STUDENT ABSENCE and LATENESS SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM School Phone Number – 416 393 5413

Parents/Guardians must call and leave a message on the school answering machine. Please include your child’s name, teacher’s name, grade and the reason for absence.

Parents who fail to inform the school of their children’s absence will be contacted as soon as possible, either at home or at work. Extended absences must be accompanied by a note to school indicating the reason.

When a student arrives late for school, he or she must report to the office before going to class. Instructional time begins at 8:30 am, and students will be given late slips if they arrive after this time. Punctuality is an important habit to be developed and practised by every child. The home will be contacted by the school if a child is persistently late.

Students who must leave before dismissal, must be signed out by parent/guardian at the office. Please inform the classroom teacher or school office indicating the time of pickup so that the student is ready and waiting for your arrival, causing very little if any disruption to the classroom and instruction.

On days when the weather is inclement, students are asked to arrive at school just before the bell. Those students present at school will be permitted to enter the building at 8:15am in the morning. On such days, the recess periods will be held indoors. Unless the weather conditions are particularly bad, cold weather alone does not warrant an early entry to the building or indoor recess. Appropriate dress is a requirement on such days.

Students should not return to school following an illness until they are fully recovered. Students should return once they are able to participate in all school activities, including outdoor recess.

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS Parents/guardians are not to congregate in the halls and doorways while waiting for their

children. Please wait outside when the weather is nice. Parents/guardians should meet their children outside the doors, east side of the school, in

the pickup yard. Parents are asked to not enter the school yard and/or bus lines to take their child. All students are to be picked up in the pickup yard.

All visitors to the school must report to the office and are required to sign in and sign out at the office.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS and TELEPHONE NUMBERS Please relay any of the following changes immediately to the school:

address or telephone numbers – cell #’s

business telephone numbers

“emergency” contact person’s information

Medical information Accidents can and do occur. It is imperative and essential that we are able to contact you. Please provide us with all up-to-date information.

A MEMO TO ALL PARENTS As parents and guardians, you are important members of our school family. Consistency between home and school is a significant part of successful development of positive behaviours, attitudes and compliance. Your support of the school and its’ policies is imperative. In the home, parents should reinforce the expectations of school, understand the expectations, policies, and practices discussed in the Agenda and Newsletter. Please refer to the Code of Conduct in the agenda and discuss these with you child. We need to ensure that parents and the school are in harmony when responding to various issues. Good communication is critical to this process. Parents and the school must work closely together if short and long term success is to be achieved. We hope this outline provides a base of shared support upon which teachers and parents may build effective mutual understandings and constructive relationships.

SAFETY The safety of our children must always be of the utmost concern. Every effort is made to make our school safe, comfortable, secure and free from violence, racism and harassment. BUS, BICYCLE, CLASSROOM, FIRE, PRESONAL, PLAY, ROAD/RAIL and TRIP SAFETY are part of the curriculum in the school. Officials from the community visit the school, and present and reinforce this important information to our students. We value and strongly encourage your support in this area, and ask that you regularly review all aspects of safety with your child.

BUSSING!!! Eighty percent of our students are bussed to school

and back home. It is crucial that all of our students arrive to school and home safely. Students are greeted by a supervising teacher in the morning. All students meet in the school yard at the end of the day, stand in their bus lines in a particular order, and then they are escorted to their bus by a teacher. Students are strongly reminded to ensure that they are out at the bell and proceed directly to their bus lines. Chatting in the hallways or outside, and playing in the bus lines increases the chances that your son or daughter will miss the bus due to inattentiveness. Busses will not return to school if your child has missed the bus.

It is imperative that if you pick up your child/children, please inform the office and/or the staff member on bus duty. We need to ensure that ALL children are accounted for and on the bus. Safety is paramount.

In addition, if you are parked on the north side of West Deane, please walk across the street and pick up your child from the school pickup yard. Students will not be allowed to walk or run across the street unescorted. Please take a few extra minutes to greet your child in the school yard, inform the teacher that you are taking your child, and proceed safely to your car. We ask you for your assistance and cooperation in this matter.

The bus company the drives our students daily is Switzer Carty Transportation, and can be reached at – 905 361 1084. Please ensure that you know the bus route number of your child’s bus so that prompt attention may be given.

Families are encouraged to sign up on the transportation portal as it will help you to communicate and keep you updated on service related issues. The transportation portal may be located at https://www.torontoschoolbus.org/transportation-portal

Excursions Excursions which complement and enrich the classroom portion of your children’s education program are encouraged at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj. They are carefully planned excursions that provide an opportunity to expand student programs beyond the classroom. Teachers must follow specific procedures and guidelines when planning field trips and excursions. Your child is expected to participate in all of these ventures. Student Safety and Expectations on the bus Observe the instructions of the bus driver at all times.

Remain seated and facing the front at all times until the bus comes to a complete stop.

Respect others’ property and do not cause damage to the bus in any way.

Do not talk loudly, yell, throw objects or fight on the bus as this distracts the bus driver and may cause injury to yourself and other students.

Keep your hands and head inside the bus, do not lean out the window, spit or throw objects out the window.

Eating and drinking is not allowed on the bus.

Show respect to the bus driver and fellow passengers at all time

ELECTRONIC DEVICES and CELL PHONES We continue to encourage students to leave IPods, MP3 players, digital games or toys, cameras, cell phones, other electronic devices and other personal belongings of value at home. If your child brings a cell phone to and from school, it MUST be turned off while on school property and remain out of sight everywhere on school property including classrooms, the washroom, the parking lot and schoolyard. Matters of urgency are to be dealt with through the office. If your child needs to contact you, they are to seek permission to use the school phone. In addition, the school will not be responsible for lost or stolen phones. Please read the school agenda for more details and consequences on the misuse of PED’s.

SURF-RIGHT (On-line rules and etiquette) In addition to other areas of programming, students are required to become familiar with electronic communication systems (computers/laptops). Teachers and staff will instruct students about the specific rules for the use of the Internet. Students are expected to support the rules that are clearly established by staff and the rules to TCDSB’s “Acceptable Use Policy”. The signed Internet Agreement Form must be returned to the school.

SCHOOL UNIFORM- Appropriate Dress Code

The TCDSB implemented an Appropriate Dress Code in all of its elementary schools in September 2011. This year, September 2017, all students will be required to conform to the TCDSB Uniform Policy. Students from JK to Grade 8 are expected to comply with the policy. The Appropriate Dress Code consists of any combination of solid white and solid navy blue garments (e.g., plain white top, navy blue bottoms or, navy blue top and bottom; no denim and no jeggings, no stripes, no logos, and absolutely no black/grey track pants). Please remember that shirts with inappropriate comments or graphics and/or any type of tank or halter tops are NOT allowed. Make-up is not allowed for any student, and for safety reasons, hoop earrings are not to be worn. SHOULD YOUR CHILD REQUIRE RECURRING REMINDERS HE/SHE WILL BE ASKED TO CALL HOME AND HAVE APPROPRIATE WEAR BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL. Uniforms may be purchased at Old Navy, Gap Kids, SEARS, Carters and Walmart, not to mention a few. The JCS CSPC also has a used uniform sale throughout the school year where parents are able to purchase additional uniform apparel.

School Insurance Forms

Enclosed in this newsletter is a letter from the TCDSB Student Accident Insurance Form. Please read the attached letter carefully as it offers a variety of plans and benefits for your child.

Lost and Found In order to prevent students from misplacing their belongings, it would be helpful to have all boots, gym clothes, coats, etc., labelled. A lost and found box is maintained in the school. Students are asked to look there for missing items.

Child Welfare/Health Information… Child Welfare By Ontario law we are obliged to report any disclosure or suspicion of alleged abuse. We have no discretion in this matter.

Medication Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless they have written authorization signed by you, the parent, and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated yearly and on a regular basis; these are available from the school office (SS 11,12,13). Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense non-prescription medications to students.

Should you require additional information or have any questions about this protocol, please contact the school Principal or the Special Services Department at the CEC. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Page 9: Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Catholic School...Їхній внесок та посвята школі є надзвичайними. Сподіваємось на ще один чудовий

Immunization All students are required by law to be immunized. Failure to provide proof of immunization could result in suspension of a student by the Medical Officer of Health. Please ensure that your child’s immunization is up to date.

Anaphylaxis As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that Josyf Cardinal Slipyj is an allergen aware school. There are children in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergens to certain foods, such as egg, shell fish, peanut and nut products (among other food and/or non-food products). Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction, and exposure to the smallest quantities of these products can be life threatening. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex. An anaphylaxis reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School would appreciate the co-operation of the entire school community in NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts or nuts, which could potentially harm a child. Other restrictions may apply on a class by class basis. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of the food restrictions. We ask that you do not send food for birthdays or special occasions, including timbits, muffins, doughnuts, cookies, pizza, etc. Any edible treats will be sent back home with the student. There are many alternatives such as stickers, pencils, bubbles, crayons, pencil crayons, play dough, colouring books, legos, note pads, etc., that can be purchased at the dollar store. If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school staff. We look forward to your co-operation in making this a safe year for all our students.

Pediculosis (Head Lice) If you should discover that your child has been infected with head lice, we would ask that you advise the Principal and/or school office of the problem in order that various classes can be checked to prevent further spreading. Outbreaks of pediculosis are common among school children and are not considered a health problem, but more of a nuisance. Any person, however clean, may become infested by exposure to other infested persons or their belongings, particularly hats, coats, combs, brushes, etc. Schools usually notice an increase of instances after holidays where students have gone to camps, etc. Parents are advised to check for lice on a regular basis. The eggs (nits) are attached near the base of the individual hairs, usually along the hairline at the back and sides of the head. When infestations occur, effective treatments can be obtained without a doctor’s prescription from most pharmacies.

Lunch at School It is the policy of the school to allow students to stay for lunch for the following reasons:

When no one is at home to provide lunch.

When distance is considered too great to cover during the lunch hour.

When rehearsals or extracurricular school activities shorten the lunch hour. If behavior becomes a consistent problem with any child, we will ask the parents to make other arrangements for lunch time.

Page 10: Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Catholic School...Їхній внесок та посвята школі є надзвичайними. Сподіваємось на ще один чудовий

Parents are advised that when a child eats lunch at school, they MUST NOT LEAVE the school premises EVER. It is reasonable for a parent to feel that their child is safe on school premises when their child has entered school. Teachers do not have the authority to allow children to leave the school. Only the Principal has this authority, with parental permission. Kindly inform your child of this rule.

Waste Free Lunches The Toronto Catholic District School Board remains committed to the environment and continues to look for innovative ways to promote conservation through energy and waste reduction initiatives. We are asking parents to fully participate with your child in a “Waste Free Lunch Program” at our school. Be part of helping us become leaders in this environmentally friendly waste reduction program. It involves the following three steps: 1. Lunches and snacks should be packed in a re-usable container, not in disposable bags. 2. In order to avoid spills, we ask you to use containers that are resealable. 3. Leftover food which can be disposed of in the green bin program available at your home will be brought back home in their containers by your child. The “Waste Free Lunch Program” promotes and teaches our students the importance of being stewards of the earth. Our hope is that this practice at school and at home will teach all children to carry this awareness and behaviour with them as they grow into young adults. Thank you for your ongoing support with our school’s environmental efforts.

SPECIAL EVENTS During the school year, your child will have an opportunity to participate in House Leagues, extra-curricular sport activities and special events. These activities sometimes require after school practice and preparation. We strongly encourage involvement in such activities, and would request parental permission for your child’s participation. If for any reason you choose not to have your child become involved in these activities, parents are requested to send a note to this effect.

Emergency Closing of School The school may be closed or classes may be cancelled for a temporary period in the case of an emergency arising out of inclement weather, fire, breakdown of heating plant, the failure of an essential utility or similar emergency when the health, welfare or safety of children are in jeopardy. In such case the school staff will endeavour to contact the parent or guardian to ensure that the child is picked up, and where this will occur. In cases where adequate supervision can be ensured, the children will remain in the care of the Principal and staff until the parents can assume responsibility for their children. We also encourage parents to monitor the TCDSB Website, radio stations, TV stations, etc., where information is disseminated concerning school closures and/or emergencies.

HOMEWORK

Homework in moderation can be beneficial to the children in many ways. It can help children to:

develop a sense of responsibility

teach organization

provide practice of skills

complete work begun in school

pursue personal interests through projects related to subjects studied in class

as per grade guidelines, certain minutes are allocated to the different grades

Page 11: Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Catholic School...Їхній внесок та посвята школі є надзвичайними. Сподіваємось на ще один чудовий

Homework can also provide communication between parent and child enabling you to know what your child is being taught in school. You can aid you child through your interest and by ensuring a quiet time and place for homework to be done.

TYPES OF HOMEWORK 1. Work assigned by the teacher to be done for the next day. 2. Longer term assignments, e.g., memory work, projects, study for summative tests. 3. Review of class work. 4. Unfinished and incomplete class assignments 5. Library books for pleasure reading.

Parents are encouraged to check their children’s homework and agenda daily.

VIRTUE FOR THE MONTH – Hospitality As we welcome our students back to school in September it seems fitting that this month’s virtue is HOSPITALITY. Our teachers have been busy preparing their classrooms, gathering together resources, supplies and putting up bulletin boards that will invite the students back into a welcoming environment. But hospitality is more than just a welcoming back. Our quote for the month is from Matthew 25:40,

“Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me”.

According to Henri Nouwen, “The German word for hospitality is Gastfreundschaft which means friendship for the guest… It means the creation of a free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy”. In our school community and in our homes, we can discuss the concept of the least of our people or the stranger who needs our hospitality, be it the newly arrived to Canada or the new student at our school. Today hospitality is more important than ever and it is only through a deep moral obligation to hospitality that we transform our communities. We need to remember that God welcomes us all to his table and we should do the same. If you want to feel welcomed, make sure you are welcoming others.

CURRICULUM NIGHT - BBQ We welcome parents to our Curriculum Night BBQ on Thursday, September 21 at 5:30 pm for a meet and greet BBQ in the school yard. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, to visit the classroom learning environment and to receive an overview of the curriculum for the year. We will begin the evening with a BBQ in the schoolyard. Volunteers and staff will be barbecuing hotdogs and hamburgers. At 6:30pm we ask that parents assemble in the school gym/outdoors (weather permitting) for a Welcome from the Principal, Staff Introductions, and a few words from our CSPC. Please remember that this is not an Interview Night, but an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher. We hope you will be able to attend. Please fill out the BBQ form accompanying this Newsletter and submit the form to your class teacher and/or school office by Friday, September 15th, 2017. If you are able to assist with the BBQ, set up or clean up, please let the school office know as soon as possible or email [email protected]. All volunteers are welcomed and very much appreciated. This is a great opportunity to meet new parents. DONATIONS for JCS classrooms and library Slowly but surely we continue to make some minor physical improvements to JCS School. The last school year we have had the gym, 3 classrooms, and parts of the school hallway repainted. Four new opening windows have been installed in the school gym, and the stage has brand new midnight blue stage curtains. We will be continuing with improvements over the next few years. There have been some requests for particular items. In particular, the school librarian is looking to beautify parts of the library by adding a sitting area for students to enjoy reading their books. Mrs. Daciuk is looking to purchase some Ikea couches, end tables and comfy chairs for the students. If you are able to assist in this matter, please contact Mrs. Daciuk at the school. In addition, the junior and senior kindergarten classes welcome donations of toys, books, blocks, paper, dress up clothes, etc. for their classrooms. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Catholic Education In Our Schools

Every three years the Toronto Catholic District School Board launches a pastoral plan that helps to nurture our Catholic community. The theme for the 2015-2018 academic year is “Together with one voice: Harmonizing our Faith through Family, Parish and School”. This partnership of family, parish, and school is the strongest foundation of our Catholic system and builds “an inclusive learning community rooted in the love of Christ”. (TCDSB Mission Statement). Thus, it is important that parents as the first teachers build a faith filled home; the church will strengthen and celebrate it; while our Catholic schools will nurture and sustain it. This year we are celebrating the Year of the School. We look for ways to more fully engage our staff, students and parents in the lives of our school, be it through prayer, masses, Feast Days, sacraments, assemblies, sport events, dances, clubs, student council, technology, speakers, art, music, and play.

Improving Access to School Bus Information for Toronto Parents Toronto Student Transportation Group and Boards Launch Transportation Portal Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board parents are now able to access

bus cancellations or delays, thanks to the launch of a new online transportation portal.

Parents with children who are transported by school buses can register for the new Transportation

Portal by visiting www.torontoschoolbus.org.

Created by the Toronto Student Transportation Group, which oversees bussing for the TDSB and

communication to parents. Efforts are underway to integrate the GPS with the Transportation

Portal so that in the future, parents will be able to track their children’s buses in real time.

Increasing call centre staff during peak times, such as the start of school, to improve

responsiveness and communication to schools and parents.

Assigning all Principals from special needs congregated schools to a bus operating division to provide advice and insight on school issues with transportation and assist with driver training.

Providing bus operators with routes earlier in the planning process to give them enough time

to match all routes with drivers.

Improving collaboration and communication with the bus operators on route planning,

which will continue throughout the summer to provide additional time to address any driver

from the TDSB and TCDSB, to assist in identifying bus service issues and develop solutions.

TCDSB Student Artists Featured at Nuit Blanche

September 30-October 1, 2017 We Are / C'est Nous: TCDSB’s celebration of Canada150 through art, culture, history and the

environment using mixed media on tessellating tiles. The artworks created will display the talents of

Artists from a diverse range of backgrounds. Each panel will demonstrate a unique view of what it means

to be Canadian. The tiles are designed to connect to all other tiles, forming a veritable collaboration of

themes. The themes reflect Arts and Culture, History and the Environment. This artist collective will

embrace the beauty of Canada by providing images from over 200 communities in Toronto

celebrating Canada150. On display at Monsignor Fraser College, Isabella Campus, 146 Isabella Street

(rear of the building).

Passage Into Light: Monsignor Fraser College focuses on Canada as a home to many migrants who

escaped economic strife, war, and persecution. Their interactive installation is a symbolic narrative on

migration. It celebrates the history of Canadian compassion and acceptance. It also highlights how a

tradition of acceptance can change lives and consequently transform a nation in profound ways.

Spectators will follow the journey of afflicted migrants. The migrants' future resides beyond this entrance.

Those who enter will first be greeted by three illuminated dwellings entirely adorned with mirror mosaic.

Initial contact is both jarring and captivating. A peek through the peep holes of each of these dwellings

reveals a story of transformation.

The voyage culminates with a fourth dwelling. This red-and-white mosaic dwelling radiates a

kaleidoscope of colours. The installation is indoors at 146 Isabella Street.
