Principal’s Message Another busy month has come and gone at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School. Josyf Cardinal Slipyj students have been very busy with the Lego Club, Choir, Holodomor Panachida, Scientists in the School, Parent-teacher interviews, visit by MPP Ivan Baker, Dance Workshops, boys and girls Volleyball Tournaments, Scholastic book fair, Scientists in the School presentations for grades 6, 3, and 5, and outing to Crawford Lake for grades 3. What a busy month!

The Christmas season is upon us and with it, we begin to prepare for the festivities of Christmas. We need to remember the true meaning of Christmas. This is the time to slow down and to reflect on the wonderful ways in which God has touched our lives and we marvel at the miracle of Jesus; birth in Bethlehem. Let us encourage our children to prepare for Christmas and celebrate the blessing of the season in a thoughtful and prayerful way, that we might focus on and recognize the fulfillment of God’s promise to His people. The grades 1 to grade 8 students are beginning to prepare for this year’s Christmas concert. The concert will be taking place on the December 12 at 1:30pm and on Friday, December 15 at 9:30am and 1:30pm in our school gym. We are all looking forward to seeing all of our families there, listening to the lovely singing and performances of our talented students. Josyf Cardinal Slipyj staff and students will be attending Liturgy on the Feast Day of St. Nicholas on Monday, December 18 at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Church. We will be travelling to church by school buses. We invite our parents to join us in celebrating Liturgy with our students. Children are asked to wear their embroidered shirts/blouses on that day. We are all looking forward to celebrating this special day. On Tuesday, December 19th, we will have a very special guest visiting all the students at JCS. St. Nicholas will be visiting with his angels in the morning at around 9:00 am in the gym, beginning with our little JK’s and SK’s. This will be a very special day for all of our students! The school would like to thank our Ukrainian Department and our CSPC parents for their dedication and preparation into this magical day. Staff and students are asked to wear their embroidered shirts and blouses on this day as well.

The Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Staff would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Josyf Cardinal Slipyj families a very blessed Nativity season, filled with love, joy and peace. A.Iwasykiw and Ida Mandarino

Inclement Weather Students are reminded to dress appropriately for the cold weather as ALL students will be outdoors during these cool temperatures, especially before the morning school bell. Once the extreme weather conditions are upon us (approximately -17/-20C), recess and outdoor play will be shortened and/or held inside.

DRESS CODE at JCS We continue to remind all parents and students that the dress code at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj is in effect. Students are to wear navy and white, as stated in their agenda and as per Board Policy. Many of our students continue to wear multi coloured hoodies. We strongly encourage the intermediate students to be the leaders of the school and lead by example. We also ask for parent cooperation in the enforcement of the dress code. As for the kindergarten students, we ask that all students and parents comply with the uniform policy. Navy and white apparel may be purchased online and in stores (Eg. Old Navy, Osh Kosh, Gap Kids)

THANK YOU PARENTS !!! We are very happy to state that early dismissal of students from class at the end of the day has significantly improved. It is great to see that parents are respecting the wishes of the teachers in allowing them to instruct their classes with very little interruptions. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. LUNCHTIME SUPERVISOR Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School is looking for another Lunchtime supervisor to supervise students in the school yard and in the classroom during lunchtime. This involves supervising the students from 11:15am to 12:15pm daily, indoors and outdoors. If you are interested and/or know of anyone that would be interested in this position, and loves children, please let us know as soon as possible. __________________________________________________________________________________

Holiday Math: Take advantage of math in the world

Holidays are a great time to learn how math relates to the real world. Math is everywhere! Help your child prevent “learning loss” by taking advantage of the many great opportunities to practice math naturally! Below are a few ideas to get you started:

Cooking and baking can involve weighing, measuring, ordering, estimating, adding, multiplying … Restaurants and shopping can involve money, number identification, estimating, adding, subtracting, division … Parties can involve matching numbers of people to plates, cutlery, area of tables, estimation,

multiplication … Trips can involve time, distance, budgeting, speed, evaluating various routes, license plate games (e.g. adding or

multiplying the numbers on the plate) … Home projects can involve estimation, measuring, multiplication …

These ideas all demonstrate how much math is involved in our daily lives and will support your child in his or her basic computation and problem-solving skills in natural, fun and real ways.

Stay tuned for more math tips in the January Newsletter

VIRTUE FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER

CHARITY

As we enter the season of Lent/Advent to prepare our hearts for the birth of Jesus, it is rather suitable that this month’s virtue is CHARITY. Many of us are already engaging in the mad rush to purchase gifts, but let us be mindful of the fact that charity is not always about giving material things. Our quote for the month is “Where charity and love are, God is there”. As St. Thomas Aquinas described it “Charity is friendship first with God and secondly with all who belong to God." How can we practice charity and generosity in our community? This month at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School we will be demonstrating charity by joining other schools in the LegoDrive4Ukraine. We are asking that children bring in used LEGO, loose and/or in sets to school. Legos will then be sent to Help Us Help the Children Ukrainian Winter Camp. Your Lego donations will be used in LEGO clubs, which will become a great addition to the camp programs. They will provide new opportunities to kids - engage their math, architectural and engineering skills. After the camps - all equipment and materials go to the orphanages that are being chosen each year. This

initiative has already gained a great support in the community! We are looking forward to all of our staff, students, and parents for their support in helping this fun fundraiser.

Reminder to all JCS parents that the monthly calendar and newsletter are on the Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School

Hello, Dear JCS Parents! Your school has joined LegoDrive4Ukraine and is now collecting used LEGO, loose and/or in sets, to be sent to Ukraine. The idea for this initiative came to two brothers, students at St. Josaphat’s school. It gained support by HUHTC (Help Us Help The Children) of Dopomoha Ukraini - Aid Ukraine charitable foundation. As you may already know, HUHTC is collecting used items and toys for disadvantaged children in Ukraine. HUHTC organizes summer and winter camps in Carpathian Mountains for children of war and orphans! At the camps, brand new computer classes, sewing workshops and other great engagements are set up for children! Your Lego donations will be used in LEGO clubs, which will become a great addition to the camp programs. They will provide new opportunities to kids - engage their math, architectural and engineering skills. After the camps - all equipment and materials go to the orphanages that are being chosen each year. This initiative has already gained a great support in the community! Yuri Lypa Saturday School has become the first donation centre. Other drop off place are: -Ridna Shkola Saturday school in Oakville. -Smart Start Academy (Before/After school program and daycare). Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School has joined this great initiative and set up a drop off box at their front entrance. So, please join the movement - LegoDrive4Ukraine & send used LEGO, loose and/or in sets, to your school with your child! With this we are hoping to teach our kids charity and how small things can change the world! Monthly Update from the Board

December 2017 Parents Urged to Check Their Liability Insurance Coverage

At the October 19, 2017 Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Board resolved that all parents of the Board should

be advised to consider contacting their home insurance providers to determine the adequacy of their home insurance

coverage to cover claims arising out of injuries caused by their child at school.

The reason for the Board of Trustee direction is that there have been a few instances recently where legal action has been

initiated for personal injury or other harm to a student allegedly caused by another child.

A brief consultation by parents with their insurance provider is advised so parents can assess the adequacy of their insurance

coverage if they are sued for personal injury or other harm allegedly caused by their child at school.

WINTER 2017

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS! After an abbreviated summer, it looks like winter has finally arrived. However, as

we near Christmas, I would be remiss if I didn’t extend a warm welcome to the

students and staff who have joined the community or who have taken on new roles

this year. I wish them continued success in their new school communities.

I am continually amazed by the wealth of programs and initiatives ongoing in our

local schools. These programs,

and the school communities that

support them, are a testament

to the students, parents and

educators who have invested

so much of their time and

effort. While some schools in

the system have been

struggling with declining

enrollment we have seen

growing demand for Catholic

education in south and central

Etobicoke. It truly is a success

story.

The beginning of December also marks one of the most important times of the

year; the beginning of Advent. Advent allows us time to reflect on the year that has

passed and prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord. As we run from place to

place during this busy time, please take a moment to reflect on those less fortunate

than us and the efforts we can make to lift their spirits.

For many, the Christmas season also brings with it the stress of trying to find that

perfect gift the loved ones in your life. This year, please consider giving a

donation in the name of that special someone to the Angel Foundation for

Learning. The Angel Foundation is a charitable organization that supports

TCDSB students through nutritional, educational and recreational programs. For

more information, or to donate, please visit

http://www.angelfoundationforlearning.org.

In closing, I would like to wish a very Merry Christmas to the students, staff and

families of our Ward 2 community. I hope your season is blessed with joy as we

take the time to reconnect with friends, family and loved onesMerry Christmas and

Happy New Year,

Ann Andrachuk Trustee – Ward 2 (City Wards 3, 5 & 6)
