year for Wendover Swimming Association starts on Sunday 1 July, and many thanks to all those who have already renewed. Your membership cards will be available shortly. If you would like to renew your membership, or want to join WSA, the application form can be downloaded from the website (see below) and copies are available at Wendover Pool during WSA swimming sessions (session times are also on the website). The Wendover Pool HP22 6HF is on the Wendover schools campus, past the John Colet School. Completed forms can be left, with your subscription, at the Pool during a WSA swimming session and you are welcome to swim at the same time.

WSA has held its prices for next year, so memberships will again cost £20 for an adult; £15 for those under 18 years old and £30 for a family. Swimming charges are also held at £2 for an adult and £1.50 for those under 18 and pensioners (under 4s swim free) .

The Association exists solely to provide swimming facilities in the community and all surplus funds are used to contribute to the costs of the Wendover Pool. In the year to 30 June WSA has again made a significant financial contribution which has used up a large amount of reserves, so the Association needs to replenish its reserves to enable it to help out with unexpected or major expenditure at the Wendover Pool. The WSA Committee is aware that many members pay a subscription each year in order to support the WSA and the Committee is very grateful to these members who might not swim very often or at all but who like to support swimming in Wendover. In the coming year, the Committee would be particularly grateful to anyone who feels able to join to support the WSA’s work or who would like to make a donation to support the WSA and help rebuild its reserves. www.wendoverswimmingassociation.co.uk

the bees laid some stores down they have then had to eat them to survive the next cold and wet spell. Thank you to everyone who visited our stand at Wendover Celebrates, it was by far the busiest event we have attended in many years. The new Beekeepers practical sessions at the training Apiary complete this month and preparations have already started for the 2013 course, full details of the course and other Association activities can be found at www.mbbka.org.uk.

Wendover Tennis and Squash Club The tennis and squash junior camps commence on Monday 30 July with a variety of different programmes running throughout August, for further details go to www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk.

The Village Cup There have been some very close games in the Village Cup and results are in the Wendover News July web update With a number of games left to play, in League A Dragons are top with the Jolly Boys runners up. In League B Sharkey’s Sharks win it and Wellhead Old Boys are currently second although the remaining game pits them against the Tradesmen who could just pip them. The winners of each league play the runners up in the other. The weather may have delayed the semis & final, the latter scheduled for Saturday 30 June.

Wendover Cricket Club Full details of the games played by Wendover 1st XI and the 2nd XI are available on www.wendover-news.co.uk

The juniors have been attending practices in good numbers despite lots of poor weather. U7 & 9’s on Saturdays has proved popular with over 40 regularly attending. Many matches have been cancelled due to the weather or by the opposition and the U15’s are yet to play a game.

The under 14's continued their good start to the season winning away at Ley Hill. Wendover finished their 20 overs on 137 for 5, with Ben (superman) Williamson smashing 52 before having to retire, ably supported by the rest of the team particularly newcomer Jack Beech, who in only his 3rd match hit a very handy 24. Ley Hill crashed to 66 all out, with the highlight being an incredible diving catch by Rory Lavery.

New players of any age and ability are always welcome and should contact Club Captain Jonathan Seabrook on 01296-623286 or 07718-804 084 for more information.

Halton Tennis Centre has summer camps starting on 23 & 30 July Book online at www.haltontennis.co.uk.

PSYCHIC READINGS

Page 16: July 2012 Wendover News

Driving in Wendover Where has common courtesy gone? For some time I've been very disappointed at the lack of courtesy shown by drivers in Wendover and the local area. Because the roads in Wendover are a little narrow in places, I often find myself giving way to oncoming traffic by waiting at the end of a row of parked vehicles. Interestingly, there is a myth that this is a requirement laid down in the Highway Code. What I find most disappointing is that far too often this goes without acknowledgement. This doesn’t appear to apply to any particular age or gender. I do hope that this is not a developing trend among locals in Wendover. Surely if someone is prepared to wait to let you through ahead of them, they deserve some recognition, a wave, a nod, a quick flash of the lights. It's not much to ask, is it?

St Mary’s Churchyard The St Mary’s Churchyard Care team want to thank the guys from the Hampden and Wendover Lodge, locals from the White Swan, Pat Kernan’s Tree Surgeons, and Nick Taylor, Landscape Gardener Extraordinaire, who cut and strimmed their way around the top area of the churchyard on the Jubilee weekend. All this at a time when lots of other events were revving up. Thanks chaps, it was heartening to see and has made our

task a lot easier these coming months. Well done. Bryan Reading Editor’s comment: Nick Taylor was also heavily involved in the Coombe Hill Run

Coombe Hill Run Paul and Mel, of The White Swan Public House, would like to thank our regulars who entered the ‘Coombe Hill Run’ and raised in excess of £1400 for the two nominated charities; Appledown Rescue & Rehoming Kennels and The PACE Centre. In addition thanks is extended to the company support received from Alliotts, JFC Group & Dove Networks, with great appreciation to ‘Vale of Aylesbury Athletic Club’ for, yet again, organising the event ~ may it ever continue!

Gary Thorne Editor’s comment: full details of the June 2012 Coombe Hill Run can be found on:http://www.coombehillrun.org.uk/ thanks to the Vale of Aylesbury Athletic club who organises this event. James Clark of The Swan was the first Wendover resident home.

forty years service to the Wendover Parish Council. In April a very splendid invitation arrived from the Lord Chamberlain, commanded by H.M. Queen to invite me. My elder Son, Richard, whom I nominated to accompany me, also received the invite.

On 29 May after a spell at the hairdressers Richard arrived, we had lunch, changed and left by car. We arrived at Buckingham Palace at 3.15 p.m. We had a delicious tea and then Her Majesty arrived together with the Duke, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Cambridge, the Kents and Princess Alexandra. We were within five yards of the Queen but did not meet her.

It was a very grand and memorable occasion. All the visitors were so friendly and courteous. I met Bishop John of Oxford and his wife, Wendy. We also chatted to many other people and walked around the splendid Gardens. The Queen treated us to an ice cream, after which we returned home. What a wonderful experience!!!

Chain shops in Wendover I have lived in Wendover for 12 years, have brought up a young family here, and we all love our beautiful village. My concern is that Wendover is slowly becoming a ghost town. I have seen the local bank close and stay vacant, the travel agent, the book shop, the

shoe shop, and most notably Rossini's.

With such high rent and rates asked for these premises I fully understand why local businesses cannot consider them viable. Why I am concerned is that by deterring 'chains' bringing their business into Wendover, it is actually damaging our little village rather than helping it.

I for one would most welcome the old Rossini building becoming a high end chain family restaurant such as 'ASK', Pizza Express, or 'Zizis', and feel this would bring additional trade to the village. Hemel Old Town has such 'chains' and it’s still a lovely place to visit with many restaurants thriving together.

I agree we don’t require 'chain' coffee shops as we have many fabulous establishments already. However, existing restaurants such as the wonderful Le Bistro (where we eat regularly), and of course our many great pubs that serve food, may actually see increased trade if such chains appear due to the additional foot traffic. People would come from further afield to dine in Wendover as there would be greater choice.

It would be most interesting to hear from other Wendover residents and business owners for their views on the subject.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Centre Aylesbury High School has run a growing and ever popular Duke of Edinburgh Award program for over 25 years. Recently, AHS became a Directly Licensed Centre (DLC), allowing the school to run this program independent of the umbrella of Bucks CC. On 25 June, South-East Duke of Edinburgh Award Regional Director Christian Scott presented the Licence Certificate at the School Governors’ meeting.

To attain a Duke of Edinburgh Award, participants have to take part in a physical activity and develop a life skill of their choice. They also have to volunteer and undertake an expedition. The Award assists participants in developing and building on a wide range of personal qualities while discovering new skills.

Bucks CC has unwaveringly supported Aylesbury High School students, enabling them to achieve exceptionally high standards in all that they do to earn their Awards. D of E Manager at Aylesbury High School, Richard Torpey said, “Receiving our own licence is testament to the dedication of all the staff, parents and former students who give their time and expertise so freely to make this special award program possible. “

Diamond Jubilee Garden Party On behalf of Florence Nightingale Hospice and Florrie’s Children Hospice, I would like to thank everyone who donated to and supported this event. Despite dismal weather many people came along and enjoyed Pimms, Sparkling wine, cakes and afternoon tea. We had advertised a relaxed and welcoming environment which I hope it was, maybe just add damp into the equation!

Dolly Savile (Wendover News Local Face May 2002) opened the event and stayed to share a glass of champagne with us all. You did a fantastic job Dolly, thank you.

I would especially like to thank Lin the manager of Wendover Hospice shop, who was a great support to me and printed all my posters and everything

else I required. She will be sadly missed by all the volunteers and all our customers.

Overall due to everyone’s generosity we managed to raise £875.00. Again I can’t thank everyone enough for supporting this worthy cause despite the English summer weather.

Local Face: Lin Seely

July 2012 www.wendover-news.co.uk 19

Gerlinde (Lin) Baier was born on a cold summer’s day in July 1964 in a town close to the Bavarian borders in Austria. Shortly afterwards, her parents relocated the family including her 2 sisters, who are 15 and 17 years older than she is, to Baden, a lovely spa town on the doorstep of Vienna. She grew up in this architecturally and historically glorious sett ing completing her education in Baden and then trained as a travel agent. She worked in project management over the next 21 years mainly in Vienna.

Lin travelled extensively through Europe, touring the British Isles and fell in love with this country. As luck would have it, she met a wonderful English man, Jack Seely, fell in love with him and made the “big” move to Sydenham where they were married.

Lin started as a Supervisor at a chemist in Chinnor and despite being hopelessly homesick, her many new friends and kind local people made everything easier and she soon realised that life is really good as long as you accept challenges with open arms and an open heart.

In 2002 Lin and Jack moved to Aylesbury, where they still live. With it

came the opportunity to contribute to, and to put back into the local community.

Her successful response to an advert in the Bucks Herald (which she keeps neatly cut out and stuck to a white sheet of paper in a folder called “My Life”) took her in an unexpected direction. She started as Manager of the Florence Nightingale Hospice Shop in Wendover and embraced this completely different experience feeling that she could potentially make a change to the lives of others.

Lin and her volunteers in the Wendover Hospice Shop worked tirelessly to raise the necessary funds for the Hospice in Stoke Mandeville. A few of the many missions and aims were to make it a focal point in the community, a pleasant place to come and receive a warm welcome, relax, enjoy browsing, pick up a bargain, offload one’s troubles, share a joke and come back knowing you would be treated as a valued customer and friend.

Lin always felt that the same warm welcome kept the volunteers loyal and

dedicated and doing whatever they could to make shopping a joyful

experience while at the same time feeling good about doing one’s bit for Charity.

Lin says, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the W e n d o ve r c o m m u n i t y , regulars, people who came to visit us from far beyond the borders of Wendover and especially the volunteers, for receiving me so warmly into their midst. I never for one

minute felt unwelcome. It was a joy and pleasure to work for and with you and serve the community for 10 years. I am leaving the Hospice Shop to pursue different things in life.

Thank you again so much for everything you gave and taught me, it has been an absolute pleasure. I am sure we will see each other again in the future.”

P.S. from Casper the Labradoodle: “I moved in with my family as a hopefully much loved addition in 2007, and would like to thank all the people who have known me, stroked and cuddled me, cooed at me, sometimes walked me and threw in the occasional treat. I will miss you all furry much.”

View From the Chair What a month so far! With the Jubilee and the Olympics taking place this summer the fittingly themed Wendover Celebrates took place at the beginning of June. What an event it was and one that I personally was proud to be part of. At the PC meeting it was minuted that the Steering Group and committee for Wendover Celebrates be formally congratulated on organising such a superb event. It was nice to see all the Steering group and some of the committee present to hear the comments from the PC. Many councillors gave their personal time or donated equipment and even car parking spaces to help the event run successfu l ly. The Community Information Office team did brisk business in ticket, raffle and brochure sales as well as answering queries.

From a Parish Council perspective, a warm welcome is extended to Sue Gilbert, who is assisting Jill Bottomley for the next month or so.

Meetings As the number of meetings has grown to around 65 it has been decided to reduce this to about 46. There will be 10 main Council Meetings, omitting August and December. Planning will continue to meet twice a month if necessary, the Amenities Committee bi-monthly, Finance Committee quarterly and the

Staffing Committee as needed, but approx twice a year.

Matters Arising Last year it was decided to trial a communications page in Wendover News with the intention of giving Parishioners more information about what the Parish Council was doing for the community and asking the community what it would like its Council to achieve. The first year is now coming to an end. We hope and believe you have found ‘Matters Arising’ interesting and useful. So, we have decided to continue using the back page of Wendover News for this purpose. We would like to thank Jane Larkham for her generosity and for doing so much to help establish ‘Matters Arising’

Drovers’ Trees There is concern that pine trees behind the Clock Tower may damage the roof if nothing is done so the AVDC Arboriculturalist has decided to lop the offending branches.

The trees are ‘Drovers’ Trees’ and have a history as way markers and still exist all over the country. Trees were planted by cattle drovers and herders to identify watering places for their animals and

mark the routes across country before there were roads. They were planted roughly a day’s travel apart, often Scots Pine because their height makes them distinctive and easy to recognise.

Wendover was the meeting place of at least two drover trails, the Ridgeway and a trail from Ashridge, believed to have entered Wendover down Hog Trough Lane. The watering place would have been a ford, crossing what is now the old Tring Road close to where Brook House now stands.

The three Scots Pines at the Clock Tower were planted after the building was finished in 1870. A picture of the period shows no such trees. There is still a large drinking trough next to the Clock Tower and contemporary pictures show a herd of sheep being driven to the site and horses actually being watered there. It is reasonable to assume the trees were planted at about this time to replace the old Drovers’ Trees and carry on the tradition.

Fishing Although we are all fed up with the rain there has been a positive result. The water level at Hampden Pond has risen so we can announce that it is open for fishing again. Licences to fish are available via the Clock Tower or Ray Smith’s garage. Any season ticket holder who would like to assist in bailiff operations please contact the Clock Tower.
