“WHAT MAKES A GREAT SCHOOL?”
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear parents,
Firstly welcome back! It’s great to witness so many of our students happy to be back at school and who
have started with a positive and fine attitude that will certainly support them in their learning. I trust
everyone was able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends and to take good advantage of the
gorgeous weather. People who used our school grounds during the holidays, did so in a fit and proper
manner and so we were able to resume school with all facilities intact. Mr John Blair gave the school a
thorough clean; the floors in the corridor sparkle, Mr Tony Twining kept the gardens and grounds neat
and safe and the talented Miss Beck Lord and Miss Emma Cody designed and painted a delightful image
on the Prep Bungalow.
A new telephone system has been installed throughout the school; now every classroom and specialist
area has a telephone, making communication more efficient and effective. The phones also contain an
‘alert’ button which should assist in emergency situations.
Term Two promises to be an exciting term with many experiences and opportunities already planned as is
evident by the Term Two Calendar, uploaded on tiqbiz. You will notice in particular NAPLAN times for
our students in grades three and five, Education Week, ANZAC day ceremonies and the grade 5/6 camp.
You may wish to place this calendar in an obvious place and add new activities and dates as they
eventuate.

ANZAC DAY Our students have been represented at two ANZAC ceremonies:
The Junior School Council and our School Captains attended a ceremony
at Ringwood Lake on Wednesday 18th
April. The students were
commended on their reverence and good manners.
The School Captains, House/Vice House Captains and Social Service
monitors attended a ceremony at the Shrine on Thursday 19th
April. I
would like to share with you a letter provided by our travelling legatee,
Mr David Heale:
‘Dear Kitty,
This note is to express my appreciation for your school's participation in
yesterday's Legacy Children's Service at the Shrine.
It was my impression that the children were interested and involved and
that they certainly had an appreciation of the significance of the service.
Their behaviour was exemplary and those with whom I spoke were
delightful. In short, they were a credit to their parents and school and
are on the road to becoming good Aussie citizens.
Thank you for your support for Legacy.
Yours sincerely,
(Legatee) David Heale
Yarra Valley Group of Melbourne Legacy’
The whole school demonstrated their respect for the ANZACs by participating in a short ceremony and a
minute silence on Tuesday 24th
April.
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES
Again this term we are able to provide our students the opportunity to engage in
physical activities after school, thanks to Mr Deith:
Multi-skills will be provided for grades 1 and 2 students
Basketball will be provided to our grades 3 – 6. Watch out for the notices
requesting ‘Expressions of Interest’
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
Our year 3 and 5 students will sit for Literacy and Numeracy tests on Tuesday 15th
May, Wednesday 16th
May and Thursday 17th
May. The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents and
teachers about a child’s performance in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy. This
information can be used to support teaching and learning programs and improve student achievement. Be
aware though, that this is only one test on one day in your child’s life and is certainly not the ‘gospel’ on
your child’s success.
2012 ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY
Students in grades 5/6 will have the opportunity to complete this survey which will provide valuable data
and feedback that enables us to better understand how our students perceive HEPS and how it impacts on
their learning and school performance.
MOTHERS’ DAY STALL
The Parents’ Association are busy preparing for the popular Mothers’ Day stall.
Kathy our new President has suggested that they display the gifts in the foyer during
the week of the stall so that children can plan what present they wish to buy for their
mothers; a lovely idea and one that allows the children to have a preview of potential
gifts.
FAREWELL COLLEEN SEDGMAN
On Friday we will farewell Colleen who has been an amazing and supportive parent
helper and when her children left HEPS an invaluable volunteer. Colleen has been
the coordinator of the CRE team, also teaching Religious Education to numerous
grades thus many of our students. Colleen has been irreplaceable in the sporting
arena, working as a trainer, a coach, a supervisor or even as the umpire! Colleen and the family have
moved to country Victoria and as such we will miss her amazing input but wish her and the family
happiness and continued success in their new home.
PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
We welcome five pre-service teachers to our teaching team:
Ben Lannen in Prep A
Kate Spillane in Prep E
Lauren Fletcher in 6C
Susara Crowe in 1/2D and
Alena Schneider in 5B
I’m confident these students will benefit from the exceptional talent and professionalism of our staff.
We welcome two new staff members:
Catherine Slattery and Cheryl Freeman have commenced this week as members of our Education
Support Staff; I’m sure they will add to the strength of this already highly effective team.
SCHOOL SELF EVALUATION
As you should be aware HEPS is undergoing a School Review as we have completed the four years under
the current School Strategic Plan and now need to reflect on its success and identify a direction for the
next four years. Staff are currently analyzing school data and other information to support this
evaluation. We will welcome student input into the self evaluation as well as provide you, the parents
with opportunities to provide feedback about how we have performed over the past four years and suggest
recommendations about how we may improve in the areas of:
Student Learning
Student Engagement and Wellbeing, and
Student Pathways and Transitions
Please stay tuned for opportunities to have your input.
Kind regards,
Kitty Allard.
Principal.
PARENTS of primary and secondary students, in all states, territories and countries, are warmly invited to take part in this year’s online conference, to be held next month by Parents Victoria, in Australia. The conference will be held non-stop on the internet from 6am Sunday 20 May to midnight Saturday 26 May. No special software is needed, other than an internet-connected computer and a browser (speakers are an advantage but are optional). The online discussions will be very easy to join in, online resources will be provided, and guidelines about how to participate will be available. *You don’t need to be a member of Parents Victoria to take part. Join in for all days, just some days, or even a few hours, depending on your lifestyle and other commitments.
Topics The exact day-to-day conference program will be emailed to those who register shortly before the conference begins. Topics include Celebrating Public Education, Bullying, Multiculturalism, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Mental Health, Travel to School and School Payments. Register online at no cost The Parents Victoria Online Conference 2012 website will open at exactly 6am on Sunday 20 May at: http://www.cybertext.net.au/pv/ *Please note: The ‘placeholder page’ that is currently visible at this website address will automatically redirect to the live conference homepage, at precisely 6am on Sunday 20 May. Please register yourself online, at this website address, before you participate in the online conference. The conference will feature six ‘live’ daily online discussions, each of them hosted, for several hours each day, by a member of Parents Victoria or expert commentators from a number of different associations. Each 24-hour period will focus on a different topic that is currently of concern to parents. The seventh day will provide an extra opportunity to have your say on all of the topics discussed earlier in the week. There will also be one continuous online discussion that will last all week. I look forward to meeting all of you online soon, to discuss these important issues. The more of you join in, the more successful this e-vent will be. Best wishes, Debra Crouch Online Conference Manager Email: [email protected]
SPORTS UPDATE: Welcome back to term 2. I
hope all our HEPS
families enjoyed their
Easter break, as did I.
There is lots happening in
sport at HEPS this term:
Winter sport for the 5/6s started last Friday
against Antonio Park PS, House and District
Cross Country and Hooptime (basketball
competition - either Term 2 or 3 depending on
dates) and of course our new “Heps Harriers”
running club for grades 3-6 students
commenced on Monday, April 23rd
at HE Parker
Reserve.
Winter Sport started last Friday, 20th
April
from 1.00-3.00pm against Antonio Park PS.
Wins were achieved in Volleyball, Netball
(mixed), Softball (Boys) and Soccer last week.
Well done. If you have not paid your fees
already in term 1 of $60.00, please forward that
payment asap to the office. Fixtures are up on the
noticeboard in the BER building if you’d like to
check where your child’s team plays each week.
(Sometimes subject to change at short notice)
We do not play on Friday 27th
April, Friday
25th
May, Friday 1st June (5/6 camp) or Friday
29th
June (last day Term 2). All grade 5/6
students will be having an earlier lunch time
(12.30pm) due to Winter Sport, therefore it is
very important that all 5/6 lunch orders are
taken directly to the canteen prior to Friday
morning assembly each week in Term 2.
Hopefully a catch-up day will be held on
Thursday, 28th
June against Wonga Park PS.
If any parents are keen to coach, umpire or score
on any or every Friday this term, please let me
know. The Winter sports are: Volleyball,
Netball (Girls and Mixed), Softball (Girls and
Boys), Soccer, Football and Bat Tennis. If you
have a sports shirt, please wash it and return it to
me (unless you have been asked to hold on to it
for this term). Uniforms, including new netball
dresses and new sports tops (limited) were
handed out on Thursday this week. Please
endeavour to look after your shirt (uniform)
during this term. Footy jumpers often require
some sard wonder soap scrubbing to remove any
marks. Much appreciated!
Congratulations to our HEPS cricket team for
winning the Ringwood District pennant for
Summer Sport in term 1. We won on percentage
against Yarra Rd PS. They will progress to play
Marlborough PS in Kanga 8s and hopefully
Great Ryrie PS in real cricket in Term 4.
Thankyou to Mr Garvey for his coaching too.
Also congratulations to Dan Scholz (yr 6) who
was selected at both District and Zone trials for
his cricket skills. Unfortunately, he did not
progress to Regional level. Well done Dan.
House Cross Country will be held at HE
Parker Reserve on Friday, 25th
May (weather
pending). I will be looking for many helpers and
a separate notice will be sent home soon. Preps
and new students will find out what houses they
are in over the next 3 weeks. The top 10 runners
(grades 3-6) will be awarded ribbons and will
have the opportunity to progress to District level
on Tuesday, May 29th
at Domeney Reserve in
Park Orchards. Sadly the grade 5/6s will be
unable to compete at District Cross Country this
year, due to a timetable clash. However, grade
3/4 top 10 runners will compete. Parents of these
students will be requested to transport their
child/ren to this event commencing at 2.00pm.
Over the next month I will be walking the
students down to HE Parker to practise the
House Cross Country course. Preps, ones and
twos will also be practising the Cross Country
course at HE Parker and I know Mrs Hassan
would appreciate some assistance with this on
Mondays and Tuesdays over the next couple of
weeks (especially preps on Tuesdays and last
session on Mondays). Please speak to EJ or
myself if you are able to assist us. Prep-2 will
also be competing in the House Cross Country
also on Friday, May 25th
.
HEPS Harriers Running club commenced on
Monday, April 23rd
at 8.00 – 8.40am at HE
Parker Reserve, beside the netball courts.
Thirteen grades 3-6 students attended for our
first session and seemed to enjoy the experience.
Don’t forget to always bring a drink bottle, wear
appropriate running gear and footwear (no
Dunlop volleys!), deodorant and bring a hand
towel. Please complete the slip below (if you
haven’t already) and return to me by Friday, 27th
April, if you are planning to attend next week.
Parent helpers are encouraged and those who
enjoy running (is there such a thing?!) can join in
and assist me with the program hopefully. HEPS
Harriers for grades prep-2 will commence next
Monday at lunchtime and will be regularly held
on Mondays and Thursdays at lunchtime (1.40-
2.00pm).
Looking forward to a successful term in
health and fitness despite the cooler weather!
Rosie Lumsden PE/Sport Coordinator.
