Winter is upon us, and boy have we been busy preparing. The Club was abuzz with excitement recently, when we were notified of our success in the Clubs Queensland annual awards. Being awarded the Best Casual Dining - Large Club is a great achievement. It goes without saying that it is a result of a massive team effort. Well done to all! Our new winter menu has just been released to great acclaim so I would encourage all members to join us for a fabulous dining experience.

CLUB REPORTS

CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS

Noel Thompson, Chairman

Firstly I would like to share a discussion held with my 8 year old granddaughter.

Granddaughter “Pop you don’t work anymore or earn money”

“Yes I do, I still have my own business”

Granddaughter “No you don’t. You just clean and move chairs”

“What do you mean?”

Granddaughter “Well go into the Club and there is a photo of you and it says Chairman, so all you do is clean and look after the chairs”

And there folks is my role as seen by my granddaughter.

The Club has not had an easy year, with trading down in several areas. The final result was a loss of $46k after depreciation. This result did include $72k one off payments.

A major factor in this poor result was due to 2 major increases in expenses. Firstly, our DNR lease has been increased by $93k and Work Cover increased by $25k.

Although Food and Beverage was up in sales, our final result was slightly down on profit. We have spent the past month reviewing our Main Beach results and are now implementing many changes to improve this area.

Another key area where we suffered badly was the Hardstand, and we have now taken steps to correct this issue.

Hollywell

We finalised our renovations at Hollywell in December, spending $150k. It is worth a visit and you will be impressed with the final results. We are hoping this improvement will see a growth in bar sales.

Marina

Our automated fuel system has been running for some time now and apart from a few bugs in the early days we are very happy with the final result. As we now offer 24 hour service, sales have shown a considerable increase over the previous periods.

Dux

We have now finalised the EPA issues at Dux, and have received our council lease. Our caretakers have done a great job and the grounds look excellent. Congratulations to Bev and Larry. We appreciate your efforts.

Hardstand

As you are no doubt aware, we have had plenty of rain and this does not help our hardstand results. After close examination, it was decided to reduce staff and just concentrate on our key area of income, which is antifouling. This change is now finalised and some dry weather would now be appreciated.

Swing Moorings

No change in this area, it appears Queensland Transport is happy to continue with the current arrangements.

DNR Lease

This is our major concern. Our lease has risen by almost $200k in the past 2 years, and we have concerns that these increases will continue. We are currently exploring all avenues with a view to gaining some concessions from DNR.

Associates

The Associates play a major support role for the Club. Not only do they continually run functions which provide the Club with revenue, but the money they raise is spent providing much needed equipment both at Main Beach and Hollywell. On behalf of the members and staff at SYC, a big thank you for your support.

I would also like to thank all the members who volunteer their time to serve on the numerous committees within the Club. Without this effort it would be very difficult for the Club to function.

On behalf of the members, I would like to thank the management and staff for their great efforts during the year. It is their dedication which has helped the Club through these tough times.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Board Members for their time and effort they have contributed during the year.

As I outlined earlier, it has not been an easy year but our members have shown strong support and patronage to the Club. It is this support that has helped us during these tough times and the board and staff say thank you and appreciate your support.

So from me it’s back to the chairs and hope to see you at the Club soon.

Noel Thompson

NOTICE TO MEMBERSSOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB INC.

I am pleased to announce that we have been fortunate to secure the services of Kelvin Holdt from Changi Sailing Club, where he was running the Sailing School. Kelvin will be joining Shane at Hollywell as the Sailing Co-ordinator/Administrator. He comes to us with fabulous credentials and I’m sure he will fit in very well at SYC. So, come down to Hollywell & give Kelvin a warm welcome.

Our Hardstand has had a very busy month while our Travel-lift has undergone a much needed overhaul – it’s almost just like new! We have also made significant improvements in the Hardstand area to comply with the TEP/WHS&E issues, including completing a major test area for the surfacing.

Another year has passed, along with the completion of the End of Financial Year reports and the Budgets for the year ahead. This has been a massive task and I would like to sincerely thank Sophia Jin for her tremendous efforts ensuring their timely completion.

Dux has finally seen a facelift - for our Caretakers’ comforts that is! Larry & Bev will be enjoying a lovely new kitchen and bathroom; both areas were in serious need of some love and attention.

Currently we are dealing with DERM for permission to put in a pontoon, more news on this issue as it comes to light.

A very special mention has to go to Mr Barry Peachey for his tireless work and efforts as Chairman of the Waterfront Committee. Barry goes above & beyond the call of duty, not only as Chairman but also assisting us with jobs such as sorting out the long term Marina leases.

In closure, I would like to say that it is going to be an exciting year ahead and a challenging one! Why not come in, say Hello & enjoy what’s on offer at our Main Beach & Hollywell Clubhouses.

Safe Boating,

Neale.

International Super Yacht designer Ron Holland was our guest speaker at Southport Yacht Club’s Marine Industry Lunch, held recently on Friday 13th May.

Although Ron made his reputation designing sailboats, these days he makes his money designing powerboats. The Auckland-born, Ireland-based designer has been responsible for some of the world’s most astonishing vessels, among them ‘Mirabella V’, a massive 75-metre creation that is recognised as the largest, single-masted sailboat in the world. The 64-year-old designer certainly started young; he began competitive sailingas a 8 year old, and designed his first sailboat when just 19.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES BIDSouthport Yacht Club hosted a luncheon in March for visiting dignitaries Mike Hooper CEO of the London based Commonwealth Games Federation, Perry Crosswhite, CEO of the Melbourne based Australian Commonwealth Games Association and Mark Peters CEO of the Gold Coast Games 2018 Bid Team.

Mr Hooper was visiting the Gold Coast to review the progress of the Gold Coast’s bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games with November 11, 2011 being the all important date when the delegates from 72 Commonwealth Nations vote to choose the winning City.

There are only 2 Bid groups in the running for the 2018 games, the Gold Coast and the Sri Lankan city of Hambantota.

The Gold Coast Games Bid team is working hard to create a winning bid book before the submission deadline of 11 May 2011 and will be presenting it to the Commonwealth Games Federation with great pride to prove the Gold Coast is the ideal candidate.

The Gold Coast bid will share the story of how the Gold Coast is the tourism capital of Australia and how we all want to share our great city and its wonderful climate with the world. The Bid Book will showcase our existing sporting events that already see tens of thousands of athletes flock to our shores each year and our plans to build a Games Village that meets all the athletes’ needs. The detailed planning will highlight the transport, accommodation and facilities that are bound to make it the most effortless Games in history. The bid book will also demonstrate the Gold Coast’s friendly community, endless sunshine and great food that are second to none and will help athletes deliver a personal best on our shores.

In the middle of the year the member nations of the Commonwealth Games Federation will send their individual delegates to the Gold Coast to review the Bid book to help them decide on who they think should host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The actual vote day is 11th November later this year. Ken Hurling President of Yachting Queensland formally presented an application by YQ and SYC to include Sailing on the 2018 Games programme as either a part of a special group of cultural sporting activities or the medal programme itself.

I must admit to being exceptionally proud of all our hospitality staff as we have recently been honoured with a number of highly respected awards. I have always been strongly committed to ensuring that we provide a happy environment that allows us to attract and retain the best possible employees. Southport Yacht Club was recently honoured as “Best Casual Dining - Large Club” by Clubs Queensland. Special mention needs to be made of our Executive Chef Simon Bond and his team of fantastic Chefs who’s hard work and dedication contributed greatly to this award. We also need to mention our courteous and friendly floor staff, who constantly provide the very highest levels of service to our members, their guests and all visitors to the Club. Wining this industry-wide award is a result of a number of mystery guest visits which makes it all the more satisfying and places us at the very highest echelon of Club cuisine in Queensland.

But, it does not end there. Congratulations to Stacey Brown who was a finalist in the Clubs Queensland Young Managers Award. Well done Stacey, your consistent hard work and enthusiastic leadership has resulted in this honour. Stacey is our Functions Manager and it is not uncommon for her to manage up to 4 separate functions in one weekend, hosting hundreds of guests with poise and grace, and ensuring the event runs successfully and smoothly. Well Done Stacey, you continue to exceed our highest expectations!

Congratulations also to Alicia Chapman (no relation to yours truly). Alicia is a 2nd year apprentice and she won “Best Female Hospitality Apprentice”. If that was not enough of an honour, she then scooped the “Best Overall Apprentice - All Trades” award to boot! Well done Alicia.

Congratulations to our 3rd year apprentice, Fillette Onana-noa, who won the Best Indigenous Apprentice in Queensland.

We are naturally extremely proud of these wonderful individual achievements. Well done to the whole team, you have done us proud!

Our new winter menu has received great plaudits, with our soups and seafood chowder in a cob of bread proving a great hit. Make sure you treat yourself to one next time you’re dining at the Club. The challenge we now face is that having set the bar high and achieving great results, we now dedicate ourselves to improving upon our past achievements. I have no doubt we will rise to the challenge and continue to deliver the very best of our Australian warmth and hospitality.

POWERBOATS @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB

COMMODORE’S TROPHY If you had listened to the forecast for the Commodore’s Trophy weekend you might well have stayed at home – windy and rough, especially on Moreton Bay, where the event was to conclude.Instead, conditions were at the opposite end of the spectrum – a near glass-out both days: perfect weather for such an event. Ten boats lined up, including a welcome RQ member, Charles Kerby, with Nocturn. The Commodore even appeared aboard Chris Oxenford’s Fairwinds – his role being to keep the captain and navigator, Mal Woods, plied with champagne and other forms of refreshment. The first day saw the competition start near the W’s and meander through the channels where dodging Straddie ferries at times demanded as much concentration as taking sights and checking progress. The one notable absentee on the day was Tony Goldner: his boat had a mechanical failure while en route to the start.By sunset the competition was well and truly done and the fleet anchored off Canaipa. Rafting-up, boat-hopping and partying continued well into the night. A highlight was VC Power Ian Hall miscuing his leap aboard a dinghy from the back of Fairwinds: the final scene was Ian in the tide up to his waist while The OX supported him under his arms and tried to prevent the VC from going any deeper. He was successful. It was a GPS competition on the Sunday. This took the fleet on a challenging course on the Bay south of Peel Island, and the contest proved that GPS navigation as an event is anything but boring.A very pleasant BBQ and trophy presentation at Little Ships wrapped up the weekend. When the points were counted it was Barry Peachy’s Suzanne that was declared the deserved winner of the Commodore’s Trophy. Ray Gilbert’s Samadhi was second while Charles Kerby’s Nocturn took third place for RQYS. A computer glitch initially delivered a false result for the GPS competition. When it was rectified Chris Oxenford’s Fairwinds was the winner from Mahogany (Garry Doornboss) and Whitecrest (Dennis Watt).

There was plenty of on-board partying well into the night and lots of laughs. The highlight came when one high profile navigator (who had found a second bottle of rum while aboard Bert Sherring’s boat) didn’t respond when he was advised by a member of the fairer sex that it was time to be back on board his own boat and in bed. Within a couple of minutes he was rounded up and hunted back aboard in a fashion that would have done a sheepdog proud. Very impressive!

WEATHER DEPENDENT By Justin Simmamon (Mystic Lady)

Three times. That’s how many times the SYC cruising group has attempted to get to Pumicestone Passage over the past couple of years. How many times have we made it – none, yet. Luckily, all our organised passages come with the proviso ‘weather dependent’.

This year’s Easter Cruise was 11 days of fun, just in a different location than was intended. 18 boats registered to join the club cruise which started out at Dux and finished at Canaipa Point. Along the way we had 5 days of 25 – 30 knots winds that were saying “stay out of Moreton Bay”. And so we did.

The cruising group took shelter and ate at the well kept facilities of the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club, and took an organised tour to St Helena Island National Park and its prison ruins. Then, for those who dared, an early morning sprint before the winds got up, heading to the Brisbane River.

Five nights up the Brisbane River - this was not the intention – but ended up being a very interesting detour. We knew to exercise extreme caution, look out for debris and obstructions, and that most of the public landing infrastructure had been washed away, but took the river as an excellent proposition to hide from the strong winds further east toward the coast.

Since the floods of January 2011, authorities have been busy identifying and marking submerged hazards and restoring beacons and bouys. We set out for Long Pocket Boat Ramp & parkland for the first night, hoping that the concrete ramp might have survived the flood, but found on arrival that the ramp had been ripped apart. So we headed for a beach downstream at Yeronga and stayed there for the night. On talking to a local we learned that this beach had actually got bigger during the flood – it was now a better beach having been replenished with sand.

The next day our destination was Fig Tree Pocket Boat Ramp, as our scout boat ‘Ace’ had identified some usable parkland and a beach suitable for landing. Again, in this location the concrete boat ramp had been torn apart by what must have been a very fast flowing river. And the following day, our scout boat again went upstream to ensure the Seventeen Mile Rocks were marked, before the fleet headed slowly and cautiously up to the Jindalee Boat Ramp for the night. We found that this was the only usable boat ramp between Jindalee and the City that had survived. River debris increased significantly upstream of the Centenary bridge, with timber pallets, various floating timbers, large logs and car & truck tyres still visibly floating up and down the river. We ventured no further upstream than Jindalee.

One of the most amazing things we noticed on this cruise was the depth of the river. On previous cruises in previous years up the river we generally noticed depths in the 5 – 10 metre range, but the river bed seems to have been scoured out by the flood and frequently shows depths of 15 – 25 metres. In fact at all our anchorages we had to hunt for shallow water to drop the pick! A bit different from our habits at the Gold Coast. Thanks to committee members Bob Montgomery (Ace) and Bob Kershaw (Cats Away) for helping this cruise come together and so enjoyed by all. Next year, or maybe one day soon, the weather will let us make it to Bribie, but we all agreed that the Brisbane River, after the flood, made a great detour to enjoy some boating for Easter 2011.

THE SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIA DAY

It was a sunny day in Auckland, the breeze was 8 knots and the yacht was doing 19 knots. A perfect day for a test run for the new America’s Cup 45 (AC45) Catamaran - the new direction for the Americas Cup.I was lucky to be invited out on the chase boat trying to keep up the America’s Cup Race Management’s test boat as it was put through its paces. This boat is the proto-type for the new AC45 race class. The prototype was designed and built so well that the following one-design boats required minimal modifications. The next two years will see this boat class raced throughout the world to promote the 34th America’s Cup and will be competed for in 72 ft Catamarans. These boats will be constructed in 2012 and will be built to the new rule but the individual teams will determine final designs. One thing that has been highlighted from previous America’s Cup racing is that the costs of staging, running and winning the auld mug is like financing a small country. This was obviously going to be unsustainable and would detract from the intention of the competition. Oracle has made the decision to try and contain these costs. The new rule for the next generation of races and racers is designed to reduce the overall expense of the challenge whilst maintaining the Formula 1 status and the entertainment value of the event.

The AC45’s are some of the highest tech machines on the water but you can buy one for less than the price of a TP52. Then of course, you need to cover the cost of the crew and the transport to from events and then building the actual AC72 boat that will compete for the 34th Challenge but hey it is a start and it will bring a new buzz to the sport. They say you will need a budget of $50 Million in order to stage your challenge - considerably less then the $100 Million + of previous cups. For those on a budget it is a balance between team skill and technology.

The Oracle team decided on standardising the construction of the trial boats and in their search for the latest technology decided on New Zealand as the location to cost effectively design and build the new boats. The craft will use the latest in carbon fibre technologies to build the platform (twin hulls) and the new wing tails for the sailing foils.

The one-design 20m high wingsail consists of two elements. It is a scaled down concept of the 223-foot tall wing that

powered BMW ORACLE Racing’s trimaran USA to victory in the 33rd America’s Cup Match. The sailing foil is made up of a mast section including the leading foil and the adjustable trailing foil. The trailing foil can be trimmed and cambered to provide the best presentation to the wind. The frame is carbon fibre with honeycomb core. The foil covering is made from lightweight low strength heat shrunk polymer. The wing has simple, manual control systems and there are only two headsail options as per the rule, one a furling gennaker and the other a jib.

On their web site Ian Burns Design Coordinator says “The AC45 is small enough that it doesn’t need hydraulics. The loads drop quickly when you get down to a boat of this size. There aren’t even grinder pedestals. The winches are powered by top-handle grinding.”

Unlike the 33rd America’s Cup these AC45’s are fitted with straight dagger boards to keep the design simple and more cost effective.

Boats have now been built for Team NZ, Oracle, Artemis and the Italian Team and more are on the production line. These boats are spectacular at close quarters. Matt Mason from Team Oracle advised that they have reached 29.9 knots in the test boat and they fully expect to exceed 30knots in the right conditions in the final design. They will sail faster than the wind; the apparent wind will always be forward hence no need for spinnakers. They will lift a hull out of the water in a puff of wind and accelerate like a ski boat in a brisk breeze. Even when towing the craft out to the race area they have to be towed at speed else they have the potential to catch the wind and sail off the tow and potentially capsize…. The story goes that the crew were making minor repairs on the test boat and a gust of wind hit the boat; the boat quickly accelerated, tacked and capsized before the crew could react. No one was hurt but the wingsail had a few damaged panels and there were a few lessons learned.

This ability to race in as low as 3 knots of wind will almost guarantee races start at the scheduled time eliminating the frustration for TV coverage. The low drafts and fast construction should allow for grandstand audiences to watch the action. This will dramatically increase the appeal of the sport. It will be something to see when two boats are screaming into the top mark at 25 knots in AC45’s that are 22ft wide with hulls out of the water. Did someone call overlap?

Now in NZ there are 4 teams in training out on the water. Not racing officially but as they say more than one boat on the water is a race. The interviews with skippers and crew show the visible excitement for the prospect of racing these flying machines. They are all learning the skill of flying a hull at precisely the best angle to ensure the power is fully translated into forward speed.

This is the future of the America’s Cup; this is the vision of Larry Ellison and from watching these boats on the waters off of Auckland you can believe the vision is becoming a reality.

SAILING @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB

ZHIK MOTH NATIONALS/WORLDS,BELMONT, NSW. By Graham Sherring

From 5-14 January 2011 I competed in the Zhik Moth Australian and World Titles. My nephew Jack and I had trained twice a week for the past 8 months at SYC Hollywell. We arrived at Lake Macquarie a week early with the intention of getting to know the local conditions and to fine tune our Mach 2 foiling Moths.

We were fortunate to meet up with the American team and had the benefit of some training sessions with them. They were a great bunch of guys and were very generous with their knowledge, especially helping us in fine tuning our set ups.

There were 102 entries in the Nationals of which 72 were Australian. My final result was 12th Australian and 18th overall. My goal for the World Titles was to gain entry into the Gold Fleet. This regatta consisted of 18 races, with the first 9 deciding the split between Gold and Silver Fleets.

After the first 3 races I was 19th, by the second day I was placed 33rd. Day Three found me in 35th position which qualified me for the Gold Fleet, with the cutoff being 55th position. I had achieved my goal!!!

The Gold Fleet consisted of approximately 15 professional full time sailors, including Olympic Gold Medallists and World Champions in other classes.

The last 9 races were very windy and we experienced anywhere from 20-33 knots. My final result was 34th place.

Also another congratulations to Jack Sherring winning the Jr National and World Moth Championship.

What a season we have had in 2010/ 2011. A weather system that hasn’t been seen since 1974 delivered weather in the extremities with racing being cancelled due to no wind, punishing strong winds, severe sea conditions and the floods.

The racing completed was some of the closest we have had across all divisions with the overall series winners decided in the last race in all but two series. There has been a big increase to our fleet sizes in the inshore division with the JaM Series attracting over 40 boats thanks to the injection of some of the keelboats. This is set to continue into next year with the premium tides for the series.

The Sailing Academy has been very busy with a new program in partnership with Sports Super Centre. This, along with our programs on Sunday mornings, has seen over 300 kids learning to sail within the month. Add to this the adults learn to sail courses, advanced training and our Youth, Optimist and Match Racing Squad sessions and it’s easy to see how we are producing such good results abroad.

Our sailors representing SYC have all achieved great results for the Club in Sabots, Optimists, Foiling Moths, off the Beach Cats, Match Racing and the teams in 29er and 49er skiffs and that is set to continue into the coming season with a more diverse, more skilled and better prepared team to take on the rest.

SYC is also hosting far more racing than ever before with four National Championships being run out of Hollywell by January next year. This includes the University Games, Open and Women’s Match Racing and the Sabot Nationals where the Club will see around 130 boats and over 500 people for the week-long event. Add to that

Sail Paradise, Sydney to Gold Coast, NS14 States, Match Racing Queensland Championships, and a bigger and better Great Race and Gold Coast Cat Week along with a bigger sailing schedule than last year for club racing and we have a big season on our hands.

With all of this racing scheduled we are likely to call on you to assist with the hosting of these events and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those that have given their time to volunteer over the past year. The time you devoted is what made racing possible and would not have been possible without your help.

We will also have a new staff member joining our sailing office in the coming weeks and he will be a familiar face to most of you. Kelvin Holdt is taking the role of Sailing Coordinator and this will help to make this season the best yet. Welcome back Kelvin and best of luck in the role.

Best of luck in the next season and pleasant sailing!

On Sunday the 8th of May, the sun was shining and a very gentle breeze was just lifting. It seemed to be the perfect start to a perfect Mother’s Day. As glowing mothers wandered in through the gates after receiving their “special attention” from their children, it was soon time to get down to business... or the champagne... whichever came first.

The 20th Annual Telemachus Jewellery Ladies Day Race was under way with the female skippers in control. To add to the atmosphere, there was some fierce competition on and off the water between a band of pirates, a boat that looked more like a tropical resort rather than a race boat and the Austin Powers crew including a lady who few thought to be just a little.... “Wrong”.

On the water, the atmosphere was relaxing but as the starting signal went the fancy dress and costumes was cast aside and the competitive streak in the females was revealed. This showed in the racing with 7 lead changes during the two laps between Hollywell and Sovereign Island.

Unlike past events, it was a battle of the families with Mother’s/skippers pulling rank as they drove their boats around the course with proficiency. The Comadira’s, Hansen’s, Turners and Lahey’s were all family crews as they combined the perfect day on the water with quality time as a family.

There was even one mother who prefers to be the pit crew rather than being the one on the boats that “tip sideways too far”, but in the spirit of the day, took to the water for the event.

Overall it was a fantastic afternoon of friendly family fun on the water. A huge thank you goes to Telemachus Jewellery for their special sponsorship over the last 20 years. Every year Telman supplies us with beautiful pieces of Jewellery that help make the ladies day really special.

In the 20 years of the event being sponsored by Telman, no skipper won the event twice and this year’s winner, Melissa Turner continues that tradition winning her first title in Quarterflash. Second was Sophie Lahey and family in Still Crazy and third was Lily Pritchard commandeering her dad’s boat, Riff Raff. This made it a podium of SYC youth squad sailors as the ladies showed off the fruits of all their hard work in training for the Match Racing Squad.

Congratulations to all of the teams for an outstanding race and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

To Telman, we thank you for the massive contribution you have made for over 20 years to the club especially this race. The Jewellery you produced this year, as always was amazing with all of the places taking home GOLD. We all appreciate it!

CLUB MARINE COMMODORES CUP Article by Sailing Manager Shane Smith

SAILING @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB

The 2011 edition of the Commodore’s Cup was run on the weekend of 14th & 15th May. Club Marine was again sponsoring the event for the 6th successive year. The fleet consisted of Performance Racing and Cruising Divisions and for the first time defending champion’s “Alacrity” was not competing with boat still receiving a new mast and upgrades as it prepares for the Sydney to Hobart.

The first day’s racing was slow going with shifty light southerly breezes. The winds were short lived leaving the fleet becalmed in stages for the only race of the day. The Gold Coast weather, aside from the lack of wind, was at it’s best for the day. Despite the wind frustrations all competitors enjoyed the day.

It was a battle in the Racing division between the 30 footers with the brand new First 30 “Ensign Racing” taking both line and handicap honours from “Southport Mentor” and “Lee-way” by a narrow margin. The cruising division race was won by “Rumba” in their first race with the club. Second was “Courtesan” and third was the RL24, “Shady Lady”.

Day two could not have been more different, with race officials holding the fleet in the Seaway entrance until they were sure that it was safe to cross the bar safely and proceed with racing. After a short delay the decision as made to race and the fleet made their way to the start line before getting under way for the passage race to Burleigh Heads.

With winds of 20 to 25 knots and seas at two metres and building the fleet found it tough going at first but as the race progressed the winds eased and the fleet pushed forward to the turning mark. Both day one winner’s were forced to retire from racing with “Rumba” suffering from a broken rudder while “Team Ensign” had some problems with set-up as the new boat goes through its paces.

“Lee-way” was the line honours winner but the race went to the team on “Argus” in racing division while “Shady Lady” took the cruising division victory.

The overall winners of the cruising division was Scott Jones and crew aboard “Shady Lady” with Brian Hitchison’s “Rumba” in second and John Lucas’s “Bridget” in third.

Racing division winners were decided on count back after only two races left a three way tie. In the end Sean Allardice and his team on “Fourlove” was declared the winner from “Southport Mentor” and Tony Horkings “Lee-way Ensign” in second and third respectively.

The win for Sean Allardice also coincided with the 17th anniversary of his delivery of “Fourlove” from Cape Town, South Africa.

SYC would like to thank Club Marine for their continued support of the event and congratulate all of the competitors on a great weekend of racing.

Southport Yacht Clubs Sophie Lahey enjoyed a special celebration on the eve of her 16th birthday on 27 March recently.

The vibrant teenage daughter of successful Southport Broadwater sailors Peter and Veronica Lahey achieved a major career milestone when she crewed with Canadian Olympian Katie Abbott, Tara McCall and Angela Farrell to win the Harken International Women’s match racing trophy on Sydney Harbour.

Remarkably the crew who had never sailed together before overcame enormous odds to win the Gold Medal by a narrow 3 second margin in the final. For Sophie, this was a highlight to a career which is destined for success. The talented teenage 29er class dinghy skipper who normally races in the Southport Yacht Club events on the Southport Broadwater displayed a maturity beyond her age to play an important part in the Gold Medal deciding final. “It was a rewarding experience one which I will never forget”, she said. Skipper, Katie Abbott, who hails from Sarnia in Ontario and represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympic regatta, praised the combined skills of her ‘makeshift’ crew. “We had some interesting moments of the course, but managed to keep the boat going in the trying conditions with some excellent crew work”, she said.

Sophie, winner of the International Sail Brisbane 29er class Title, now has a special medal taking pride of place in the family trophy cabinet. She celebrated her 16th birthday racing with crew mate Joel Turner on a windy Southport Broadwater.

BORN TO SAIL. By Ian Grant

COLIN METCHER Inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Australian Sailing Museum, Mandurah WA.Southport Yacht Club Member Colin Metcher was recently inducted to the Australian Sailing Museum's Hall of Fame. With a racing career spanning over 55 years, Colin is widely regarded as one of Australia's sailing pioneers. With the help of his wife, Ann, Colin successfully blazed a trail at local and international events. Speaking at the Induction ceremony in Mandurah, Colin vividly recalled his toughest race. The 1980 Hoek v Hooland-Scheveningen-Hoek v Holland multihull race. The race attracted over 250 boats, with a few "works" entries from Hobie, Nacra and Dart. Gale force winds hit the entire fleet at the turning mark at Scheveningen, giving the Fleet an epic 3 hour slog to windward along the Dutch coast. There were a number of very dramatic rescues by Dutch Naval vessels, helicopters and trawlers, with a number of boats being abandoned at sea. Sadly, 2 lives were lost, along with a total of 50 boats. As Colin says, "to survive and win in a boat we designed and built in Australia was a big moment!"

The 1974 Esperance to Albany Ocean race also rated highly with Colin. "Sailing an ill-prepared boat with a novice crew, I helmed the whole distance (36 hours) to win line honours, handicap and race record", he recalled.

His most satisfying win came at the 1979 British and European Championships, mainly because Colin sailed with Ann and were seen as a "quaint Aussie couple on their honeymoon", that is until the racing started! The 1981 World Championships marked a personal triumph for Colin. "To have the Worlds on our home waters, bringing visiting sailors from the UK, Holland, Belgium, Singapore, New Zealand and every Australian State was extremely gratifying. To win it was the icing on the cake."

It goes without saying that Colin is extremely deserving of this remarkable compliment to a career of dedication, commitment and ultimately great success. Now 70, Colin can still be seen racing and still enjoys the Southport to Manly Great Race. As he says, "5 to 6 hours in a 14 ft high performance skiff at my age is tough", but very satisfying we would think! As well as multiple Club, State and National Titles, Colin has won 10 Club Championships at SYC.

Leo Gumley passed away on Sunday, 1st May 2011. Although no longer a member, most of the older members will remember Leo fondly. During the 60s, 70s and 80s, Leo worked tirelessly to help raise the necessary funds to keep the Club as close to the Black line as possible. With the help of first wife Coral, & later his second wife Val, Leo was always there to assist in any way. Leo formed very successful Raffles & wow he raised some money! Whenever we fell short of a caretaker for DUX, Leo always held up his hand.

Leo was one of those fine Club Members who put so much into creating the SYC we know and enjoy today. The Photo (right) is a piece of SYC history and shows Leo and friends enjoying some quality time on the Broadwater.

The Julian Rocks Race has now come and gone for another year. The 5 racing boats completed the course in the wee hours of the morning, whilst 3 of the 5 cruising division fleet finished just after Sunrise on the Sunday morning. This would have been great racing. Unfortunately the winds were light and discouraging to some whom retired earlier.

This year Evolution Sails, a 6m Sports Boat, entered the Julian Rocks Race to encourage smaller racing boats to compete in offshore events. With extra safety precautions in place we were set for the journey. The forecast was looking light and tight reaches were the order for the day. Graham Sherring, the owner of the boat, and Evolution Sails decided to whip up a Code 0 to drag us south. It was a spectacular morning with hardly a ripple on the water. Out in the starting area we got to test the newly designed and built Code 0 prior to the start. It’s a glamour! With the start line set and the sequence underway both Racing & Cruising divisions were off to a relaxing drift across the line heading south with a 4 knot SE breeze. The fleet was split almost immediately with the majority opting to follow the beach. Evolution opted to head offshore into the southern current and clouds in search of breeze. We decided to get out the new sail and put it through its paces. Our boat speed doubled to 7 knots in the light shifty breeze as we pulled away from “Four Love”. Cook Island was getting closer as too was the dark sails of “Ryujin” along the coast. Rounding Snapper Rocks, “Ryujin” was 2 minutes in front, with “Alacrity” only boat lengths away. Rounding Cook Island in a drag race with “Alacrity”, we headed south following “Ryujin”. The breeze swung around to an 8 knot easterly.

Seeing a shadow in the water ahead we were a little cautious as we approached. We soon realised this was a 6ft Tiger Shark, so we quickly pulled all our limbs back on board. Not more than 2 miles further south we ran into the parent of the earlier Tiger Shark looking more than 10ft long sizing us up for lunch. The time was approaching 1615 hours as the first boat “Ryujin” rounded Julian Rocks radioing in with an estimated finishing time of 2333 hours, followed by “Alacrity” 20 minutes later and “Evolution” at 1645 hours with “Leeway Ensign Racing” following us around the crystal clear waters of the Rock 1½ hours behind and “Four Love” about another 1 hour further behind. We now headed back into a 10 knot NE Sea breeze. It seems all the yachts struggled to make radio contact with Point Danger for the compulsory check

in and their estimated finish-time, so boats passed numbers amoung themselves. The SKEDs were supposed to take place with Point Danger VMR at 1800 but nothing was heard. We later we realised they were working on daylight savings time.

Day turned to night with “Ryujin” & “Alacrity” disappearing into the darkness. Occasionally we saw a stern light from “Alacrity” but this too faded into the darkness. “Leeway Ensign” seemed to be gaining rapidly from behind when they tacked onto port and they disappeared out to sea.

By this stage we were all alone in the darkness until the arrival of the full moon. The only boat we had in sight was a large cruise ship heading north out on the horizon. With the strong currents and shifty breeze we opted to stick to the beach and sail along the breakers. We found no advantage to head out into the NE sea breeze offshore which enventually went to the NW later in the evening.

Approaching Cook Island we started hearing VMR Point Danger calling all the yachts. Most boats made contact. We were 100m east of Cook Island at this stage. Unfortunately we had to get the GPS fired up and hand over some LAT & Long coordinates for the SKED to make it all official. From here we rounded Snapper Rocks and headed into Tugun where we were greeted with a pod of about 20 dolphins frolicking around with us for a mile or so. We followed the shark nets along the beach all the way to the finish at 0350:08 hours Sunday Morning (19 hours) in third place across the line and first place by 4 minutes on handicap over “Alacrity”. Finishing first on line honours was “Ryujin” 0032:32 hours (15 ½ hours) followed in close second by “Alacrity” 0046:55 hours (15 ¾ hours).

The cruising division results went to “Affascinante” followed closely by “Alycone” by 44 seconds and third place to “Courtesan”.

The race was light but a very enjoyable overnight sail. The fishing wasn’t as exciting, for us anyway! A big thanks to SYC for allowing us to enter with our extra safety provisions, the Sponsors, the Competitors and Evolution Sails for there great design skill and quick manufacture of all of our sails!

Winning the Navigators Award for their closest finishing time was Sean Allardice in Four Love for the third year running.

We hope to see you all out on the water again soon!

KEEL BOAT GROUP @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB

END OF SEASON PARTY Article by Ray McMahonWell another Summer has been and gone and yet again it was a great season for sailing on the Gold Coast. Our Wild Oats Wines summer twilight series has wrapped up with Gino Knezic on Piccollo 2 picking up the major trophy for overall winner. With a vast array of yachts joining in our series it means each week is interesting with no one yacht ever starting favourite. We are now into our Winter twilight series that will be hotly contested as there are a few new boats that look awfully quick.

We have also re-introduced our Winter inshore/offshore series this year. It will be raced on weekends from early May right through to late July. If you have a yacht, or wish to crew on a yacht, please feel free to contact the Club or one of the KBG committee and we will steer you in the right direction. It's a fun series that we believe we can enhance to become one of the sought after trophies at the Club.

If you ever wondered how strong sailing is getting at Southport Yacht Club then look no further!!! Over the last few months there have been some notable "power boat" enthusiasts seen crossing the line onto a sail boat!!!! Yes, our very own Commodore Power Boats has been seen racing a sailing boat along with a crew of past commodores. No names on the past commodores but one of them does have a neatly trimmed little moustache. But wait, there's more!! A certain President of the Associates and immediate past president were spotted doing a twilight race - ON A SAIL BOAT!! I'm glad to say I think they have all finally seen the light and come across to the beautiful side of boating. You are all very welcome and we look forward to seeing more of our power boat friends on our yachts.

With the Sydney to Gold Coast race and the Whitsundays series only a matter of weeks away now our minds are all starting to picture the sun and sand of the Northern waters. We would like to wish all of the SYC boats contesting these 2 events all the best and bring home the silverware.

SYC Social Golf Club Tour to Yamba and Maclean – 1-4th May 2011

The plan for our SYC Social Golf Club 2011 May Golf Tour, inspired by Captain Graham Webb, was to play the Maclean and Yamba Golf Courses but the weather gods had other ideas for us.

However we can most certainly recommend Yamba/Maclean to any SYC golfers that might enjoy an inexpensive and uncomplicated golfing experience. We enjoyed our experience despite not being able to play on the Yamba golf course.

We were pleased to have a number of guest players to bolster our numbers. Regrettably, several regular SYC golfers, such as Judy Collins, Susie Wallace and Don Stead, were holidaying overseas, which reduced our usual turnout somewhat.

Yamba had received an indecent amount of rain during the week preceding our tour (about 12 inches in the old measures), so we were not able to play there. Fortunately, we were booked to play at Maclean Golf Club first up, on the Monday, and all of our members found that course to be interesting and challenging, so we played there again the following day.

The wet conditions did reduce our number of players from 20 to 16 persons, due to some last minute drop-outs, but we had a competitive quorum, with another four non-players in train.

The Yamba Aston Motel was a pleasant and friendly place to stay and is recommended.

They say that an army marches on its belly and that certainly applies to golfers. Pre-dinner drinks commenced by the pool at 5.30 pm on Sunday (the mosquitoes were not invited but they came anyway). On Sunday evening we dined en masse at El Pirata – a South American Tapas bar/restaurant – generally agreed by all to be great food. On Monday night, it was Sassafras pizza/pasta restaurant – even better - and Tuesday at the Yamba Bar and Grill for steaks and seafood.

The Maclean course was moist (heavy dew), which made play harder for most, with only one player, Helga Lowson making a par round of 54 points. Michael Callanan and Tony Bailey (previously an “experienced Log Event team”) were close behind, both with 53 points.

Tuesday Golf Round Two – A superb day, brilliant, sunny weather and the Maclean golf course sparkled. Michael Callanan (56) and Tony Bailey (63), sharing a cart together, fought doggedly through the first nine holes before the latter eased ahead in the final straight. Golf Captain Graham Webb and Bert Sherring both had commendable rounds of 57 points each.

Presentation of prizes was made at the Maclean Club House, with most players getting some reward for Nearest the Pin, Longest Drive or being in the top eight positions each day.Overall Results (for two rounds)1. Tony Bailey 116 points2. Michael Callanan 109 points3. Graham Webb 107 points

And finally, a concluding comment. You can always tell that an event has been well managed and organised when the Club President, Club Captain and the representative Past-Commodore take out the top three positions overall !!

We should probably have an audit of scores and handicaps sometime – maybe next year?

Southport Yacht Club │ iN SYnC │33

Yet another tick off the bucket list! Richard and I have cruised through the Panama Canal and what an amazing adventure!

Back in the best country in the world, we were really happy to have our feet firmly planted in Oz. A few days after we returned we had our Associates Getaway to the Tweed River. Again, we were reminded of our very own beautiful natural waterways and hidden gems. Over 60 guests enjoyed a relaxing and remarkable luncheon cruise in fabulous weather plus a jaunt through the charming village of Tumblegum. On our return, the club ensured we were welcomed with scrumptious canapés and cool drinks.

A special thanks to Anne Maree Von Zeppelin for the wonderful itinerary, hostesses Lyn and Gail and Lorraine Alexander along with Nancy Morrison and Leonie Bell who arranged our raffles and ensured all our guests were happy day-trippers. We are so sorry many on the wait list missed out and thus encourage you to book early for our next soiree to celebrate CHRISTMAS IN JULY see Whats On page 14 for details.

By the time this edition goes to print we will have hosted a function to celebrate 40 years of Associates Membership at Southport Yacht Club. This event follows our Annual General Meeting at which I will have committed to steer the committee for another twelve months. I look forward to reporting on our frivolity in the next edition.

One of our valued and consistent sponsors is Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa. Not only have they provided a prize for our committee raffles but they have extended an invitation to all our members to enjoy this fabulous package as outlined below.

The committee hopes you enjoy our efforts to entertain and provide club improvements for your comfort. Please support our functions and events and bring your friends along.

Don’t forget to make an early booking for our next adventure to celebrate CHRISTMAS IN JULY! This year we have planned a Hinterland Bus Trip. Departing 9am from the SYC Clubhouse in Main Beach on 28 July, we will head up to Tamborine for morning tea, enjoy the Gallery Walk for shopping and souvenirs, and then enjoy lunch at the Fox & Hounds Hotel. Places are limited so please book early at SYC reception on 55913500.
