PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

WELCOME BACK

Welcome! I hope your holidays were relaxing and that you are commencing school re-invigorated and

ready to continue with the important partnership in which we work together to maximize learning and the

educational outcomes for all our students. I am pleased to advise that we have had an extremely smooth

and successful start to the school year.

I trust from the response of the children that you have all been able to enjoy a happy and sociable holiday.

The school grounds were left in a healthy state thank you to all those families who used it responsibly.

Throughout the holidays the following works were completed:

The wall between the corridor and rooms 5 and 6 have been replaced with windows to allow

computers outside the classroom

The students in rooms 5 and 6 will place their bags in pigeon holes rather than on pegs

The universal toilet adjacent to the Female Staff toilets have progressed in its construction and should

be completed within a fortnight.

A flood retaining wall has been constructed along the back of the school to assist with the prevention

of flooding onto neighbouring properties

The grounds were maintained by Tony Twining, our maintenance man

The school was given a thorough clean by John Blair; the corridors and windows sparkled upon our

return to school

These works have contributed to being suitably ready for our students in the school’s grounds and

facilities.

Currently we are looking at three companies that have tendered their interest in developing the Food

Science and Technology Room which will impact on the staffroom and the Library once the works

commence.

INFORMATION EVENINGS

As is our practice, the teachers will provide an Information Evening for our parents so that they can

clarify their teaching practices and expectations for the 2012 Learning Year. You will receive a notice

from your child revealing times and dates shortly; it is expected that they will be held in the week

commencing 20th

February. More information will follow via your child.

PARENT/TEACHER EXCHANGE

Our staff believe that this is an important opportunity for parents to provide information that maybe

pertinent to their child’s ability to learn and success at school. If you have information that is vital to a

better understanding of your child’s needs please contact your child’s teacher and arrange a mutually

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SCHOOL CAPTAINS

On Friday 10th

February we will officially acknowledge our School Captains for 2012 and welcome them

to their new role. Caitrin MacDowall and Dan Buchanan will be congratulated and awarded their badges.

They will also sign their contracts agreeing to perform their duties responsibly and to be outstanding role

models. Congratulations to Caitrin and Can who have started the year performing their roles with real

commitment.

MAROONDAH EAST STUDENT LEADERSHIP DAY

This year our School Captains and House Captains will be involved in a Maroondah East Cluster Student

Leadership Program. The Student Leadership Day will be held on Wednesday 22nd

February, 2012 and will

include seven schools from the Maroondah area. It will be facilitated by the highly experienced and

inspirational trainer and consultant Kate Wilde, from The Workshop. We believe that this program will

provide an excellent educational experience where our Year Six student leaders learn what it means to be a

caring, confident leader and a good citizen. Students will be accompanied by Christine Finighan and will

present their learning at a later date in the year at a parent evening.

An important aspect of the program is the peer educator approach, where ten Year 10 Heathmont College

students will mentor and coach our student leaders.

Not only will this program build the leadership skills of all the young people involved, but it will build a

sense of community and active citizenship for the students, families and schools participating.

TISSUES AND CHAMPAGNE

As is our tradition we would like to welcome our Prep parents to our

school and find out how their young ones, as well as themselves are

settling; The Parents’ Association will do this in style on Friday 10th

February as they provide a special morning tea including (for the

daring), champagne. Parents of our new prep children are able to

share the joys and tears of losing their little ones to school and to

once again have the opportunity to forge new friendships and connections. Thank you to our

Parents’ Association for a very worthwhile event. This will occur after Friday morning

assembly, at about 9.30am.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Our new students would have received various forms which require attention:

Medical Management Plan

School Asthma Action Plan

Permission to participate in Local Excursions

Permission to be photographed

Internet Code of Practice, and

Permission to conduct Head Lice inspections

Please ensure that these forms are completed and returned to your child’s teacher by 17th

February, as

this information allows for the efficient running of the school’s programs as well as your children’s

safety.

Please address every form, placing some response (that is consent or non-consent) and returning it so

that we are aware of your wishes, thank you.

For our families who have already completed these forms in previous years, please advise the office

if circumstances have changed. The Medical/Asthma plans and Court Orders are particularly

important and should be updated whenever changes occur.

Remember that medicines will be stored in a safe room and students will be administered at the correct

time under the close supervision of one of our First Aid staff. We require all medicines to be stored in a

safe place so that no other children will be at risk of swallowing or tampering with them. Thank you for

your cooperation.

STUDENT SAFETY

Any families who have information about the custody of their children and/or other restrictive court

orders should notify the school so that we can carry out our responsibilities in ensuring that children are

where they should be out of school hours. If you have any Court Orders or relevant information provide a

copy to the school as soon as possible.

As school resumes it’s a timely reminder for all of us to promote safe road habits, parking responsibly

and always expecting your children to use the crossings provided.

CANTEEN

The Canteen commenced its operation on Wednesday 8th

February and will continue

every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If you can spare any days to help serve and

prepare lunches in the Canteen please inform Vicki Allan, our Canteen Manager, or

the ladies in the Office. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Please make

sure that you provide money for your child’s lunch order; students without money in

their orders will be provided a vegemite sandwich.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS

As you would be aware, staff resumed school on Wednesday 1st February and spent three days working

together to ensure a great start to the learning year. Below is an insight in the professional development

that occurred:

Day 1: AM: HEPS induction, sharing of administration and expectations so that all staff

are clear and consistent with standards and practices

PM: Hand over of student information: all teams sat together to discuss every student in relation

to social, emotional and academic needs so that all teachers had a good understanding of their

students so that they can monitor and track progress throughout the year.

Day 2: Restorative Practices: David Vinegrad worked with staff on conflict resolution

and relationship building activities that should further support the wonderful rapport between

staff/students and students/students

Day 3: Reporting and Assessment:

AM: On Demand Testing: Sue Fraser introduced staff to this valuable program, demonstrating

how results can provide information that will direct teaching and student learning.

PM: SPA: Student Performance Analyzer: Phillip Holmes-Smith demonstrated this brilliant

program in which teachers can manipulate the data to highlight students requiring

reinforcement or consolidation in a particular area of learning or those who are ready to

move to the next challenge or level of learning

SAD NEWS

You may have heard that Kari Nestic, mother of two of our young students, has lost her battle with cancer

and passed away last Friday. Kari is remembered by always having a lovely smile, always positive and a

loving mother to her two children and loving wife to Michael. Her loss has touched the HEPS

community and I’m sure you join me in expressing our sincere condolence to Michael and the family.

Kari will be laid to rest on Friday 10th

February.

MUTUAL RESPECT

As we enter another year of learning I would just like to remind everyone to support the Dignity and

Respect Statement (attached to the Newsletter). It is important that all members of the HEPS community

feel welcomed and safe as we support each other in the education of your children and our students. This

is important for parents too; I trust that all parents feel welcomed, respected and safe as they move within

the school’s environment and neighbouring community.

It promises to be another exciting and productive year at HEPS; this year we celebrate our 50th

birthday

and we look forward to a celebratory activity each term. This term we are preparing a Family Pursuit

activity to be held on Sunday 25th

March, so diarise this day and keep it free so you and your family can

join in the fun!

SPORTS UPDATE:

SPORTS NEWS: Welcome back to term one in 2012. I hope your holidays were

wonderful and full of activity. Mine were eventful to say the least! My 13 year old

daughter split her head open on a boat propeller requiring 4 stitches on New Year’s day

at Rosebud hospital. I managed to knock my left leg against my crazy dog’s tooth and ended up with

intra-muscular penicillin injections, large doses of oral antibiotics and cellulitis. Suffice to say I

thankfully avoided a hospital stay also at Rosebud hospital! Despite these dramas, my family enjoyed a

lovely break at Mc Crae during January.

DISTRICT SWIMMING CARNIVAL will be held at Tintern pool on Monday 20th

February from

11.30 – 1.15pm (approx). Trials will be held on Thursday 9th

February at Ringwood pool and the

selected team will have an extra training session on the following Thursday 16th

February also at

Ringwood pool. (7.00 -8.15am) Thankyou to my wonderful swimming teacher/parent helpers who are

assisting me with the trials and the final selection of the swim team for this year. Parents are most

welcome to attend the swimming carnival and a further notice will be sent out with all the necessary

information if your child/ren is selected.

Team Vic Trials will be held this term for the following sports: cricket (on line nominations), tennis,

netball, basketball, football and soccer. If your child is selected, the relevant information will be given

to them and parents will be expected to organise their own transport to and from the venue. Selections are

for grade 5 and 6 students only (with some exceptions).

Summer Interschool sport will commence next Friday, 17th

February against Park Orchards PS. A

note will be sent home requiring immediate payment of approximately $60 per child to cover buses,

equipment and Ringwood District affiliation fees. This cost will cover both Summer (Term1) and

Winter (Term 2) sport as per last year. Any parents who would like to assist with coaching, umpiring or

scoring please complete the form and return to me asap. Summer sport will be held from 9.30 – 11.00am

every Friday throughout term 1.

Sports for Summer sport are: Basketball (Girls and Mixed), Cricket, Rounders (Girls and mixed),

Teeball (Girls and mixed), Bat tennis, and Volleystars. All students will be given the opportunity to

participate in one of these sports at a training session on Friday (Feb 10th

) morning at 10.00-11.00am.

NB: Preference will be given to grade 6s for their first choice of a particular sport for interschool sport

during term 1 and term 2.

HEPS Harriers will be commencing again soon. As mentioned last year, I am very keen to start a “KM

Club” at HE Parker on a Monday morning at 8.15am – 8.45am (approx). Obviously I will require a

number of parent helpers in order for it to run smoothly. If you are interested and/or have any helpful

suggestions with the “logistics” of such a club, I would appreciate your advice and assistance.

Good luck to all the cricketers in finals and to all the netballers (and a variety of other sports) who are due

to start their new seasons in a few weeks.

LIBRARY NEWS – FEBRUARY 2012

It is exciting to be back and into the swing of things again. This will be a busy year in the library and students are already keen to start borrowing. 2012 is the National Year of Reading, so we will be celebrating with lots of fun activities throughout the year. Things you need to know All Grades come to the Library once a week for borrowing. Please don’t forget that your child needs a library bag to borrow books. Books are on loan for 2 weeks. If a student requires the book for longer, we can arrange to have the book renewed. Unfortunately, if the book is not returned within the specified time, a reminder notice will be sent out asking that the book be returned. If books are not returned to the library, families are asked to pay for the book. If your child needs help in choosing appropriate books or if they are a reluctant reader, I am happy to help in their selection of books – all they have to do is ask. We have many fabulous resources in our Library and it is great to see our students so excited about borrowing and reading. It is important, that we, as adults, demonstrate the importance of reading in our own lives, as well as encouraging our children to find the joy in opening a book. Share a book with your child. Talk about it and relive the magic. What a special thing to be able to do each day. Wednesday Book Club Wednesday Lunchtime Bookclub will be starting next week. We have lots of fun discussing books and talking about who might like to read them. We play games about books and the characters in them and we also get to be the first students to look at, and borrow, the new books in the library. We meet at 1.30pm every Wednesday at lunchtime in the library. All students in grades 3 – 6 are welcome to attend. Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) will be starting soon and all HEPS students from Prep to Grade 6 are encouraged to take part. Our aim for 2012 is to have ALL HEPS students enrol and complete the Challenge. At HEPS we believe that the PRC is important as it helps motivate students to read and engages them in reading as an enjoyable activity. It also teaches them to be disciplined and to develop sound organisational skills. Why our school library is important A Library is a great place to escape from the world we live in. Books open up a whole new world for children, but we, as adults and educators, have to encourage them to open up the book in the first place. Within the library we are able to pick up another world and dive into it. The ways in which libraries fulfil the spirit, body and mind are amazing in themselves. Our world may see different technologies take it over and new inventions aid us in simple tasks, but nothing will replace books in the task of teaching us all about life. School libraries are an integral part of the school curriculum. The following are some reasons why.

They foster a love of literature and in turn encourage independent reading.

School libraries encourage the getting of information, the use of information, knowledge,

computing, reading, independence and academic achievement.

They provide and promote quality fiction to develop and sustain in students the habit and

enjoyment of reading for pleasure and to enrich students’ intellectual, aesthetic, cultural

and emotional growth.

Studies have proven that reading for pleasure has been found to increase vocabulary,

comprehension, verbal fluency and levels of general knowledge.

Libraries cater for differences in learning and teaching styles through the provision of a

wide range of materials, both fiction and non-fiction.

There is a compelling link between a well resourced school library and student

achievement.

The internet is among a number of resources available for finding information, but is not

a replacement for books.

The amazing amount of useful information found on the net has engendered the false

assumption that everything can be found online – this simply not true! Many authors and

publishers will not allow their works to be freely accessible over the internet. Current

copyright law protects works for 70 years from the death of the author. For example,

Wuthering Heights may be available on the internet, but Harry Potter won’t be for at least

another 70 plus years!

Studies have shown that students who frequent well-stocked libraries end up with higher

results than those who do not.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION The parents association will hold its AGM on Tuesday 6th March commencing 2.30 pm in the staffroom. All parents are welcome. More details will be provided in the future.

The EFL junior season commences on April 15th and we have places in all teams for children born in the years 1993 to 2003 to play in age groups from Under 9's up to Under 17's in the Eastern Football League junior competition. As a sporting club we provide the opportunity to the children and youth of our local community to learn, develop skills and participate in the game of Australian Rules Football, at an affordable cost to all families. Dear Parent / Guardian Financial assistance for your child’s education The Education Maintenance Allowance helps families on a low income with financial assistance to cover the cost of essential educational items like textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child. In 2012 the annual Education Maintenance Allowance payment is $235 for primary school students and $470 for secondary students from eligible families. This amount is split evenly between the parents/guardians and the school to support your child’s education. You can receive the parent/guardian portion of the Education Maintenance Allowance by direct bank deposit into your nominated bank account or by cheque. If your child is starting Prep or Year 7, and you are eligible for the Education Maintenance Allowance, you will also receive the $300 Victorian Government School Start Bonus to help with the extra costs associated with starting primary or secondary education. EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE & SCHOOL START BONUS: INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / GUARDIANS The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) provides assistance to eligible families by helping with the costs associated with the education of their children. The School Start Bonus (SSB) is a one off payment of $300 for students commencing Prep and Year 7 in 2012 to assist parents with the start up costs of students starting school. In 2012 the EMA payment for parents/guardians is $235 for primary school students and $470 for secondary students. This amount is split evenly between the parents/guardians and the school and is paid in two instalments as per the schedule of payments set out in the table below. The SSB payment of $300 is paid in full directly to the parent/guardian by EFT (electronic funds transfer). Students turning sixteen during the year will be paid on a pro rata basis up to and including the month they reach the age of sixteen.

The first instalment will comprise 70 per cent of the EMA and will be paid from March 2012. The second instalment will comprise the remaining 30 per cent and will be paid from August 2012. This payment schedule recognises that families incur the highest educational costs at the start of the school year. Eligibility for EMA To be eligible to receive the EMA, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen; and

be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act 2004 or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a foster parent; and

submit your application to the school by the due date. The eligibility criteria must be met as at the first day of 1st Term (1 February 2012 which is the first day for teaching staff) for the first instalment and the first day of 3rd Term (16 July 2012) for the second instalment. Any applications based on Centrelink payments that are not income tested (e.g. Carer Allowance) are not eligible unless the claimant, in their own name, complies with the second dot point above. The EMA is payable up until the age of 16 years. Once a student turns 16, you may continue to be eligible for financial assistance from Centrelink. For further information visit

The one off SSB payment of $300 is deposited into parents nominated bank accounts from mid January 2012 onwards. Eligibility for SSB To be eligible to receive the SSB, you must:

submit your application to the school by the closing date of 29 February 2012. Application forms A combined EMA/SSB application form is available from your child’s school. A separate application is required for each school if you have children attending different schools. Please submit your application to your child’s school by 29 February 2012 for the first instalment of the EMA and by 3 August 2012 for the second instalment of the EMA unless your child remains enrolled at the same school and you were paid the first EMA instalment. Payment methods EMA Direct Bank Deposit (EFT) payment option: EFT payments can only be made to the parent’s nominated bank account for parents choosing the EFT payment option. Please advise your child’s school if your nominated bank account changes during the year. EMA Cheque payment option: Cheques payable to parents will be sent to the school for distribution for parents choosing the cheque payment option. Please advise your child’s school if your address changes during the year. SSB can only be made by Direct Bank Deposit (EFT) payment: EFT payments can only be made to the parent’s nominated bank account. School portion of the Education Maintenance Allowance Schools must spend the school’s portion of the EMA on essential educational items for which all parents are normally expected to provide. Such items could include:

student text books

student stationery (e.g. pens, pencils, exercise books, work-books)

materials for electives where the student consumes or takes possession of the finished articles (e.g. home economics etc) or the payment sought is the difference between the basic materials/services and the higher cost alternatives

programs provided by outside specialists (e.g. visiting artists, speakers, performers)

camps and excursions which are integral to the curriculum and which all students are expected to attend

school identification cards

school uniform

official diary/handbook/work planner

student computer printing beyond the needs of the eight Key Learning Areas (e.g. personal use). 3

The school’s portion of the EMA cannot be used to offset voluntary contributions. Common examples of materials or services which are supported through voluntary contributions are:

equipment purchases

buildings and grounds beautification

library fund

general contribution to the school. Schools need to inform parents on request of the cost of the items on which they propose to spend the school’s portion of the EMA. Schools are only custodians of the school portion of the EMA. If a student transfers to another school, the balance of the school’s portion must accompany the student to the new school. Any portion of the EMA which is not expended by the end of the year must be returned to the parent/guardian. However, with agreement of the parent/guardian, this money can be carried over into the next year or other appropriate arrangements made to suit the needs of the student.
