(1 Corinthians 13:13) Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Love certainly has survived quite well throughout the centuries and we look for every opportunity to celebrate love when we can. February 14th is just around the corner and already preparations are underway to make this day special for everyone at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School. Did you know that approximately 800 million Valentines are sent out each year? Cupid is certainly one very busy fellow. When you sit down with your children this year to prepare for St. Valentine’s Day, encourage then to send delightful messages, poems, or cards to family members, relatives and friends. Once they’ve accomplished this, encourage them to send words of appreciation throughout the whole year—when anyone least expects it! What a wonderful way to continue teaching our children to show friendship, appreciation and love. This year staff and students at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School will be celebrating the 125th birthday of Josyf Cardinal Slipyj on February 15th, even though his birthday is on February 17th (PA Day).

Josyf Cardinal Slipyj had a great love of learning as a young student and an even greater love for God and his religion. His faith, love for God, and hope cost Josyf Slipyj 18 years of harsh imprisonment. And yet it was this same faith, his love for God, and hope that set him free to tend to his flock. His motto PER ASPERA AD ASTRA - through hard work we can

reach the stars in heaven, resonates within the JCS staff and students. We know that through hard work we can accomplish many things. We know that the Catholic Education is at its best when Families, Parishes and Schools play, pray and work together to spread the Good News to all. Let us continue to live and remember this motto. Коли цього року ви сядете зі своїми дітьми готуватися до Дня святого Валентина, заохочуйте їх посилати чудові повідомлення, вірші, картки членам сім'ї, родичам і друзям. Після того, як свято мине, заохочуйте їх посилати слова вдячності протягом цілого року, тоді, коли хтось сподівається їх найменше. Чудовий спосіб вчити дітей демонструвати дружбу, вдячність і любов!

Цього року наша школа святкуватиме 125-ту річницю з дня народження Йосипа Кардинала Сліпого. Через те, що День його народження - 17 лютого співпадає з днем професійної активності для вчителів і діти в цей день не приходять до школи, ми перенесли святкування на 15 лютого. Ще будучи студентом, Йосип Кардинал Сліпий дуже любив вчитися, але ще більше любив Бога і свою релігію. Його віра, любов до Бога і надія коштували йому 18 років тяжкого тюремного увязнення. І ті ж самі віра, любов до Бога і надія зробили можливим його повернення. Його девіз в житті

Parent/Teacher Interviews – Provincial Report Cards The Provincial report card will be directed home on Tuesday, February 14th. Please check your child’s backpack for it. Parent/teacher interviews will be held on

Thursday, February 16th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, Friday, February 17th from 9:00am to 11:00am.

The interview form will follow the same format as in the Fall. Students will be receiving a hard copy of available dates and times for parents to select. Parents are encouraged to complete the forms and return to the school as soon as possible. These paper forms will be sent home on Monday, February 6th with the students. Ongoing communication will provide information that will encouraged our students to set goals for learning, help teachers to establish plans, and assist parents in supporting learning at home. We look

forward to meeting with you at the parent/teacher interviews and to continue to work in partnership. LATENESS We are still experiencing many students who are arriving to school anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes late on a daily basis. When you add this up, a student who is 5 minutes late everyday will miss 100 minutes of instructional time per month, approximately 3 to 4 class periods. If a student is late 20 minutes, once or twice a week, that equates to 80 minutes to 200 minutes per month, approximately 6 classes of instructional time. Showing up on time to school each day benefits students’ academic performance and future professional habits. Students who arrive early have an advantage over classmates who stumble through the door after class has begun.

They Enjoy More Time To Prepare. Students arriving to school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials, and focusing their minds on the lessons to come. They have time to wake up especially after a sleepy ride to school on the bus or in a car. Students showing up to class in the middle of a lesson miss out on this natural transition period and may lose even more of the lesson as they scurry to settle into an academic focus, which may ultimately contribute to lower grades.

Never Miss Important Information Being late can cause students to miss more than just the introduction to a new lesson. Teachers often share important information: reminders of upcoming quizzes, class trips, new classroom rules, due dates and other school-related specifics. Students who show up late may miss out on these details and as a result, be unprepared for some future class event.

Develop Positive Lifelong Habits Showing up on time to school every day can help students develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments, a positive habit that can serve students in later years and high school. If showing up late to school becomes a habit, students may develop the notion that being late is acceptable behavior, which may have negative consequences in the future.

Reminder This is a reminder to all parents/guardians that Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School is an allergen aware school. There are children at the school who suffer from severe and life threatening allergens to certain foods, in particular peanut and nut products, eggs, shell fish. We require the cooperation of the entire school in NOT sending any snacks, Tim bits, doughnuts, and other edible treats on birthdays and special occasions. Edible treats will be sent home with your child. In addition, we ask that parents discuss with their children the dangers of sharing food amongst friends. Students need to know that when a parent packs a lunch the parent expects their child to eat the contents in their lunch bag and bring back what was not consumed.

Events/Activities of January 2017

Malanka Students at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj rang in Malanka on Friday, January 13th. Students began

the Malanka to one of the most danced Ukrainian Songs, the Kolomayka. Our primary, junior and intermediate students participated in dancing the New Year.

Feast of Jordan

The Feast of Jordan is both a celebration and commemoration of Jesus’ baptism in the river Jordan and the revelation of the Holy Trinity. A vessel containing water is placed in front of the altar and a special three part ceremony begins. During the first part of the ceremony, a TRYSVICHNYK is lit (three candles together), the sign of the cross is made three times with the TRYSVICHNYK and after each time it is immersed in the water. During the second part of the ceremony, the Father Kachur breathes on the water three times in the form of the cross. During the third part of the ceremony the Father Kachur immerses his right hand into the water three times in the form of the cross. At the conclusion of the ceremony Father Kachur dips a hand held cross into the water, three times and then blesses the faithful with the Holy Water. The students take the Holy Water home and partake in its grace and healing divinity.

Skiing at Hockley Valley On Friday, January 27 students from grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 travelled by school bus to Hockley Valley for a

beautiful, sun filled day of great skiing.

Dear Parents! THE 2017 FOREST OF READING® STARTS NOW!

We are excited to inform you that our school is registered in Blue Spruce (grades JKs-gr. 2) -highly popular provincial recreational reading program for students, a project of the Ontario Library Association. The program is designed to promote reading for enjoyment, to increase awareness of quality in Canadian literature and to provide opportunities to engage in discussions about books whether at school or at home.

This is how the program works. Readers read nominated Canadian titles and then vote for their favourite

one. Voting will take place in April. Based on voting across the province, the winning titles are announced

and, in May, authors are honoured with an award at the Festival of Trees™ at Harbourfront Center in

Toronto. The Forest of Reading® main premise is to foster the love of reading and create lifelong readers!

Understand Numbers with Your Child

Research tells us that in mathematics, higher achieving students have a stronger flexibility and

understanding of the relationships between numbers. In classrooms, educators are working with

students to build skills with understanding and connections, to help develop their sense of number

as well as learning and remembering facts. This helps them when problem-solving.

Think about knowing 4 + 7 = 11 simply as a memorized fact.

Now think about knowing that 4 + 7 = 11 because it is a 3 + 7 and 1 more (linked to knowing that

10 is an important number).

The understanding of this relationship can help a student to think flexibly about 64+27.

In the same way, it can be thought about as 60 + 20 + the 10 (that was made by the understanding

of 4+7) and 1 more = 91

As a parent, you can support your child in thinking flexibly about how numbers are related:

What other numbers or facts is this connected to?

Example: 6 + 7=? This is like the double I know of 6 + 6 and then 1 more.

What do you know that might help you get there?

Example: 7 x 4 =? I remember that 5 x 4 = 20, so then I have to add on two more 4’s,

which is 8, to get 28.

What is another way that you can know that?

Example: 4 x 25 =? I can think about money and know that 4 quarters is $1.00, so 4 x 25 = 100

Ontario K – 12 students and parents. This website includes games, learning tools, activities, and

additional supports for students to explore, build and enhance their mathematical thinking. A

parent ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section includes: “How can I help with the learning of

mathematics?”, “What mathematics activities can we do together?”, “What digital supports are

February Virtue - LOVE

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.’ (John 15:12) Chocolates, flowers, valentines and red hearts, what would the month of February be without the celebration of Valentine’s Day. While the rest of the world may choose to celebrate the ideal of romantic love on February 14, TCDSB schools will be focusing on the virtue of LOVE as expressed in the gospels. “For God so loved the world, He gave His only son.” John 3:16. As we focus on the virtue of love at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School this month let us remember that love not only inspires the practice of all other virtues, it is the form and completion of all the other virtues. We will not limit our celebration of the virtue of love to February 14th but demonstrate this virtue through our many events and activities at JCS.

How do we show Love at Josyf Cardinal Slipyj School: Let our actions be guided by the idea that God says we should love one another as He has

loved us. Jesus said we should love our enemy. It’s easy to show love to those with whom we are

close. The challenge is to show love to those with whom we do NOT get along. We should try to respect and love everyone, even those who do NOT respect and love us back.

The Bible says that Love is always patient and kind. When we start to lose our patience with someone, we need to remember what love is. One of the easiest way to show love to others is to be kind to them.

Live your life in a way that makes others know you are a follower of Christ. The Golden Rule asks us to love our neighbor as we would want them to love us. Living a life of virtue means to show love to all whom we meet.

Dear Parents,

Our school has registered to participate in The Angel Brigade- Civvies Day in

support of The Angel Foundation for Learning. Our Civvies day will be a themed

PYJAMA DAY and it will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

The Angel Foundation for Learning works hard to provide TCDSB students with the basic necessities of life and help in acquiring the essential tools they need to learn successfully.

Today, close to 40 per cent of our students live below the poverty line. Through

essential nutritional, educational, social and emergency support programs, The Angel Foundation for Learning works to give every student an equal opportunity

to thrive. Last year, The Angel Foundation for Learning distributed over $3 700 000 to

support students in need, and served 5 204 330 nutritious breakfasts, lunches or snacks to nourish hungry students.

Our school has decided to join the Brigade and we kindly ask that you support The Angel Foundation for Learning by sending your child to school on Tuesday,

February 28, 2017 in their pyjamas and with a donation of $2.00.

With your donations, we are helping young students see that when they are at their most vulnerable, an entire community is here to support them.

Monthly Update from the Board

February 2017

Toronto Catholic District School Board has declared Friday, May 5, 2017 as Parish Family Day.

A special Parish Family Day Celebration will be held at the Catholic Education Centre on Friday, May 5th, 2017 to

showcase student work focusing on the many ways that our parishes and our parish priests contribute to our schools

and communities.

Students are invited to create a short video, original song or piece of original artwork, write a short story, poem or

letter, or express themselves in any way artistically to highlight the relationship that the students have with the local

parish and/or the priest/pastor at their church.

Completed projects should be submitted via email to parish.project@tcdsb.org.

Deadline for submissions Friday, April 7, 2017.

February Message from Trustee Ann Andrachuk. There are many great activities in our schools and around the City this

month, especially with Family Day on Monday the 20th. It’s a great

opportunity for all of us to take a short break and spend some time

with our loved ones.

Just a reminder that junior kindergarten registration began on January

18. If you have a child, or know someone else who does, that’s

entering kindergarten in September please visit tcdsb.org to register.

As the City of Toronto comes closer to setting its 2017 budget, some

changes that could affect many childcare operators at TCDSB schools

have been proposed. The proposed changes would remove City rent

subsidies for many of these childcare providers and may lead directly to increased fees for users.

These changes, and the City of Toronto budget as a whole, will be held on February 15th. If you

feel these changes may affect you more information can be found on the City’s budget website at:

Dear Parents/Guardians, In early December 2016 Toronto Children’s Services advised the Toronto Catholic District

School Board (TCDSB) that due to significant funding pressures, in its 2017 operating budget,

Toronto Children’s Services was recommending, to the City of Toronto Budget Committee, to

cancel the child care occupancy cost Financial Agreement with School Boards.

Should this recommendation be approved at Toronto City Council it will have a significant

negative impact on TCDSB and other School Board’s operational budgets. School Boards will

be required to recover the occupancy costs directly from the third party child care operators. In

turn this will likely result in increased child care fees to parents.

Attached for your information is a letter, dated January 11, 2017, TCDSB has sent to the Chair

of the City of Toronto Budget Committee expressing concern and opposition to the proposed

cancellation of the child care occupancy cost Financial Agreement.

The City of Toronto 2017 Budget Meeting Schedule is as follows:

Re: Toronto 2017 Budget

Dear Mr. Crawford,

The Toronto Catholic District School Board serves approximately 92,000 students (61,000

elementary and 31,000 secondary) on 170 elementary and 30 secondary sites, and in

collaboration with the City, provides a number of essential and valued services to communities,

including child care.

It is with great concern that we have learned that your committee is considering proposals that

would significantly diminish child care services arising from a review of your operating budget

and planning process. This will negatively impact some of the most vulnerable families in our

community.

A number of agreements over the years have been developed to ensure that arrangements are

protected despite ongoing fiscal challenges.

Since 1998, a financial agreement has preserved arrangements with child care operators in our

schools by offsetting costs in the amount of nearly $750,000 a year. These funds not only keep

the access to child care affordable, but they ensure a seamless transition of children to school.

There are currently 43 school sites that support child care and this would be threatened to

Although commitments remain to those families with greatest needs, the reality is that amidst the

other equally daunting challenges like housing affordability, an absence of supports would further

marginalize a greater range of families along the socio-economic spectrum of need. Child care forms

a vital part of the comprehensive and integrated network of support for our communities.

On behalf of those child care centres located in schools we will be meeting with Children’s

services to discuss the City's 2017 Budget and the proposed discontinuing payment of school

occupancy costs.

Please reconsider this aspect of the service reduction strategy in your budget deliberations. Toronto’s

commitment to being a livable, world-class city means that families should have access to the

supports and services they need. In collaboration with all other school boards in the City, we would

like to express our opposition to any reductions that diminish the current operations of our childcares.

At the very least, without any firm commitments for more funding from either the provincial or

federal governments, any change without improvements to service levels should not be contemplated.
