Missouri Mission OfferingThrough the MMO, Missouri Baptists support Christian foster care, start new churches, provide disaster relief, host age-level retreats for Christian young people, and fund other projects that transform lives and communities with the gospel. The theme of this year’s offering is drawn from 2 Corinthians 9:7 - “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful (Greek: hilaros) giver.” Parkway’s goal is $4,500.

A PromiseSome things don’t come back.

Arthur Gordan in his book, “Coaching Champions,” has a great story from his childhood of the importance of a promise.

‘“When I was around 13 and my brother was 10, Father promised to take us to the circus. But at lunch there was a phone call; some urgent business required his attention downtown. My brother and I braced ourselves for the disappointment. Then we heard him say, “No I won’t be down. It will have to wait.”When he came back to the table, Mother smiled. “The circus keeps coming back, you know.” “I know,” said Father, “but childhood doesn’t.”’

God has made many promises to us, His children. He promises rest to the weary: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

He promises strength for those tempted: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (I Corinthians 10:13)

I especially love this promise: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9)

Remember, dear friend, God always keeps His promises. (Joshua 21:45)I promise!Pastor

A Disciple Who Makes DisciplesBeing a disciple can mean making tough choices.

Whenever I greet someone and ask how

they are, nine times out of ten they

use one word to describe their lives…busy.

Few times is this description said in a way

of excitement. Most of the time the person

says it, while catching their breath, with

near disgust. One thing I know is that each

person gets 168 hours a week. What I also

know is that each person’s life looks much

differently than the other. Those 168 hours

look much differently for a stay at home

parent with little children versus a retired

businessman. However, there is a calling

that God calls every Christian to, no matter

their life situation or time in life, and that

is to make disciples.

Busy LivesI’m afraid that for many Christians,

the commission Jesus gives us in Matthew

28:18-20 is one that is not even thought

of when living those 168 hours a week.

Our families’ lives are busier with activity

maybe than ever before. Many of us struggle

to ever say the word “no” to things when

asked. In somewhat of a twisted sense, we

think the busier we keep our children, the

safer and more well-rounded they will be.

We have filled our lives and calendars so

full of activity, that we don’t have time

for God to use us in one of the primary

task he has called us to, and that is making

disciples. The truth is, we don’t focus on

this commission because we don’t have

time to truly be disciples ourselves.

What is a disciple?

The best definition I have ever heard

is this:

A disciple is someone who whole-heartedly

follows the life and example of Jesus, who makes

His mission their mission, His values their

values, and His heart their heart.

Notice that definition isn’t simply

walking an aisle and saying a prayer of

repentance. That is the beginning, and I

rejoice every time I see a person surrender

in those moments. However, a disciple is

one who after this act of repentance, lives

a life of surrender every day. A disciple

is one who desires God to change them

daily, steps out in faith in the way he or she

lives life, and seeks to pattern their heart

and desires to God’s. Being a disciple can

involve making tough choices, saying no

to things that crowd the 168 hours a week

a person has that do not help them be a

disciple of Jesus.

Groups Moving toward a Goal I am so thrilled that this year multiple

groups are beginning to learn from the

scriptures what it means to be a disciple

who makes disciples. Our Men’s Ministry

is embracing this head on this year, and

will be combining classroom with hands

on experiences to move toward this goal.

A new Adult Sunday Group has started,

focusing this year on this as well. Many

other groups are and continue to desire

to grow in these areas as well at Parkway.

These individuals are saying, I want my 168

hours a week to count for the sake of The

Great Commission.

A Commission for EveryoneAt Parkway, we want to equip you

to be a disciple who makes disciples.

This commission is not simiply for the

missionaries we send overseas. It is not

simply for the ministers on staff. It is for

every person at Parkway Baptist Church

who professes they know Christ. These are

exciting days at Parkway. Please let me now

if I can help you and your family become

disciplemakers this year.

Giving TreeOur church’s tall atrium Christmas tree is joyfully adorned with hats, gloves, and scarves in every size and color! Start knitting, crocheting or add some to your shopping list and they will warm grateful hearts and hands in time for Christmas. Bring items beginning November 1.

The Power of the KINGsunday, deCember 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Worship Center

Join the Children’s Choirs as we they present The Power of the KING, a musical written and created by Gina Boe and Barb Dorn, that revolves around radio station K-I-N-G. A major winter storm is threatening to shut down the entire state. The power grid is failing all around, and highways are closing due to dangerous road conditions. A bus transporting a children’s choir on their Christmas tour is stranded by the storm, so the choir takes refuge at the radio station. The timing of the winter storm couldn’t be worse, as the station’s power goes off just as they are about to broadcast the annual Christmas show. Unable to play any recorded music due to the limitations of the backup generator, the radio station staff hastily scrambles to put together a live radio broadcast telling the joyous Good News of the Christmas story, with the help of the stranded children’s choir! And you won’t want to miss the Carolers Choir as they share their songs of Christmas.

Plan now to attend Parkway’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Sunday, November 24, at 5:00 p.m. This is a great time of fellowship with turkey and all the trimmings!

Tickets will be available at the Welcome Center or online at parkwaybaptist.net beginning November 3.

You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Jesus made this

clear to His followers in the Sermon on the Mount early in His ministry (Matt. 5:13-14). As His followers we are to be out in the world sharing the light of His glory and the hope promised in a relationship with Him. We have seen this in action recently at Parkway as we saw the Baker family go out from our church to a new field of ministry in Maryville, MO. While we grieve our loss, we celebrate what God is doing in their lives.

Being salt and light in the world is the topic of a four-week Youth Bible

study that began September 18. The study began with these instructions from Christ and continues by explaining why we are to care for others, who we are to care for, and how Christians are gifted to serve. Middle and High School students are welcome to join in this study and time of worship in the Youth Hall, Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:15 PM.

“Let your light shine before men … and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

The students at Parkway are learning about being salt and light in the world,

however this instruction is not age limited. As followers of Christ, we are to continue that practice and Celebration55+ Ministry has several opportunities to do just that. One of those is our Celebration55+ Choir. You see them sing occasionally in the worship service, but did you know that they also minister at local assisted living facilities?

The Celebration55+ Choir travels to local facilities every month to sing many of the “old favorites” for the residents. For many with memory issues, familiar music

is one of their last memories. Hearing familiar songs can still bring them joy! During those visits, choir members can also visit with residents and brighten their day.

Now the fun part! We would love it if YOU would join the Celebration55+ choir! You don’t need a high level of musical talent. You just need a willingness to minister to others and make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Anyone 55+ is welcome, but we especially need MEN to beef up the low notes. Come give it a try! Practices are Monday at 10:00 AM in the Music Room. You won’t be sorry.

Salt & LightAs His followers we are to be out in the world.
